I knew when I came in here, I would expect people mentioning the obvious punk bands

I want to mention bands that deserve recognition like

The Meatmen
The ****-Ups
The Lewd
FANG
Antiseen
Dwarves
Crime
Samhain
Anti-Nowhere League
GG Allin

All I hear is Black Flag this and Sex Pistols that, there are others that made a huge impact on bands today you know!!!

Punk is anything that differs from the drab/dull boringness of the norm. It was meant as a way for youth to create a sound of their own, as an escape from mainstream media. But now the mainstream media is feeding off of the "rebelion" of punk, and you now see "punk clothing" in major department stores. As long as there are people willing to go against the grain and stand out from whatever the norm becomes, punk will always be around. Some bands recreate the simplicity of Ramones era 3-chord punk rock, while others take punk rock to a whole new level.
There are lots of great bands around in the punk rock genre, (some who've been around for decades), and it doesn't seem to be dead just yet.
As with every generation, the music you grew up with is better, (to you), than the stuff your kids are listening to. Music means different things to different people.

Punk is dead? Anything but! Its alive and just as important and relevant today....not only are there still bands going all over the world but as long as we have a bunch of idiots running the country, corruption within our local government and police service, underpayed workers throughout the world (I could keep a list going!) there will always be punk music. The world aint gunna change, so no Punk isn't dead.
Being into punk from a young age has made me more aware of things around me, punk may have evolved but its still got the venom and spirit of 1977 :-)
DIY or DIE....

Great Punk is can not be classified, but you know when you hear it. Rock is Rock in its various forms, but Punk is one of those music types that you shouldn't know its Punk, its something else that eventually becomes part of Punk. Also, it should come in waves. The second everyone in a Punk movement dresses the same, sounds the same, and refuses to accept anything that differs from the accepted norm, it stops being Punk.

I think that Punk was an important era in music history - just like the 60's hippy music and the experimental music of artists such as Jimi Hendrix and the Doors. It won't ever be duplicated, though - as many of you have mentioned - there are some awesome bands out there who are, as I put it, trying to honor their roots. 30footFALL is a great band out of Texas who have been around for years and refused to be signed because they won't compromise their sound. That's punk. The era might be dead, but the attitude isn't.

just hard to dig it up through the mainstream

where everyone wants to make money to grow old and retire.

who's saying their lives aren't worth two weeks these days

and putting it out there to spur?

anybody? anybody know?

there's still a thriving underground punk scene...bands you will never hear on the radio or see on MTV. They could be playing your city and you wouldn't even know. Just pick up a copy of Maximum Rock'n'Roll...bands like Government Warning, ****ed Up, Regulations, War Krime, Tragedy, The Observers (ok they broke up), and tons more.

it's out there...you just gotta find it.

I think any scene that came from the underground will always have that subculture. There has always been a clash about the subject ever since corporate Mtv threw generic bands towards the ever so impressionable youth back in the 90's. I could never take it serious then, I sure can't now. I agree with what Jello Biafra said in the song Chickenshit Conformist, " A hairstyle is not a lifestyle". With so many people buying their image. All you need is a major credit card, you can be anything you want to be if you can afford it.

I think one punk band that I really missed is the Subhumans. Even though Citizen Fish is a spin off from the Subhumans still not the same.

Look up the movie American Hardcore, it's a great documentary of the whole 70's punk scene including The Dead Milkmen, Bad Brains, Black Flag, etc.
As far as punk coming back.. I believe the ideals of rebellion are always there [among social opression, rebellion comes like fire], but as far as making a turning point in music.. 'been there, done that.'

I laugh at the kids who think Good Charlotte is punk. hahahaha.

Punk is practically dead now, there are still a number of bands that have kept the original punk sound but they are not getting as much attention as those crapp-so called 'punk' bands like Blink182..

What do kids today got to complain about? Kids today are so pampered and spoon fed that is not even funny. They got support groups for ever little thing, unlike the youth of yesterday. They whip out their parents credit card buy their little image which seems to be the trend these days. Not just kids, but adults as well. Real Punk I just don't know, but there will always be a place for pop punk. Since we all live in the pop culture in one form or another. Todays society is all about retro, when punk came about it was meant to be something new, and about change. I mean really it is hard to take some snot nose kid, that has to go too a hair salon , buy name brand clothes, get approved by Mtv, and call themselves punk seriously.

People's idea of what punk should be is incredibly narrow minded.

That being said, there were plenty of post 80s bands that pushed the envelop of what punk was and has become. Refused for instance set out and turned the genre on it's head sonically and lyrically with "The Shape of Punk to Come" while Bad Religion has consistently provided the masses with hardcore infused songs and articulate lyrics.

My point is, punk is still very much alive and well.

If you still don't believe me, check out Gallows and watch them rip you face off.
