| Thread: Hockey anyone? Posted: 3/23/2008 5:37:05 PM | | "foo fighters beat the Leafs 4-1 last night". Sorry, but the Leafs beat the Sabres 4-1 two nights ago and the Senators 5-4 last night. I'm not sure if this was a joke that went over my head. The Leafs are a playoff quality team that had a poor start and some bad breaks. With some luck or little bad luck and addition of a 30 goal scorer, which could happen with this year's draft pick, this team could do damage to the opposition in the playoffs. I don't think they could win the Stanley Cup but they could win the Eastern Conference. | |

| Thread: Hockey anyone? Posted: 3/23/2008 7:08:48 PM | Leafs one 30 goal scorer away from the Stanly Cup Final. Wasn't that supposed to be Blake this year?

| Thread: Hockey anyone? Posted: 3/23/2008 7:30:26 PM | Kaos, you confuse me for a Leafs fan. I'm enjoying it as much as you are. I grew up a Habs fan before the Oilers came to the NHL, so I have always appreciated the Leafs' run of futility. I certainly didn't want to see them succeed this year. Their ineptitude makes for too much laughter around the water cooler at work to have it any other way. Plus, if they ever do succeed the Leafs fans will be absolutely intolerable. | |

| Thread: Hockey anyone? Posted: 3/23/2008 7:56:31 PM | Well keep yukkin' it up there lads. He who laffs last laffs best. Yukk yukk. We're not done playin' this year out just yet. Islanders were 4 points out going into the final weekend last year and they slipped in. We're 4 points back with 6 to play and the team we need to catch is up next for a back to back. So that part of the equation is in our own hands for this week.
It's the Caps and the Panthers that are of concern here. Sabres are going to finally go in the tank with Numminen filing his grievance charges today. Somebody let it out of the bag to the buffalo locker room the relatively cheap terms both Briere and Drury were willing to re-sign for last year to stay with the Sabres. I see them flatlining finally.
Caps, Panthers, Leafs and Bruins could all be tied for 8th with one week to go.
I just don't like an opening round matchup with the Pens even though our goaltending kicks the herd out of theirs. . I think we'd match up better and could take Jersey since we clearly outplayed them 3 of the 4 games even though they won. No other club put 40 plus shots on Marty this year and we did it twice two weeks ago. If the old Patty Quinn core to this club is gonna get busted up this summer, i'd like to see them get closure on those pain in the ar$e Devils once and for all and take them out in the first round.. The east can thank us for it later.
Islanders were missing 11 regulars out of their lineup tonight in Flyers win.

Growing up in Windsor Ontario I was held captive by old weird Harold and the other child molesters down at the Gardens. We rarely got to see those great Habs teams of the 70s as Harold forced us to watch the Hapless Leafs. Then in the 80s we were denied Gretzky. I now accept my fate and rather enjoy the circus. They already have the match up figured out. lol Forgetting that they are still in 12th place!

| Thread: Hockey anyone? Posted: 3/24/2008 5:31:40 PM | | The Leafs are a 30 goal scorer away from the Stanley Cup Final. Your weak response to that was "Wasn't that supposed to be Blake this year". Actually Blake was supposed to be a 40 goal scorer, but he didn't reach that. If he had the Leafs would be in the playoffs. Like I said they're a 30 goal scorer from winning the Eastern Conference. I still don't think they'd be good enough to win the Cup, but they would win the East. This year there is no dominent team in the East. Whoever makes the playoffs in the East has as good a chance as the top seeded team to make it to the finals. I would have to say the Eastern winner will NOT win the Stanley Cup. Being a Leaf fan I still would say they would NOT win, the East have no dominent teams. | |

They have one - Mats Sundin. In fact, they've had one pretty much every year since his arrival.
Also...maybe you should try to figure out what they are away from a playoff spot, as opposed to "...away from a Stanley Cup Final". That's just a ridiculous comment.

| Thread: Hockey anyone? Posted: 3/24/2008 9:26:31 PM | If there was ever a year where the East is totally up for grabs, it's this year. Carolina is the other matchup i wouldn't want to see the Leafs have to hook up with too early either, but that's not a likely possibility first round anyway.
That's the only club in the East the Leafs ended up on the season on the short end at 1-2-1, bearing in mind that OT loss the Leafs led 2-0 with a minute and half to go, so school of hard knocks stops them from being 2-2 on the year with the Canes. They went 2-1-1 against the Strangers, 2-2 with the Pens, Panthers and the Caps, and the Flyers as well with the Leafs losing one in january when they peppered them with 56 shots.
In their own division, they're 4-3 against last years Eastern conference champs with one tilt left there. They're 3-3-1 against the Sabres with one left there. We're 3-1-2 against the Habs with 2 Saturday nite matchups left with them. And we're walking into the matchup with the bruins at 3-2-1.
So apart from the sweep by the Devils in which we seriously outplayed them in 3 of those games, I like our chances with pretty much anyone if we're lucky enough to get our foot in the door here. They need to run the table way beyond these two with the Bruins, but nothing says they can't do it. If they do get in, maybe someone could point out to me a hotter club going into the playoffs.
Those same Isles from last night turned around tonight and beat the Pens 4-1.

| Thread: Hockey anyone? Posted: 3/25/2008 5:59:23 AM | | This year the Leafs and any team in the East only have to find a playoff spot because after that making it to the finals is easier than any other year. As stated before and quite obvious there is no real dominent team in the East. The Habs are in 1st yet the Leafs are in 12th, but have a WINNING record against them(3-1-1). Isn't that clear enough to show that the East is pretty even and whoever makes it to the playoffs has as good a chance to make it to the finals ? | |

| Thread: Hockey anyone? Posted: 3/25/2008 7:30:16 AM | The Leafs got lucky it looks like Sundin will be out another night.
The Leafs will win the first round in 5 games over Montreal. In the 2nd round they will sweep the Devils who will lose Broduer in game six of the first round. Then in the Conference final they will sweep Pittsburgh when the taxi carrying Syd , Malkin, Stall and the Pittsburgh Zamboni driver crashes prior to game 1.
In the Stanley Cup final, Detroit trounces the Hapless Leafs 48-1 in a 4 game sweep. The only Laugh goal comes when Mike Babcock falls into a trance and pulls goalie Jim Howard in the first minute of game 1. The Wings play with no net minder the rest of the series. Steve Yzerman feeling sorry for turning down the Laughs offer of team Czar comes out of retirement to sign with the Leafs and score their only goal of the series into an empty net with 10 seconds left. Yzerman after ripping the "C" off of Matt Sundin's shirt staples it to the head of Richard Peddie while shouting "this is for Keon, Sittler and Clark"!

| Thread: Hockey anyone? Posted: 3/25/2008 10:50:16 AM | Am I missing something here? The Leafs are in 12th place! Not just 4 points ut, but behind 3 other teams. PLUS, the team they are chasing has a game in hand! The Leafs would do themselves a favour by just losing the remainder of their games and getting a lottery ball. The Stamkos Cup is the only Cup they have a realistic shot at winning.
(That said, I hope they do make it, if only for the sake of my playoff pool. It's always great for a laugh when some Leafs tool picks Mats Sundin with the first overall pick )

| Thread: Hockey anyone? Posted: 3/25/2008 11:18:21 AM | """...The Leafs are in 12th place! Not just 4 points ut, but behind 3 other teams..."""
Oilers were in 14th place, 11 points back less than three weeks ago. Looks like moving up 5 spots wasn't quite the herculean task everyone makes it out to be. Winning cures all. It's very simple. 6 games left. 12 possible points to put them at 92 could get them there regardless of how many teams are in the way. Bruins may have a game in hand, but they've also won only 2 of their last 11 outings.
Canes should take the Caps tonight. Sens will (?) show up tonight against the Sabres. We'll handle our end of things, knock wood, with the Prunes. It's Fla with a bunch of games still (3) against Atlanta and Tampa still that's the team to watch out for. Let's hope for some good old fashioned divisional rivalry tonight from the Lightning. Caps and Panthers still have 2 games with each other, so here's to hoping they each split those two in regulation time..
If Leafs run table they could still get there. They're not dead yet and it would be completely unsportsmanlike for any fan to suggest a club tank when they're still mathematically alive. Some of these guys are playing for jobs and contracts next year to feed their families. If Bruins and Flyers won no more games this year, everyone would be doing the 'what if'. Can't leave any doubts. Leave it all out there on the field of play. That's what it's all about.
Hell, even the Senators could be on the cusp going into the last week if they don't pull up their socks soon. Montreal's the only teams that's clinched so far in the east by my records. The door is still open.

You sure about that? I remember them being 11 points back at the trade deadline but that was a month ago. They've gone 12-3 since that time and they still haven't caught up. Plus, they still need help, help that the Flames COULD have supplied last night had they not crapped the bed in Colorado.

What in the world was that rambling all about? Hard coming down from that suff isn't it? You're starting to sound delusional if nott downright hallucinogenic.. Try eating something. It might help.
Meanwhile, Leafs may have caught a break here. Just finishing my pre-game meal and noticing that Marc Savard and Andrew Ference are out for tonights tilt. Devereaux expected back in for us tonight. Antropov slated to be ready for Thursdays match.
The world's full of if's. If the Red Wings weren't so friggin' old I'd actually pick them to get beyond the second round.

| Thread: Hockey anyone? Posted: 3/25/2008 4:18:52 PM | My pick for the Cup would be either San Jose or Anaheim. Anaheim to me is he favorite. San Jose never seems to get it done in the playoffs. Its time for them to get past the 2nd round. (but not if they meet Detroit) Toronto's biggest break was having Sundin sit out again.
As for purple microdot the only ones on that sh it also believe the Leafs will make the playoffs.

Stajan and Steen are growing up. Ponygirl's played well too. You never know. leafs could still wind up with 5 or 6 20 goal scorers on this roster by the end.
I think I picked the Sharks back in the summer. Might be the only pick I did get right in the west. I think this is their year to go to the Final. If it's the Devils they meet, I'm gonna pick Marty B. Devils can't seem to beat the Strangers this year though. If the Devils don't come out of the east, the Sharks will prevail.
Keep your eye on those young Caps though. This is the kind of season where a team like that can all of a sudden find itself in an Eastern Final and then be plagued with huge expectations for next year from the reborn again fanbase down there.
Oh. It's time for: Hockey that matters.

| Thread: Hockey anyone? Posted: 3/25/2008 6:58:40 PM | Well I think i hear old dandy don meredith singin' "Put out the lights...the party's over..." 5-1 beantowners with about 5 minutes left. Flat flat flat effort. Leafs drop to 7-4 for march. 8-4-1 for feb. The team got better as the season went on. All those lost points in the first two months ended up costing them this year. There is a nucleus of a half decent hockey club there though.
Folks these days somehow got with this new trendy term of blowing up a hockey club. They need a bit of retooling, but in this era, every team has to retool every year to some extent. I don't see this leaf squad needing a total overhaul.
Man if we go one more year of this Cup-less drought, I'll start to understand the pain it must have been to have been a Red Wings fan from 55 to 97.
That's it baby. Bruins first 6 goal game since november. Time to give Raycroft a start Thursday.

yep. I didn't have the same conviction of that one that I had with the other ones with the sabres and the sens though. Just something about that Bruins club that the leafs can't seem to get their head around. They're good at putting you sound asleep and leafs need to play with jump if they're to have a chance. I had a feeling they might come out flat tonight. Tucker missed an open net in the first. Moore missed one in the third. A couple of chintzy calls against us and a couple of flagrant fouls by the Bruins not called but that's not an excuse.
Maurice should have thrown that Marlie line out there in the first to give us that jump we lacked all night. I had a feeling with Devereaux coming back in there'd be a bunch of switching around again in the lines, and guys were missing each other's plays all night. They weren't clicking. Maybe they were a bit tight to boot who knows. they played better on the road in the east than they did at home most nights.
Oh well. She's all over but the cryin' now kids.
Looks like the Caps are the only team left standing in the hunt after tonight.
