8. Toronto Maple Leafs
Don't cheer for the Leafs, kids -- it's bad for your grammar. Last time we checked, the plural of "leaf" was "leaves." But like Tie Domi always said, "We ain't real big on book learnin'. "
|
| long post ahead Posted: 9/13/2007 10:35:04 AM | | If they were named after the plant, you'd be correct. But they weren't. They were named after the company. | |
|
| long post ahead Posted: 9/14/2007 3:56:36 AM | Not named after the plant. (although it did figure into the eventual name) Named Maple Leafs in 1927 by Conn Symthe, Smythe once scouted a team called the "East Toronto Maple Leafs", although it was a grammatical error Smythe liked the name. Smythe would also take over as coach and GM, while changing the team's name to Maple Leafs in February. In addition Smythe who was World War I veteran was very patriotic and liked its link to Canada's national symbol. http://www.sportsecyclopedia.com/nhl/tml/leafs.html
A veteran of WWI and an outspoken patriot, Smythe chose the maple leaf symbol in the hope of giving his team broader appeal http://thecanadianencyclopedia.com/index.cfm?PgNm=TCE&Params=A1ARTA0008057
where it also mentions Members of the team have won few individual awards: the last Maple Leaf to win the scoring title was Gord Drillon in 1938, and only 2 Leafs have won the HART TROPHY - Babe Pratt (1944) and Ted KENNEDY (1955). The team deteriorated after its unexpected triumph in 1967 and remains the only one of the Original Six - the six founding teams of the NATIONAL HOCKEY LEAGUE - to have failed to reach the Stanley Cup finals in the 40 years since then

|
| long post ahead Posted: 9/14/2007 7:29:24 AM | Oh, the Leafs are inept, all right. Every year I get to hear how great they are going to be. And every year I get to watch them go straight in the crapper. And I have to be force fed this junk on CBC every week. I don't know why they don't show some real teams on there. All the other Canadian teams were in the hunt last year, and they keep showing the Leafs. Ugh!
They stink, and they always have. The only reason they ever had a 100 point season is because the league started handing out points for losing in OT. Great job, guys!
I see Mr. Maurice is guaranteeing that they will be vying for the cup this year. Pretty big words for a coach who's star player is a 36 year old injury-prone European. Should be fun to watch!

good stuff. i had no idea a professional sports team could be so inept. Hey. At least we're consistent. Ha Ha Ha. It's much like mother nature. In autumn the Leafs start to fall. It's almost a natural law with us. Only leaf fans truly appreciate the long litany and legacy of cheering for a bunch of loozers and lamers. At least when I die, I can say I saw the leafs win a CUP. Mind you I was 8 at the time.
here. We'll share some confidential info on how lame our team has been for some 40 years and counting...this was posted on here about a month or so ago: ----------------------------- Yep. They have the most expensive starting 4 defencemen in the league and finished 25th in Goals Against in a 30 team league, and as mentioned, last in 3rd period goals against...Hal Gill +11; Kubina +7; McCabe +3;Kaberle +3
Only six other teams -- five of them relatively new to the NHL -- have not appeared in a Cup final since 1967. It may be the only thing the Leafs have in common with the San Jose Sharks, Atlanta Thrashers, Nashville Predators, Minnesota Wild, Columbus Blue Jackets and the Phoenix Coyotes
Of the past 39 Cup titleists (one season was lost to a lockout), only one Cup winner finished below seventh overall in the NHL standings. Thirty of the 38 other champions -- or 79% of winners -- finished in the top four in the league. Over the past 39 seasons, the Leafs have finished in the top four all of once.
Over that same post-Original Six era, 35 of 39 Cup winners finished in the top six in the league. Since the NHL expanded to 21 teams and beyond, the Leafs have been a top-six team just four times, three of them coming in the recent Pat Quinn years.
Paul Maurice has missed the playoffs in 6 of his nine seasons coaching. Ferguson Jr. is 0 for 2 in making the playoffs as a GM and Andrew Raycroft has never won a playoff series in his 6 years as a pro.
There's more there if you care to read it... http://slam.canoe.ca/Slam/Hockey/NHL/Toronto/2007/06/12/4254358-sun.html
Where have you gone Joe Di Maggio...Jesus loves you more than you would know...hey hey hey. Bring back Bob Baun, Carl Brewer, Tim Horton and Bill Barilko. Gawd bless the dead Leafs. They would perform better than the defence we have now, even if Barilko was a forward. One thing about cheering for the Leafs: One of these years we're bound to be right. Camps opened yesterday, and yep, there's lea"v"es in my backyard on the ground swirling around mindlessly.

Sure the leafs have a dismal record since their cup days. Interesting to note though, the building is always sold out. Air Canada centre is the hardest rink to get tickets at.
TO prolly has the most loyal fans in Canada and is the most popular team in Canada.
Go to a leafs vs nucks game in Vancouver, or any candian city for that matter and you'll find half the building is leafs fans. go figure.
The leafs also are #1 in the entire leaugue in revenue as well.
As long as the fans keep coming out and accepting an average team, nothing will change.
Leafs Nation...soo many love them even when they lose.

| Hockey Anyone? Posted: 9/17/2007 11:13:30 AM | Anson Carter is skating with the Oilers. Lowe invited him to camp, hoping to improve their offence. Carter had some of his better days with the Canucks and Oilers, so after bombing and playing poorly in the eastern conference he should be a welcome addition to the right wing where the Oilers lack depth. | |
|
| Hockey Anyone? Posted: 9/17/2007 12:26:52 PM | | I can't see Carter winning a spot on the team, especially with how Sam Gagner has looked in camp. | |
|
| Hockey Anyone? Posted: 9/17/2007 12:30:40 PM | "LMAO...look at all these bitter people towards the leafs. Funny stuff" Bitter? We are bitter? Yeah, ok, because there's nothing quite as gratifying as cheering on a loser year after year. Damn...I SO wish any of the teams I cheer for could suck as badly as the Leafs. Yeah you're right. We're bitter
And thanks goaliebns for the history lesson. I always thought they were named after the company. learn something new every day!

| Hockey Anyone? Posted: 9/17/2007 12:36:36 PM | | i see some similarities with my pittsburgh pirates 15 straight years of losing. and the fans just keep comming out for more. as long as they get to see fireworks every weekend they're happy. and don't forget the bobbleheads. | |

| Hockey Anyone? Posted: 9/18/2007 8:41:38 PM | whats funny about the flyers winning? they got one of the fastest and talented teams on the ice. they are gonna surprise everyone...the only teams who are gonna challenge them are the rangers and sens of course. but people dont understand how deep this flyers team is...you guys seem them as a 15th place team...just wait
p.s....i hate the flyers....but damn, i bow down to their GM

| Hockey Anyone? Posted: 9/18/2007 11:48:47 PM | | 76,000 tickets sold in 40 minutes. to watch hockeys number 1 attraction play on new years day. unbelievable. | |
|
| Hockey Anyone? Posted: 9/19/2007 12:47:32 AM | You bow down to their GM? Why? Because you are a leafs fan? Jesus! The Flyers are terrible! They've been a joke since the Lindros trade, and I don't think I have to fill you in on how they've done since.
They do have some nice young players right now. But I am sure the organization will find a way to mess it up. When all else fails, judge a club by it's past history. Everybody arrives happy, but leaves hating the place.
Bobby Clarke......There is another area of discussion. National treasure, my ass! More like nothing more than a hired goon. We, as a people are supposed to be proud of this guy? He broke someone else's ankle! Imagine if some Russian did that to Gretzky or Mario. What would we be saying about that right now?
|
| Hockey Anyone? Posted: 9/19/2007 7:05:19 AM | ^^^^ ok....lol ummm ya.
well it looks like im gonna have to defend myself.
First off...bobby clarke isnt the GM lol. It's Paul Homlgrem...and i dont know what me being a Leafs fan has to do with bowing down to a GM like bobby clarke...so ya.
this lineup they have may not be scariest...but..them all gelled together..they can turn some heads
Briere, jeff carter, eager, gagne, kapanen, hartnell, knuble, Lupul, mike richards, umberger, and upshall
with gauthier, hatcher, picard, timonen, rathje and Jason smith on D....they are gonna be good
And if i were to judge on a teams history....history tells me that Philadelphia will have another successful season. this team has always been a contender with the exception of last year. soo re think your answer
|
| Hockey Anyone? Posted: 9/19/2007 7:32:11 AM | ^^^^^ Very impressive line-up chiefs. Seems to be missing something though. hmmmm. let's see....goaltending perhaps? Like I said, I think they could make the playoffs with Ty Conklin in net, considering all the talent they have this season, but you can't win a conference without great goatending, unless you're loaded to the nads like the Oilers of the 80s - ie. the Pittsburgh Penguins. The Flyers won't even win their division, never mind the conference. I say they finish third in their division, behind the Rangers and Penguins - and sixth in the conference, behind Buffalo, Ottawa and Atlanta.
Still, from 15th overall to 6th overall is a phenomenal jump in one year.

|

I will agree with one-third of that comment. You're right. He's no different than Huet. Neither of them have done anything. How can you compare him to Emery or Rollie though? Those two have backstopped their teams to Stanley Cup finals appearances. No different than them? Think about it. Duh
