| Historic irony for the Flames Posted: 10/18/2007 12:08:23 PM | ^^^^ "Raycroft's 44th in the league in goals against and Toskola's 57th"?
Source please?
When i looked at the stats on NHL.com....it states as of today Raycroft is 22nd and Toskola is at 30th...Big difference than what you have stated. Lets have a gander at how some of the best goalies (goals against average) are doing year to date; 18th...Roloson 2.87 19th...Hasek 2.94 20th...Miller 3.04 21st....Luongo 3.17 22nd...Raycroft 3.19 23rd.. Kipper 3.40 25th...Brodeur 3.40
Some pretty big names having POOR starts.

ps. And while we're on the subject of the leafs, I'm glad you brought up Antropovs name. So for how many years now have we been trying to put a productive line together for Sundin? And now that it sppears we may have one, what does Maurice start doing? Yep. He starts juggling the lines up. Hey that's fine. That's a coaches perogative, but it would seem to make sense to maybe do a little tinkering with the rest of the wetback Kyle Wellwoods we got floating, than to tinker with something that's apparently working. dontcha think?
Next time you see maurice on an interview...i.e. tonite maybe...check out the bags under this kids eyes. He's not long for this job. Bring Quinn back and turf Maurice and fergy and save some salary. Quinn couldn't honestly coach this team worse than Maurice even if he tried to. Stupid penalties, slovenly backchecking, one line going out of three or four, no defense and no system on the horizon.
Pucks' i'm glad you're patient, but I've been cheering for these guys for over 40 years. Maurice needs a slap upside the head when he says leaf fans shouldn't be booing hairballs like McCabe.

I totally agree about Marice and Fergie...havent i said that they have been terrible? I liked Quinn as well and have said there D defintely needs improvement. I agree slap Marice better yet can him. He has made silly moves that make no sense often.
The stats you posted from tsn include all goalies. Many who have played just 1 game. There are several on that list that i have never heard of like Weiman, Patzold, Ellis, Stephan, Anderson and Hilller. The stats i viewed from nhl.com were goalies who have played more minutes which is why raycroft and toskola were ranked better And Antropov has been a bust so far. Only this year has he shown us any hope with all that promise he was made out to have when he first signed. Hopefully he continues what he has been doing so far this year. I dont pretend to know all the problems that the should be addressed by the Leafs but they defintely have coaching/management/and high paying players not performing issues.

| Hockey anyone? Posted: 10/18/2007 7:05:41 PM | """...Many who have played just 1 game""" Many actually haven't even played a full period yet. Antropov's goal is being reviewed with 27 seconds left; 3-2 leafs coming back apparently from down 0-2. Yep it counts. His 6th. glad i was wrong on the score.
Listening to Jim Ralph tonight apparently Toskala won the game for them tonight. Toskala, by the way has never had a GAA higher than 2.56 in his 4 years prior to this season.
So they're back to 500. Thrashers broke their cherry tonight as well at the expense of the struggling Strangers. I'm out........
ps. As for kipper being way down in the standings, apparently his numbers right now are almost exactly what they've been the last two seasons. I'll see if I can find a link to the story, but i think it was today on TSN. ciao

thats 7 games in a row with a player scoring 2x in each game.
now though im confussed again on the flames identy. we cough up a 4 goal lead basicaly beattign ourselfs. but yet we can come back with no prpblems.

| Hockey anyone? Posted: 10/20/2007 6:54:16 PM | Well that was special. Hawks get into toronto at 3 in the morning last night, start their backup goaltender, and trail 3-1 after two periods. Final :Chihawks 6 Leafs 4
I mean heck, the fans were even chanitng Go leafs Go, so I'm not sure what Maurice will say tonite since it couldn't have been the fans that made the difference tonite. Too funny. It was because the Leaf fans started cherring for the leafs that they came back on the panthers the other night. Lord help us.
Pony boy should get a nice three game scratch after tonites effort. i'm not sure if he had a shift where he didn't take a lazy penalty.
Meanwhile Sens push it out to an 8 and 1 start to their season.
I wonder if this Hornsby guy gets his article ideas from PoF forums:
"Backups are Leafs' No. 1 foe - Chicago may be fifth team to rest starter" http://slam.canoe.ca/Slam/Hockey/NHL/Toronto/2007/10/20/4591727-sun.html

Are you going to bash the leafs after every loss? You bring up Ottawa but how about the other Canadian teams: TO - 3-4-2 Vancouver - 3-4 Edmonton - 3-4 (as i type there losing to the flames so it could be 3-5)

You bring up Ottawa but how about the other Canadian teams: Relax Pucks...Your constant sticking up for a mediocre team that hasn't been to the playoffs since Lalime was in town last in '04, that needs change is growing old. You like going rah rah rah for a team of overpaid underachievers, fill yer boots lad. It's not about the Oilers or the Canucks or the Flames. Really couldn't give two hoots what they're up to cuzz they're not in our division.
You're the one that for some reason keeps bringing them into the conversation about the leafs. What the heck does the flames Oilers or canucks have to do with the leafs standings? i can just imagine arguing with Sens fans and they bring up the LA Kings or Canucks record or something frigging obscure like that. Why do you keep bringing the western clubs into it?
Blushirt babe, I feel for ya. i figured that team would have gotten off to a way better start. Ranger fans aren't quite as cutesy-wutesy and kindhearted or simpleninded about chronic losses. Mr. Renney might start hearing footsteps if your Strangers don't pull up their socks soon.

I agree..... Renney seems great as a coach for the lunchbucket type of team they had the past couple of years..... Throw in a couple of extra superstars, and he's a disaster... Also big mistake pissing off Jagr... He played great with Nylander the past couple of years and they let him walk in favor of Drury & Gomez......Plus the D sucks, which I knew before the season started...... Ranger fans know their hockey for sure..... You can't pull the wool over their eyes...That being said, i will freak in January.... They started slow last year also and got into the 2nd round..... No real need to sound the alarm YET....

Besides in order to the win the Cup you have to go thru the top West team anyway.
|
| Hockey anyone? Posted: 10/20/2007 9:44:22 PM | well rather than waste a double post, why is it that the Rangers would not pick up Nylander this summer. We all know how temperamental Jagr can be. If he's producing big numbers and so was Nylander it doesn't make sense why they did that. Jagr's going to play like he's in a funk now and eventually end up getting another sore shoulder or something.
The problem with having jagr on your team is you have to find somebody better on the team to set him straight, and when it's Jagr we're talkin' about, that's tough to do. I'm convinced he's never been the real impact player as much as he was when he first broke in and mentored under mario in 91 and 92 on those Stanley Cup winners with the Pens.
Just a guess. | |

Besides in order to the win the Cup you have to go thru the top West team That's nice. In order to win the Cup, you also have to make the playoffs, which would be the more immediate goal. they need to be 10 games above 500 by the end of the season to even have a chance. I'll lay ten to one on a buck that the Leafs couldn't give two hoots about how three teams in another division are playing whether they're Canadian clubs or not. Ask Sundin, or any Leaf for that matter, if he cares whether the Oilers or the Flames are off to a slow start.
Also, in order to win the Cup, you need to to play above five hundred hockey...as in like probably ten games above. All other things being equal, they're on pace for roughly a 73 or 74 point season by floundering below or at 500 hockey. This was another two points they should have had in the bag. So all other things being equal, they right now should finish worse than 9th like the last two years. Last year they were 9 games above 500 and didn't make the playoffs.
Sundin moved to within 5 of frank mahovlich for 27th all time in career NHL goals tonite.
He played well. Blake played really well, and Antropov played well. Tucker looked like he had some jump to his game tonite, just too bad they won't build a line around him. And Kilger played well. Belak was lucky he didn't get his head ripped off when buddy pulled the jersey over his head. belak was tuff in that fight. Undisciplined teams take bad penalties and the leafs had more than enuff of them tonite.
The defence looked horrible even when the leafs were taking the play to the hawks in the first two periods. Kubina and Gill made several misreads on unnecessary pinches and got caught up ice, and twice on one shift on weakside rotations there was a lone Hawk all alone to the side of the leaf net. I like White and Wisnewski, but they're still too too green to be steady 5 and 6 D-men. Maybe Colaicovo will help, but for how long, who knows with that guy's injury history.
These teams are doing very simple criss crosses half way in and the Leafs defencemen are reacting like that dog in the back of the cars with the bobbing head. they're not gonna make it Pucks if they keep giving up 3 and 4 goals in third periods...and there's no evidence to suggest that this trend is going to stop soon. Enjoy your kokanee.
Speakin' of fights, the Stortini/Nolan one wasn't bad either.

Recent history has proven that the teams usually left standing at the end, run, not stumble, out of the gate in the fall. Tampa Bay, winner in 2004, was 6-0-1 in October. Carolina, winner in 2006, was 8-2-1 the first month of the season. Anaheim, winner last season, started 9-0-3. The past 10 champions were a combined 78-17-14 in October. You get the idea.
Toronto Where to begin? These guys are on an emotional roller-coaster. They are still not good defensively, they have blown leads and wasted golden opportunities to beat better teams, despite a potent offence the power play has struggled, and they are life and death ever time they lace 'em up.
They managed to battle back to beat Florida, otherwise there would be full panic. They have Chicago and Atlanta on the horizon, two more games that can't give false hope, but can help keep the wolves at bay, not Bay Street.

| Hockey anyone? Posted: 10/21/2007 5:45:20 AM | | The problem with re-signing Nylander was he wanted a 4 year deal... Jagr only has 2 years left including this one..... Nylander would have been like 39 when his contract would have ended..... Plus he wanted over $4 mil a season so the rangers passed..... They had him at a bargin for 2 years and really deserved the raise... It was the length they had a problem with...... Yet, as much as I love Shanny, isn't he that age now??? But Jagr played great with Nylander and is having chemistry problems with both Gomez and Drury so far...... I guess you either have it or you don't.... If not, it's gonna be a loooooooooooong season..... | |

Sundin may not care about Canadian teams but you were asking me about why i bring them up. I keep tabs on all Canadian teams, irregardless of division.
You focus on leaf negatives, you good at that and i'll bring us up to speed on the positives. lol
Making the playoffs would be a successful season for the Leafs. I think that is coming. While its been a wild start, the nhl is comepetitive and the leafs have been behind a 7-1 loss and an 8-1 win and 2 games that have been decided with 30 seconds left so i see some positives.
Important players that will be back soon to help out include Wellwood, Devereaux, Colaiacovo and Bell.
Some positives i see...
1.goaltending...lots of goals given up but Raycroft and Toskola's play has been consistent and very good. The Defensce needs work, giving up 40 shots a game and the team taking dumb penalties. 2. returns from Sundin, Antropov, Blake and Stajan 3. Penalty killing has improved. 4. scoring
Belak did very well considering his jersey was over his head. Ask Kolic how he was feeling? No cuts on Belak but a few on Kolic who was bleeding all over the place. An even fight that Belak gets the nod on.

It's not chemistry problems as much as style problems. I'm really surprised that Jagr is playing with those two. Neither Gomez nor Drury have ever been regarded as playmaking centres. They are finishers - just like Jagr. All three of them want the puck. No wonder there are problems.
Jagr should be with Straka. Maybe put Gomez and Drury together on a line. I said it on July 1 - the Rangers did not address their problems when they signed those two, they just gave themselves another one. They have too many centres now - too many first-line centres - and it's going to take a lot of time for one or two of them to check in their ego and decide what's best for me isn't necessarilty best for the team.

Really? Drury i'll agree with, but Gomez no way. He is defintely a play maker. Gomez in his 7 seasons has had 1 30 goal season, all the other he never broke 20 goals. Last year he had 13 goals. I would not call him a finisher. He did however, have 47 assists and has broken 50 assist several other times in his career.
Drury is a finisher, and Gomez sets plays up. So them on a line together should work. Its early in the season and their new teamates. Give them some time.

Leafs into the ice-melt ...Jason Blake was peeved.
Standing in front of reporters in the solemn Leafs dressing room, Blake pulled no punches in questioning his team's work ethic when it comes to closing out games.
"Every time we have a lead, we get burned," the speedy winger calmly said after yet another Leafs collapse, an inexcusable 6-4 defeat to the fatigued Chicago Blackhawks at the Air Canada Centre.
"We sit back, don't play as hard, and that's why you take penalties."
The Leafs "don't play as hard?" As controversial as that suggestion might be, captain Mats Sundin had no quibble with Blake's candid words.
"I agree," said Sundin, whose two-goal effort was one of the few bright spots for an otherwise hot-and-cold Leafs team. "That third period was terrible. We were soft. We took penalties. We didn't skate well...
..."I don't know what's going on, but this is a big concern. When you are up 3-1 going into the third period against a (tired) team, you should be able to close it out."
Let's be honest here. When two prominent team leaders such as Blake and Sundin are wondering in public why this team does not always put out a maximum effort when two points are there for the taking, it does not bode well..
The stats tell the story.
In five of their first nine games this season, the Leafs have entered the third period either leading or tied and failed to go on to victory...
So much for home cooking.
With eight of their first 10 games in the alleged friendly confines of the ACC, the Leafs knew getting off to a good start to the season was vital.
Instead, they will need a win over the Atlanta Thrashers on Tuesday night to finish that 10-game stint at .500.
And now, Maurice must come to grips with a team that can't hold leads, gives up far too many goals, takes too many penalties (power-play chances were 7-1 in favour of the Hawks last night), and has a couple of its leaders questioning the team's effort

Penalty parade paralyzes Leafs
The Maple Leafs have no trouble seeing the error of their ways.
It's as plain as the growing number in the loss column and the pained expression on their faces after games such as the one they gift-wrapped last night for the Chicago Blackhawks
..."This isn't good enough. We have to play 60 minutes," Chad Kilger said after Chicago scored five third-period goals. "We can't blame anyone but the guys on the ice and we weren't good enough."
Another night. Another third-period collapse. Any thoughts of a comeback ended when Ponikarovsky took another hooking penalty in the offensive zone with less than a minute remaining. He suggested referees Paul Devorski and Dean Warren might as well have shown up wearing Blackhawks jerseys. But, said Maurice, the officiating wasn't why the Leafs lost.
"There's no complaining about the officiating. You don't usually see seven to one (Toronto had one power play to Chicago's seven) at home. But the only blame is on us. We're way over the limit in taking non-intelligent penalties."
Like in Buffalo when the decisive goal came after Pavel Kubina ran amiss of the rules.
"I don't know what it is. Every night it seems to be something else," Raycroft said. "It seems whenever we make a little mistake we get burned by it ... our game is puck possession and when we don't have the puck and
...The Maple Leafs came into last night's NHL action having played short-handed 54 times, the most of any team in the league. That doesn't happen because the refs aren't paid-up members of the Maple Leafs' fan club.
It has happened because too often the Leafs end up running around, as they did in the third period
...In the final 20 minutes the Blackhawks, other than on Kilger's goal that brought Toronto to within a goal, rarely let the puck anywhere near a Maple Leaf. Savard, avoiding anything that might end up on a Maple Leafs' bulletin board, did allow that even after having played Friday night, it was his team that was quicker. "We emphasize here that everyone moves their feet. But you have to have the ability to do it," Savard said.
The Leafs have yet to show they have that ability.
"We've got young bodies in the lineup and they can go all day," Savard said. "We're going to have some tough times but I like the heart of our team. That's all you can ask as a coaching staff, to play hard -- and the results will take care of themselves."
He didn't say what the Maple Leafs looked like. He didn't have to. The evidence was hanging above centre ice.

Another bump in Leafs' rollercoaster ride
TORONTO - The Toronto Maple Leafs will miss the playoffs for a third consecutive season if they continue at their current pace.
They are 3-4-2 for eight of a possible 18 points.
Their rollercoaster ride through the NHL schedule is torturing their fans, who were forced to walk a bed of nails Saturday night. The Leafs entered the third period up 3-1 and lost 6-4 to the Chicago Blackhawks.
Ouch...
...The Blackhawks beat Colorado 5-3 the previous night at home and didn't get to their Toronto hotel until 3 a.m. ET. Yet, they still had too much jump for the rested Leafs.
As soon as Chicago tied it 3-3 with two goals in 30 seconds early in the third, the Leafs appeared to become mesmerized.
"We're slowing down in the third period," said coach Paul Maurice. "It's not a conditioning issue, it's an attention issue
...As of Sunday, they were third (3.67 goals a game) in offence and 29th (4.11 goals a game) on defence in the 30-team league.
"The way I see it the most is that easy things that should happen just aren't happening," said Maurice. "D-to-D passes - there's a turnover and we just can't handle it."
Toronto is 28th in power-play efficiency and 18th in penalty killing

Another colossal collapse
Ahead 3-1 going into third period, club allows yet another opponent to storm back for the win.
..."We are doing some strange things with the puck," said Maurice. "(The problem) is above the shoulders, but it's in the reflexes of the feet and the hands."
Normally, a team might feel pretty good about themselves. But nothing's normal with the Leafs this year. They've had seven of their first nine games at home but are under .500 despite facing five backup goalies in a row, including former Ottawa whipping boy Patrick Lalime last night.
... said Maurice. "We've tried some different approaches. We've tried barking at them, we've tried perking up and being positive.
A turnover on the next shift resulted in Duncan Keith' first goal of the year and a 3-3 tie.
The Leafs are supposed to be a hard forecheck, puck control team, and they were for two periods, but forgot all about it in the third.
"We're not playing well," said Maurice. "We're not handling the puck. There's no ease in any parts of our games. We're so tight, and it affects all parts of our game.
"The way I see it the most is that easy things that should happen just aren't happening. D-to-D passes. There's a turnover, and we just can't handle it."

...As a certain over-rated rock band once sang: Sending out an S.O.S.
Can't anyone 'round here stop a few pucks, like maybe with that clearly intolerable two-goal lead?
Three times in the past week, the Maple Leafs have built up just such a cushion and three times they've gone down to defeat, doing so again last night 6-4 to Chicago in a textbook final-frame collapse.
Now, most coaches will tell you they don't much like getting a deuce ahead early. Paul Maurice was saying just that very thing, in the aftermath of this woeful loss. "You're not far enough away and you're one goal away from making the other team feel great.''
Earlier in the day, it was suggested to Maurice that there is significance – an implicit insult – in the fact that opposing teams have repeatedly started No. 2 goaltenders against his Leafs. He retorted wryly: "We play our backup every night.'' Chuckle-chuckle.
Some 10 hours later, it wasn't so funny.
...On the scoring tables, Toronto has benefited from the poor quality of masked men at the other end of the rink – Patrick Lalime last night, fifth consecutive second-stringer faced – with 35 goals. But that offensive spate hasn't translated much into corresponding wins because Toronto gives up goals by the bushel.
Asked about this worrisome phenomenon of Leafs' inability to protect a lead, these dreadful third-period implosions – whether it's due to a crisis of confidence or insufficient skills – Raycroft was hard-pressed to pick between trapdoor No. 1 and trapdoor No. 2. "Obviously, we don't have a lot of both.''
Cue the penalty alibi. "The last period, we were 10 minutes short. You can't keep momentum.''
There were rebounds galore in the final 20, nobody much helping Raycroft clearing pucks. "He suffered with the rest of the club in the third,'' said Maurice.

You focus on leaf negatives, Kinda hard not to. Sorry I worked for twenty years turning losing operations into winning ones. Rule number one when you're in a hole: Stop digging.
Defence wins championships, so there's no fear here that the Leafs will be around in April; unless they make changes now.
Making the playoffs would be a successful season for the Leafs. I think that is coming. Not that it matters pucks, but I'm wondering if you've ever actually played this game called hockey. Winning one third of your games does not get a team into the playoffs.
One thing to build a successful franchise is you cannot be afraid to hire people better then you. This rule was broken when these twits at the top greased Quinn in favor of the human wet noodle Ferguson. Ferguson is bum buddies with Peddie and the gimps upstairs. A better yes man we cannot find right now. Why do you think Muckler and Bowman walked away from the advisory position? Because they're real men that take a stand on real decisions. So they're automatically out of the running as far as the leafs dumbaSS brass goes. Nothing's going to change until you change GM's.
When they bring in a new GM, he will change the coach, because as many chuckles as Maurice tries to provide us all in his post game interviews, his team is embarrassing to watch...and it's not a hockey club. It's 4 or 5 good players with a whole bunch of guys that aren't getting with the program, which in turn suggests that there really is no program.
The whole league knows now you can beat the leafs with a backup goalie because they think scoring wins championships. It doesn't. Championships start with team defence, and until the leafs stumble upon this secret, magic formula, they will continue to reside in the lower depths of the standings.
Keep looking for positives there Pucks. But that would mean that you shouldn't bother reading any newspapers, sportsblogs, or sports shows because you seem to be about the only guy that thinks this team is headed in the right direction. Enjoy your day.

| Hockey anyone? Posted: 10/21/2007 12:02:59 PM | ^^^^LOL i skimmed thru all your copy and pastes....what you dont get it i already recognize their defense is a problem. I also have cleared stated her in this forum, that getting rid of Quinn for Fergie was a mistake and that i'm ill impressed with Maurice.
i just dont feel the need to post articles reiterating it all the time. Its redundant and boring.
"not that it matter Pucks, but im wondering if you have ever played this game called hockey"
if it doesnt matter, why do you ask? You can wonder all you want about that. Suggestionl, lets keep the personal stuff out of a debate and discussion.
"winning one third of your games does not get you into the playoffs"
Uh huh, we are only at game 9....74 more to go. lets discuss this at the end of the season shall we.
"nothing's going to change until we change GMs"
Agreed. as previoulsy stated pages ago.
"you seem to be about the only guy who believes this team is headed in the right direction"
Really! Several reputible sports experts/networks have predicted the leafs will make the playoffs. Not just me, sorry to burst your bubble there. If i had a say, i'd address team speed, defence, discipline and management/coach.

| Hockey anyone? Posted: 10/21/2007 6:25:29 PM | "Several reputible sports experts/networks have predicted the leafs will make the playoffs. Not just me, sorry to burst your bubble there." I'll take that even one step further. I didn't read any writers/analysts - American or Canadian – who picked the Leafs to finish out of the playoffs this year. They picked up a supposedly #1 goalie and prior to the season was believed to have one of the strongest goaltending tandems in the league. I still think Toskola will improve from his start (He'd better or he won't get another 15 games this season).
They also picked up a 40-goal scorer in Blake.
Those two signings should be enough for ANY team to improve by one point. (Not saying necessarily that they only need one more point than last year, but that's all they missed the playoffs by last year)
Seems to me most Leaf fans were praising JFJ this summer for finally making a substantial splash in the FA market. Now eight games in it's back to the status quo.
As for coaches....according to Sportsnet, Pat Burns has declared himself healthy and interested in coaching again. That panel was talking about him going to Atlanta, but wouldn't you think he'd rather return to Toronto?

| Hockey anyone? Posted: 10/21/2007 6:57:35 PM | big time jokester. I'd take Burnsy in a hearbeat. Let him finish what he started back in 93 and 94.
I wasn't sold on Ferguson before and i wasn't sold on him over the summer either. He made three good moves in Blake, Toskala and Bell for sure and i felt we'd improved our hockey club. Bell's rewards will come. I'm expecting him to make an impact, and because of his personal circumstances, I anticipate he'll be playing with an edge as a lot of guys are going to be trying to get under his skin. but right now this club lacks motivation. Zeroing out last nites game after leading after two on a tired hockey club should have been a no brainer. Pony boy obviously was playing with a hangover or something and literally singlehandedly cost them last nites game, but as a whole this team is not playing the way it should be playing with a relatively good blend of talent.
We should be much better than we are showing. I said after opening nite we'd be in the playoff hunt, but we haven't played anywhere near the level we played on opening nite, or the next nite in Ottawa. This club still lacks those necessary intangibles like character, tenacity, determination and leadership and maybe it will come the longer folks like bell and blake sit in the locker room. i still think if we can grab a gritty leader like Forsberg, we should grab him. Or even a guy like Mellanby. barely beating the panthers and losing to the hawks when this is supposed to be our easy stretch does not bode well for this team.
Maybe if they hit the road they'll play together better. sometimes a team comes together a bit more when they're on the road for awhile.
But this team has to all get on the same page and play much much better team defence or it's going to be avery long season in Hogtown. These two goalies we have are nowhere near as bad as this team is making them look and that's why they're a team that lacks pride and heart. Some 38 odd shots every nite for crying out loud. We need to throw this b.s. offensive mentality in the garbage and generate our goals from playing good defence they way upper echelon teams do. The trap is coming back in a big way and the leafs better wake up and start adopting some of it into their game structure and playbook.
We have fast enough players (excluding 3/4's of our defensive unit) to play a fast enough transition game off the trap i think.
