|
| Hockey anyone? Posted: 12/10/2007 7:28:09 AM | | How can you be sick of Crosby he is another great ambasodor of the game. He has already matured incredibly in his first couple of years. A great talent and well spoken. It's not his fault if the media over-hypes him. He is carrying on the Great Canadian tradition of Richard, Howe, Gretzky, Lemieux. Long live Sid the Kid! | |
|
| Hockey anyone? Posted: 12/10/2007 7:53:17 AM | Pretty mature 20 year old. I was impressed watching him deal with all the media on that western swing. He did the old stars proud the way he hops out of the car with pen in hand and just starts autographing things left right and centre. Classy kid with all the attention. Good hockey game against the Canucks as well with the penalty shot and all the fixin's.
I'd have to agree; he's shaping up to be a pretty good ambassador, and he's still just 20 which is pretty impressive in light of how immature most guys are still in their early 20's. He's in pretty good shape too. Strong legs and cardio. He plays hard out there.
I'm starting to like this kid. Give him another couple of years to bulk up the way Vinny Lecav has and you've got a ton of a hockey player there.
I think Mario's been tutoring the kid well. Anybody that can put up with that dweeb of an interviewer Scott Oake on after hours after the Saturday night game has my vote. A more anal retentive interviewer I don't think I've ever seen. Wish CBC would take the gas can to that guy.
|
| Hockey anyone? Posted: 12/10/2007 11:57:38 AM | well after all the hype of sid the kid any game i have wacthed hasnt done anything to speical. dont get me wrong he is going to be a great player, but all the hype is getting old.
the nhl has more then one star. what about hearing about iggy, phaneuf, Lecavalier, Zetterberg, Kovalchuk, or A.O. and many more. why are they trying to make the nhl seem like a one trick pony?
go flames go in sutter we trust

| Hockey anyone? Posted: 12/10/2007 1:05:00 PM | """...why are they trying to make the nhl seem like a one trick pony? """ Seems a bit like a kid with a new toy mentality when it comes to the fans. They've never seen him play and chances are the folks out west seldom get to see him other than hilites.. The leaf game finished up early saturday nite so CBC had a half hour to kill before the Canucks game. The fans look(ed) like they're eating it all up. Everyone in the rink was down at the Pens end watching the kid go thru his warmups. It looked kinda wierd, everybody with their pocket phones and digital cameras snapping tons of pix of a guy warming up.
part I found ironic was watching him put the puck upstairs in rapid fire succession at the goal line before he headed off. He nailed everyone of them but didn't get it up there when time came on the penalty shot on Luongo.
It's CBC too. Could be a hint of war propoganda to get the balanced schedule in place. Trying to make the western fans look really hard done by by only getting the Kid out there once every three years. They're good hockey fans in those three cities...well the Alberta fans are knowledgable for sure. Still sometimes not convinced on those wild fans in Vancity, but all three cities were pretty supportive of the kid. Might as well send him west every year. He's probably still not filling the buildings in jersey or Fla or even tampa.
Maybe CBC's trying to use him a bit as a pawn to lobby more for the balanced sked. TSN followed him around like glue as well.

He's a great scorer already, when others took more time to achieve the scoring stats. Sid is this good already, can you imagine when he hits his prime? or matures even more....look out..

| Hockey anyone? Posted: 12/11/2007 1:57:54 AM | Caps are looking good since the coaching change. The majority of the team is youngsters and Budreau has works with a lot of youngsters. They forechecked the crap out of the Devils and wanted to win it, it's about time. Go Caps!!!! | |

| Hockey anyone? Posted: 12/11/2007 7:25:31 AM | Yup...a change is sometimes needed...Caps are 3-1 in December and beat the well playing Devils.
How bout those Leafs...winners of 5 or their last 6...Their only loss during that stretch was to Boston who is their killer this year it seems...Leafs have take 2 of 3 from the Habs and two of 3 from the Rangers i believe this year but have yet to beat the well improved Beatown team. They still played well that game i thought...just poor on the powerplay..it was a good checking game and the key was their defence, even in the loss only allowing 19 or 20 shots against.
Since the end of November the leafs defence has completely changed, giving up only 9 goals against during those 6 games....while having 24 goals for. Leafs are back to #1 in offence in the East and #2 overall behind the Wings...With goals against dropping, and better play defensively, the Leafs will and are making their surge.
Go leafs Go. | |

| Hockey anyone? Posted: 12/11/2007 7:55:39 AM | Brucey Boudreau's been coaching a long time. He'll help stabilize the Caps situation.
I only caught the second half last nite of the Leafs game but it was 0-0 when I got in. Since their debacle in Phoenix they've played some good hockey. This could be the theme to this years club. They have to really hit rock bottom before they change their ways. Remember that come playoff time. .
Saturday nite was a good example with an absolutely pathetic powerplay. man they'd just keep passing it and passing it around the perimeter for 2 minutes. Then occassionally Kaberle would drop it into the corner for Blake while big Chara is draped all over Blake. Why Kaberle wouldn't feint the dump in from the blueline and just get the puck on net is beyond me. Had the leafs powerplay been working Saturday night even 1 out of 6 times we would have got a tie and a possible shootout win. had it gone 2 for 6 Saturday night, we'd now be on a 7 game roll. But here last nite, they worked the powerplay exceptionally well.
Maurice has 4 lines going now. Some nights I'm not sold yet on the third line as they sometimes lack penetration and are kept to the outside, but when they do get inside, Devereaux and Stajan seem to have some nice chemistry.
They're the first club this year to hit the century mark last night for goals against, but that's 14 goals against in the 7 games since their lowest point in Phoenix. Now comes their road trip. Leafs got a standing ovation at the ACC last nite at the end of the game. But, they'll see a different Tampa team next week. That sure wasn't the same Tampa team I watched against the Sens last week. Sens got lucky and potted two in the final minutes last week to salvage a point.
Wellwood and Blake are really working well together...and wonder of wonders, Antropov is now just 3 goals off his career best of 18. White and Wosnewski are improving each game out but Wonewski still comes across a bit mentally lazy on picking up his man sometimes, as well as still making some errant clearing passes.. He let the guy go by him untouched last night to foil Vesa's shutout. Same thing on Saturday night. He went way too far wide to the boards and the Bruin just skated right into a 2 on 1 on Hal Gill on the bruins first goal. Little hinges swing big doors.
They're turning the corner....or actually now they've turned the corner and we should see some competitive hockey now if the lines stay healthy. Knock wood for good health.

i wonder if Tjislty (sp?) will get re inserted after he heals from injury. i dont want to see Belak go off the 4th line coz of this ...i noticed that Bates Battaglia was put on waivers to make roster room...Good choice.

| Hockey anyone? Posted: 12/11/2007 9:39:23 AM | | gotta a question , does it bother people in canada that they cant win the stanley cup, the reason i ask the question is that when we lost in basketball in the olympics , that was a source of humltimation, but thats only once every four years, but the stanely cup thing is every year, year after year, when was the last time a canadian team won, was it 94?.the stanley cup has been in south flordia and soutern californa,2 places that never even get snow , what a joke!!!!!!!!!! | |

| Hockey anyone? Posted: 12/11/2007 9:59:42 AM | ^^^nope not really....all you have to do is look at the amount of teams in today's NHL...30. only 6 of those are from Canada. When you have 24 American teams the odds are pretty damn good for US cities to win the cup...Add to the fact that the NHL has implemented a salary cap and you have many more teams in the US that are competitive and playoff bound.
"2 places that never even get snow, what a joke"
what so hockey is only for countries that get snow?....Puuhhllease.
The real issue is looking at where the players come from...Most NHL teams are loaded with Canadian players...Look at last years cup chamption Ducks...Majority from Canada...I believe 19 to be close....The stars of Anaheim including Pronger, McDonald and the Neiderymeurs are all from Canada.
"the stanley cup has been in south florida and souther calirfornia"
well that great to gear interest in those areas where hockey is not popular.
In last years final i was cheering for the Ducks....why would i do that being Canadian...coz i knew that most players were from Canada and im a huge fan of our B.C boys...Scott and Rob. (Besides Ottawa stinks lol)
When you break down cup champion Tampa Bay's team, its similar to the Ducks......can you say CANADIAN players...yup, yup,, The Big 3 - Lecalvalier, Richards and St. Louis are all Canada boys...

| Hockey anyone? Posted: 12/11/2007 10:10:35 AM | | god man calm down , it was just a question.some intesting points you made though, i guess its the same way in basketball, i mean ther are alot of nba players that go to play for there home country.i was just wondering about that, really i was wondering because hockey is really not that popular in this country anymore, cant even find it on t.v. much these days.just wondering because i know it big in canada, but not here.just thought i would get some feed back from a person that likes hockey.i would bother me if the nfl expanded to a country and not to mant people cared about football, thats all thats y i asked | |
|
| Hockey anyone? Posted: 12/11/2007 10:43:20 AM | You're right Denny. It's the current commissioner - there's even speculation that the NBA sent him to the NHL because they knew he would botch things in a sport which has traditionally been more popular than basketball, played at the same time.
Bettman is gung ho on setting up teams in the stupidest places possible, but has quashed teams moving to hockey hotbeds like Hamilton.
|
| Hockey anyone? Posted: 12/11/2007 10:46:26 AM | | just seems to me that u might want to set up in canada, it is more popular there, i agree beetmen does seem like a crapy commisioner. | |

| Hockey anyone? Posted: 12/11/2007 10:58:06 AM | | i dont see why there not there already, one thing in america everything is getting expensive, so they can pay there salareis, there only so many events people can affored , so theres a good chance that hockey will just keep declining, and that ashame in my opinion | |
|
| Hockey anyone? Posted: 12/11/2007 11:27:05 AM | Bettman's a retard. He's set us so far back in the American markets it's ridiculous. The games televised are apparently on some specialty channel now like outdoor living tv or something like that. NHL is now classified in the US as a specialty sport or something like that. i can't remember the title they've given it. it compares to beach volleyball now in popularity down there. Not that i have anything against watching womens beach volleyball mind you. -------------- Pucks, Lusty Tlusty is healthy. he's been playing all the time he's been down with the Marlies. He scored the other night for them.

Also we're probably going to see Belak getting sat and the 4th line getting wasted here soon even if it is a darn good ground and pound line. Collaiacovo's apparently almost ready to return. Maybe he'll last longer than a week. This new found chemistry the leafs have going will have to be adjusted to fit this guy in.
"""...Hard-luck Colaiacovo hopeful he can return to Maple Leafs lineup by end of the month...""
http://www.thestar.com/Sports/article/284028 --------------- Here's some news today: CANADA'S TOP ATHLETE Sidney Crosby wins Lou Marsh award First hockey player since 1993 to win...
Crosby emerged on top out of a strong field of contenders headlined by basketball’s Steve Nash (winner in 2005), skier Erik Guay, third in the World Cup downhill standings last season, IBF world super bantamweight boxing champion Steve Molitor and kayak world champion Adam Van Koeverden.
Recent winners of the award include auto-racing driver Jacques Villeneuve (1997, 1995), baseball player Larry Walker (1998), Olympic athlete Catriona Le May Doan (2002), golfer Mike Weir (2003), and skaters Jamie Sale and David Pelletier (2001).
Olympic speed skating star Cindy Klassen won the award last year after winning five medals at the Turin Olympics...

Doesn't bother me any. However, i would like to see the Leafs bag at least one more before i leave this earth. Every player and coach on the winning team that wins get their won day with the Cup in the summer. Coach carlyle of the Anaheim Ducks put it on proud display at the Azilda Arena this summer, part of the Greater City of Sudbury now. We've had the Cup here a number of times. Al Arbour the old coach of the dynasty-like Islanders in the late 70's, early 80's was from Sudz as well. Lots of NHL'ers from here.
But there's probably some Canucks it bothers, just like there was some Yanks that were offended when the Bluejays picked up back to back World Series pennants in 92 and 93. By the way, without wandering too far off topic here, Naismith, regarded as the founder of basketball, was a Canuck. Cheers.

This young guy has all kinds of promise too. A quality young player who can fill in if Steen, Stajan, Kilger or Deveraux get hurt.
As for Collaiacovo, i like this guy too. I look forward to him joining the team and hopeful the Leafs send Woznewski down to the Marlies.
