A much better final than last year's, all in all. Detroit was so determined in the third period. Shots after 2 were 18-16. with three minutes to play they were 30-17.
Experience wins. Pens will come back tougher for this.
Kudos to Nik Lidstrom on being the first European to captain a Stanley Cup winning squad. And kudos to zetterberg for being only third non-Canadian to win Conn Smythe.

Have fun tonight kaos ... and no burning any cop cars!!!!

Tomorrow I wear my Lidstrom jersey. I gotta give credit to the Pens, they scared the hell out of me.

That damn JIRI HUDLER AND HIS STUPID DECISIONS LATE IN GAMES. He cost the Red Wings game 5 with his penalty and did the same thing tonight causing a penalty but it didn't cost us the game, I wanted to punch him straight in the face.

Pens showed a lot of class raising their sticks to their fans before they skated off.

The Pens have youth and now experience under their belts so will be very dangerous for years to come, but I'd never count out the Wings. Not with a GM like Kenny Holland and an owner like Mike Illitch -- amazing team.

So many great Wing stories: McCarty gets picked up, makes the team right before the playoffs, and wins his fourth Cup. Osgood, desperately thrown in after Hasek faltered, plays his heart out and wins his second Cup. Even though he didn't play, the ageless wonder, Chelios, wins his third Cup (he said post-game he definitely plans to be back again next season...lol). Drapes, after getting picked up so many years ago for literally a dollar, wins his fourth Cup.

We need to trade Hudler before next season...lol.

Enjoy it my beloved Wings, you earned it.

I'm watching the post-game interviews and Ozzie gave a real heartfelt tribute to Drake for that very reason, prairie.

Opened up my hometown online paper this morning and saw this nice blog from one of the beat writers, John Niyo...thought I'd share...

Empty beer cans, and a full cupboard

Some final thoughts tonight (OK, this morning) after watching the Stanley Cup wheeled out of the Wings' locker room to the team bus in a shopping cart littered with empty beer cans ...

Injuries? Yeah, they had a few. More than a few, actually. Talked to a champagne-soaked trainer, Piet van Zant, in the zamboni entrance a couple hours ago and his initial response was, "Everybody was playing through something." But then rattled off the abridged version: Tomas Holmstrom was playing with a sports hernia (for a long time) and a torn hamstring. Valtteri Filppula wasn't practicing because of a fairly signficant knee injury. Brad Stuart also was playing with a knee injury that would've had him sitting in the regular season. Darren Helm limped out of there tonight with a nasty charley horse. And, yes, there was more than just concussion-like symptoms plaguing Johan Franzen, but van Zant said the team and Franzen will wait a day or two before explaining what exactly went on with that whole saga. There's more than that, obviously. But that gives you an idea of just why we call this the toughest trophy in sports to win.

As for the rest of the housekeeping, Mike Babcock will sign a new three-year deal in the next day or two. I bet it'll be announced Friday -- just a guess, though.

Dallas Drake said he didn't want to make a decision right now on his future. Too emotional, he said. But living away from his family all season was brutal, and now that he's won the Cup, I expect he'll retire. Ditto Dominik Hasek, who doesn't get enough credit for the composure he showed the last six weeks. His son graduated from high school last week (Dom missed it, as he was on the road) and Michael is headed to Michigan State in the fall, but I know Dom's daughter and wife were ready to move back to the Czech Republic a year ago, so now's a perfect time to do that. Chris Chelios hated sitting in the Finals, but he's not ready to quit and he'll be back for another year. Brad Stuart? Now that he's been on this side of the fence, the lure of the West coast isn't quite as strong, I'm guessing. Andreas Lilja? Probably gone, replaced in the lineup by Jonathan Ericsson.

And what does all that mean? The Wings have about $40 million committed to next year's roster, and the cap is exp expected to be upwards of $56 million. Some of that will go to resigning RFAs Filppula, Howard and UFAs Stuart and Chelios. But that'll still leave a good chunk of money to spend in free agency.

Scary as it sounds for the rest of the league, the Wings might be even better a year from now.

He also wrote a nice article about the win, here's the link....

European teams have been doing this forever. Many North American players were introduced to this show of respect when they went to Europe to play during the lockout. After the lockout, some NHL teams began doing the same thing. They picked it up overseas.

There's today's trivia for you.

I thought the classier move - and one I had never seen before - was when the Detroit Red Wings all turned and applauded the Pittsburgh players as the Penguins were leaving the ice. Announcers said they were applauding the fans. That wasn't the case at all.

More from the Detroit News online (Dave Dye, reporter), this time about Zetterberg.....

.....Henrik Zetterberg, the 210th player selected overall in the 1999 NHL draft, showed what a two-way superstar he has become by making some of the series' most memorable plays that led to him being voted the Conn Smythe Trophy winner as the Finals' most valuable player.....

Zetterberg showed in these playoffs he's an offensive superstar.

Then there's the defensive star. Zetterberg, along with Pavel Datsyuk, is a finalist for the Selke Trophy, awarded to the league's top defensive forward.

Zetterberg takes great pride in his defensive ability.

"That's always been a part of my game," he said. "In Sweden, you learn to play defense first. And then you develop the offense later.

"I'm happy I still can play that game over here and I get an opportunity to play that way. I like to do that."

His teammates certainly appreciate his two-way skills.

"That's where he stands out from other superstars in this league," forward Johan Franzen said. "You don't see other superstars do that. Not a lot of them anyway. That makes him real special.

"When your best players are playing like that, you don't want to do anything different."

Crosby has been hyped as "the face of the game," but Zetterberg hounded him for much of the series.

Not bad for the quiet guy overlooked as a seventh-round pick nearly a decade ago.

"I was a real small guy," Zetterberg said, referring to why he wasn't drafted earlier. "I didn't have a lot of muscles on me. Not many scouts were looking for small, tiny players. They looked for big guys that could be big in front of the net and have a good shot. My shot was awful. It's still not very good.

"Letting me play in Sweden for a while helped (three more years after being drafted). I got a lot of experience there.

"When I came over here (he joined the Wings in 2002-03), I was ready to play. It helped to play with good players. My first year, I played with Pavel and Brett Hull most of my games. It makes it a lot easier."

Zetterberg is now known for his great vision on the ice and an uncanny anticipation of where the puck is going.

He's certainly more talkative than when he first joined the Wings, but he's still pretty quiet, according to teammates.

"Guys that are a little bit more quiet, they lead by example," teammate Darren McCarty said. "That's what he does."

And he's done it as well as anyone in the playoffs this year.

ditto on the Congrats to the Wings and their fans. Classy stuff saluting and applauding their foes as they left the ice last night. Excellent hockey club.

Congrats to the Pens as well. Lots of moxy there. Most of the Wings agreed they had their hands pretty full for the last week and a half. Crosby can be proud of his game and his club. Apart from the first two games, that was a pretty entertaining series. Real good detroit hockey club though.

Okay,

so my hometown boys didn't win this year.

But I'm proud of them nevertheless. There were a lot of people acting like the Pens should just lay down and die on the ice, because Detroit was the "better" team. But we put up a helluva fight and I'm proud of them. We're still green, but we have a lot of potential and I can see us coming back even stronger next year.

Way to go, Pens!! And way to go, Wings!!

Pen fans have nothing to be ashamed of. Your team played their hearts out and gave my Wings a good run for the money. Next year could very well be your time.

i have said it before but...i think the key to detroits success is that every player has played on the fourth line and worked themselves up.they not only appriciate their teamated, but they appreciate their roles.

Just read that HNIC might drop its famous theme song. Didn't know they had to pay $500 every time they played it?!? Hmmm....can't imagine any other theme song, though...it would definitely feel weird.

Oh yeah, congrats to the team that won.

SAVE THE HOCKEY SONG

Toronto's Best Rock Variety 92.5 JACK FM has started a petition against the CBC to save the Hockey Night and Canada Theme Song. It reads as follows:

To: CBC
The CBC is threatening to get rid of the Hockey Night in Canada theme song. For many of us, it’s the first song we ever learned. It has stayed with us through our lives. It has comforted us on cold winter nights, and it has become our true national anthem. Future generations of Canadians deserve the opportunity to share in its musical legacy. Sign the JACK FM Jeff Brown and Carly Klassen Petition to Save the Hockey Night in Canada Theme Song and show the CBC your voice.

Sincerely,

Add your name here:

"Smack, who this year would have won this hypothetical series matchup...
Pens vs Flames?"

depends on which team showed up for the flames. but really if your asking that based on the flames beating the sharks, the 2 more tough fought series where ethier cujo gets the start or kpper is playing at his tops. so flames beat the pens down in 7, pens didnt play a team that could bang the body as hard as the flames could. the speed would play a big factor in games 1 and 2 but working game 3 home crowd and the hits pens start to slow.

look at how the pens couldnt handle the wings in the hitting, flames are a much harder hitting team. flames sharks and ducks would have hit the pens out of the playoffs. preds could have given them a run for there money.

its all kinda stupid though. kipper sucked we lost to a sharks team that we outplayed, out hit and stopped. no team has made the finals after having to go through the flames in the last 3 years. really showed witht the sharks this season, hardist team to play against. words from lots of nhlers not me.

i dont get how people are saying the pens were a good series against the wings this season but the flames were blown out last when it was the same thing other then the flames had the wings pushed back in game 6.

well enjoy the cup kaos 12 more days til the next season starts for me. entry draft so so soon cant wait.

Why?
Without change they will struggle again.
They also have one of the worst cap situations in the West division.

Calgary could not have handled the speed of either the Wings or the Pens.

"""...They also have one of the worst cap situations in the West division."""

Since the regular season ended about 7 or 8 weeks ago, TSN has been going one by one thru the clubs figuring out each clubs off season needs and possible moves.

On the Flames:
Needs: Four top nine forwards, one defenceman

"""The Calgary Flames' 2007-2008 season ended with another first-round playoff defeat and, with a slew of free agents, the summer promises to be one of significant upheaval....The core of the defence is strong, but the Flames also have a lot of money invested there, potentially making change necessary if only to create greater financial flexibility. Few, if any, teams can spend upwards of $20-million on their defencemen and the Flames already have more than $23-million slated for six returning defencemen. If the Flames get that financial wiggle room, it would give them the opportunity to address some significant holes anticipated in the forward ranks.

Even if Daymond Langkow's long-rumoured contract extension is finalized, the Flames are still going to need a couple of capable scoring forwards; and if the Langkow deal doesn't get done, well, then the forward ranks are practically in disarray....will need to dig into trades and free agent signings in order to upgrade the skill level up front.

...The Flames need to add multiple players, at good value, if they are going to have the necessary scoring depth in order to be a playoff team. Furthermore, Calgary may look to teams that have a surplus of forwards and deal a proven NHL defenceman for a proven player up front. Whatever the solution, the Flames are going to have to make bold moves in order to enter next season with enough forward talent."""

Could be worse I suppose. At least Flames fans know who their GM, their coach and who their captain will be.
