| Hockey anyone? Posted: 10/8/2007 1:36:30 AM | Hrrmmm... Maybe Lowe was a little ticked when Pronger left the Oil (for unknown reasons, wink, wink)
The guy builds a great future for the team, after so many NOT SO GREAT years, aquires someone like PRONGER (in my dictionary, that"PRONGER" word references "back stabbing, two timing, CHEATER!")
ahem
Only for Pronger to go to the Ducks, and win the cup THE VERY NEXT YEAR?
As IF anyone is surprised Lowe stabbed back! Surrrrre, Burke merely signed Pronger, but I'm pretty darn sure Pronger and Burke discussed things BEFORE Pronger dumped the news on Lowe. (Think about that for a moment)
Quite honestly? I think Burke is getting a taste of his own medicine. It seems the old boy can play the sneaky game, but can't play by his own rules. Lowe has abided by the rules, so the sneaky, cheaters are getting antsy. Bold moves (such as Lowe) are a good way to bring the sneakiness behind the business to the surface...
Cheaters never prosper.
AND NEVER... under ANY circumstances.......... FARK with the OILERS! ..... lesson learned.

Who exactly did the cheating here, your speaking of? Burke did nothing wrong by signing Pronger.
|
| Hockey anyone? Posted: 10/8/2007 10:33:16 AM | """Surrrrre, Burke merely signed Pronger,""" Huh? On July 3, Pronger was traded to the Anaheim Ducks for forward Joffrey Lupul, defensive prospect Ladislav Smid, Anaheim's 2007 first-round draft pick, a conditional first-round draft pick (dependant on the Ducks reaching the Stanley Cup Finals in the next 3 years), and Anaheim's 2008 second-round draft pick. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chris_Pronger
Sounds like it was a trade to me.
|
| Hockey anyone? Posted: 10/8/2007 11:04:47 AM | "^^^i dont blame Pronger and his wife for leaving Edmonton. I'd do the same thing." A year into a five-year deal, you'd do the same thing? Then you're as much of a ( fill in the blank here) as Pronger. There should be a recourse for players who do that. I know one thing...If you're contracted to build a house and you back out partway through building that house, simply because your wife doesn't like you building that house, your ass would be sued for breach of contract so quickly it would make your head spin. How is this any different? | |
|
| Hockey anyone? Posted: 10/8/2007 11:33:06 AM | Sly.... You apparently didn't comprehend what I was saying... Think about it... I'm fairly certain that Mr. Burke was chatting up Mr. Pronger for some time before anything was said to Lowe. Did Lowe get upset that Burke didn't phone HIM and give him the head's up?? No, he simply did what he had no other choice to do!
Don't tell me Burke wasn't standing by waiting, rubbing his hands together excited about the prospect of obtaining PRONGER!! I'm thinking Burke wasn't too concerned about his friendship with Lowe at that point.
Pucks... Who the F cares about beaches or SNOW?? Funny how the game of hockey is played on ICE!! Hummm, seems back in the day, when hockey was played OUTSIDE, the hockey wives/bunnies/groupies didn't mind the cold... Now suddenly hockey is all about the weather??

Why should there be a recourse?
If Pronger bailed on his contract then he could be sued for "breech" of contract. That is not what happened here. He told Oilers management he wanted out....Lowe traded him to Anaheim, got Lupul and draft picks in return.
Fozy Zoo, It is not just about weather. Tell me what is more attractive about Edmonton over southern California? These players are making millions. Why shouldnt they get to choose where they reside.

| Hockey anyone? Posted: 10/8/2007 1:30:57 PM | Puck... It's FINE to want to live somewhere else... But breaking a contract and letting down an entire team and their fans, then justify it by saying "I wanna live somewhere else"..... ?? Then crying to the media that he's tired of the rumors.... well, what did he expect? Not only did he crush the team and the fans, but he furthers the upset by bashing the City of Edmonton!
AND! The guy is from ONTARIO!.......... so in reality, his actions bashed his home country.
Wrong. Very wrong on all sorts of levels.
He can have his beaches, his hot weather and his bikini groupies..... We loyal, dedicated, PROUD Edmontonians (and Canadians) will simply continue to try and reinstate our reputation as being an AWESOME city to live in.

Many better places to play than Edmonton. Edmontonians are just crying like babies. Pronger is indeed Canadian. So what? Gretzky is Canadian too. Where do you think he lives? Yup in the USA. So do many other Canadians just like the Great One. Like i said business is business.

What a blow for Blake and the Leafs. Cancer and Leukemia is nasty and i cant see Blake playing long now.
|
| Hockey anyone? Posted: 10/8/2007 2:18:41 PM | From one of the sports blogs i usually check into:
"""May I add some information... If you've Wikipedia'ed the disease, it points to a study that shows a median survival age of 98 months for an asymptomatic group, where Blake's most likely to fit in (after all, he just played 3 NHL games last week), with the longest surviving at less than 10 years. However, at least right now, the article omits that this study was done before imatinib mesylate was approved by FDA for clinical use in 2001. Also known as Gleevec, it has really improved the survival rate of chronic myelogenous leukemia. Best wishes for him and his family."""
Ditto on the best wishes.

Its is the sulking Oilers fans who are crying up a storm coz Pronger didnt want to stay in Edmonton that i was defending with my comment "Burke did nothing wrong by signing Pronger".
|
| Hockey anyone? Posted: 10/9/2007 8:01:52 AM | Ok Pucks... Who is sulking and crying? That would be BURKE now!! (which was the initial topic at hand). Though I brought up Pronger, it was part of the topic being discussed... YOU are the one who directed the conversation to Pronger.
...Wish Luongo would pull up his pants and walk away from the Nucks....
"Human Services Support Worker" eh?? ..... hrmmmm.....

What does me being a human services support worker have to do with the discussion at hand? That's like me saying your a dayhome worker..Wow... You can always tell when someone has nothing constructive to add to the debate at hand because they get cut tail, and turn personal just like you just did.
Back to Pronger. I love the guy. He along with at least a dozen other Canadians on the team (Getzalf, Neiderymeurs, McDonald too name a few) did Canada proud when their Ducks won the Cup. Kudos to Burke....He is an awesome GM.

|
| Hockey anyone? Posted: 10/9/2007 9:44:31 AM | I never said Burke WASN'T an awesome GM..... just made mention of the fact that he's a cry baby, and that he'd have (and has likely) done the same as Lowe.
As for "personal attacks"....... Perhaps you should lighten up.... I was ONLY TEASING (hence the little run away icon)

OE: ..... your thumbs down to my profession CANNOT be taken lightly, as that WAS a direct hit.... So what was it that you said about people who attack personally?

| Hockey anyone? Posted: 10/9/2007 10:13:20 AM | The topic at hand was BURKE... I remained on topic, explaining the similarity of what Lowe did with Penner, to what Burke did with Pronger...
YOU... Went awry. So please don't tell ME to stay on topic when you are the one that swayed the issue in another direction by focussing on Pronger.
OT......... GO OILERS GO!! lol

| Hockey anyone? Posted: 10/9/2007 10:30:09 AM | Actually, the thread is "hockey anyone"........Hockey is a pretty broad topic. Pronger is related to Burke, as Burke dealt for him. Your were discussing how you felt Burke had been in discussions with Pronger in advance if i recall.
It is all relevant to do with the Lowe issue as well imo.
what i meant by STAY on TOPIC is dont bring my profession into a hockey thread.
Peace back at you. | |

| Hockey anyone? Posted: 10/9/2007 11:16:53 AM | you all missed the point on why burke is so mad. its not taking penner at all. its how much he paid him. think about it now all the rookies that are ufa's are thinking what kind of offer sheet they can get. if a guy like penner got 4mill a season then getz would be worth 7 according to if you based it on skill. the fact is lowe may have messed up by driving the salary's of the players that are needed to be alittle lighter.
think about it now you have to sign your star players, and get all ufa's singed before a big offer sheet comes in. thats a big scr ew job on all 29 other teams in the nhl.
the only issue was the amount offered. come on look at the contract vs other players at that amount. this deal could drive players prices up once again, although in a cap world of course not all can get high end deals but cuts the throat of teams that can draft well.
go flames go in sutter we trust

i thought the move by Lowe made no sense.
Lowe was desperate. He coudnt land Nylander or Vanek and he needed to pick somone up after losing Smyth, Lupul and their captin.
4 Million for a rookie....all i can do is .... At least the Penner's are laughing all the way to the bank.

| Hockey anyone? Posted: 10/9/2007 2:09:40 PM | "If Pronger bailed on his contract then he could be sued for "breech" of contract (BTW, thank you for catching the typo). That is not what happened here. He told Oilers management he wanted out....Lowe traded him to Anaheim, got Lupul and draft picks in return"
Pronger demanded a trade. What choice did Lowe have? There IS NO RECOURSE. Lowe could have benched him for the remaining four years, but then who is left to get the job done? By DEMANDING a trade, Pronger is, essentially, walking out on a contract. Lowe had no choice but to trade him, or let him sit and (for sake of the analogy) let the house remain unbuilt for four more years.
You're right...hockey is a business...but name me another business where I guy can bail on a 5-year, multi-million dollar contract, get everything he wants, and not have to pay any penalties?
But whatever. It matters none now. The Oil have had such an experience before (Mark Messier, Paul Coffey) and I'm sure they will run into it again in the future. That's probably what gets me steamed...is that we have seen players reneg on their contracts before. What if Lowe said to, say, Roloson..."you know that contract you signed? well you really sucked last year, so we're not going to honour that contract this year." How far do you think THAT would fly? About as far as a lead zeppelin, I'd think.
That's exactly what Pronger did. He renegged on the terms of his contract.
