Older Punk or a original era punk is what i refer to as 77 style. The Slits, Bad Brains, Circle Jerks, Sex pistols etc. I consider really anything from 89 and down 77 style punk. Anything past the garage grunge band era of the 90's I just call pop punk or in that "broken hipster emo crowd"

But what do you call the bands that sounded more old school 77 style punk and turned into the pop punk emo stuff? Like AFI original demo and 7" pressed in 91 with pudget. who turned into their new album decemberunderground (which is is just )

I think when you grew up on certain things that wasn't popular, and years later it's popular. It just doesn't seem special anymore. I never consider myself punk if anything an individual. I grew up on bands like Dead Kennedys, Clash, Circle Jerks, Black Flag, Nomeansno, Subhumans, Butthole Surfers, The Cramps, Misfits, Agnostic Front, Minor Threat, GG Allin, Fear, The Damned, and etc. I remember when Butthole Surfers got big on Mtv with their Independent Worm Saloon album, and alot of people thought they were new. They were shock to find out the band been around since the late 70's or early 80's. I always love the bands who defy the genre itself like The Cramps, Butthole Surfers, and Nomeansno.

I think along with being a british working class
rebellion against the establishment of all things
in the beginning, it is also Destructionist Art
so it will continue to be made- in vogue I don't
know.

'misfit' you are so on the money with NOMEANSNO, they are my drug of choice.I saw them in france last year twice and I am still getting over it. the last album ausfaht is just so good they playing is so intense and raw yet still coheisive great great stuff.

As for punk music in general Its my opinion that Jerry Lee Lewis,Little richard were the first punks they broke the mold and did just what they wanted, they were outthere and for the time wild as hell. So for me punk ethos has been in or arounfd in one form or another for a long time it just took the bloated wart of 70's rock to make people angry enough to spit and swear to bring it to the fore.

Of course I could be 'wrong' which is a great NOMEANS NO album!!!!!

NOMEANSNO is a great band!!! I always thought they were one of the most intelligent bands out there. I use to have several of their albums on tape, but they left Alternative Tentacles, and it seems like all their older stuff has been discontinued. So I have not been able to get it on disc. The Day Everything Became Nothing, and Small Parts Isolated and Destroyed is my favorites. I haven't had a chance to hear the last 2 albums. Their music always remind me of something out of a Kurt Vonnegut book. I really like the album they did with Jello Biafra called The Sky Is Falling And I Want My Mommy. It has one of my all time favorite songs called Rats. I kind of like their alter ego The Hanson Bros, basically Ramones songs rewritten about beer, and hockey. I find it interesting nobody talks about Iggy Pop the godfather of punk.

the last 2 months at work all I have been listening to is the hanson bros 'MY GAME' cd its their best yet. The record with Jello is gold. Have you visited nomeansno whatever .com thats their site I think you can get stuff from there i think they are reissuing all the old stuff, what about wrong for a record, mmm yeah. the new one is kinda like their old stuff but new?????

Iggy didnt even have to play any music just take his shirt off and there is punk . I love the fact that mike watt is playing bass for the stooges now there is another embodiement of punk, the minutemen easily one of the all time greats.

Oh and alice donut I just danced my way through the dishes listening to them.
punks not but it has always smelled that way......

punk is dead. you have all these bands claimin they're punk especially those mtv morons like fall out boy and so on. they dont understand what punk is, its not fashion its a lifestyle. most punks were homeless, drug addicts, just all sorts of f*cked up sh*t going on with them not this glittery pop nonsense image that they try to pass punk off as these days. so no you wont see true punk, its in the grave.

Saying Punk is dead is like saying metal is dead, stop letting the tv tell you what music is popular because that garbage is already forgotten, you see them playing shows and making music videos but they're gone once the MTV/MuchMusic channel tells the ignorant youth what the next lame fad is.

Misfits are still making music, later bands like pennywise, rancid and nofx are still making music, and all making a fine living, punk isn't dead, it's back out of the spotlight where it belongs. Meant for true fans who know where to find it.

It has never died and therefore never revived

It's time for a new rebellion. Punk was all about killing off the self-indulgent noodling dinosaurs that comprised Genesis, Led Zeppelin etc. Oh dear! They appear to be making a bit of a comeback! Quick, let's kill 'em off again and do a proper job this time.
