According to Burke himself, the price is not the issue. Burke has stated time and time again that what pi$$ed him off about the whole thing is that Lowe did not call him in advance and tell him about the offer sheet.

| Hockey anyone? Posted: 10/9/2007 2:20:04 PM | ^^^ you make valid points, but how many players have done what Pronger did? Several.
Pronger was not the first guy to demand a trade in hockey or pro sports for that matter, and he certainly wont be the last.
The Oilers got a trade in return, or , they could have kept an unhappy player who did not perform. I think Lowe did what he could do, considering the circumstances.
I am not sure why it surprises you that players choose to bail on their contracts.
|
| Hockey anyone? Posted: 10/9/2007 2:48:03 PM | lowe had another choice he could have sent pronger down to the ahl. im sure if its off season you can make moves with no waiver. and im sure proger would have not gone to whatever city the oiler would send him for another 4 years to get his money.
and how does lowe not calling him throw a grenade in 29 other teams. put 2 and 2 togheter. i have heard otherwise that it was the money.

I'm not saying the money SHOULDN'T be the issue, of course it should. It was a ridiculous sum to pay for an unproven commodity. All I'm saying is that Burke himself claims the money is not what he is upset about.
Yes, all his whining about throwing the grenade and the desperate GM fighting for his job insinuates that it is totally a money issue, but then he turns around, very next sentence and claims the money isn't the issue, that the issue is that Lowe "didn't have the guts to at least call me in advance" which, as I've pointed out already, makes absolutely no business sense on Lowe's part to do it. In fact, if Lowe was really out just to screw Burke, the chances are better that he WOULD have called him in advance, just so Burke would have signed Penner for $2M thinking he had screwed Lowe. Bottom line is, there was absolutely no reason for Lowe to call Burke in advance. No way Burke was ever going to match that offer so why would he need an extra 48 hours to think about it? All Burke wanted was some extra time to convince Penner that $2M was a great deal...basically he wanted a chance to low-ball his own player. Burke is also doing a little sabre-swinging, trying to put the fear of Brian into other GMs around the league, so that they don't do the same thing to him as Lowe did. We all know that Getzlaf and Perry will be in the same situation next summer as Penner was this summer. Ands how easy do you think it'll be for him to sign them to a contract extension prior to July 1, 2008, in light of the jackpot their linemate struck this summer? Not very.
As for Puck's comments about Pronger not being the first professional athlete to walk out on a contract, I realize that fully. I gave you two examples of Oilers who did the very same thing - Messier and Coffey. But just because others have done it in the past doesn't make it any less of a breech of contract.
And no, Lowe could not have sent Pronger to the minors in the off-season. There ARE no minors in the off-season. Nothing happens until NHL training camps start. Even then, the only way someone with Pronger's experience can go to the minors without clearing waivers is on a conditioning stint, and only AFTER spending time on the DL. And even if he somehow could pull of a Lamorello and figure out a way to get Pronger on the DL, then down to the AHL for a few games, it's still $6M against the Oilers' salary cap. Lowe had no recourse.

| Hockey anyone? Posted: 10/9/2007 9:33:29 PM | I have no idea why Maurice didn't pull Toskala after the third goal tonight when toskala did his frozen statue routine on a deflection. I doubt it would have mattered in the final score. He and the leafs definitely didn't have it tonite, but you shouldn't leave a guy in there for 7 goals.
last time i seen a coach be that stupid was the last nite Patrick Roy played for the habs.

| Hockey anyone? Posted: 10/11/2007 3:31:49 AM | ^^^^^^^^ they'll need a lot better goaltending than they got Wednesday night. 8-2 loss... Not exactly the outcome one would expect from a contender. Fron the Canucks? Yes. But from a contender? not so much. | |
|
| Hockey anyone? Posted: 10/11/2007 3:44:35 AM | put some thought into your posts. saying nucks are going to win 5 times doesnt make you seem smart and it doesnt make it 5 times more likley to happen.
god i hate october, slow start again. flames need to work on there pk and clearing the zone. looking good in alot of areas though.

| Hockey anyone? Posted: 10/11/2007 7:06:42 AM | smackemhard: I was really looking forward to the game last night. I thought for sure Calgary would come out with guns blazing considering their slow start. They did not disappoint. It was a very good game last night, although I would have preferred to win without getting a goal handed to us by the refs. I don't see a single hole in your defense. Yes, there were some mistakes and some missed assignments, but Calgary has the potential to be scary good this year. Seems to me Iginla needs to step it up a little, though. Huselius is freakin' incredible. I'm looking forward to great things from him this year. Good luck! GO WINGS! | |

| Hockey anyone? Posted: 10/11/2007 9:57:47 AM | Im picking the Flames to finish first in their division, even with their slow start.
The only Canadian team off to a good start is the 4-0 Sens. Emery has his work cut out for him with Gerber playing so well.
Canucks and Leafs have had blowout game losses and look shaky on the back end.
Oilers young crew looks good and the future will be bright. But i dont think the Oil are going to make the playoffs. No where near the depth of the Flames, Ducks, SJ and Detroit.

They dont have the offensive depth like the other West powerhouses. If Gaborik and Rolston go down, the Wild are screwed no matter how good their D is.
|
| Hockey anyone? Posted: 10/11/2007 11:09:56 AM | | Sens are 5 and 0 by the way. Soon to be 5 and 1 after Carolina goes in tonite and shuts down gerber. | |

| Hockey anyone? Posted: 10/11/2007 11:21:34 AM | joker you also were worried about phanuef with no hamerlik and dion has looked the best of all the defencemen. all the pairings seem to be playing good. seems to me in about 5 more games the flames should be firing on all cylinders. takes some time to get used to a new coach.
im liking alot of what i am seeing dont get me wrong people. i just see some areas that need some inprovment.

and iggy will get things going he is just a slow starter. nice to have guys other then him that can get it done.

| Hockey anyone? Posted: 10/11/2007 11:31:41 AM | they need to crack keenan's cherry pretty soon, or methinks we might see the old iron Mike snarling away pretty soon.
"... but we -- myself, Langks (Daymond Langkow) and (Alex) Tanguay -- matched up against them, and we weren't nearly good enough against them," said a sombre Jarome Iginla, who admitted he will have to be better if the Flames want to snap their early three-game winless slump. "We play against good lines every night, and that's part of our job to have them thinking about us. We weren't a threat. We didn't create anything, so they'd just pick it up and go. "They were way better than us tonight as a line, and it's not acceptable." It's not exactly the way they wanted to start a four-game road trip, with tough dates in Dallas, Nashville and Denver still to come..." http://slam.canoe.ca/Slam/Hockey/NHL/Calgary/2007/10/11/4567689-sun.html
That iginla has to be the slowest starter in the NHL. Every year it seems to take that guy till almost Christmas to get his motor going.
Anyone see the hit on kesler in the Flyers game last nite...A crushing cross check to the head...suspensions for sure coming.

| Hockey anyone? Posted: 10/11/2007 6:15:58 PM | "If Gaborik and Rolston go down, the Wild are screwed no matter how good their D is."
If Iginla and Kiprosov go down, Calgary is screwed. If the Sedins go down, Vancouver is screwed. If Briere and Gagne go down, Philly is screwed. If Dadsyuk and Zetterberg go down, Detroit is screwed. If Crosby and Malkin go down, Pittsburgh is screwed. If 2 of the Spezza/Alfie/Heatley line go down, Ottawa is screwed. If ....
See a pattern there?
It's pretty easy to say that about ANY team...take two of their top stars, put them on the shelf for any extended period of time and the team is in big trouble. Funny you should mention Gaborik though....he missed 48 games last year and the Wild finished with 104 points. Also, with their goatending, all they have to do is score 2 goals a gaime and they are going to win more than they lose. Yes, I realize that Backstrom's numbers are artificially low because of Lemaire's system, but you add a good goalie and a trap to a first line like theirs and that equals success...at least in the regular season.

I dont see it that way. The good teams prevail even if a couple good players get injured. That is what distinguishes these pro teams. The Wild may have finished with 104 points but how many teams broke the century mark or close to it? Canucks, Nashville, Detroit, San Jose, Anaheim...and others. These teams all faced injuries. Wild have NO playoff success.
BTW.. Calgary,,,has Conroy, Tanguay, Langkow, Huselius so there not screwed if iggy does not score. Philly,,,, has Richards, Knuble, Lupul, Harntell, J. Carter and Kapanen. So there not screwed if Briere does not score. Pittsburg,,,has Reechi, Sykora, Roberts, C.Armstrong, Christensen and R. Whitney so there not screwed in Crosby or Malkin slump. I could go on. The difference between the Wild and many other teams is scoring depth. I give the wild full marks for defense though. They need some more offense. 1-0 games only get you so far as evident in the playoffs where they have had ZERO success.
