Wouldn't matter that much to me personally as a leaf fan. I guess thinking back on it, it would be the first time in about 35 years i could possibly find a reason to watch/ or even, half cheer for the Habs. That was back when they wrestled the Cup back from the Broad Street Bullies. Only team more hated possibly by the Leafs than the Habs could be the Flyers for the way they went about winning two Cups in the 70's.

Habs are a fun team to watch. Carbonneaus got everyone pulling in the same direction and they're quite relentless in their efforts. they play a lot like Carbonneau and Gainey did. Just a bunch of hardworking grunts, real solid with the fundamentals. I had a feeling Gainey would eventually get that club turned around once he showed up there. Look at the job he did with the NorthStars/ Stars organization. I wouldn't care that much if Sundin was on the club. Maybe other Leaf fans couldn't take it but it wouldn't bother me. If the Habs go all the way, more power to them.

But till then, you're still the Habs...

Sly....... just to clarify a point here, I am in no way a habs fan, but i am not a leafs fan either lol. I am a BRUINS fan. And now let the tormenting begin LMFAO. I was just wondering what the general feeling of leaf fans would be IF it were to happen. I remember when gilmour signed with the habs, every leaf fan I know died a little inside that day i think LOL.

It doesn't matter to me where they end up. It hurts to watch them go. Gilmour was a bummer for sure, but the first time he left was to the Devils. That's the one that stung. By the time he got to the Habs he had become a bit more of a legend around the league rallying the Sabres into the playoffs one year. So, a couple of years after you've finally come to terms with the fact he's gone, then you become kind of happy for him where ever he wound up. I did anyway. But i do know a lot of female friends never cheered for, or even bother ever watching, the Leafs again after Killer left town.

Sittler's was the worst for me. That was just brutal seeing him in a Flyers uni for the national anthem. Hockey was different that day. Especially after all the battles he'd led us against Philly.

The first time i saw it with the Leafs was what Ballard was doing to Davey Keon shoo shooing him off so he hated the leaf franchise forever. And when Wendel went, you lost a bit of your heart for the Leafs that day. Maybe I've been thru too many of these to care that much anymore. You get used to them being just livestock with the Leafs. Maybe that's why it's called hogtown.

Apparently Sundin's taking it pretty hard that Cliff asked him to waive on behalf of the Leaf organization.. I'm sure he'll end up waiving. He probably realizes he can't stay as a Leaf in order to please leaf fans and that's probably really screwing with his mind right now.. Thinking that he's gonna get booed by leaf fans for what would probably be then, his last 5 weeks as a Leaf at that point. He'll wake up and realize that in the end, players are just horses to run the courses ...There's no joy in Mudville, and there's no loyalty in Leafland.

Keon, Sittler, Wendel, Vaive, Gilmour. Sundin just joins a long line of Leaf captains that were treated like sh1t in the end. So no. It doesn't bother me anymore where they go. I hope they win the Cup where ever they wind up.

"I cannot leave my teammates and join another NHL club at this time."

Mats Sundin ~ Feb 24, 2008
http://www.tsn.ca/nhl/news_story/?ID=230511&hubname=nhl

I'm sure he's not going to be getting a lot of atta boys for this one around Leaf nation. But from me, atta boy Mats. You da man baby. Now lets get back to some hockey and put a push on for that last playoff spot.
------------------------
Meanwhile, I gotta tip my hat to Lou Lamorello and those New Jersey Devils. Every year he loses guys to the big dollars, and every year attendance is the pits in the meadowlands, but every year he ices a good and above average product. 62 games in and we have a new leader atop the east. So much for a record setting (13-1) start to a season by our buddies up the 401 in Sensland. Devils started slow (6-8) but they're rolling now. Watch for marty to come out of the east in pursuit of the devils 4th Cup.

time to let it go man. no way the leafs are going to even fight for a playoff spot. do you really think they are going to be able to pass 6 teams to grab that 8th seed? only 19 games to do it in. so if the sabers go .500 put them at 88 points making the leafs need 27 out of 38 points. so to tie with the sabers if the sabers go .500 the leafs need 13 wins and take one game to ot. so in other words the leafs must not lose more then 5 games or its done. pretty much same thing to cacth philly or islanders.

its over man, go out with some class. enjoy wacthing it for just wacthing it.

One happy Bruins fan here!!

OK, I have to ask a question. SUNDIN, KABERLE,KUBINA & TUCKER all have said they are not going to waive there no trade causes. So my question is this. Are they completly INSANE? I mean give me a break, why NOT get out of town when the gettings good? Especially SUNDIN, he could have walked out of town even a bigger hero to leaf fans than he is now. Now all he is has to look forward to is a week or so of "oh, but he is so loyal" cheering, then the rest of the time he's gonna be looked at as the reason they miss the playoffs and Booed constantly. I hope he retires, or at least signs with an organition that has half a clue as to run a team.

Leafs should come out with a serious pump on in Ottawa Monday nite from Sundin's announcement today. Reaction is about 50 /50 on the sports blogs, but the one's that wanted him to waive are a seriously bitter bunch. lol. Hey, the captain goes down with the ship. And that's just the way it is. The guy is genuine. Lots of non-leaf fans talking on the blogs about new found respect for Sundin.

You watch that team play some hockey now.

Regier's gonna have a tough time signing Campbell in Buffalo and he knows it. With players like Rob Blake, Kaberle and Mccabe off the trading wire there's going to be an awful lot of nice offers being dangled in front of him for Campbell. They have two other UFA's to sign in Numminen and Khalinen, and then 5 more of their top players to sign next year including Millertime, Afinogenov, and Connoly. Regiers got one tough decision to make here because this team could go in the tank if he moves Campbell. Those two losses last week to the Sabres seriously dampened already feint hopes for the Leafs. But the Sabres just finished a stretch 3 weeks ago where they won 2 of 14, so they aren't exactly rock solid just yet.

Flyers now winless in 10 so they don't look like they're going anywhere too quick. Islanders have 6 regulars now on IR so they'll start facing the music soon enough them.

I figured Leafs could only afford maybe 3, possibly 4, lossses in their last 19. But we should be able to hitchhike off this emotional announcement by Mats for 6 points this week to close out February. So we'll see where we are then. If this announcement doesn't jolt this squad into action, then I don't know what would. Nobody saw the Colorado Rockies win 20 of 21 last september and October either, but they did. Wonder what the odds were in Vegas in early september that the Rockies would be in the World Series in October.

Used to work with people for almost twenty years that used to yell and scream: "Don't keep telling me why we can't do it. Just get it done." So we did.

You can't think about the 6 teams in between. That's too much to worry about, and there's nothing in your power to control the outcomes of their games, so you can't waste energy thinking about that.. Focus on number 8. That's all. You just have to keep chasing the 8th spot is all. Do that and the 6 teams in between no longer become a factor. I'm not saying the Leafs will do it, but, in theory, any team could do it. It ain't over till the fat lady sings. Mind you, i won't be putting money on it just yet. But any team can do it.

Kudos on the Flames climb into the drivers seat today in the NorthWest. Leafs need to be playing like the Flames right now. Get big Hal Gill and Kubina start rocking some bodies the way Phaneuf does.

I'm a Detroit Red Wings fan since I'm from the midwest. But I live in Phoenix and do attent Coyotes games occasionally. I was at game on Friday night when the yotes played the Colorado Avalanche. I have to say it was one of the most dramatic games I ever seen! Late in the third period the Coyotes were down 2-1 with thier goalie pulled. Derek Morris managed to score the game tying goal with only 3 seconds left in regulation. I got up out of my seat and yelled out the word GOOAALLL!!! so loud I nearly lost my voice. The Coyotes lost the game in a shootout which lasted 12 rounds but it was still a very fun game to watch.

I'm on the fence with the whole Sundin thing.
On the one hand, it's extremely refreshing to see a captain so loyal to his teammates.

On the other hand, isn't he hurting the club he so loves, in the long run? A cynic could take the stance that he is saying to the club "screw you, I'm not a piece of meat to be sold to the highest bidder." Or "screw you, all these yesrs you could have built a team around me and made us a bona fide threat... now you want to build one with the pieces you get for trading me? Ain't gonna happen."

Hard to believe that anyone has this much devotion to teammates in today's sports world. Apparently Sundin does. Good on him.

At least he is using the "no trade clause" properly. I have more respect for a player who uses the clause for what it is, as opposed to the player who will waive it "for the right club" in essense, controling his own trade.

Then again, maybe he just didn't want to play for any of the teams the Leafs were looking to deal with.

sundin has been everything a player should be for the leafs.he also has been compinsated well for it.he doesnt want to leave his family to perue a cup he feels would not satisfy him.if i were him i would do the same.i have a feeling that if he knew the leafs would sign him back in the summer he might wave.the problem with that is it detracts his value, and i dont think the leafs are interested in doing so.

Well back to real news. Sutter's happy with his clubs makeup and announces Tanguay's not going anywhere. I don't blame him. This Flames club is going to be tough little nut to crack in the playoffs. Keenan's got them hitting their stride at just the right time.

Watch for a fire sale in Tampa. Richards has agreed to waive provided he has a say in where he's going. The new owners of Tampa are meeting with the old owners right now and apparently they're not the least bit interested in coming anywhere close to meeting Boyle's demands. Prospal will go too as he's UFA this summer.

Still apparently an outside shot that McCabe would consider going to the Strangers.

Sundin will decide this summer what he wants to do. If every club in the league wanted him this weekend, you can bet the leafs and the rest of the clubs will be forming a lineup outside his door this summer. I don't think Mats will hold it against Cliffy and the leafs for asking him to waive. He knows it's all part of the business and he may be hurt a bit by it today, but he'll sluff it off. I see him coming back for another year at another reduced salary again, and again with a no-movement clause. Provided the leaf fans don't get stupid here coming down the stretch by booing the guy.

Well reports say that the AV'S have signed FORSBERG today to a 1 year deal. What do you think? Good thing he will help the team, do they have a real shot at the cup now? Or is it a mistatke because he is to injury prone and most likly just get hurt?

As long as they make the playoffs they have as good a shot as anyone of winning the Cup. Good signing for the Avs. Cost them nothing (other than cash) so they couldn't go wrong in that regard. But I can't see him lasting more than 20 games before injury ends his season. So maybe he'll help them get to the playoffs, but I don't expect him to be much help once they get there.

^^^Just one year short of the Red Wings record of 42 years of mediocrity..At least we never had a record of making the playoffs twice in 16 years. Don't forget your roots.

Tucker looking for his first hat trick of his career tonight. 5-0 pasting after 2 periods over the free falling Sens. Emery getting the bronx cheers when ever he touches the puck. Break up the leafs! Oh wait. They just tried to do that.

What in the world are these sportshows going on about trading Evgeni Malkin? Are they nuts?

Hmmm. can Forsberg and Sakic recapture the magic?

Funny stuff. I would kaos old boy, but hopefully you and i are long gone from this site before then.

Vesa pitches his second shutout of the season against those Sens. My buddies just called me from the game crying the Blues. i told them i heard Brian Murray is firing Poindexter Leatherlungs that does their national anthem every nite. Murrays hired Tom Petty to sing Free Fallin' before every game now. Slip slidin' away.

Man those Sens look like a mixed up bunch right now. Confidence has always has been an issue with this club so we'll see how they go here. They looked absolutely horrible tonight. Emery refused to come out of the dressing room to sit on the bench for the 3rd period after he was pulled at the intermission. Not a cool thing to do, but hey, it's Ray Emery so what do you expect. He sat there with 2 seconds left in the second just shaking his head at the fans while they gave him the raspberries. Not a real good scene for a team that considers itself championship material. Only the leafs fans were still in the building with 6 minutes to go.

Go Leafs Go. 6 points out with 18 to play.

Late news. Boyle signs 6 years , 40 mill with Tampa. First 4 years no trade.
Columbus offering three regulars out of their lineup for Brad Richards.

The FLYERS and TAMPA BAY have made a deal.

To the FLYERS goes V.PROSPAL. And the LIGHTNING get ALEXANDRE PICARD and a 2nd or 3rd rounder in 2009.

Helps the Flyers immediately. Prospal now with his 7th club in 10 years including his first few years with Philly and two stints with Tampa. Him and Torturella really didn't like each other. With Lupul hurt for a couple of weeks and Mike Richards hurt for the next three weeks, I sat here scratching my head wondering why Holmgren was dangling Jeff Carter all over the place. Guess he's changed his mind, or maybe this deal sets the wheels in motion for a Carter deal. he's been offering Carter to nearly everyone.

This Picard kid has tons of upside. He was the Mike Bossy award winner for Quebec junior the year before Columbus drafted him 8th overall in 05. Personally i've never seen him play.

I don't like it, but then again i hate the flyers so what can i say.

This Boyle deal is going to tighten the noose around Regier with regards to Brian Campbell. Campbell rejected their latest offer and won't counter it back to Buffalo. There's no way Buffalo has it in their budget next year to give this guy what he wants which is going to end up being close to what Boyle just got.. Buffalo offered 6 mill for 3 years, but Campbell wants a longer term. Big money for a guy who only two years ago finally got 45 points in a season for the first time in his 8 years as a pro..Late bloomer for sure.

Hossa seems to think he's going back to Ottawa but i'm thinking the Habs or the Canucks are going to get this guy. Hockey news is predicting Detroit, but i doubt he's old enough yet to play there. They just re-signed fan favorite McCarty.

anyone else here think the nhl needs a rule to not allow a team to just sign a player 63 games into the season?

why would the aves go after some offence when its there d thats bad?

hope the wings have fun with old McCarty, enless he somewhere found the fontain of youth its going to be a waste of a roster spot.

sutter started talk with langkow to extend his contract, tangs is i guess here to stay. so does that leave juice for trade bait or does sutter find a way to sign him and lanks?

Sutter's got a good club there, but he's got 20+ mill tied up in 5 defencemen. Letting Owen Nolan, Conroyd, maybe Yelle go over the summer will free up some cash, but it looks like he might still have to try and move Tanguay over the summer. A lot of his decisions will be made based upon playoff performance. Nolans playing like he's been born again, but this could be one of his last kicks at the can.

Sounds like some guys are more ticked off about the Selanne signing than the Forsberg signing, but me it's a world class league that operates 82 games. So if you can find a spare part somewhere around the world, i say let him sign up to the trade deadline. They moved the trade deadline up three weeks this year so most teams still have almost close to a quarter of a season, so some of these guys could make a difference. Which is what i think is upsetting fans of the other clubs.

Maybe do it like in baseball where you can still make deals after the deadline but you can't use those guys in the playoffs.

Leafs have the third linemate of the old Russian national junior Ovechkin, Malkin line over in Russia. For some bizarre political reason they can't get him (Kulemin) in a leaf uni even though they're paying him almost a million and ahalf to play over there. Even if they had him in a Marlies uni by tomorrow night they could bring him into the lineup late in the season. I don't have an issue with these late signings. I think it adds a bit of intrigue into a game that's really stunted these days for trades. But maybe what they should do is penalize the team retroactively to incorporate their entire years salary into the cap room and see if they can still pull the trick.

But doing that right there might have prevented Sutter from picking up Cujo.

Larry Bird did it with the Celtics, Jordan did it with the Bulls and Mario did it a couple of times with the Pens. If they were legitimately hurting there's really no reason why a guy like Forsberg shouldn't be allowed back in. The Selanne thing is kinda chintzy the way he sat around practicing all winter with no body contact but keeping his conditioning up, so in other words, he didn't want the grind of an 82 game sked, but did want the glory of the playoffs. Seems to be a popular game this year...and i think with Selanne it was a game. With Niedermayer i think it was more sincere that he just wanted to make sure he wanted to be out there. Like Messier used to say each year while he contemplated retiring. "It's not the safest place to be if you're not sure you want to be out there."

I guess if a team has cap space these days, then they were shrewd enough to save a bit of room for the guy, then they were already operating at a disadvantage to themselves as it were for the first half or three quarters of the season. I dunno. I'm Ok with it.

I have a sneaky feeling Forsberg is going to be playing right close to hi-level right from the word go. He's been out of the loop about 10 months now, but still kept working out all this time. The last time he did this, he didn't look like he'd missed a beat. Maybe Colorado still has a move to make tomorrow on defence based on their signing of Forsberg today. Colorado's almost always a player at the trade deadline so we'll see what shakes out tomorrow.

NBA has one no trade clause in the entire league and that belongs to Kobe Bryant. That's the one aspect of the game I'd like to see the NHL try to get rid of, or maybe take kind of like an NFL approach where they can 'franchise' one player and he doesn't count towards the cap, and then maybe have an option to give any 'one' other player on that team a no-trade for the one year only. Ducks could have franchised Selanne and then it's no harm no foul, but most teams would franchise their top wage earner.
