The AMP Energy NHL Winter Classic, broadcast New Year's
Day on NBC, earned a 2.6 overnight rating and a 5 share (1-4:45 p.m. ET), the best
overnight NHL regular season rating in more than a decade (Feb. 3, 1996 on Fox,
six-game regional, 3.0/7). The Pittsburgh Penguins defeated the Buffalo Sabres 2-1
in the first U.S. outdoor game in NHL history. Twenty-year-old Sidney Crosby, the
NHL's reigning MVP, scored the game-winning goal in a shootout. The overnight rating
also surpasses Wayne Gretzky's last game, which was broadcast on Fox (April 18,
1999, 2.5/6).

Very nice.

surprised no one is talking about the WJH tournament. Is this because Canada is just expected to win gold?
Canada did not get a bye this year....Competition is tougher it seems...Russia looks good and the Americans are undefeated too.

I'd love to see a Canada vs Sweden Gold medal game. (as Canada lost to Sweden in the prelim round)

USA vs Canada - Semi Finals ...Friday on TSN....be there.

Canada has a very young team this year. They have the most eligable returnplayers for next year. They are having trouble scoring and in order to beat the US they will need some one other than just Taveres to csore.
This game is just a semi, this is the Gold medal game. The winner will win the Tourney.

yup there young...and many eligible players like Kane and Towes are playing in the NHL already.

Scoring has not been great indeed...Someone else is going to have to step it up if they plan on playing for Gold.

"yup there young...and many eligible players like Kane and Towes are playing in the NHL already."

Just FYI Pucks...Patrick Kane is an American...played on the US squad last year.

Sam Gagner was eligible however...still will be next year, believe it or not!

Yeah...and with (arguably) the best nation's best two juniors playing an average of 5 minutes per game!
I certainly didn't agree with Hartsburg's use (or lack thereof) of Tavares and Stamkos... or even Boychuk for that matter ... but you can't argue with success.

^^^indeed. could we agree that Canada world junior teams have been elite status?

LOL

Canada hockey compared to other nations is just superior indeed...elite is the only word that describes us with this sport.

Yep Congrats again this year to our Juniors.

I wonder if when we eventually lose one of these tourneys like we did after our 5 year run in the 90's all canada will wonder what's wrong with our junior program. We set the bar pretty high. 10 of these kids are eligible to play again next year.

Meanwhile, back in the bigs, Leafs drop a tuff one to Philly after peppering 56 shots at Nittimaki. Raycroft played OK. His own man Strallman killed him on the 2nd goal. The other two goals nobody checked the blind side man again. 42 games in and they're still not picking up the weak side guy.

Sundin with a pair moves to within one of the Rocket. Oh and here's a surprise; Collaiocovo's hurt again. Hopefully he's Ok because we do deserve more than 5 games this season from this guy. Plus, it'll put him behind pace to actually play 82 games in less than 7 years since he was drafted in 01...

So who's going to get Forsberg and who's going to sign Cujo? Avs are totally banged up now without Captain Canada and Burnaby Joe, so i doubt Foppa wants to go back there now.

And one more thing. One of these days, somebody's going to seriously wound that Downie kid. What a little cheap shot artist that little prick is. Live by the sword, die by the sword for that one.

Well, I don't think anyone is going to pick up Forsberg, in light of his injury in November. He's done.
As for Cujo, I was thinking the Avs, prior to their injuries...but they won't be going anywhere, so how about the Rangers? It's looking more and more like Lunquist was a one-year-wonder...they're going to need someone or something. I think they need more than Cujo can supply, but ....

Totally agree with you Sly on the Dummie (Downie) punch. I'm NOT a Leaf fan but, Blake sure didn't need that. All tied up by the refs, no chance to defend yourself and bamm ... !

My vote says suspend Downie AGAIN.

Oh yeah ... when do the Leafs play the Flyers again? Can't wait for the re-match.

Yup, that was pretty crappy of Downie. I loved how he justified his actions: "That's just what I do" Starting to really dislike the Flyers because of the uber-goon, Hatcher, and now this Downie guy.

ya those bad boys in Philly...what a bunch of undisciplined players they are...
5 suspensions to the Flyer team this year alone.
I was surprised Tucker didnt retaliate (later in the game)....he was wise not to blow the powerplay opportunity they gained from that scrum. The cheapshot on Blake was a joke too and i like how Hatcher was pushing at Sundin lol...give me a break.

The power play killed the leafs again in this game...too many opportunities missed with the man advantage.
Colcavico (sp?) was playing well upon his return and gets hurt again. Damn can this get ever get a break...what a ton of back luck he has had.
White and Stralman looked weak on D....aside from Gil, Kubina and Kaberle the Leafs look weak on the back end...I hope Fergie makes a move for a D man. Geezz im sure most leafs fans would take McCabe back in a heartbeat, i know i would....he is sorely missed on the powerplay too.
Glad to hear Toskola is back on skates.

Yup, the Leafs actually deserved a better fate tonight. They outshot the Flyers by a 2-1 margin, but you're right about the special teams and the weak D are killing them. Funny you mentioned White...I think I noticed him taking dumb penalties and being weak on the puck tonight as well. It's almost painful to watch Leafs games these days because they are actually trying, but it seems to be a wasted effort.

"""...White and Stralman looked weak on D....aside from Gil, Kubina and Kaberle the Leafs look weak on the back end..."""

Well what Maurice is doing having White and Strallman out there together is beyond me. White loses sight of the puck at the blueline trying to keep it in on the powerplay, and then Strallman acts as if it's his first ever practice session on a 2 on 1. It doesn't matter really. They've all had their share of nights wearing the goat horns. Each and every one of them.

McCabe scored on our goalie in Buffalo and then two weeks later hands a tape to tape pass to the Habs for a breakway overtime goal. Gill's probably popped at least 4 past his goalie off his skates and stick. Kubina makes more than his share of unforced errors, not to mention all his lazy, stupid penalties. Kaberle has tipped in three or four by our goalie as well. Wosnewski has all the tools but no toolbox to keep it all together. And White is actually improving but he's probably cost us 4 or 5 games so far with errors. For all the hazing some of us give McCabe, apparently Leafs are something like 3-16 without him this year. It's been a team effort thru the first half season. Very shaky defence corps. Too bad too because Toskala's been pretty impressive.

Toskala and Sundin have carried this club and Toskala's out for awhile yet maybe.

They'll need now probably in the area of 26 wins in their remaining 40 games now to get in. It's really very simple now. Stop playing pass the puck around all night when they're on the powerplay and shoot the damn thing, stop with the unforced errors and giveaways and lazy backcheck, and stop with the mindless penalties, and they may get back in a rythm again and get it going. Who knows. I don't know if Maurice doesn't work these guys hard enough or what but they're an exercise in frustration for sure so far.

Well this must be the Sunday Leaf Hockey Coffee club. Would someone please tell me why most good players they aquire fall apart when they arrive to the capital of the hockey world. For years they have aquired some decent players that just don't put the numbers up in Toronto. Every September the team looks great on paper and at this time of the season everyone is wondering what happened. Hey I'm not a Leaf fan but I think they deserve better fortune than this.
I think it's great that you all discuss the Leafs but the focus today should be on our JRS. Heart wins over skill again, I tip my hat to fellow Strafordite Craig Hartsburg and his team for a job well done. Sure makes you proud to be Canadian

Doggonnit. double post. have to think of some hockey talk now. hmmm.

Ok. So Roenicks playing a role in San Jose and Rechi's playing a role in Atlanta. Both picked up off the waiver wire for next to nothing. I thought someone told me Roenick's washed up.

There.

Happy new year to ya general. Good question. I think it's the environment. Toronto's like a country club with little to no pressure to perform nor win. 29 other clubs have to win to fill their buildings. Not in Toronto though. The fans keep filling the building willing to accept a mediocre product. This year is one of the worst examples of mediocrity at it's highest level.

What's even more of a mystery is players that seemingly can't perform in TO that go on to pretty good careers elsewhere. i'm thinking most recently of how leaf fans booed incessantly and ran Larry Murphy out of town. One of the classier players in the league thruout his career he went on to a couple of Stanley Cups for Detroit...as did Macoun and Bob Rouse if memory serves me correct.

Randy Carlyle (Norris trophy), Ricky Kehoe (multiple 50 goal scorer with the Pens), Jason Smith ( hardrock Oilers captain for a number of years), Stevie Sullivan, Trevor Johanson, Luke Richardson, Lanny MacDonald, Garry Unger, Frank Mahovlich, Timmy Horton...the list goes on and on seemingly forever. Kevin Adams in Carolina, Freddy Modin and Andreychuk both got Cups with Tampa even Jackman last year bagged himself a cup with the Ducks but apparently wasn't good enough to be on the Leafs D and on and on ad nauseum. All were good enough to play anywhere it seems but TO. I think a lot of these players breath a huge sigh of relief when they're shipped onward so they can get back to their careers without having to live inside a fishbowl.. and when hockey players are expected to win, then I guess they do because they're held accountable.

Not all Leafs have died on the vine coming here like Gartner and Murphy did and Blake appears to be presently doing. Cujo, Killer Gilmour, and Eddie the Eagle gave us admirable years of service, but yes, there's been years and years of poor results from our trades. Must be a sickness or something.

It's a mystery for sure.

But for sure, three cheers for our juniors and Hartsburg and the old Stratford area alumni. Maybe he can whisper in mark bells ear and help get him going when he comes back from surgery.
