Welcome back Smack. It wasn't the same without you...no one to share the misery of the plight of Alberta's teams

As for the suggestion by the sportsnet hockey panel for the NHL to get involved in the Maple Leafs for "the good of the league, because the franchise is too important for what's going on here..." (paraphrasing)...
GIVE ME A BREAK!
The Leafs remain one of the, if not the most successful franchises in the league. No reason for the NHL to step in, just because they suck. If these analysts would take a look outside Ontario, they'd see two things: first of all, the vast majority of hockey fans thoroughly enjoy the struggles of the hapless Leafs. It gives us something to laugh at every Monday around the office water cooler, every season for the past 40 years.

Second of all, if the league should get involved with ANY "important" franchise, they should put a ton of marketing power behind the Chicago Blackhawks. Now THERE'S an important franchise in need of help. It's sad to see every day that they struggle to get 12,000 fans at the arena, despite the fact that they have two of the most exciting young players in the league in Toews and Kane –it's kids like those who are the future of this league. MARKET THEM! Everyone knows about the likes of Crosby, Malkin, Ovechkin and the likes. Start broadening the marking of the young NHL stars.

The Leafs could lose for another 40 years....they will still make millions every season because they have the following, despite their abyssmal record. That won't change. But what has happened in Chicago is truly sad. THAT'S the "Original 6" team the league needs to help.

Last night I watched the Chicago tampa game on my chums hockey package. I had like 6 games to pick from. Doing some renovations for him while he's out of town. With Havlat coming back into the lineup and khabibulin looking like he did in 04, this team has a good mix.

They were talking about a new tv contract that Rocky Wirtz just cut to televize 11 more home games this year and in the future. I guess there might be some positive change now that Bill Wirtz has passed on. Fans are coming back. The son wants a winning hockey club

I always liked that Chicago Black Hawk franchise. They might not fade in the spring as much as i originally thought. They got a good thing going there. The fans will come baack and they're some of the loudest fans in the league. At least they were years ago in the old Chicago Stadium with the old organ.

(Leafs lesser lights carry the load toninght. Leafs beat Thrashers 4-2)

whats wrong with the flames? hummmmm

sarich is weak at best on some nights good on others.
reggie looks average.
jucie back to his panter type play.
langkow been playing hurt but still not his usuall workhorse.
tangs wont shoot and when he does cant hit the net.
conroy seems to like to sit in the box for the last bit of every game.

but the number 1 thing

KIPPURSOF thats whats wrong. he is playing bad. cost the flames at least 4 points this season. really the only difference between saying whats wrong with the flames and hey we are on top of the northwest is him.

nolan been great a bad slump but shows up ever night unlike amonte
erikson is a beast, way better then i would have thought
lambo looking great
iggy better then ever
dion best season yet
moss is looking good

there really is alot of things going right just cant get that save when we need it. or for that matter cant get that save when it should be a save. its not the ones you stop its the ones you let in.

iron mike is not to blame, he is doing as much as he can. what do you do when your goalie lets in at least 1 weak one a game?

what the flames need.
a hard fought, hard hitting, team making type game. they need to gel. kippuer needs to relax and play like he can, most of all. ethier kipper finds his game or we make a trade or miss playoffs.

go flames go
in sutter we trust

iggy all time most games played as a flame now

"Kippersoff thats whats wrong"

ya he is off thats for sure...He has played so much. Why not give him a night off here and there, especially when his confidence is not at a high?

Iggy has been awesome. He has a real chance at 50 goals and 100 points.

"""...A somber note was struck in February of 2004, when ESPN named the Blackhawks the worst franchise in professional sports [1]. Indeed, the Blackhawks are now viewed with much indifference by Chicagoans, who feel that management is deliberately trying to alienate the fan base. Late owner Bill Wirtz raised ticket prices to an average of $50, and did not allow home games to be televised locally in the Chicago area. Many hockey fans in Chicago prefer the American Hockey League's Chicago Wolves to the Hawks, who have advertised themselves by saying "We Play Hockey the Old-Fashioned Way: We Actually Win." The club under Wirtz was then subject of a highly critical book, Career Misconduct, sold outside games until Wirtz had its author and publisher arrested.

...The Blackhawks reached another low point on May 16, 2006, when they announced that longtime TV/radio play-by-play announcer Pat Foley, the voice of the 'Hawks for 25 years, was not going to be brought back, a move unpopular amongst most Blackhawks fans. Foley then became the television/radio voice of the Wolves, seen as emblematic of Chicago hockey fans' embracing of a minor-league team over the 'Hawks, all because of the man known as "Dollar Bill" Wirtz.

...On 26 September 2007 after a brief battle with cancer, longtime owner Wirtz died at age 77. During a tribute and moment of silence for him during the Blackhawks home opener on 8 October 2007, the Chicago crowd displayed their displeasure with Wirtz's operation of the organization by booing the proceedings.

On 22 October 2007, Rocky Wirtz, Bill's son and the new chairman of the Chicago Blackhawks, announced the team is in negotiations with Comcast Sports Net Chicago to begin televising home games beginning on November 11th. This is something that his father had refused his entire time as team president. On November 20, 2007 Rockwell Wirtz named Cub's President John McDonough Hawk's president. McDonough is the architect of the Cubs incredible marketing machine established in the 1980's and 1990's..."""

wow someone can copy and paste! im going to completly change my views on the hawks based on this.

really does anyone at all care? does this matter? how about instead of searching other peoples work you take the time wacth the game and say what you think. you dont have to be correct, just give me whats on your mind once not some media garbage you read about.

stats are all fun and all. read what other people write but it proves you dont know much about the game. i hated the last weeks most cause i know this usless stats and un-info would end up on here. from the leafs being great to sucking. no one cares! tell me YOUR thoughts on your home team, not tsn's.

let me cry a single drop of water from my eye for the 2004 hawks......wait its 2007 almsot 08 it doesnt matter. thye have one of the bsest rookies now let them fold let my team pick up towes. or send the game up north where it should be. the first 6 mean nothing now. it was going to be 7 but a team folded before the nhl started cry for them.

sorry i live in the now. what have you done for me latley. the cups of the past must be nice if your 70 but i wanna see my team win now! id take the flames winning 2 cups in my lifetime then all the leafs cups. if i wasnt alive it doesnt count for anything....or do you leaves fans sit around and wacth replays of 1967 when you won a cup and act like you didnt know you were going to win?

^^^No kidding. A drunk's rant if ever there was one. At least he finally proved he could post something besides more flames drivel. There could be hope for the lad yet with all his in sutter blah blah stupidity. Reminds me of my neighbours three year old kid with his drivelling, or I guess that would be dribbling.

Well cheers to the flames in search of their needed 'kumbaya' game where they can all come together as a team and maybe do a much needed circle jerk at centre ice. Hahahah.

I need a laff. i think I'll go check where the flames are in the standings. Oh there they are. 4 points back of the playoffs in 13th with the 8th place club having 3 games in hand. Hmmm. Definitely need that kumbaya come together game. Everybody together now for buddy's hapless flames. Kumbaya kumbaya...ha

Thanks for comin' out sport. Sounds like you need more

Check msg 4828. No rant necessary. And no rant about them giving up the lead twice against the habs the other nite either. If they win or lose and play hard without all the mental errors, that's all you can ask a team to do. Now mind you they did make some mental errors the other nite against the habs, but really Price stole the game for them.

As for all the Leaf bashing. Take it all with a grain of salt. Doesn't matter what sports forum or what sports blog you hang out in, it always inevitably degenerates into a Leafs suck, versus a go leafs go debate. Sad but true. They're both the most loved hockey franchise as well as the most despised. Just comes with the turf.

One of the good things about the title of this thread is it's for hockey fans of all walks of life. It's just too bad that it also is degenerating into the same old same old charade. The thread's supposed to be about hockey period. Not just the leafs. But hey if you have to pull your goalie with 4 minutes left in the game to try and be competitive, and then get booed off the ice again, it must be getting frustrating out on the Red Mile. Almost enough to turn grown men into drunks i suppose.

What is happening to the Sens? Such a strong strong and lately they have been average at best.
Their current losing streak has hit 5 games.

Their first 20 games were mostly played at home. Now that the schedule is getting tougher they are slidding and getting a real taste of playing outside of their own building.

^^^""...the Sens...""
They suck...lol...just kidding

They had super pump going in their heads over the off-season and they came flying out of the blocks. That enthusiasms worn off now as the dog days of the long winter ahead begin to set in. Now is when good coaching comes in to play keeping the team focussed. And that's where i think the Sens dropped the ball over the summer. I know paddock's well respected around the league and all that, but,I'm not sold on the upper echelon shuffle there with Muckler getting the heave ho. I'm not a huge Muckler fan but it seemed with Muckler and Murray, you have a stronger combination than Murray and Paddock. maybe i'm wrong. time will tell, but i have my doubts about paddock being some super motivational genius. this club knows how to play some hockey but right now they're being outplayed and out hustled most nights. Even the game they outshot the islanders the other night, the islanders were never really out of control of that hockey game working the trap like a vice.

Plus we talked about this already. They didn't strengthen their club this summer on a net net basis. Donavon and richardson in to replace priessing and Comrie is a tie at best, but i think they're not as strong nor as deep. meszaros has been having some tuff luck lately dflecting pucks into his own net...and there's some folks that figure Emery will be out of the league in a year or two if he doesn't change his tune. he's usually the last guy on the ice for practice, he's usually late for meetings, practices, team bus departures. And he's also usually the first guy off the ice.

I think if ottawa had found a way to have both Chara and havlat in their lineup last year, they would have had enough grit in their lineup to take the Ducks. The Ducks basicallly bullied a lot of team off the ice last year, especially in the final.

Interesting you changed your mind on what needs to be done with our club Pucks, because i've half convinced myself that the only changes right now we should make is the upper upper echelon beyond Ferguson. This Peddie sounds like a complete moron and it's more than likey the reason apparently that neither Bowman nor Muckler really looked at the opportunity earlier in the summer very seriously. They knew they wouldn't have complete autonomy the same way that Maple Leaf Sports Entertainment gave Collangelo to turn around the Raptors, so they passed on the opportunity.

I still go back to that 3-0 game over the Sens a couple of weeks ago. If that's the best this club can play, it will be good enough to go a long way. This club has a lot of the parts it needs. When a club can play like that, they can beat anyone. Trick is to get the consistency and get all of them playing consistently every night. They have a two week road trip later this month over christmas. i think they'll find their identity and go on a roll. i'm hoping anyway.

Anyways. Christmas party season starts tonight with the first two this weekend. Maybe i'll get all juiced up and come in and post some rambling type of something or other so i can read it Sunday morning and groan at my stupidity and go back to bed.

Have fun.

Well, the Oilers, despite all the injuries, win four of their last five games to go .500 in November. You look at their D and three of their six have AT LEAST doubled their total NHL experience in games played this season. They have 5 rookies on offence (OK that includes Nilsson, who is a relative "vet" with 54 games experience) giving them an almost inconceivable 8 rookies in the line-up – that's 40 per cent of their entire line-up! And they went .500 in November! That either says a whole lot for the state of the NHL, or a whole lot for the potential of this exciting, young team.

Ahead of Calgary in the standings and 4 points out of a playoff spot. And to think that by this time three months from now, nearly half the line-up will have doubled their NHL experience from today. Unreal.

Sly,

What do you mean i changed my mind on what needs to be done with the Leafs...scratches head didnt think i had. I think Fergie needs the boot. Aside from the Tosokla and Bell pickup i think he has made some poor decisions. Locking in several over paid defencemen with no trade clauses was just one of the moves that pisses me off.
As for Peddie i dont know much about this dude...or what the hell he even does for that matter.

Jokester,

i watched the Oilers, Ducks game last nite and they looked good. I was surprised at how well they handled Anaheim. I have watched them play on a few other occassions against the Canucks and they have been competitive in those games i viewed as well. I was impressed with Garon a few games ago, and Rollie seems to be back. Those young kids the Oil like have like Cogliano are gonna be great too. Hemsky is finding his groove as well. Hmmmm if the regulars get back into the lineup, the Oil could make a playoff run and the way the Flames are playing this could be interesting.

Yes the Oilers are young and need a teaching coach (unlike MacT) who can develop the young guys. Most fans around Etown are so pissed they are losing but I think the team should take it on the chin this year and get the youngsters experience as it will pay off 2 years from now. However, most ppl are spoiled and won't put up with it.

As for the Flames, Kipmeister has been soft and it truly goes to show how important having a top flight goalie playing to his abilities is. As much as I don't care for the Flames, they should be doing much better with that line up. The NW division is comparatively weaker vs. the other 2 in the West so popping up to 3rd in the West shouldn't take a gigantic push to get there.

Go Oil, get lost MacT

"How do you Edmonton fans like Joni Pitkanen?"

I can't speak for all Oiler fans, but I really like Pitkanen. I don't think it's any coincidence that the Oilers have won 4 of the 5 games since his return. Had a goal tonight and is averaging 25 minutes per game. +2 Friday against Anaheim. + 2 in the 3-1 victory over Columbus earlier on in the week. Nothing at all wrong with Pitkanen.

Penner is the enigma. No one can blame him for taking what Lowe offered him. The question will always be why did Lowe offer him that kind of money. He has to be the softest forward in the league, for his size. Oddly enough, he too, had a goal tonight in Edmonton's 4-0 victory over the Ducks. Garon got the shutout - his second of the season.
