| Hockey anyone? Posted: 2/27/2008 9:00:39 AM | | A no trade clause does not allow you to move players up and down without clearing waivers, as far as I know. Losing a player through re-entry waivers is not a trade. | |

| Hockey anyone? Posted: 2/27/2008 9:04:16 AM | """...couldnt the leafs move most of there dead weight to the ahl? other then mccabe who has a nmc? as far as i know which havnt checked into it really but a ntc should still let you move your player to the ahl. only way i can think you get the dead weight off your cap..."""
I think you're right on the money there smacks. But if i'm reading it right, the Leafs have to demote these guys, or try to demote these guys, before the season ends. Doing it in the offseason won't help. What they have to watch out for is someone like opportunistic Kevin Lowe to step up and bag himself a couple of Leafs dmen here while Leafs pay half the freight. Picking up any of these guys for half price isn't a bad deal probably in most anyone's book, so there could be a lot of takers. But hey, leafs want a fresh start so they're going to have to roll the dice here one way or another.
DURING THE OFFSEASON In the offseason, the following players count: 1. All players on 1-way contracts, regardless of where (or if) they were playing the previous year...
Who doesn't count against the cap? During the season: Players assigned to the minors - even if on one-way contracts - do not count (as long as they are not on conditioning assignments or fit the condition of 50.5(d)(i)(B)(5) above) as well as players signed to a contract that are in Major Junior hockey or overseas...
But the gamble here i think is on the waiver wire before getting them to the minors:
If he is claimed, the acquiring team is only responsible for half of the player's salary and the player's former team is responsible for the other half - which counts against the team cap for the duration of the player's contract. If the player is then waived and claimed by a 3rd team, the original team and the claiming team each split the player's salary and cap figure equally.

I guess the only real option Cliff has, and it's the one you mentioned, and it's also the one i would probably take, is to just sit them out until they come to you and ask to be traded. At the end of the day I would think any hockey player would rather play hockey than sit. But no offense to anyone, this might not be the case with Kubina or Kaberle. They could just as easily sit at home in Europe and get themselves ready for the Olympics while they collect their cheques. tucker would definitely ask to be traded i would think. And i would think McCabe would as well, but you never know. If Cliff keeps making surreptitious threats to the media about these guys, they may just sit out out of spite. I dunno.
The buyout route is actually 2/3rds of the salary for the length of the contract. Originally i had read somewhere that it was half the salary.

| Hockey anyone? Posted: 2/27/2008 9:56:29 AM | ok so the leafs play them the rest of this year, then in the off season you send them down. and leave them down. dont play them much in the ahl ethier you need to develope your kids. see how long they will go before they want a trade then wait a season to trade them. only getting what they deserve.
nice thing is if any wont play for the ahl or go to europe im like 90% sure that the leafs woudnt have to pay them at all.
mind you may be worse long term when star players wont sign there in fear of this. or demand nmc's instead of ntc'c.
i still think it would be funny as hell.

| Hockey anyone? Posted: 2/27/2008 10:02:14 AM | They didn't give up a second round pick for Federov. You must have missed the part about Ted Ruth still being at least three years away from being ready for the NHL. ruth was a second rounder was he not? | |
|
| Hockey anyone? Posted: 2/27/2008 10:04:54 AM | Of all the trades, I was a little suprised by the Brian Campbell deal. There were no rumours about him being available and it doesn't seem like they really shopped him around. Would have loved to see him in an Oilers uniform.
hes a UFA .that could still happen.
|
| Hockey anyone? Posted: 2/27/2008 10:28:46 AM | """...ruth was a second rounder was he not?...""" Nice work on the backpedal. You're statement was: "federov for a second in a deep draft year is not so good" This year's draft is a deep draft. Luckily for the Caps, Federov didn't cost them a second rounder in a deep draft. Last years draft was not considered a deep draft. As a matter of fact it was considered one of the leanest drafts in well over a decade, possible even two decades by most folks that hang around the junior circuits. This years draft and next years has been looked forward to for a good many years by people in junior hockey after a couple of lean years. --------------------
smacks:"...ok so the leafs play them the rest of this year, then in the off season you send them down...""" If they're going to try and send them down, they'll have to try it with a couple of games left in this season. Otherwise they count on the cap. If they do get picked up on the waiver wire Leafs are still in for half the salary on their cap. Both choices are like being stuck between a rock and a hard place. Ferguson really stuck it to us but good. What a mess.
I do like the idea of making them all sit for a season to pay them back for putting us a season behind in rebuilding, but I think management has an obligation to the ticket buyers not to do that. Maybe if it was just one guy like a Yashin or something, fans could take it and probably be Ok with it. But 4 guys. I dunno. If they did want to go to Europe to play I believe it would relieve the Leafs of the salary.
Cliffy sent a pretty subtle message to the club yesterday anyway by shipping out our three biggest guys. He says there was no interest in any other players, but i find it a bit hard to believe that clubs would be more interested in Kilger, and Belak over guys like Steen, Tlusty, Antropov, Blake etc. Leafs are gonna have to tough it out with Tucker being the only guy that seldom backs down from the rough stuff. Could be a tough month of March on Tucks. By the time this is over he may wish he waived. Belak will start that ball rolling tonight in Fla.
But you do raise another good point about star players maybe wanting to stay away from Toronto for awhile if this situation ends up getting real ugly which I think it will. Kind of reminds when we used to take warfarin out to kill rats around my brother-in-laws farmhouse. I remember the guy at the store telling us rats won't come around for a 100 years after they pick up the smell of the dead carcasses.

only in his decision to do what he did.certainly not for the reasons he did it.lol.
|
| Hockey anyone? Posted: 2/28/2008 4:55:07 PM | Bryan Murray could never put Detroit over the hump and it appears to be the same thing in Ottawa. Since Ottawa has no chance in going back to the Cup this year (hasn't happened in 24 yrs), Ottawa needs to hire Scotty Bowman next year to win the Cup.
Come to think of it Murray would be perfect in Toronto next year. He could raise them to mediocre.
|
| Hockey anyone? Posted: 2/28/2008 6:05:11 PM | We don't want Murray. He's never won anything and he won't with the Sens either. They peaked last year and i said so this summer. Ten years they've been screwing around with that club and not once did they ever go out and get themselves bonafide starting goaltending. i'll give them credit for trying with hasek the one year, but he wimped out on them when they really needed him.
Lots of folks know darn well that the Ottawa police have been more than fair with that hockey club. Way more than fair. Emery had no business flapping his gums on national Tv talking about harrassment. Must have left a lot of egg on the faces of a number of players in that dressing room. This guy's an island unto himself in that room. Half that club must be shaking their head with the breaks they've been given around there. No wonder McGratton and Neal wanted to take a round out of him in practice. At least they went to bat for their team. The guy should just shut his mouth, get to the rink on time, try to exemplify the professional he's supposed to be, and play net if he can.
Murray going behind the bench and also getting Marty Lapointe, Stillman and Commodore should give them a boost for a couple of weeks here, but the cancer has set in in there. Emery needs to spend the rest of the season in Binghampton, and Murray has to have the guts to send him there.
Apparently Murray tried to convince Chicargo to swap both goalies. How desperate is that? The bhulin wall and old fan source of ridicule Lalime for Emery and Gerber. That one must instill a lot of confidence in Ottawa. They couldn't run Lalime out of town fast enough after the leafs pumped a bunch of soft ones by him a few years back. Now they're willing to bring him back. They're toast. ------------------------------------
4-0 Bruins in the second against those high octane Pens. Pens will regret not bolstering that defence and goaltending instead of going after Hossa. Bruins could creep to within 4 of the Sens tonight. That Bruins coach should be a coach of the year candidate as well with all the injuries that squad's had. I don't know how they keep hanging in there but they play a solid team game.
|
| Hockey anyone? Posted: 2/28/2008 7:15:04 PM | Ya you're right sly sending Bryan Murray to Leaf Stagnation would be considered cruel and unusual punishment.
Hossa out with a sprained knee in first game as a Pen. Aean Avery the Leaf beater has 5 goals in his last six games.
I wish the Wings would have traded for Brad Richards.

| Hockey anyone? Posted: 2/28/2008 8:10:16 PM | """...Brad Richards....""" Somebody looks totally pumped about going to Dallas. 5 helpers in his first game with them.

| Hockey anyone? Posted: 2/29/2008 10:52:52 AM | Dallas picking up Richards was huge. The Ducks are still the team to beat however. And both have north American leadership. | |
|
| Hockey anyone? Posted: 2/29/2008 11:05:29 AM | Kaos, Dont get to high on the Ducks we all know the playoffs are a different season!!
Detroit should have beat them last year if Schneider didnt break his arm!!! Its who stays healthy and gets a few breaks!!!!
Mr. Pronger has a way of taking cheap shots that puts his team at a disadvantage! I dont understand why he does that he is a huge guy that lets his temper get the best of him!!! Maybe he is losing his skills!!! Time will tell!!!
|
| Hockey anyone? Posted: 2/29/2008 11:36:38 AM | Messier used to do that occassionally as well, but I'd take a Pronger or a Phaneuf, or even a Chelly in his younger day with their mean streaks over what I watched last night with Hal Gill and his dovelike ways. Pittsburgh fans might have caught firsthand why I said what i said in the other thread about making him our Lady Byng candidate when he was priviliged enough to don the illustrious blue and white for us.
The game was starting to get pretty chippy and with ten minutes left, little Maxime Talbot scrunched a Bruin face first into the boards like so many other Bruins have been scrunched this year. The whistle blew. Big Chara was right there and he immediately came up with the gloves on and threw a few Talbots way overtop of another Bruin and gave him a facewash with Gill standing no more than a foot away. Chara sat there staring at him expecting him to step in and get in the middle of the fray as there was a couple of guys milling around there.
Gill not only wasn't interested in sticking up for his new mates, he actually turned the other way and looked off into space across the rink as if he was checking out some set of nice tata's in the crowd or something. Definitely sent a message to Chara. Don't pick me please. lol
I can't actually blame Gill for not wanting to mess with Chara, but come on, Gill's 6'7", 250 and Chara's 6' 9", 250. Don't be looking away while your 5'11" guy is getting his face washed. If Gill's not gonna step up to the plate here, then I guess it'll have to be a smaller guy.
If Pitt and Boston match up in the playoffs that's going to be a nasty little series. Bruins win ugly all the time.
Leafs win in Tampa tonight will pay out close to 30 to one odds for a three game sweep this week with the wins over the Sens & Panthers already posted. After that big announcement by Mats earlier in the week, Anyone having enough faith to throw a C note on it collects 3 grand..
Go Leafs Go baby!

| Hockey anyone? Posted: 2/29/2008 12:00:57 PM | Yes Go Leafs Go! Keep the circus rolling.
As for the Anaheim /Detroit series of last year. Yes the Wings outplayed them but the Ducks won the series, and that is all that matters. Wings had a great year going to the Confrence final. But I can't figure Ken Holland out and his reluctance to add some Canadian blood to this squad. Richards would have been perfect. Would they have taken Datsuyk?
