smack have you named your team in the hockey pool yet? Better hurray before someone takes the Flames name.

| Hockey anyone? Posted: 7/23/2008 11:52:51 AM | | Glenn Murray was put on waivers today, I'm guessing someone will take a chance on him after he clears. | |
| Hockey anyone? Posted: 7/23/2008 12:06:47 PM | smack conducting a real draft would be next to impossible. The pool system works much better when all players are scattered as here. No ones twisting your arm without you it will be just like... just like,... The Second Round of the Playoffs! | |
| Hockey anyone? Posted: 7/23/2008 2:34:46 PM | """Glenn Murray...someone will take a chance on him after he clears."""
No doubt about that one, so long as the beantowners are actually going to let go of him. He can be bought out or traded or hung onto if he doesn't clear. 4.15 mill is a stiff price but he's LA alumni and LA's got tons of cap room so maybe they want a veteran in their locker room. He can join ole Derek Armstrong as Sudbury Woves alumni from the early 90's. He also killed penalties back in the day with Peca on the Wolves.
Funny watching Murray in junior I always liked him after he got ticked off with the coach and smashed his stick a couple of times good and hard on the ice getting called back to the bench for a shift change on a dump in one friday night down at the old Arena. Most analysts at the time had his linemates though as the straws that stirred the drink, Brandon Convery pegged as a franchise saver for whatever club drafted him as well as Jamie Matthews. Sometimes he'd play with Armstrong and Barrie Moore as well. They compared Mathews at the time to JR Roenick and Convery to him as well as Yzerman.
Convery was leafs first draft choice the year he went and after a few seasons with the baby leafs out on the rock he eventually had a cup of coffee with the Canucks and a couple of other clubs totalling some 9 goals in 72 NHL games. Mathews i don't think ever played a game in the bigs. Moore wound up with 2 NHL goals in 39 NHL games.
Murray's tailed off a bit the last couple of years, especially in his plus minus numbers, but it would be neat to see him wind up with 400 goals. Something like 63 more to go.

| Hockey anyone? Posted: 7/24/2008 1:19:11 PM | Matt Sundin still has not made up his mind if he wants to play in the NHL another season. Not only that he is not sure if he will comes back but he is also not sure of who he will play for.
If Sundin were a good captain he would rule out all other teams and only consider Toronto. The captain is supposed to be a leader. This is leadership?
Why would the Leafs want him back. This has been your Captain for aprox. the last 10 seasons. The captain is not sure he wants to play for you?
Toronto should cut and run however if they do sign him I would hope Mr Fletcher removes the no trade clause then trades his ass to Atlanta!
This organization has had some great captains...Hap Day, Syl Apps, George Armstrong, Keon, Sitler and some not so great Bob Davidson, Sid Smith, Sundin...Who will be the next captain of the Leafs?

the fact that sundin is still a leaf is loyalty,i would have bolted long ago.

| Hockey anyone? Posted: 7/25/2008 7:04:11 AM | | Loyalty does not equate Leadership! | |
| Hockey anyone? Posted: 7/25/2008 12:04:21 PM | Loyalty does not equate Leadership
you cant be a leader if your not there.in sudins case his loyalty was greatly part of his leadership.a leader is there through thick and thin.that garners respect, respect garners leadership.i have a feeling that sundin doesnt know if it is time to go home or not.he has lots of money,it just might be time for him to pay attention to his family.
| Hockey anyone? Posted: 7/25/2008 12:11:09 PM | | The last two years Sundin has turned down waiving his NTC to go to winning teams. That's pretty loyal, but pretty selfish at the same time. Imagine what Toronto could have pulled in for him, especially last year. | |

why would you want to weaken a team that you are going to?
| Hockey anyone? Posted: 7/25/2008 12:25:47 PM | | You usually don't, because it tends to be prospects in deals like that. More often than not, big trades don't cause serious players to leave the "winning" team. See: Hossa to Pittsburgh. Losing Army and Christensen didn't exactly cripple the Penguins. | |
| Hockey anyone? Posted: 7/25/2008 12:28:46 PM | | sure it didnt cripple them,it did however deplete there depth.if i have an option to get trade or go to a team withour at all weakening it i would take the latter. | |
| Hockey anyone? Posted: 7/25/2008 12:32:30 PM | If Sundin is so loyal why hasn't he ruled out Montreal and Vanc0uver.
Sundin is all about Sundin! With leadership like that you get early springs in the fatherland!
| Hockey anyone? Posted: 7/25/2008 12:33:26 PM | | Nah, it really didn't. They played better without those two players. Value > depth. Look at some of the scrubs that were playing on the third and fourth line for Detroit, but they won a cup. Pittsburgh was giving Ruutu, Laraque, and Hall a ton of time in the playoffs. Would they have won the cup if they had Armstrong and Christensen instead of Hossa? | |
| Hockey anyone? Posted: 7/25/2008 12:41:02 PM | Would they have won the cup if they had Armstrong and Christensen instead of Hossa? Considering Hossa was their best player in the Final... I doubt it. | |
| Hockey anyone? Posted: 7/25/2008 12:46:39 PM | | Crosby was, but that's neither here nor there. | |
| Hockey anyone? Posted: 7/25/2008 12:46:40 PM | | nope, but they woud be a better team now with them.where is hossa again?sudin was there when he didnt have to be.he simply wanted to go down with the ship without having to leave his family for a cup he felt he hadnt deserved.the leafs say that they want sundin back.yet for all he did for the orginization they couldnt understand why he didnt want to leave.why was sundin so loyal to this bumbling order of dimwits?i dont know.he deserves respect for doing so though. | |
| Hockey anyone? Posted: 7/25/2008 12:57:57 PM | Hossa had 3 goals and 7 points in the final. With three goals in the final 3 games. Crosby 2 goals and 6 points. With no goals in the the last 3 games. Hossa was their best.
It's a crap shoot when you go after an unrestricted player at the trade deadline. The gamble got them to the final and every team(that desires to win the Cup) in the league would take that risk. Excluded of course ...Toronto and Calgary!
| Hockey anyone? Posted: 7/25/2008 1:01:39 PM | | I will say, since I wasn't too upset with what they gave up for Hossa, I wasn't heartbroken to see him leave. He's going to try and win a cup next year, then probably take the 10+mil a year from a shit team he was offered this summer. | |
| Hockey anyone? Posted: 7/25/2008 2:00:45 PM | Possibly or maybe Hossa will like it in Detroit and play for less as others have done. Thats why Detroit has stayed on top. Winning players have wanted to be there and sign for less to be a part of the best organization in the NHL. | |
| Hockey anyone? Posted: 7/25/2008 2:02:27 PM | | Hossa's not a winning player though. He gave up in Atlanta to get traded. I'm pretty sure most Detroit fans understand he's a one year thing. Especially since they won't pay anyone more than 7.5mil. He'll get 7.5mil offers from good teams before even having to think about the 10mil from bad ones. | |
| Hockey anyone? Posted: 7/25/2008 2:14:31 PM | Time will tell. It's a no lose situation for Ken Holland. You get a proven goal scorer on the last year of a contract who wants to be there. In the meantime a repeat is fine in Detroit. Cup number 12 on the way. | |
