| Hockey anyone? Posted: 2/11/2008 2:04:58 PM | Pretty scary injury to Zednik! I was out yesterday and didn't catch any of the sports highlights until now. I happened to be reading the stories on CNN.com and it was one of the lead stories. Wow! Reminds me of the goaltender (I think it was Malarchuk) who got his neck slashed open with a skate and almost bled to death on the ice. Just scary!
What do you guys think of the trade that Ottawa made today for Commodore and Stillman? They gave up Corvo and Eaves in exchange. Pretty big trade, but I'm undecided as to who came out ahead.

ottawa wins right now.commodore is just as good of a defenceman as corvo, although not in the offence.eaves is going to be an excellent 3rd 2nd line winger in the n.h.l.stillman helps now,and ottawa has the team to win now.is commodore a free agent at the end of the year?

Thats right the last time something like this happened on NHL ice was in March 1989 when then Buffalo Sabres Goaltender Clint Malarchuk got a skate that severed his jugular artery and luckily he survived due to fast action by the medical team and he was back on the ice 10 days later!!.
This was, when I heard it on the news, I just was really shocked that it happened, but if you think about it, it's really amazing that this kind of stuff doesn't happen more offen, because guys don't wear neck protectors. It was almost 19 years since this sort of thing last happened on NHL ice, and again we are lucky it didn't happen more offen, but then risk IS there.
I think after this incident, they MUST have hockey players to have some sort of neck protectors because when this does happen, there is just too much at stake, and it is very terryfying for anyone and the rick is real.

| Hockey anyone? Posted: 2/11/2008 3:59:32 PM | | Very true. I just watched the 10 minute clip on youtube and I am surprised by how such a simple play, that we've seen many times before, resulted in nearly fatal consequences. You're right, I'm just surprised we haven't seen this injury happen more often. Anyway, I was quited impressed with the response of both teams and of the fans in Buffalo. They looked genuinely concerned throughout the waiting period when they were still deciding whether to cancel the rest of the game or not (this went on for quite some time) and then gave a rousing standing ovation when they announced that Zednick had been stabilized and was on his way to the hospital. | |

| Hockey anyone? Posted: 2/11/2008 5:09:28 PM | Great trade for the present for Ottawa. Stillman has 2 Cup rings (TB and Carolina) and Commodore has one (Carolina) so they are getting huge playoff experience (WINNING playoff experience). But they do lose the future. Stillman will command at least twice his $1.7M salary come July 1 (probably more) and Commodore is a UFA this summer as well, whereas Corvo has two more seasons to go on his contract. I doubt Stillman will remain with Ottawa after July 1, but it's a great trade for this playoff run. This shoud start the domino effect. | |

This shoud start the domino effect. I can't wait! I've been waiting for someone to pull the trigger and start the ball rolling. It will be interesting to see what the main contenders do in response.
|
| Hockey anyone? Posted: 2/11/2008 7:01:03 PM | """...I was quited impressed with the response of both teams and of the fans in Buffalo. ..""" Completely different reaction from the peasants in Montreal last week when Colliocovo ran his own head into the boards and looked like he might have picked up a concussion. They booed from the time he scraped himself up off the ice all the way to the bench. Peasants. Thumbs up to the Buffalonians. Good sports fans. Zednik's lucky to be alive. That blood was just a gushing out of his neck.
So Ottawa finally gets some Stanley Cups in their dressing room! Good deal right now for Ottawa. Commodore impressed the heck out of me the year the Flames went to the finals. Stillmans been quite cool lately, so maybe the change will help, but he could have one of those nagging shoulder things this year. I thought Corvo was a pretty good defenceman, but, Redden wouldn't waive so Murray had to pull the switch to plan B. Commodore gives Ottawa more nuts back on the blueline, and that was missing last year against the Ducks with Getzlaff and Perry flying around the Ottawa net at will. Commodore's a good stay at home type that crunches bodies and protects his net.
Murray's not done dealing yet. Doubt he really wanted to give Corvo up, but he needed scoring depth up front, and like was mentioned, he gets two Cups from Stillman as a bonus, and that can be a very valuable intangible both on the ice and in the dressing room. Sens have to go for all the marbles this year. Their fans have been itching for that team to take it to the top for a good while now, going on ten years really, and after last year's run, it's only natural for their fans to expect them to take that last step. You can only keep it all together for so long. Me personally i don't see them as Stanley Cup stuff just yet, but we'll see what else Mr. Murray has up his sleeve.
Wouldn't surprise me to see Foligno, Robitaille, Vermette, Kelley and or Emery still to be shopped. Apart from the pizza line, that team still needs some scoring and maybe one more real good defenceman of the gritty type like Commodore and even Stillman to an extent.
Their faith in Meszaros may prove to be misplaced if they think he's gonna quarterback the powerplay. He's got a great shot from the point but brains of cement when it comes to actually playing defence. Still young in the head. Being forced to keep Redden may turn out to be a blessing in disguise for Sens fans.
|
| Hockey anyone? Posted: 2/11/2008 7:16:35 PM | I'm sure the Sens have been shopping Emery for the past 3 months. No takers. Understandable. The Sens may have to figure out a way to deal with that cancer from within and if they don't get rid of him by the deadline, the distraction may be too much to overcome at playoff time. | |
|
| Hockey anyone? Posted: 2/11/2008 9:32:02 PM | Commodore was actually tied with three other defencemen at 12 points for the team lead on defence. Corvo was 6 points back of Redden with 26, so this deal should pay immediate dividends for Carolina as well with some points from Corvo. Both Lidstrom and Rafalski have more points than the previous starting 4 Canes d-men combined.
They were saying on Saturday's game that the Red Wings have gotten something like 150+ points combined from their blueline corps so far this year. (Speakin' of the Wings, kaos if you're lurking, seems i'm in a holding pattern on my continental junket; t'nks for da wings saturday, they were great... lol)
So out west, Colorado's top three forwards - Joe Sakic, Ryan Smyth and Paul Stastny - are back on the ice practicing. Maybe Theodore can hold the fort till they get back. Jose could be comeback player of the year. i'm amazed the Avs have stayed in it without Smyth and Sakic. They made the canucks look sick Saturday night.
Re Emery. Now he's gone to the press and on air on Off the Record claiming the Ottawa cops have pulled him over for routine checks 30 times over the last two years and wants to know why they keep harassing him. I dunno what to make of this guy. I know goalies are a different breed, but this guy takes the cake for sure. Every day seems to be kinda like As the World turns with him. Maybe they are harassing him, but he sure comes across as a bit of a malcontent. I'm not too sure I'd want him on my club. There's better goalies around with a lot less hassle involved. Sens still have 5 and a half mill of cap room they can play with if they can swing a deal for another goalie and just buy this guy out or something if Murray gets too fed up with all the antics.

| Hockey anyone? Posted: 2/13/2008 7:29:21 AM | | kudos to carolina for getting such return for 2 ufas.the only thing that i am worried about with ottawa is goaltending.it looks like they are going to have to run wirh gerber, not much out there otherwise. | |
|
| Hockey anyone? Posted: 2/13/2008 9:34:49 AM | "Jose could be comeback player of the year. " Alexi Kovalev would give him a run for his money on any such award. While there isn't an official "comeback player" award, there is the Bill Masterton Award for perseverence. That's as close as the NHL comes and I'm pretty sure they've already engraved Fernando Pisani’s name on that (Masterton) trophy for this season. | |

| Hockey anyone? Posted: 2/13/2008 12:05:29 PM | | im thinking coach of the year goes to lindy ruff.take any other teams top 2 centres from last year away and see if they make the playoffs. | |

| Hockey anyone? Posted: 2/14/2008 8:49:50 PM | Tough loss for the Canes tonight. Rod the bod Brindamour out 4 to 6 months with a torn acl. Pretty hard to replace that guy.
It's official. Leafs have made it safely to the bottom of the East. 20 one goal losses to lead the league.
|
| Hockey anyone? Posted: 2/14/2008 11:14:14 PM | | Yup, the Canes just lost their heart and soul. Hmmm...don't see them doing too well now. | |

| Hockey anyone? Posted: 2/16/2008 10:28:09 AM | 5 straight loses for the Detroit Red Wings.
early exit in the playoffs coming.
|
| Hockey anyone? Posted: 2/16/2008 11:22:03 AM | """i just hope that brindy can play again.hes gettin up there to be taking that kind of injury...""" That's what I was wondering myself. if he's out 6 months, he'll turn 38 in August and would be going into his 18th season, which is starting to get up there. One thing about Brindamour though, is he's probably the most physically fit and well conditioned player in the NHL and has been for several years. The guy does nothing but work out. He works out so much that a regular hockey game is just part of his daily workout regimen. He'll be back. Anybody else though, I'd have my doubts. ---------
Yep Wings age maybe starting to show here as they now haven't won a game in a week and half. Never mind the overabundance of Europeans on that club, Chelios apparently filed for old age security this week after Hasek showed him how to fill out the forms. We'll see Chelly patrolling the blueline in a wheelchair soon waving his stick in the air to lidstrom, here, pass it here. Was he drafted before the 67 expansion, or just after? I can't remember it's been so long. He was playing since before some of the guys on his club were even thoughts, let alone seed in the fathers.. lol
Watch for Dallas to slowly reel them in for first overall.
Coach of the year candidates for me right now would have to also be Lindy Ruff, Bruce Boudreau, Gretzky (if they continue their late season surges), and maybe even Guy Carbonneau. I picked the sabres to tank right out this year, and it looked like they were going to about 3 weeks ago, but Ruff may have turned the ship around.

| Hockey anyone? Posted: 2/16/2008 11:42:43 AM | Hmmm...the Wings have been as absent as Kaos from these forums lately
Anyway, I was sitting with a Wings fan yesterday and we were watching the Wings game and then we also stayed for the Flames game. He was so choked that he was cheering on every Columbus goal and hoping for more. I guess he was hoping that they would be so humiliated by a crushing defeat that they might wake up for the next game. It was quited evident that the team didn't show up...they were clearly getting beaten to every puck, the Jackets forwards were skating through 3 players untouched, and the Wings didn't counter with anything that involved work or risk....even their passes and positioning - usually something they're very good at - was completely off! I told this diehard Wings fan that this is the curse of the Wings team...the fact that they completely dominate early in the season and then coast during the most important part. This obviously carries through into the postseason, where they get stunned by teams that fought and clawed their way down the stretch and into the playoffs.
|
| Hockey anyone? Posted: 2/16/2008 12:54:30 PM | Well i mean it's not really rocket science. Their starting 3 defencemen Rafaski, Chelios and Lidstrom average 40 years of age combined. Their goalies, Ozzy and Hasek are averaged 39, and then you have the likes of old warhorses Maltby, Dallas Drake, Draper, Holmstrom actually averaging almost 39 years old. that's 10 of your starting 20 man roster, so that club must be getting pretty slow to watch this time of year. I mean I know i said you need the greybeards to bring you home, but this is a wee bit overboard.
They looked slow enough last saturday for the Leafs to beat 'em. Wings played a pretty good game, and showed some flashes of that early season brilliance, but it looks like they aren't as sharp finishing off plays like they did earlier in the season and they go long stretches where they really don't seem to do much of anything at all.
Wings will have to start looking at blowing this club up.
The real old-school Red Wings fan is far too sophisticated in his/her knowledge of the game and this is why they no longer sell-out at will in what was once referred to as Hockeytown. They've already announced price cuts in their playoff tickets because the fans aren't stupid. They're not going to get excited about a team that right now, probably any one of the lower teams wouldn't mind hooking up with early on instead of Dallas, or Anaheim. They know already they need to maximize the gate receipts as quick as possible in case golf season comes early. The fans know once the sledding starts getting tough after the All star break, this club no longer dominates the tough games anymore since Shanny and Stevey Y and Darren McCarty left town. Those are the guys that led them to their Cups.
They just don't have it anymore. I mean they still put out a good product, don't get me wrong, but, it's just not there anymore to make it to the top of the mountain. Must have been a fair number of tails between the legs ater first dropping one to the Kings, and then on Hockey Day In Canada, losing to the lowly Leafs after blowing a late third period lead. That's a page right out of the leaf playbook. They must have been a little embarrassed by that, but then they turned around and dropped three more, including letting the Ducks win on their ice for the first time in the regular season in something like 6 or 8 years.
Parts of the roster lack heart and grit and determination, and the parts of the roster that do have these qualities, appear to have pretty much shot their bolt here 3/4ths of the way to the finish line. Like watching a horse break up on the back stretch...they should still finish in the money, but it looks like a tough 20 games coming home for them.
They're fun to watch in the first half of the season before teams get their systems in place and start hitting a stride. But when all the teams start making their push to the finish line, you start to see who has gas left in the tank, and unfortunately it doesn't seem like the Wings have what it takes this year.
I like San Jose in the west if they still do a little bit of tweaking to their lineup, but it really all depends there on whether we continue to see this amazing season by Nabakov who has now played in 56 of their 57 games.
