| Hockey anyone? Posted: 12/6/2007 9:21:01 AM | ^^^this poker crap is all over tsn, headline sports and sportsnet as well. While it will never take over hockey (in Canada), it blows me away that this is viewed on sports channels so much in our country as well.
its like watching paint dry.
notice how all the leaf bashing has suddenly stopped....oh right their on a winning streak. 3 straight for Leaf Nation. and back to 500 i believe. Keep it up blue boys.
Looking forward to flicking the channels past poker , and watching the Canucks and Preds tonite...There was a report out today, that is suggesting that Crawford (former nucks bench boss) ordered the attack on Moore, in connection with the Bertuzzi incident. Ohhh the drama never ends. Meanwhile, Bert not long ago offered $350,000 to settle his lawsuit...Moore's suit is something like for 15 Million. His parents have also filed a 1.5 million suit and well. (note...may be off a bit on the dollar amounts but there close.)

| Hockey anyone? Posted: 12/6/2007 5:41:50 PM | | Poker's appeal is understandable. Cards are such a worldwide thing and everyone thinks they could win the WSOP if given a chance, as opposed to watching sports, where you are a fan but know you could never play the game at a professional level. But yeah, watching it on TV is a real time-waster for sure. And what most people don't realize is that the one-hour show you're watching on TV takes about 10 hours to play. It's extremely condensed. Imagine how slow it would be if they showed every hand. As bad as watching fishing on TV. | |

Kaos, what do people usually do with all the egg they get on their face when they keep saying a players lousy and washed up and over the hill and his swedish counterparts lobby Holland to swing a deal for him? Not saying that's happenning but it's been steady for a couple of days now on the rumour mill that Sundin's heading to Hockeytown
Not quite sure what you are talking about. This is the first I have heard of Sundin to Detroit it's not in the Detroit papers. I hope not we don't need another Swede.

It was probably a little blurb in the Detroit papers. Naturally it was in all the Toronto media. I think the Toronto media half the time just cooks stories up on the off days to keep peak interest around leafland...kinda like the Avery thing a month ago.
Maybe if the leafs can stay on this roll all the trade rumours will die down. They're clamping down on shots against and they're starting to look like they have three lines going. Maybe conincidence, maybe not, but since Maurice inserted Belak for the Habs game, 9 out of 10 points in their last 5 and 4 wins in a row. Technically they're suddenly only 2 points out of 4th overall as the East is very tight right now, and only 7 back of the Sens. So we should slip into first in the division right around someime between Christmas and New years.
Ducks have to make a move. Maybe the Wings will be interested in getting Schniez back on their blueline.
As for Sundin, I hope he's not going anywhere unless it's a late season move to give him a shot at a Cup somewhere if our club discombobulates, which I don't think it will. But I think he's got a few good years left in him the way he's been playing this year.

| Hockey anyone? Posted: 12/7/2007 9:41:13 AM | Sly, That linc seemed to be to someones blog. The story has not appeared in the Detroit Free Press. Just wishful thinking out of Toronto. Leafs will finish middle of the pact with or without Sundin. Trade the bum to a team with proper Canadian leadership and let him win a Cup
As for the Leafs winning...terrific but last nights win over the Rangers was the only win in this streak against a team in a playoff spot. If anything it keeps the Gong Show of Leaf Nation rolling. Engrave the Cup Leafs have won four in arow!

perhaps, but in my view most want Sundin to stay.
The leafs would be kick as if they had another Canadian boy up front...Someone like Brenden Morrow or Shane Doan....Realistic players that are not elite but definetley quality guys with leadership.
Sens tailing, Leafs rising. hahaha gotta love it.

| Hockey anyone? Posted: 12/7/2007 10:48:32 AM | If you're interested, which I doubt you are, you can get all the stories from the TO media from Canoe or Toronto Star. As for who they're beating, they can only beat who they're scheduled to play and they're doing that. Good to see them trying to make a move now though because like a couple of GM's have said in the past, you're out of it long before you realize you are actually out of it.
9 points out of 10 puts them flirting with playoff contention, but still on the outside looking in. Another 8 or 9 points out of ten will put them on par with the number of wins most of the teams they're chasing presently have. So that would make them playoff contenders.
Then another 8 or 9 out of ten would make them solid playoff material, and would also put us past the halfway mark of the season. So it still takes 15 to 20 games to move up thru the pack at this point in the schedule. Alls they've done so far is close the gap and get back a few of the points they foolishly squandered thru the first quarter. now at least they're in striking range. last time I looked there were 3 points separating 2nd from 9th. Still the other guys all have games in hand and thay all also have net positive spreads between goals for and goal against and they're all also above 500. leafs need to get to ten or twelve games above 500 by the time it's all said and done.
Like youg Thomas Steen wisely said last night. They can't wait around till mid January and february to get their sh1t together. Just too high a mountain to scale by then. then the whole process begins a matter of nothing more than beat the clock.
As for trades, I'd like to see leafs move Ponyboy to allow us to move Bell up onto the wing with Sundin. This Bell was a 25 goal scorer his first year in the bigs on a very mediocre Hawks team at the time. He was an outstanding junior coming from the Killer Kilrea junior program out of Ottawa and he's a total diamond in the rough. Even Grapes mentioned this last Saturday night. This guy could end up helping make JFJ look pretty shrewd even if he does only have one goal right now..
Maurice hasn't found a spot for him yet. Maybe he could make a 4th line up out of Kilger Bell and Belak, but i think bell could prove his worth up on the front line. Ponyboy's Ok, but I think he's good trade value for maybe a low draft pick plus a journeymen defenceman along the lines of a Jackman, a Devries, or a Derek Morris type. If you're in it for the long haul, you can never have enough good defencemen laying around. we can start moving some others as well like lust Tlusty and Pohl and keep shoring up the defence.
I wonder who's going to pick up Rechhi this weekend.
Anyways, Big Silver Stick tourney in the City this weekend. Every arena is booked nonstop and every hotel room is filled to capacity. Restaurants and bars should be hopping all weekend. Phone calls all morning here with different old colleagues coming to town with their kids from all around the province. Time for some Christmas cheer. Have a good weekend.
Leafs in '08...start spreadin' the news...

| Hockey anyone? Posted: 12/7/2007 11:02:58 AM | Pucks, what the Leafs need to do is blow it up. Blow it up and rebuild it. Get rid of the entire front office. Hire a GM with a proven track record. Someone who has won somewhere or apprenticed under a winner. Hire a President who wants to win and not maximize the TPF. A President who will shut out Tennambaum and Peddie. Trade all the vets (especially Sundin) and stockpile draft picks. Fire their entire scouting staff and rehire and expand the scouting staff.
The worst thing that could happen to the Leafs is that they make the playoffs because then you are guaranteed the same bozo's will remain in position. The Leafs need to finish last 3 or 4 seasons and get some great picks.
This is the blueprint that lead to both the Wings and the Tigers resurgeance in Detroit. Mike Ilitch as owner of both was able to rebuild both franchises because he is first a fan and therefore wants to win.

| Hockey anyone? Posted: 12/7/2007 11:41:07 AM | ^^^well we were discussing Sundin i thought....and Canadian leadership needed on the leafs and Wings. Of course Leaf management needs an overhaul. The team itself does not need much though. Toskola is playing great (even when te leafs were slumping). He is number 1 even if Maurice wont label it. The defence (which needs work) has shown improvement and appears to be playing more as a team. The offence is in the top of the leauge, and wont be of any concern. The only surprise to date, is Blake's goal production. However, he is racking up the assists. (2nd on the team in that dept.). He speed and flare is a bonus as well. They have 3 solid lines and a good 4th checking line. Belak needs to stay in and not sit. Antropov, Stajan, and Steen are doing well and will have career years. and of course Mats is playing well, and averaging more than a point a game. The only real disappointment i see up front is Tucker. He has not been himself. He has shown in juniors and in the nhl that he is a goal scorer...so where that has gone i dont know. | |

| Hockey anyone? Posted: 12/7/2007 6:49:03 PM | Just watching the Oilers/Blues...Brad Boyes scored his 16th. That had to be one of the most expensive trades for the Leafs in the past 5 years...Boyes, McCauley and a 1st rounder for Owen Nolan.
As for the Ducks...according to McKenzie, it's not going to cost them all that much after all to get Neids back. They only have to drop $880,000 in salary somewhere, thanks to something called a salary "tag". He doesn't do a very good job explaining it, but looks like Schneider might stay there for awhile.

| Hockey anyone? Posted: 12/8/2007 10:43:48 AM | ^^^Brad Boyes ... had to be one of the most expensive trades for the Leafs in the past 5 years...Boyes, McCauley and a 1st rounder for Owen Nolan.
The first rounder ended up being D-man Mark Stuart for the Bruins, part of, I believe the blockbuster Joe Thornton deal.
Interesting to look back on that deal. Definitely not one of Quinn's best deals as a GM. The luck of the irish came back and bit the mighty Quinn in the arse on that one. McCauley was no great loss really. He came over in the Doug Gilmour/Dave Ellett deal to Jersey around 96 i think it was, where we got of all people, future Oiler hardrock defenceman Jason Smith as well as the pride of Timmins Stevey Sullivan.
McCauley i don't believe is even playing hockey now. He was probably Carlo Collaicovo's mentor on how not to stay uninjured for an entire career. Quinn was patient with him and after 5 years he finally showed up in the 01/02 playoffs potting all of Gary Roberts rebounds while Roberts crashed the net. That was the year Sundin missed most of the playoffs and when he finally did come back we ended up getting eliminated in the Finals to the Canes.
Quinn couldn't sell the farm fast enough in 02/03. Maybe he saw the writing on the wall and decided to shoot the works as he stepped down that summer as GM in order for the new owners, OTEP, to put JFJ in place. We got all of 26 goals I think it was from Nolan and then had a big out of court settlement with him before his departure. He was injured for the 03/04 playoffs and never played another game for the leafs. 65 games that season before he got injured.
That year at the trade deadline Quinn also traded away draft picks for us to get next to zero productivity out of Glen Wesley, zero games out of Douggie ( he wrecked his leg the first shift back in Calgary), and a whopping 3 games from Phil Housley...all in order for us to be eliminated in 7 games by Philly in the opening round. Housely and Gilmour retired shortly thereafter and Wesley went back to the Canes in the offseason..
Boyes linemate in St. John's at the time was Ponyboy. Boyes also potted his 17th as well last night which puts him on pace for 52, 53 goals this season. He was a monster with the Erie Otters in junior, but i think Quinn didn't like him because he wouldn't sign a contract the first year or something like that. I thought he maybe he sat out a year or something, but maybe that was someone else. I think the last 50 goal scorer Leafs had, and they haven't had many, was Davey Andreychuck. A potential 50 goal man would look good on a line with Anddroppoff and Sundin.
|
| Hockey anyone? Posted: 12/8/2007 11:05:08 AM | I forgot about Andreychuk. I would have guessed Gary Leeman.
I don't think Boyes will get to 50, but he sure was on fire last night. I see that the Thrashers picked up Recchi...I was hoping Lowe would grab him, for the experience factor.

Rick Vaive holds the franchise record with 54.
Sittler had 4 40 plus goal seasons with the Leafs.
Sundin had 41 goas in 97 and 41 in 2002.

| Hockey anyone? Posted: 12/8/2007 12:29:17 PM | Detroit won 3 Cups with out a 50 goal scorer. Looks like Zetterberg will make it this year. He and Datsyuk are on fire and with Hasek postingzeros....can any team play with the Wings? | |
|
| Hockey anyone? Posted: 12/8/2007 12:50:39 PM | """Leeman pocketed 51 in 1990.""" Yep. Fletcher dealt him at just the right time too. We got Gilmour and Macoun from the Flames in that 1992 New Years day 10 player deal that suddenly brought the Leaf franchise back to life. Rumour had it at the time Leeman had been banging either Olczyk's or Vaive's wife. I can't remember which one, I'm thinking it was Vaive, but Leeman was definitely a problem in the locker room.
It didn't help that he had been a gold gloves boxer out of the Cabbagetown boxing club so whichever the jilted party was he ended up getting a few black eyes when he tried to settle up with Leeman. Olczyk and Vaive had both been traded away at different times the prior two seasons. Looking back on it now, I'd say ole Cliff Fletcher kinda fleeced his old team on that Leeman deal. Macoun was a really good D man, plus I think we got stoner Nattrass as well plus Simcoe boy and ex Hamilton Fincup goaler Rick Walmsley -------
""...Detroit won 3 Cups with out a 50 goal scorer.""" true. but they did have a couple of 600 goal men in Shanny and Stevey Y, and for the third Cup they added a 700 goal man in the Golden brett.

| Hockey anyone? Posted: 12/8/2007 1:37:25 PM | I remember(faintly) many years ago when the Wings were terrible and Walt McKechnie was bragging about his leading the team in scoring...he was traded soon after! It's all about chemistry not about 50 goal scorers. | |

| Hockey anyone? Posted: 12/8/2007 5:00:31 PM | | That old fart took them to their last Cup and to the confrence final last year. As good as Osgood has been the feeling in Detroit is if they are to win in the playoffs it will be with Hasek. Fortunately he beginning to straighten it out as he gets healthy. Wings are hurting but they keep on winning. | |
