| Hockey anyone? Posted: 12/12/2005 8:04:48 PM | to fun1 it still is only 16 teams in the playoffs same as it has been for years. and your math is wrong to if the first round was 5 games and the next 2 rounds are 7 then what about the finals? you wanted 16 teams right? which it is top 8 in the west and top 8 in the east. not all the rules have changed. and as for next year and maybe having teams 7 vs 10 and 8 vs 9 i think thats great what a advandage to finsh 1st or 2nd you get to play a team fresh off of a best of 3 playoff series. plus adding the extra teams to the playoffs will be great for the playoff race. is there a problem with the playoffs going into june? hell i love hockey i want it all year round. right after the cup is handed out i start thinking of next season. and vancover is lacking the goaltending and not a deep enough d core to go to the finals. | |

| Hockey anyone? Posted: 12/13/2005 5:38:20 AM | Here is the old playoff format befopre the WHA came into the NHL
1974-75 - With the League now expanded to 18 teams in four divisions, a completely new playoff format was introduced. First, the #2 and #3 teams in each of the four divisions were pooled together in the Preliminary round. These eight (#2 and #3) clubs were ranked #1 to #8 based on regular-season record:
Series A: Team #1 vs Team #8 (best-of-three) Series B: Team #2 vs Team #7 (best-of-three) Series C: Team #3 vs Team #6 (best-of-three) Series D: Team #4 vs Team #5 (best-of-three) The winners of this Preliminary round then pooled together with the four division winners, which had received byes into this Quarterfinal round. These eight teams were again ranked #1 to #8 based on regular-season record:
Series E: Team #1 vs Team #8 (best-of-seven) Series F: Team #2 vs Team #7 (best-of-seven) Series G: Team #3 vs Team #6 (best-of-seven) Series H: Team #4 vs Team #5 (best-of-seven) The four Quarterfinals winners, which moved on to the Semifinals, were then ranked #1 to #4 based on regular season record:
Series I: Team #1 vs Team #4 (best-of-seven) Series J: Team #2 vs Team #3 (best-of-seven) Series K: Winner of Series I vs winner of Series J (best-of-seven)
After the WHA was merged into the leagues the first round went best of five.

| Hockey anyone? Posted: 12/13/2005 6:59:52 AM | fun1.. thats great info... but whats the point? Ultimately... a shorter hockey season? that above looks like a longer one... but Im too lazy to do all the math!! And I like watchin hockey into June! Im more worried of the possibility of a best-of-seven final coming down to a shootout. Who wants that? I dont!!!
And yeah ill try to cut back on whatever dope it is that Im apparently on... picking the Avs over the Sens was a crazy longshot... I know alarm, I know... but someone had to play Devils advocate. Man oh man are Heatley and Spezza finally coming into their own. And wow what a dirty game... I almost forgot that both teams have a history of nastiness.
Thorton is offensive player of the week (but I dunno if the Sharks have any losses with him).. and surprise-surprise, the Kipper was the defensive player of the week. I saw that one coming...
And I forsee.. Vancouver being knocked out early. With Calgary, Detroit, and (for you ladybugg) the Oilers to contend with... they will not be Conference champs.
Hey corry.. Id like to hear your predictions on a few things, whenever you get the time. It might be too early to tell, but lets give it a shot. And of course everyone elses picks too!
Hart trophy (MVP) I pick Daniel Alfredsson (cuz Ottawa will be in the final, he wears the C and hes killin it point-wise)
The Lady Bing I give to Stevie Y (cuz Detroit will be a finalist as well, plus hes won it before... and hes such a nice guy)
Jack Adams award will go to Bryan Murray, whose last NHL stint wasnt even as a coach but as a GM
I think (deep down) that Crosby will win the Calder... but Im gonna go with Ovechkin.
I have either Heatley winning the Selke (his +/- is awesome this year) or, more likely, Jarome Iginla.
The James Norris will go to Brian McCabe but Im picking Schneider cuz hes Red not Blue, and he still might catch McCabe in the overall points.
And lastly.. I have Brodeur LOSING badly (hes a back-to-back winner) to Hasek for what will be a record 7 Vezinas for the Dominator. He will also be a candidate for the Hart trophy as well.. and may take it if hes instrumental in Ottawa gettin the Cup. These are my predictions... guess we'll see when the time comes!!

| Hockey anyone? Posted: 12/13/2005 10:12:13 AM | Hey saiyan_1
Thera are now an extra 4 rounds of hockey that makes an extra 45 games total from what it was then, and an extra 16 games from the 1979-80 playoff structure.
The season is to long and people are loosing interest going into the summer.
Also for people who play the game this takes away from time to recover from injury in the off season. Yes skating does go on in the summer but not at a crazy pace.
Playoffs are great yes... but players need time off to recover from a long hard season.
Go buy a pair of season tickets for your home team and see how long the season is just at home :-) Sometimes you are at the rink 3 times a week!
Vancouver will come on strong in the second half of the season and with them having home ice advantage they will be to hard to beat...but Ottawa will be first overall and win the cup in our barn
Hart Alfie
Art Ross Jagr
Selke Heatley
Calder Ovechkin as he does not have the players around him like Crosby has
Norris Visnovski because of his +/-
Lady Byng Jay Pandolfo
Smythe Hasek
Adams Renney
Vezna 1 of 4 Hasek, Joseph, Fernandez, **Luongo (faced over 900 shots about 300 more than ayone else but has no team in front of him to win games he is the best in nets by far)
Jennings Hasek/Emery | |

| Hockey anyone? Posted: 12/13/2005 6:07:04 PM | and anyone thinkinng vancover is going to be stronger they havn't heard about the fact that Dan Cloutier will miss at least the rest of the regular season because of a knee injury that will require surgery. so that makes auld there starter and under the new cba and them being so close to the cap its going to make it tough to get a player worth anything.
Cloutier partially tore the anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee when Anaheim forward Rob Niedermayer ran into him in the crease during the first period of a Nov. 20 game.
and the season is a perfect amout of lenght i have season tickets and go to every game and love it also make it to some whl games. so enough of that talk or about the 16 teams making the playoffs. 8 in the west and 8 in the east. although i am looking for ward to next seasons possible play in for the play offs.
Calder-dion phanif
Smythe-kippursoff, or iggy most likly iggy
Vezina-kippursoff
Jennings -kippursoff, or hasek
Jack Adams Award-hurts to say it but wanye gots this one if the coyotes make the playoffs
Selke-should go to yelle

Did you hear about Robert Blake, I hope he is ok. He was taken off the Ice on a stretcher. He apparently went into the boards headfirst. I don't know any of the details..
That Atlanta / Detroit games was crazy. Atlanta had a 4 goal lead going into the 3rd and it was wipped out in what 8 minutes. I am glad Atlanta got the 7th goal to win the game. They deserved that win.
Even Florida won tonight against the Preditors.
Some awesome hockey games tonight.

There is going to be a deal made and the Canucks are going to get a premium netminder.
I am hearing that either Luongo or Kolzig will wind up in Van.
|
| Hockey anyone? Posted: 12/14/2005 8:08:50 AM | i didn't say a deal wasn't going to be made just that with the cap it makes a trade alittle harder, they can remove Cloutier from there cap to get extra space but i'm not sure exatly how that works and there is lots of talk about the chanucks and who they are trading and going to get. hey all the more power if you guys get a great goalie i hope the oil get one 2.
and the awards are my picks not yours. they are all legit picks. you notice how i didn't put and flames or even pick scoring leaders? cause i don't think were going to have any the scoreing isn't high here in calgary we play defence and grid teams into subbmisson.
and i think the trade might be with the wild for a netminder. would make sense they have 2 top nocth goalies but thats it.
|
| Hockey anyone? Posted: 12/14/2005 8:25:58 AM | | I believe Luongo and Boumeester will go to Vancouver. And unfortunately Bertuzzi and at least one other will go if the big line does not start dominating. I know Bertuzzi had one goal for sure last night. If he is playing really well, Van. may only throw one extras. It does look like they may give up on him. Crazy. The guy will get back on track. This is an adjustment year for him. He has the Moore thing hanging on him as added pressure to the rule changes. The rule changes alone affect the big run and gun hard hitting players such as him. He'll adjust or fade in the obscurity of Florida and Iron Mike land. He may even deck Mikey next! | |
|
| Hockey anyone? Posted: 12/14/2005 9:24:19 AM | All this talk about vancouver... who wont make it past the first round of playoffs... but we will see when the time comes. They are not the only team that needs better netminding. Im sure we will see plenty of trades before the deadline. i hear that a Bertuzzi trade...is a myth. Guess we will see... Smackem... your input hockeywise is cool... but easy on the name calling maybe? Im pretty sure the finals reference and prediction made between the Bolts and the Sens... was the Eastern Conference finals. Im betting that the assumption was made that all would know what he was referring to, since we are all pretty hockey knowledgable here, at least enough to know whose in what conference!!! No need to call anyone an idiot, and the forum guidelines are pretty clear about such shit. Nuff said.
Last nights Detroit game was crazy... pissed that we came back only to lose it, but hey...it was a fun game to watch, even if it was only catchin pieces of the game. thats the first.. and last time Atlanta will beat the Wings, and I dont think they deserved to win after blowin a 4 goal lead, and only won because of a broken stick at the wrong time when the heat was on.
And ladybugg... sorry about your Oilers last night... down to a shootout.. and did Kozlov deak the pants off of Morrison (and whoa is he a big dude for a goalie... almost my size...) Looks like the oilers have some major games ahead, facing Vancouver twice, the Flames, and LA whose been playing aiight...
Speakin of moves... did you all catch Forsberg last night? Sweet! And Eche is lookin better now that hes healin... so theres a lil sunlight for you Flier fans...
I got Dallas over Buffalo... Turcos been quietly rackin up the wins again... I also got L.A.over the Caps
The Bolts are on a five game streak, so theyre my pick tonite. Anaheims luck wont run two games straight... they are goin back-to-back with the two teams that will be top contenders for the Cup.
|
| Hockey anyone? Posted: 12/14/2005 9:47:53 AM | Vancouver was dealt a blow...Cloutier is done for the season...
I wonder if they are going to trade for a goalie...or rely on what they have.
If they do trade for a goalie, who would they deal, and who would they try to pick up. It would seem to me that Sean Burke in T. Bay is probably a viable option, and Philly's back up has looked good as well.
|
| Hockey anyone? Posted: 12/14/2005 10:52:22 AM | | smackemhard: Before you call someone an idiot, you should do some research. If you had, you would have found we were discussing the Eastern finals, and not the Cup finals. But then again, that would require an ability to read, and an ability to spell. Quick lesson--your is a possesive (your car) you're is you are contracted, and used to say "you're an idiot"; there is a location (i am going there), their is possesive (their car). As my granddad used to say "Better to be silent and thought an ass than to speak and remove all doubt." | |

| Hockey anyone? Posted: 12/14/2005 11:02:43 AM | I am hearing that Bert is getting moved as well as someone else for the trade for the new #1 netminder.
Geting rid of BErt gives the Nucks the $$$ they will need to pay this tender.
As we saw in the Thorton deal no matter how big you are in the new NHL you can be moved.
In VAn the NUcks have not been doing as well as they were predicted to do with their big line so the team need a shake up and if you get a Luongo in the pipes the guys up fromt will know that there is a solid guy in nets where they can wheel and deal the play more in the offensive zone.
Smack keep smackin em buddy love your input from the western area :-)
|
| Hockey anyone? Posted: 12/14/2005 11:07:31 AM | I would bet heavily that Florida will not trade Luongo for any deal that Vancouver offers, unless that deal includes Nasland.
Florida has no viable back up that would make them competitive, and Luongo is perhaps in the top 5 goalies in the league...Bert is not in the top 10 with skaters.
Like I said earlier, I think Burke is a viable option, also, L.A. has some excess goalie equipment too.

| Hockey anyone? Posted: 12/14/2005 11:21:10 AM | Luongo wants to go to a contender.... his is most likely the best goaltender in the league.
Florida needs an on ice leader such as a Bert can bring and you build around the guys who can put the puck in the net.
Florida is not going to be competitive for another 2 years at least right now they are sitting with 24 points, 5th from the cellar. They are 11 games out of first place and with the new leage that is going to be next to impossible to make up.
Bert is also one of the leagues most dominant power forwards something that Florida could build on.
That’s what we did here in Ottawa.
We built a team of speed and offence that Florida’s now coach stagnated.
Our final piece of the puzzle was the goaltender.

| Hockey anyone? Posted: 12/14/2005 11:23:08 AM | | having gone against Luongo a few times, the Bolts would love to have him with us than against. The Bolts need to hold on to Burke...Grahame is on a 9 game win streak, but has still let in a number of soft goals, and you never want to lose a quality guy like Burke. | |
