Speaking of trade rumours...

Mats Sundin with a -2 on a non playoff team? Send that guy to the minors!!! Wow, a whole -2!

Who cares if he's been a point per game player his entire career despite never playing with legitimate linemates who compliment his skill.

"""...here are his stats..."""

Hmmm, Mcflea from ottawa stopped in again eh. lol Time for a good chuckle. Let's see now, Sundin's a year and a half older than that studwimp known as Alfie, has 230 some odd more goals, 250 some more assists, and almost 500 more points. And Mats has class to boot. He doesn't fire a puck at a pereniall all-star stanley Cup winning captain when his team starts their annual choke routine.

If Sundin retires this year, which he won't since he's in excellent physical condition and could probably go almost as long as Chelly (7-8 more years), but, if he did retire this year, he'll finish around 20th all time in goals with Lafleur, aound 30th alltime in assists and 25th all time in points with Andreychuk, Denny Savard and Lafleur, All in two or three years less than the rest of the guys mentioned. Where's brother Alf? 124th

You're a hoot goaliebinns. Like jokester said, plus minus means****unless taken within the context of the team. If there's a prize for the one poster that consistently shows he or she knows almost next to nothing about hockey, you'd take it hands down. Keep up the good work.

Collaiocovo's out 7 to 10 days.

Seriously though, Flyers got two picks plus two starters for Forsberg this time last year. Then the Flyers traded one of those picks back to nashville for two more starters. So Holmgren's set a high bar for fergy to try and come close to matching. Sundin doesn't have Forsberg's Cups but he does have better stats and better health.

Come on Sly...he's also played 450 more games than Alfie. Statiscally, on a per-game average, they are nearly identical.
There is that firing the puck at all-stars issue though
Not to mention Sundin's lack of linemates named Spezza and Heatley.
Not a Leafs fan (no kidding) and have a bullet in my cupboard for the day I turn into one but Sundin is a great player, to be sure. He's a slam dunk HOFer when he retires and the Leafs would be hard-pressed to replace his leadership. I certainly can't think of anyone currently on the team who could step into that role as formidably as Sundin has. Maybe it is time for the Leafs to trade him, but blaming their lack of success in the past 10 years on Mats Sundin is wrong.

I know that. And now so does everyone else. lol
However the fact does remain that if they both end up retiring around the same age, Sundin's legacy wold be more formidable. But Alfie's grown up a lot since he was such a knobhead his first few years in the league. i was actually startin' to like him a bit until he fired that puck at Niedermayer. That was a real captain-like play I must say.

Hey I seen a lot of Leafs since I remember and Sundin ranks right up there. He's gone about his business in perhaps a little less robust way than Gilmour, Clark, Keon or even Sit, But he's done it his way. I have no real complaints about his performance and he can't play the other players positions for them, so what are you gonna do.

Whatever happens to him if anything in the next few weeks, he's been a good Leaf. If Selanne isn't going to come back, look for the Ducks to try and bag him maybe. He'd be an almost perfect replacement for Teemu. That could be what the Ducks might need to get them over the top out west.

Leafs need to play real tough this week out west.

Sundin has a no trade clause.
So goaliebns, he is not going anywhere unless he chooses to waive that.

Sundin and GM Ferguson have denied reports taht Sundin might consider a trade if the Leafs fall out of playoff contention. Sundin INSISTS he wants to remain a Leaf. He has also been quoted as saying he took a 1 yr contract this year because he wanted to help the Leafs mgmt with the salary cap and to not provide him with an easy escape.

Bottom line Leafs mgmt wont move their BEST player if Sundin is happy in Toronto. he says he is so only time will tell i guess. Only Fergie could **** this up i suppose.

The other option i see, that could be beneficial to the Leafs is if they could and i say IF carefully, would be to shop Sundin to a cup contender get something half decent for the move, then this summer Leaf mgmt could pick Sundin back up again as a UFA.

Try harder to knock the best European captain.

Were the Wings thinking of trading Lidstrom?

"Sundin and GM Ferguson have denied reports taht Sundin might consider a trade if the Leafs fall out of playoff contention."

The Leafs Have Fallen!

When were they in Playoff contention?

Trade Sundin now because his value will never be higher and they will not win with him.

"Trade Sundin now because his value will never be higher and they will not win with him"

I think they proved in the 30 previous years that they can't win without him either

I guess the question is kaos, who do you get for him? Do you try for the instant cure or do you go with youth? Maybe a bit of both. Would Burke part with the likes of a Bobby Ryan for Sundin? Would Leaf fans accept such a trade? Burke would have to throw in more than Ryan, because of salary cap issues. Maybe try for Ryan and Schneider? Of course, I can't see Burke letting Ryan go, and I don't think Schneider for Sundin is fair value.
Not that I've heard these two names being tossed around...I'm just throwing them out there.
Obviously the most notable name on the block right now is Brad Richards, but I don't see him helping the Leafs any more than Sundin can.

"When were they in Playoff contention"

they missed the playoffs last year by 1 point...on the last day of the season.

This year they are currently 4 points out of a playoff spot...still in it.
yes time is running out, and they defintely have to stop giving away points...a win streak is needed but they mathematically are still in it this year as well.

The Leafs do not need help this year. They need help in future years. Sundin should be packaged for a combination of younger players and draft picks. They need to blow it up and rebuild. This group will not make the playoffs this year nor next year. Sundin is a valuable asset that is most valued through trade.

Personally I hope they don't trade him...the Leafs as is, are the best Laugh in sports. Lets keep the comedy rolling...er skating.

Yup agree with you on that one.

"the best laugh in sports"

Nope the Wings regular season dominance and short comings to MEDIOCORE status in the playoffs is what really is the best laugh. Pretty soon the Wings will be marketing all their presidents cup trophy wins as they cant seem to do much in the playoffs. My Canucks or Flames will knock them out early again this year.

Championships are won with good defense. The Leafs need to have a few more losing seasons so they can draft well and not trade them away. Remember these 4 names you will hear lots about this quartett in the future, Keith, Seabrook, Barker and Byfuglien . Leaf fans deserve a Stanley Cup they are by far, as a group the best fans in the the hockey world. Yikes.... that was hard to write but its true

no not last year but the Ducks have booted them out in the first round recently.

Sharks too if i recall.

Kaos, regular season superiority does not guarantee the Cup. Just ask the Detroit Red Wings about that.

Pucky tell me a team that hasn't gone out in the first round.

The Wings playoff record over the last 5 years is in the top 4 of the confrence.
Last years run to the confrence final proved that they are a playoff ready team.
Wont it be fun watching the All Star game as 3 Wings start the game?

You actually watch the All-Star game?

"Fun" is not a word I would associated with wathcing an NHL All-Star Game. I think there's a paint-drying competition going on at the same time on NBC. It'll be a tough choice

"the Wings playoff record over the last 5 years is in the top 4 of the conference"

as already outlayed for you previoulsy, here again is the Wings playoff record the last 5 years.
As you can see below 3 out of 4 excluding the lockout year, were early round exits.
My point is the Wings win all these divisions....on pace again this year but that CLEARLY does not guarnatee them the cup come the REAL season.

2002-03...1st round loss to the Ducks
2003-94...2nd round loss to the Flames
2004-05...Nhl lockout
2006-07...1st round loss to the Oilers
2006-07...conference finals loss to the Ducks

hey Kaos, i never said the Wings were not a good team...What im saying is there great in the regular season but often bow out early in the playoffs. The past 5 years other than last year speaks for itself.

"Wont it be fun watching the All Star game as 3 Wings star the game"

The Calgary Flames have Ignila and Phaneuf as starters.

Like Praire_pundit i find the all star game boring.

The reserves have not been announced yet so you can bet while other teams wont have 3 starters, there will be other teams with 3 plus players. Even the Leafs will have atleast Sundin and Kaberle in the lineup.

sad thing is that paint drying competitions probably draw better ratings than hockey in the US.. i think last year some darts championship or something ridiculous like that had more viewers in the US than some big hockey game

Osgood gets himself a 3 year extension at almost twice what he makes now. Good business decision by the Red Wings. 50 wins in his last two and a half years, more wins this year than the Leafs, leads the league in GA and tied for save percentage, and all for the low low price of 800K. That's got to be one of the best bargains of the year.

In the inch buy inch it's a cinch department; Brucey Boudreau 6 weeeks and 23 games later, has the Caps out of the cellar and now tied for 12th trying to get back into this thing. Never thought of it till the guy interviewed Joel Quenneville tonight to congratulate him on his 800th game coaching to go along with his 800+ plus games playing. Him and Boudreau were on those Sittler teams back in the 70's.

I can't remember what decade I last watched the all star game. I think it was in the early 80's one night with Gretzky playing.

yup, especially with that old fart Hasek approaching quit time soon.
800K for Osgood is a steal. Wish we had Holland as the Leafs GM. I look forward to hearing him speak again in our local hometown this summer.

Congradulations to Riverside Ontario product Joel Quennville I remember him in high school back when he was staring for the hometown Windsor Spitfires.

Milbury said it right on TSN last night, the Leafs need fundamental changes at the top.

As for the old fart Hasek he just pitched back to back shutouts...Leafs should be so lucky. Oh but they did get a shutout last night!

They lost 5-0 last night. Yup they are going far with Sundin. Look what Philly has done after trading Forsberg.

"As for the old fart Hasek he just pitched back to back shutouts"

ya he played a small part in that....the BIGGER part of those shoutouts is a reflection of the team. Good defence with the likes of Rafalski and Lidstrom and good defensive forwards too.

"Yup they are going far with Sundin"

yup they did have some playoff success with him...the leafs knocked the Sens out of the playoffs at least 3 times that i can remember.
like i send...Sundin SHOULD be traded if leaf mgmt could get a couple high draft picks and a GOOD trade. If not why trade your best forward? No one comes close to Sundin in goals, assists, points or plus minus.

Sundin as previously mentioned also has a NO trade clause...Even if Fergie wanted to trade him now, he couldnt unless Mats agreed to waive it. Mats just yesterday stated again he wants to remain a LEAF.
Do you get it? appently not.

ya...some think getting rid of their best scorer this year and for the last decade is the answer to the Leafs problems. Ummm sorry not likely.
The Leafs problems start with upper management and a board of Directors , also not hiring the right GM after Quinn.

Luongo is going to miss the all star game...for an already dull game, me not gettting to see my fav players sucks even more. Apparently he is flying back to Florida to spend time with his pregnant wife.

Latest news out of B.C...is Glen Murray is being pursued by the Canucks. Should be a good move for them if it develops. They could use some secondary scoring behind the Sedins.
Naslund is so lame lately...after his 7 goals in 7 games he has been a disappointment once again with only 14 goals to date...So G. Murry would be a huge plus for Vancouver in their playoff drive.

Ovechkin gets a 13 year contract extension.

WOW...never heard of that ...in hockey at least. He is singed thru the 2020-21 season.
Dipietro's 10 yr contract was surprising.
Seems more GM's are wanting to lock in their good players longer then ever before.

Can you imagine what Crosby could get..I wouldnt be surprised to see him sign for 15 years.
