i believe it was Jokester and Wingnut who were pushing the Wild as an elite team.
Minnesota is a good team but far from elite.

| Hockey anyone? Posted: 12/26/2007 7:29:11 PM | That argument ended MONTHS ago...but seeing's how you are bringing it up again, like I said back then and I will iterate here, all I said is that the Wild are a very good REGULAR SEASON team and that I predict them to win the Northwest Division. I still say they will win the division and in that regard, relative to everything else, I always call every year's division winners the "elite" for that season. Kind of the same way many writers in Canada refer to the NHL quarter-finals as the "Elite Eight", stealing the term from the NCAA's March Madness. God forbid I didn't happen to ask all of you permission to use an over-used phrase. Like I said in my acceptance of all the arguments against using the term, it's clear that the NHL has no elite teams, and hasn't had any for at least 10 years. I'm ok with that. | |

"all i said is that the Wild are a very good REGULAR SEASON team and that i predict them to win the Northwest Division"
your prediction is your right. No worries there. I do not see the Wild winning the division. I see the my Canucks and Luongo taking it....perhaps Colorado. The wild are having defensive issues. A couple months ago i remember mentioning that the wild for the first time were having goaltending issues. Say la vive, last nite they give up 8 goals...ouch!
"it's clear that the NHL has no elite teams, and hasn't had any for at least 10 years"
Yup agree with you there.

| Hockey anyone? Posted: 12/27/2007 3:28:16 PM | | What do you people clasify as "Elite"? | |
|
| Hockey anyone? Posted: 12/27/2007 3:46:28 PM | """...Say la vive"""???? lol...methinks you're looking for c'est la vie...such is life en francaise
What do you people clasify as "Elite"? You'll have to go back about 25 pages kaos to go thru it all again. Like jokester says, or I guess it's the prairie pundit now, every night we hear these dweebs on Sportsnet and Sportsdesk going on and on about the Sens being an elite team this year, etc etc. So in terms of present day play, the Sens and the Red Wings are elite squads. The rest of them right now are just a hodge podge of average hockey clubs grinding out a living.
Whether they classify as purely elite teams all time is another matter. For the record I think the Sens rely way way too much on one line for me to be thiking these gay caballero's are an elite hockey club. their record says otherwise, but we're still not even halfway home.
Oh and i got the lowdown over the holidays on the good ole Sens ways of relieving stress this past summer while they waited out the 11 days to get the Stanley Cup final going. I've been sworn to secrecy on it, but there was four of them in the car the one night, not just the one defenceman that the team doesn't seem to want to resign this year. And it wasn't just the one night either. If i tell ya's i'll have to kill ya's all, or someone might kill me, so it's all on the QT until someone else in the ottawa area lets loose on what the lads do for recreation while they're not playing.
Something very similar to why good old grant Fuhr ended up sitting out a season. that's OK. I heard once that you're sins will find you out, so eventually this will all come out.
|
| Hockey anyone? Posted: 12/28/2007 7:44:46 AM | Wings smoke Avs without four of their regulars. Henrik Zetterberg (back spasms), Tomas Holmstrom (knee) and Kirk Maltby (back) didn't make the trip because of injuries. Chris Chelios healthy scratch.
With the "Elite" Red Wings making mincemeat out of the NHL opposition this season will this be the first NHL team to win a Cup without a Canadian as its's heart and soul guy.
Can anyone beat the Wings?
|
| Hockey anyone? Posted: 12/28/2007 9:43:41 AM | "will this be the first NHL team to win a Cup without a Canadian as its's heart and soul guy."
Nope. The Stars won with Modano as the heart and soul of the team
|
| Hockey anyone? Posted: 12/28/2007 10:20:03 AM | lol yes I mis spoke and I posed that question here a few months back. The Wings are scary good and last years run to the Confrence final proved they are tough enough to go deep in the playoffs.
Although San Jose and Aneheim are heating up again. The Cup will defiantely stay out west again.

| Hockey anyone? Posted: 12/28/2007 5:29:24 PM | hahah ya all knew i was going to have to bring that back up at some time. as i was expection it brought back up if the wild were unstopable.
any one else think its time the nhl gets rid of the video goal review. they get it wrong so many times, or dont play by there own rules. i belive it would be alot better having that human error back into the game. not human error caused by machine or they dont have the angle.
scrap the shoot out as well, it was fun the first 3 times but has to be the most boring play in all of sports now. i would rather wacth darts then another lack luster last 10 min of a game a slow ot and a skills comp. its just not hockey and the teams that exel at the shoot out play for the shoot out when the game is close.
how about iggy just ripping it up. guys going to be in the running for some hardware this year.

As for the video review i'll disagree their...Sometimes the refs miss critical calls...Im sure your talking about Calgary's 4th goal that was disallowed? That was as close as they come...Irregardless the Flames came back and buried 3 goals against Luongo which should of been enough to beat the Canucks. However, your Flames D and Kipper look terrible.
Go Canucks Go. | |

I'll take the shootout over the point for a loss. That's the rule that really drives me nuts. Rewarding failure.
|
| Hockey anyone? Posted: 12/29/2007 4:24:51 PM | Love the shootout but keep it for the regular season only. It's great to see the creativity of the skill players.
I don't want to go back to the days when teams had 20 ties on their record.

Perhaps based on Detroit's recent playoff record. Haven't they lost to the eighth seed in the opening round two of the past three playoffs?
|
| Hockey anyone? Posted: 12/29/2007 5:25:45 PM | Damn Leafs... They are going to get Maurice and Fergie Jr fired.
Wow... do they look bad!
And Avery is killing them.

Lets look at the Western Confrence Play off records.
If you award 1 pt for each round of the playoffs and an extra point for winning the Cup here are the results.
1 Year... Aneheim 5 pts Detroit 3
3 year... Aneheim 8 pts San Jose 7 pts Detroit 6 pts Colorado 6 pts
5 Year... Aneheim 12 pts Detroit 12 pts San Jose 9 pts Colorado 8 pts
10 year... Detroit 27 pts Colorado 23 pts Dallas 19 pts Aneheim 15 pts This myth about Detroit being a poor playoff team has been busted!
|
| Hockey anyone? Posted: 12/29/2007 7:52:53 PM | "This myth about Detroit being a poor playoff team has been busted!"
First off, all I said is that they lost in the opening round two of the past 3 playoffs. I didn't say anything about them being a poor playoff team. And I was wrong. it's 2 of their past 4...they lost in the SECOND round to Calgary. They lost the year before that in the first round to the Ducks.
Second off...your chart is skewed. Can't help but notice you skip the years that Detroit tanks it in the first round. Clearly, after 2 years (Detroit 4) and four years (Detroit 7) they would be well down the list in those years. I don't have the time to bother doing so myself, but I'm guessing you will only reply to this if I'm wrong and you're right so I will take your lack of response as confirmation
Damn Oilers blew a 3-goal lead tonight, losing 5-4 in overtime to Minny...oh well...thank god for that point for an OT loss

|
| Hockey anyone? Posted: 12/29/2007 8:26:00 PM | Myth Busters I chose those for separation not manipulation but here are the others.
2 year... Anaheim 8 pts Detroit 4 pts Edmonton 4 pts San Jose 4 pts
4 Year... Aneheim 12 pts Detroit 7 pts San Jose 7 pts
Gee 2nd place in both. What a terrible playoff team the Wings are.
I accept your apology on behalf of the 2008 Stanly Cup Champion Detroit Red Wings.

Once again the Presidents Trophy will mean squat come playoff time and when the REAL season begins. Regular season champs does not guarantee anything come playoff time.

Pucky you are a genius. I never would have thunk that.
Vancouver's current team and past history do not indicate they have the ability to make a run at the cup. They also have the same achilies heal as Detroit ...lack of Canadian leadership.
San Jose and Aneheim are the two teams I fear most.

^^^there's Dallas too that your forgetting about..i'd fear them as well. Brenden Morrow is a great Canadian leader.
looks like the Wings are in for a possible first round loss again. They are going to have to face the Ducks, Flames, Hawks or Blue's. Before you knock Chicago (remember Savard has that team running well, with young stars like Towes and Kane) and ST.Louis (this team has completely changed as well with Kariya and company so they are not a walk through either.
