I was well into the punk scene in Vancouver in the late 70s and early 80s, there used to be a thriving scene here. Most memorable gig was U.K. Subs in '81 I think..?? I still have close to 1000 LPs in my storage locker, some of that stuff I just can't bare to listen to now but the memories are sweet.

Someone nailed it here... Its an attitude, a mindset and a lifestyle to one extent or another. There will always be punk in some incarnation. That's my opinion also anyway.

To say I know Derf from FEAR .. is an understatement. That band was responsible for the ten year ban against punk bands from Saturday Night Live, since Belushi brought them on.

In truth they were all suburbanites -- and it was a ploy. Yep.

Pop punk --- runs against the original punk ethos and was first heard in bands like Offspring (Orange COunty Sound) who were a bunch of aging guys my age who started whining like kids to appeal to the young skateboarder class of 15 year olds. The entire genre is fake....

But so was FEAR circa 77 ! ahahahahahahahahah.

Derf and i were responsible for the Northridge quake....nevermind.

You said a mouthful, khrockproducer!

Was punk ever dead? The original form came out of England during a time of serious political unrest, a staggering unemployment problem, and restless youths who couldn't see the purpose of a world putting all its faith in arrogant modernism.

I believe that the litmus test for true hardcore punk is twofold:
1) Is it political?
2) Is it emotional? (Often angry, but also often satirical.)
It's often described as "defined by anger."

I think these are the two ingredients that separate the genuine article from the wannabes.
It's a powerful rejection of the dominant paradigm. So, I don't think personally that Rancid, The Monks, the Ramones, Sum 41, etc. are real punk bands. Although I get a kick out of them...

Anger has not been co-opted by time; the music still lives. OK, the Pistols are still amazing - but who doesn't love the wit of NO/FX?

Punks are always profoundly political; generally it speaks to the outrage regarding socio-economic inequality, the rejection of societal norms, and pointed political discourse.

Canadian punk icon Joey Sh*thead Keithley (D.O.A.) sums it all up nicely: "Hardcore [punk] is thinking for yourself. Don't get sucked into mainstream media bullsh*t. Open your mind." His motto is the profound equation:

Talk-Action = 0

Punk is a great example of using a medium to promote political awareness. Remember, it was folky (but an original punk in my own mind) Woody Guthrie who first stood on the soapbox against the oppressors and affixed his guitar with the slogan, “This machine kills fascists.”

Long live Punk!

As one who lived the lfe at the time i would have to agree. Punk was aproduct of the social, political and economic conditions of the time. add to this the fact that rock and roll had become old and bloated with albums that took years to produce and epic songs of 20 minutes or longer in duration. The songs required vituoso skill to play, and had no meaning to youth looking to break out and discover life. The people who played the music had become so rich that the average fan could not relate to them.

When punk broke out of the seedy bars of New York and London, it's rapid 3 chord structure, songs of angst and rebellion and humor, it's street level fashion cred and nihilistic attitude were an easy and instant hit with the dienfranchised youth of the time. The artists were easily accessible to the fans who attended the gigs.

Punk dies a quick and proper death when the major bands of the genre became rock stars in thier own right.

I think that, given the current music climate of one hit made for video sex toy wonders, a knew rebellious style of music will emerge but it will never sweep the musical landscape the way punk has. technology has made nrw music to accessible and so many genres and styles exist to make anything iniversal.

Punk is dead as we knew it.Punk bands said the things we didn't(did)want to hear and faced many reprisals. They got no radio play(perhaps some underground/pirate stations),no media exposure what so ever.Nowadays you can hear almost any profanity on any form of media.Society's values as a whole has changed. If you heard i picked your mom up and brought her to my house in a song you'd barely bat a eye nowadays. This is the reason i think punk is dead.Desensitivity so powa.

That punk is dead and can only be imitated. True?

True true true

I love how these new 'punk' bands hate conforming, rules and labels, but have this set of rules that they have to follow in order to be labeled punk.

I read this article in Guitar World written from some no-name punk band who thinks they know it all. They had Dee Dee Ramone do backup vocals on a track, and half the band was disgusted that he wore sandles, cuz sandles 'aren't punk'. Then they talked about what is punk. Apparently, if you don't wear a specific type of boots, clothes, or a diferent hair-cut, you can't be a punk. But they fail to understand that real punks weren't based on fashion, but on their frame of mind. Anyone could wear boots and leather, and apparently, you'd be a punk.

When actual punk Johnny Rotten laughs at the wannabes for wearing safety pins to be punk, because that's what the New York Times says punk is, you know they just don't get it.

Hey there,

Great thread...confuses the freck out of me...which is good. Punk in my humble opinion shouldn't be understood.

Three points; 1) Please check out my band Grampa Punk's website(www.grampapunk.com) and give me your critique. Our setlist, some mp3's and eventually some vidz'll be on there. This is a cover band in Ottawa, Canada trying to pay tribute to the early era of Punk Rock(Ramones, Clash, Costello,) as well as some of the New Wave of the late 70's early 80's. By the vary nature of punk and chaos...having a punk band deliver a performance at a venue that just served you a fabulous meal and beverages seems wrong to me by Punk standards...your thoughts?

2) My memories of the times I was over in England in the mid to late 70's were that skins were SCARY and ***holes. Trying to glamorize on people that loved chaos and would beat the living beJesus out of you for looking at them the wrong way on a bus, while they were off to fight and riot and steal and smash and loot(might sound totally extreme and bizarre but we still see it at British "football' matches). It's bizarre to try and relate when I come from such a nice a and cozy city like Ottawa. But this brings me to point 3...

3) My memories of my older brothers who were hippies(pretty much) in the late 60's(off to Woodstock, barefoot with no shoes) hitch-hiking all over the continent(people would pick you up back then), are similar in that they all were able to bond into peer groups culturally identified with their music and push the envelope to social reform(evolution really). I don't see any real difference between what were hippies(remember long hair was "WAAAYYY out there" back then) and Punks especially a little later(late 80's and early 90's), with the mohawks etc.

All this being said. The music back then technically was a production and marketing masterpiece. Typical PunkRock back then had pretty good drumming, bass playing and arrangements with screaming vengeance vocals and raunchy lousy guitaring. I think some of the later bands have actually evovled guitar technique derived from Sid's and Johnny's relentless "downpicking"...but guess what AcidRock from the 60's,Punk and to a degree RAP and even Hip Hop...is all just good ol' Rock 'N' Roll...your thoughts?

I was born and raised on punk, so I believe I'm qualified to comment...punk IS NOT DEAD...it just became something far bigger. Punk of old had one major requirement, it was rebelion, but it was a little bit "rebel with out a cause", now punk is VERY POLITICALLY ACTIVE, go to punkvoter.com if you don't believe me. And don't even say that Fat Mike and NOFX aren't real punk, they defined todays defition of punk along with bands like Minor Threat ( who's lead singer went on to Fugazi ), Circle Jerks, Bad religion, Black Flag, Dad Kennydies (esspecially the DK's!!!) So to me and most , if not all my friends punk rock is about human rights, polical reform, and social reform. And those are all very admirable things to attempt to achieve. What punk is not... A style of dress, A fad, Dying your hair, Green Day, Offspring, Sum 41, just a style of music. It's an Idea and far more...but were really just dicussing symantics and it is, as evereything , what you want it to be. The world is what you make of it. For me punk is ****ing beautiful. Hit me up if any of you girls want to talk. -cheers

Hold it now...Rancid is political, albiet at times having been mainstreamish, it's not a crime or even non-punk to make a living! Don't buy into the mainstream view of "selling out" because if you work a lame job and do the same things people always do, that my friend is true selling out. Sheepish really! Even Green Day has had it's moments of being semi-punk in ideal( and I hate them). NOFX...punk as ****!! Bad religion...punk as ****( not currently though)YOu make some good points..you just got me on the whole "rancid" thing.
-later......

Yeah ..I agree the "hipppie movement" is so similar...especially when compared to the peace loving, vegitarian/vegan , politically active "punks" of today, which I consider myself to be a part of...and no I dont wear ****ing 80's leather jackets...lol... cause' it's way more punk to be aware of were your clothing is made, how those people/animals are treated. Blah Blah ...you get the picture, todays punks have grown, thats a good thing, and the aggression is more focused, more"rebel WITH a cause' ". <(arguing politics)

Sum 41 punk?

I play regularly in a hard core punk band, and it's interesting to see all the kids dress up and act punk. I remember one time talking amongst a group of 'punks' about politics with a university professor (also in a band). No one spoke but me. I wonder what they were singing about, their girl problems or what? WTF? Damn, they're almost as bad as me!

I don't try and tell people what genre of music their band is, but I can say that our type of punk seems one of the few not to have the metal edge to it, because that's how new punk is.

And lastly, after studying it just a little bit, I believe that punk was a reaction (amongst many things) to the growing glitter pop rock and glam lifestyle that went with it. Rock was becoming....soft. So in many respects, when I hear a 'rock' band today, if it doesn't have much of a kick to it then it makes me think more of 'pop' than anything else. Punk kept alive the original rock mentality.

About our brand of punk NOT having a metal edge... bands like Bullet for My Valentine, Armor for Sleep, From First to Last, and Underoath have a metal bend to them.

And the "Rock" label I believe should be limited to the Rolling Stone, U2, Kings of Leon, etc non-punk non-alternative bands. And in spite of my name I like alot of punk, not just pop-punk, Anti-Flag is a favorite band of mine (on there split CD with the Bouncing Souls at the end they did a cover of the Buzzcocks "Falling in love with someone you shouldnt"), as are the Pinkerton Thugs, I also like some Emo (all waves not just the post-Emo you hear on the radio), and alot of Indie, and many combinations of all the mentioned.

Are you talking punk or are you talking hardcore. The two are different.
Sex Pistols and Dead Kennedys and Virus were hardcore.

The Ramones and Patty Smith were punk. Of course, now you can here Wanna Be Sedated and Patty Smith doing a Springsteen song on the radio now. But you will never hear Patty Smith doing a song "" on the radio. And you won't hear most of the Ramones music on the radio because of something called censorship (but you can still hear TheWho - "...who the f**k are you" on the radio).
