"""...playoffs are a totally different season!!!! I see the games are getting a lot more chippy.... you can tell its getting close to the playoffs..."""
Absolutely. i mentioned that somewhere else that the West has kicked it up another couple of notches the last couple of weeks in intensity level. Very hi-level hockey going on out there right now. I am so sick of watching eastern clubs play eastern clubs every night. Feck, I wish those schedule-makers would balance this schedule out. Watching to see if any of the paint fades in my office for three hours is more exciting than watching most Leaf-Bruin matches as an example. I don't know what it is but it just seems the majority of the game is played between the bluelines with all kinds of broken plays and dump ins and dump outs and dump it back in again and dump it back out again. zzzzzzzzz. Wake me up when there's a goal.

Hockey just seems to be more like old time hockey when I watch these western clubs square off. They don't give an inch out there. Phaneuf kicked his game up a notch last night as well against Phoenix. Now that one looked like another hi-intensity game. There has to be a way for us to be able to see the Wings, Hawks, Blues, Avs, Stars way more than we get now. I don't care if my team gets smoked by the western clubs. I like to see hitting and good old fashioned body crunching and it seems almost a lost aspect of the game in the east.

Mind you Volchenkov laid out a couple of pretty good ones last nights on Flyer forwards coming over the blueline. They caught the A-train at the blueline but good. Sens escaped with a shootout win to snap their 3 game losing streak, but it's a 4 way fight for first overall in the east. The east is anybody's right now, but I'm leaning toward the Devils until we see what kind of deals are pulled here before the deadline.

I apologize for posting being that I am supposed to stay out till Sat however I have seen no mention of the tragedy that happened 2 days ago in my hometown of Windsor Ontario. I will stay out one extra day.

Mickey Renaud captain of the Windsor Spitfires and a 5th round draft pick of the Calgary Flames collapsed suddenly and passed away just befroe heading to a Family Day skate.

Although I did not now Mickey I knew his uncle and father who both played professinal hockey. His father coached me in baseball one summer when I was about 15. His father Marc played several seasons in the NHL with Hartford and Buffalo. His uncle Chris played in the Chicago organization.

Mickey was a beloved captain of the Spits and a terrific role modle in the community. Check him out on You Tube.

God bless Mickey Renaud.

^ Definitely sad to see a young man get cut down at such a tender age. I believe he was a Flames prospect...not too sure. Seems like it is much more common in the last few years. A real tragedy for this young man and his loved ones.

Spitfire's have cancelled their next game, and probably the one after that as well, while the team tries to come to grips with the loss of their captain. He sounded like he was a real good kid. Life can be short. Too short sometimes. Sad story. The whole OHL is pretty rocked over this. They'll have a nice rink waiting for him to play on up in heaven..
---------------------------
Looks like Lidstrom's out three weeks. He'll have some company though as the Red Wings put Hasek and his hip and Rafalski and his groin on IR.

Simon Gagne in Philly told to pack it in for the rest of the season. And after Flyers picked up Modry yesterday they handed Jimmy Vandermeer over to the Flamers for a third round pick in 09. Should help the flames with depth. Flyers just got the guy about 8 weeks ago from Chicago, but apparently Modry gives them the depth they think they need. This could be just a prelude to another Flyer deal.

The Modry deal was done because Kaberle refuesd to waive again in light of Leafs getting potential first line centre, 23 year old Jeff Carter from Philly. Wonder why everyone's ragging on Sundin to waive when Kaberle, Mccabe and Tucker are all doing the same thing....

I think the popular opinion is that Sundin could be re-signed in the off-season.

Nice to see Cujo get that win tonight. Ties him with Sawchuck for 5th.

Thing is on Sundin, Fletcher with all his years of being around the game, still probably doesn't know whether he's coming or going with this hockey club. He's not going to do anything until Tuesday morning. Leafs have 3 games between then and now and could possibly win all three. Buffalo, Atlanta and the Sens. Then where are they. A couple of points out with about 18 games to play. I mean if it was baseball they're about 5 games out right now with 21 to play. Bluejays were like 6 games up on the Tigers with something like ten to play in 87 i think it was, and tigers pulled it out.

Leafs tanked a one goal game a week ago to the sabres and then the islanders. We could have passed the Isles that nite in the standings. Instead the isles have won 5 in a row and are one point out of a playoff spot.

Leafs beat the Bruins, the Habs, the Senators and the Red Wings so far this month. This team has looked on some nights to be pretty darn good. This Dominick Moore has been a good little quiet acquisition to help bring some solid play up the middle. The overall offence must be down across the roster by maybe 50 goals all told from pre-seasons expectations, so really, there could still be some offense to come yet here in the 4th Q. Only Antropov, Devereaux and Sundin have better numbers over last year, and all of them just marginally. You would think that players like Blake, Tucker, Pony, Stajan, Wellwood, Steen should still be young enough to be putting up good numbers. Doug Wilson of the Sharks was saying that sometimes it's not necessarily a matter of getting more or better players. Sometimes it's just getting the most out of the players you've got...which sounds like a guy that played under Mike Keenan. lol

Nobody seems to want to step right up yet for the last few playoff spots in the East and it may take only 8 or 9 games over .500 instead of at least 10, to bag that last spot. A team 2 games under heading into the 4th quarter would have to go something like 16-5. If that's impossible i dunno. But that old silver fox probably has contingency plans in place to improve the hockey club here depending on the next three games, and his possible inability to get any of these fab 5 to waive.

If they're not gonna waive you might as well see what you can do to make the finish interesting. I'm glad they moved the trade deadline up be two or three weks or whatever it was. GM's need to have nerves of steel right about now. Bad week to try to give up sniffing glue.

Hey Sly you might have to pass me some of that glue the Red wings have a big west coast Canadian trip starting on Friday!! The wings are pretty banged up right now ! Will see if the younger players can step it up a notch on this trip There was some talk that Darren Macarty might be resigned if he can still keep up and drop some weight!! He had a hat trick the other night with Grand Rapids!! He was always a fan favorite in Detroit just ask Claude Lemuiex not saying that will be a block buster signing but it should throw some fans in the seats!!

Trade Sundin, get some prospects and re-sign him in the summer. If he truly cares about the organization, he'll ask to be traded so they can help rebuild and he can lead them next season.

^^^ya that was the plan with Smyth in Edmonton and that blew up in Edmonton's face.
Now at least half of the Oil fan base is pissed.

There's no guarantee, Sundin wouldnt sign with a new club if he were traded...i know i would.
Bottom line, He (Sundin has said) wants to stay as a Leaf so i'd be surprised to see him waive his no trade clause.

I say Trade Tucker and Pony up front along with Kubina and or Gil in the back end.
Raycroft should be traded too...There no need for him with Toskala signed and Poggee waiting in the wings with the Marlies.

If leaf fans truly cared about their hockey club, they'd listen to their captain and STFU about him waiving.

Leafs could have had Marleau and a draft pick for Kaberle, and Cliffy had also picked the Flyers pocket two days ago with a first round pick plus Jeff Carter for Kaberle, but Kaberle refused to waive on both deals. Flyers only had to give up a third round pick to get Modry the next day from the Kings.

Burke is offering the 09 pick they got for Penner from the Oilers plus Bobby Ryan for Sundin. Now that is kinda tempting. Ryan as most of you know, went second behind Sid the Kid in 05.

I can't picture Oiler fans sitting around this time last year saying let's trade Ryan Smyth to rebuild the hockey club and then sign him back again in the summer. Sacrilige.

In 1990, coach at the time, Jacques Demers suggested the same thing about Steve Yzerman of the Red Wings. Demers was promptly given his pink slip less than 2 years after being named coach of the year.

Maybe if the leaf fans started booing Kaberle, Kubina, Mccabe and Tucker every time they touched the puck in their next two home games starting tonight against the Sabres, some of these guys might start getting the message and waive. I can't see why they wouldn't be booing these four guys anyway with the seasons they've given us this year.

I wouldn't decide firmly to be a seller until Tuesday morning pending the outcome of these next three games. I don't look at that Carter for Kaberle deal as making Cliff as being a seller. More just Cliff being trader Cliff than a seller. For me i think we were getting the better end of that deal including the draft pick they were willing to throw in. We already have three dysfunctional puck-moving defencemen that have underachieved badly this year, 4 including White, so any one of the three is expendable, if not all three.

This east is so dysfunctional that any team could still bag that 8th spot. Yes, even the Leafs. Once you're in, anything can happen. Carolina, Tampa, Oilers, Flames, and the mighty Ducks of 03 have all proven this to be true the last couple of years.
------------------------------------------------------------
EDIT: Sniper: VVVV
"""...Sources say some GMs were upset Fletcher all but completed a deal Sunday night that would have sent defenceman Tomas Kaberle to the Flyers for centre Jeff Carter and a draft pick without knowing whether Kaberle would waive his no-trade clause.

Fletcher, according to sources, agreed to the trade with Flyers GM Paul Holmgren, then found out through Kaberle's agent, Rick Curran, that the 29-year-old blueliner had no intention of waiving his no-trade clause. The Flyers wound up settling on Kings defenceman Jaroslav Modry, whom they acquired for a draft pick.

"Guys don't want to do deals with (Fletcher) if it gets down to just completing the deal and then Sundin says he's not going to go anywhere," a league executive said yesterday. "I know a lot of the teams that are talking to (Fletcher) want reassurance, otherwise it's going to be a waste of time for them."

There have even been hints that Fletcher hasn't even told Sundin his plan. Fletcher said earlier in the week he wouldn't ask anyone to waive their no-trade clause until he had something tangible in place. Fletcher maintained he has "carte blanche" to do whatever he needs to improve the Leafs and plans to sit down with members of the organization today to find out what path he'll take in the next five days.

While Fletcher doesn't have anything concrete in place, he admitted he has an idea of what he can get for his players. It's believed the Ducks may have offered prospect Bobby Ryan and Edmonton's No. 1 pick in the 2009 draft for Sundin..."""

Tempting i suppose if Sundin waives. He may do it as the Ducks are a threat to repeat as Cup champions. Mats has never won a cup and this could be he last chance to do so.

what is your source for this trade offer by Burke? Curious i'd like to read this.

That's Toronto for you...if there hasn't been a rumour started by noon, start one yourself.
"sources say" ...."a league executive" ... I think this guy went to the Al Strachan School of Journalism

Bobby Ryan plus what could very easily be a lottery draft position for a guy who is unrestricted July 1? Sounds pretty steep to me. But hey, it sure would give the Ducks a boost for these playoffs.

actually Garrioch is the beat writer for the Sens up in Ottawa.

Burkey probably feels somewhat comfortable with the squad he has now now that Selanne's back in the fold. If there were truth to that story, it would probably show Burke doing this only as a counter measure to prevent Dallas or possibly Detroit or someone else in the West from getting their hands on Sundin.

Last week at one of the games at the ACC, Fletcher was spotted with the Dallas exec's heading to his office where they sat behind closed doors for the better part of two periods of the game.

Anyway, Leafs gave it up good last night. Shoddy power play and penalty killing again, and probably for the first time this year, a real bad start by Toskala. Not a good time to drop another one to the Sabres. This time 5-1. You know maurice has whined all season like a litlle baby when his club has had to play two nites in a row, but here the Sabres handed them their hats two weeks in a row under the same conditions.

I watched Flames gut one out the other night in Dallas and they got into Dallas at 4 in the morning after a rock 'em sock 'em affair with the Coyoyes the night before.

Maurice after the midday skate yesterday before the Sabres game when asked to compare this years leaf squad with last years:

http://broadband.tsn.ca/tsn/?id=349&vid=33484

Somebody get this guy some kleenex. He basically just told a room full of reporters thattheir guess is as good as his as to what's wrong with his hockey club before he stormed out speechless and getting laffed at by the Toronto press. They should have moved this guys sorry a.ss out of there back in mid-November after that debacle on a Saturday night in Phoenix.

i think you will be very surprized as to what g.ms are going to give up for u.f.as this year.the hossa trade i refered to earlier wont be far off.if a g.m thinks that player is a piece that can put them over the top, they will do it.

Brian Burke:
"""...The Ducks received Edmonton's first, second, and third-round draft pick in 2008 as compensation(for Penner). The first-rounder could be a high one depending on how the Oilers finish out the season. "I've been asked repeatedly over the last couple of days, is the Edmonton pick in play, and the answer is yes," said Burke.

He likely won't deal it for a rental player - a player slated for unrestricted free agency at season's end.

"We think there's seven players in this draft and then there's a drop-off," said Burke. "If it looks like it's going to be a top-seven pick, then it's not going for a rental. It could go in a hockey deal, but it's not going for a rental."

That pick sets the Ducks apart from other contenders because it's higher than the first-round picks those teams would naturally hold. "If Boston was offering its first-round pick right now, where would that be, 16th or 17th?" Burke said. "Whereas the Edmonton pick . and again, I'm not putting up bulletin-board material for the Edmonton Oilers, they've managed to win some games, they're playing well despite some real serious injuries and God bless them. But that pick could be a considerably higher pick than 16th or 17th or 18th."

"And that's where I think we have an edge if we're willing to deal that pick for a rental - but if it's high enough I'm not dealing it for a rental."""

http://www.tsn.ca/nhl/teams/news_story/?ID=229580&hubname=nhl-ducks
-------------------
It's believed to be Detroit, Anaheim, Dallas, Vancity, Mtl and Ottawa that are in the Sundin sweepstakes. Doug Weight is still out expected to be till mid to late March with his shoulder injury and he's only counted 9 points in his games with the Ducks, so maybe Burke is serious about acquiring Sundin. It could be just a ruse though to force the other teams in the West to pay a kings ransom for Mats.

Fletcher is to meet with Mats today to discuss a possible shortlist of teams. Mats looked pretty depressed on the bench last nite when the Sabres popped in the empty netter to make it 5-1. But his head was held high while the rest of the laffs cowered along the bench with their heads held low. Leafs went offside about ten minutes earlier with a clear cut 3 on 1. Man, some nights they look like house-league midgets out there. How the feck do NHL'ers go offside on a 3 on 1 coming over from centre ice?

I would think for Mats's sanity alone he should waive. The knives will come out in Toronto if he doesn't. The fans will boo him incessantly thinking he was selfish not to waive, and, couple that with their lousy play (they were showered with boos heading off after two periods last night) it's just not a healthy situation for him to be in to close out the season. I would get out of dodge now if i were him. And don't bother looking back. Sign an extension with whoever picks him up here. Leafs haven't had any heart all year (3 years actually), and last night's effort should speak volumes to Mats.

He'll be in a different uni this time next week. You heard it here.lol.
