April-49 seconds I believe...

Baldfisher-All of us on here and your friends are right! LOL! You have to check out Pride! I love UFC too but Pride takes MMA to another level. Rules are more pure IMO, allowing kicks and knees on the ground, etc. Also like the restart in the middle. Not too mention more talented fighters IMO, UFC has some good ones too, but Pride has way more depth. Their tournaments are usually great too. If you want to know who the "Ultimate Fighter" really is, you need to see Fedor Emelianenko fight...he is the best fighter in the world IMO. April, you should check out some Pride too...if you like UFC you should like Pride.

Saiyan-You basically summed up the differences between Pride and UFC, and also why I like Pride a bit better too more or less. Good run down. I personally don't care wether it's in a ring or a cage though, I have no preference so long as there are still restarts in the middle and you can't use the cage to pin a guy.

GT99-I too would like to see more interpromotional stuff, but I think we are dreaming. One thing I think you might over estimate though is the general publics interest in seeing a match up like Liddell/Silva. As hardcore MMA fans we all of course would LOVE to see this fight, it's like maybe MMA's top dream match in some ways. Would it do huge PPV buys? I don't know...I would certainly buy it. That being said, the general public, a lot of people why buy ppv's, don't even know who Wanderlei Silva is. Some people have heard of him, but haven't really seen him fight often if at all. These same people think Chuck is the man, and often have no idea that Rampage(whom Silva has beaten twice) gave Chuck a good beating in Pride. I think it would do decent ppv buys, if it was promoted right, but I have a feeling a match up like Liddell/Ortiz 2(assuming Tito kills Kennny) would do more ppv buys and be more of a marque match up to a lot of people.
The UFC doesn't seem interested in neccessarily having the best fighters either. They never really go for it when the top guys in Pride become free agents. They could have had Silva if they really wanted him bad enough. Rampage said they never even made an offer...They could have had many others too. Anderson Silva is a good signing but generall they don't go after guys that made their rep in Pride. UFC would prefer to have people think their champs are the best in the world, and creat stars from within as opposed to signing the top free agents to see who really are the best fighters in the world. Whatever...all we can do as fans I guess is just sit back and enjoy them both for what they offer to the sport as MMA continues to grow and become more mainstream every day.

Cool to see so many into MMA, for those who havent seen much pride I would suggest going on youtube and looking some stuff up.

Here are a few of my Favorites:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PHGcdW74R44

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wU3162CboNk

Two of the best highlights I have ever seen.

I know this question wasn't posed to me but I will answer as far as who is above Liddell IMHO
Silva
Rampage
Arona
Lil Nog
Shogun
and although he has beaten him I would maybe even say Overeem, that fight was going his way till he gassed...they need to give him 2 minute rounds so the **** could keep from gassing LOL

I can't wait for the next Bushido either!! Dennis Kang is becoming a ****in pimp

kang is indeed lookin good...just wish theyd stop sayin hes from korea, hes from VANCOUVER!!!

And personally..I think Liddel is over rated....
hes got good hands and a half decent roundhouse kick, but really not a shitload of talent....hed be a journeyman in Pride. And the bushido tourneys rock! Whose gonna win the heavyweight Bushido?? Im waitin for the last 8 to get it on....
like you bigdadda, one aspect of pride i really like... is the restart in the centre of the ring. If theyd just allow elbows...

Also..Ive seen an expose on Silva... yeah, hes better than Chuck, and not the same fighter he was when he fought Ortiz... Id like to see it happen, especially to watch the..psychological war. Can Wanderlei put his past lost behind him? And Tito (watch him and forest again and see for yourself), to beat him psychologically, all ya gotta do...
is take his best shot. Something ive seen alot of in the past, esp. in boxing- one guys spirit getting broken because the other guy took his best punch.
Also..I think the ref will have to step in when Arlovski fights Silva, cuz Arlovski is really pissed, and might start eating Silvas heart when its done.

I also concur with the UFC and Dana White commentaries... the North American audience are reality-show freaks, and Dana is cashin in on that.
You want a better reality show idea?
Well... my one old instructor (who was also a well known wrassler in his day) are kinda doin our own reality-show idea. What were thinkin of doing...is taking two ordinary stiffs with NO fighting skills...he trains one, I train the other, and neither can reveal any training tactics. At the end... we scrap em.
Shit...this idea isnt that far off... from the present Ultimate Fighter! lol, ya gotta admit, theres been a few guys who were total biotches.

Last note: we occasionally get a few ladies in this forum (SWEEEEET!) but i wanted to say congrats to Chinua, who recently passed her shodan and has earned her black belt in shotokan karate!!! Kudos...you go gurl!!!!

later peeps, and please keep this forum runnin...I presently got serious cop issues and might not be back for a lil bit!!

The thing about Lidell is he is a scrapper. Pretty tough guy, obviously hits hard and also difficult to take down because of his wrestling experience. He is not "the best" at any on thing but he is pretty darn good at several. So the grapplers tend to have a pretty rough time bringing him to the ground and since he is tough another puncher will not dispose of him easily and if things are REALLY looking bad on the feet he "can" bring it to the ground if he absolutely needed to.

i agree lakeland...liddell is a scrapper and a damn good one at that....wouldn't mind having him around as a bodyguard that's for sure...lol....sounds to me like there are some great fighters coming out of pride as well but i just don't have access to it... ....you guys will just have to keep me posted....

and i'm still looking for someone to sit around and get drunk with and have fun next weekend for ppv and yell obsenities at ken shamrock...hehehehe

Who was Liddells last real opponent? Maybe his 2nd fight with Randy where he damn near took the mans eyes out but other than that he hasn't fought anyone of any signifigance since he was in Pride for the tourny. I know he fought Randy again but Cotour was in his early hundreds in that fight and was a shadow of his former self.

He has Sobral coming up but this fight will not be pretty for Babalu simply because of the style match up, I really hope Sobral works on his striking a whole hell of a lot and uses it to set up the take down...then he needs to find a way to keep Liddell down...Very tough fight for Renato.

For the woman who hasn't seen any Pride events (sorry I didn't catch your name) email me and I may be able to get you a couple DVDs if you like.

Sunday is gonna be a good day, I get my son back and I get to watch some Pride FC LOL

I was one of those who thought liddel had sloppy stiking and lucked out in his fights...not true at all.

the guy is a beast, he is a better wrestler than tito if you lok at credentials, he just doesnt use it, he has a good chin and hard punches...as sloppy as they look they land.

I have been critical of chuck for too long, not now

and his abilty to stand up after being taken down by world calss wreslters is unreal

Say what You want about ol Chuck Liddell He has a chin forged out of steel that was made in Detroit....I have seen him take some punches that would knock out a horse. that is what makes him so Dangerous He is the only UFC Fighter I like He has knock out Power a good Chin and He can grapple if He has to.

I wish He would come over to Pride Fighting He would be HUGE!!!!! and among real fighters his caliber.

That would be Kevin Randleman who used to be in the UFC and was a champ but I forget if it was HW or LHW.

Here is another one that is pretty ok

Saiyan-I agree, Pride SHOULD also allow elbows, but what can ya do? I'd like to see some kind of universal MMA rules for all organizations, but I don't see that ever happening. I would prefer soccer kicks, stomps, and elbows to be allowed in all organizations. Won't likely see UFC having kicks to a downed opponent any time soon though. It presents a negative image of the sport to some unfortunately, and UFC won't chance that. Not to mention all the bs they'd have to go through to EVER get any legit athletic commisions to accept that.
I disagree with what you say about Liddell though...a journeyman in Pride? No way IMO, though he is getting older too and could drop off any time to that level. Right now though he's at his peak, and is no doubt at least a top 5 guy in the division.

sumoyouknow-Thanks for ansering my question finally(with regards to which 5 pride light heavy's are ahead of Liddell), though Rampage is no longer with Pride. Really between the 5 you picked and Liddell, all are REALLY close in abilty IMO, and on any given night any of them could beat another I think. No way can you legitimately say Overeem should be ahead of him. Liddell beat him, and don't use the excuse about gassing, that fight only went like 4 minutes. Cardio is part of the game, and if Overeem can't keep up that's always going to work against him, just like it always has. Liddell would beat him again if the fought...he has a better chin and won't be able to submit Chuck or outlast him. Overeem is a good fighter, just not an elite fighter IMO. He beat Belfort twice, but Vitor isn't all that anyway, too inconsistent. He beat Kharitonov in a big upset IMO, but wouldn't do it again I don't think.

Because the 5 you listed and Liddell are so close in ability I think if Chuck fought them all he would likely beat some of them, but not all. Here's how I see all 5 of those fights going:
1.Liddell/Rampage-First fight could have gone either way. Same could happen if they fight again. Chuck has a better chin though, and if he came in in better shape I think he would win. Plus he's got the extra motivation of trying to avenge a loss. IMO he would do just that. He's on a roll, while Rampage has been very inconsistent of late. I see Chuck KOing Rampage if they ever fight again.
2.Liddell/Silva-Again this could go either way. Chuck has a better chin, but Wanderlei is a better all round striker with better cardio. That's why I see Wanderlei winning a unanimous decision here unless Chuck KO's him.
3.Liddell/Shogun-Wow, I would love to see this fight. I would have to pick Rua though...If Chuck didn't catch him and KO him, Rua would win for sure IMO, cause there's no way Liddell could match his pace. He would just keep on him all fight, eventually Chuck would gas, and Rua would finish him...if he didn't totally gas Rua would still win a decision IMO.
4.Liddell/Arona-I like this match up for Chuck and for me cause I dislike Arona a lot. Arona did very well against Silva in 2 fights, but Silva is not the wrestler Chuck is, and I don't think Arona would take him down as easily as he took Silva down. Thus...I see Chuck KO'ing Arona. Arona has strong leg kicks, but mostly his stand up sucks a$$. With the way he fights with his chin up in the air he's a KO waiting to happen. I would love to see Chuck knock him out too, cause I hate Arona. I think it would happen too. No way Arona gets him down, and if he does, no way he keeps him down. Chuck would KO him IMO.
5.Liddell/Little Nog-Tough fight to call. Nog is a solid technical boxer, but likely wouldn't be able to hurt Chuck. Chuck could hurt him though, but Nog does have a solid chin too. Nog has better cardio. I can't pick a winner here really...it's a weird match up. I guess I will say Chuck by KO, cause even though Nog is a solid striker, he has no power, and won't be able to take Chuck down to look for a submission, thus I see a Liddell KO happening eventually.

I guess it's a matter of opinion really as to who ranks where. I personally would have it like this though:
1.Silva
2.Liddell
3.Shogun
4.Little Nog
5.Arona
-Rampage hasn't done much lately so he doesn't rate IMO. Of course when he's on his game he could beat any of the above fighters. I put Liddell at #2 cause even though I think Rua would beat him, he hasn't, and Liddell is the UFC champ. He has beaten quality opponents like Ortiz and Couture(2x) in the UFC.

BTW, Randelman was UFC heavyweight champ back in the day, not light heavy(which was still called middleweight when he was there anyway).

Big-D.....

There was too much respect shown in their first fight
from both Men If Chuck had let the leather fly a bit more in their first meeting I think he could have easily knocked out Rampage Jackson

Ya gotta give it to Rampage Jackson though He is also a great fighter with lots to bring to the ring exciting slams and some good knock outs I hope to see more of Him soon

He is a total gentleman with other fighters he likes to hype up the fights in interview which makes Me just laugh my azz off the only fighter I saw him smack talk was Silva and We all know how that ended...

Rampage has a great chin but it just fell apart against Silvas knees, I think that says more about Silva's knee strikes than it does about Jackson's chin.

I was mostly kidding about Overeem mostly because of his always gassing but if that guy can get his shit strait then he will be a very good fighter instead of an inconsistant one as he is now.

I think you are correct about Arona possibly getting KTFO because of the way he punches but those leg kicks would take their toll on Liddell and he would either get sloppy-er with his hits giving Arona the chance to take him down or he would go in for the shoot himself just to get away from those kicks...I would very much like to see this fight. I don't really like Arona to much as a person from the interviews and such I have seen and read but as a fighter he is pretty solid.

Though this has nothing to do with Liddell I for one thing Lil Nog v Shogun was the fight of the year for '05, I know there were some very good ones but I've watched this fight about 8 times now and it just keeps getting better...I also think Nog won that fight but I did like the way it turned out cause we got to see Rua kick Ricardo's ass LOL

One more I think is better than Lidell when he fights at 205 is Yoshida.

I'll also say it's nice to be able to discuss this without it turning stupid like it would on just about any myspace board LOL

You MIGHT be able to find Pride fights on cable, esp. Rogers, if you can get to subscribe to the Fight Channel...an AWESOME new channel I watch on Canadian satelite. They were at the MMA expo as well (with some HOT ring babes lol) and they carry wicked fightin shit...even old kung fu flicks like Blood of the Dragon (hard to find shit) and lots of documentaries about MMA fighters (Ive seen ones for Gooderich, Wanderlei, kang and Newton). Speakin of Gooderich... theres one of a few who would take out liddel- hes got a tougher chin, for one thing. however, Ive seen even HIM get knocked the **** out, and so would Chuck, if hit in the ole honey spot. maybe i dont like Chuck too much... hell..i dunno why. Something... even though mosta what you Liddel fans have said is accurate. And btw for a few..Chuck DID fight in Pride, and didnt fare too well. On your top 5 Bigdadda... Chuck barely makes it there on my list. Mostly, as was said, he hasnt shown me anything recently to impress me...esp. in Pride. guess I wanna see someone who can excel in both Pride and UFC

Also...Id also LOVE to see a unified MMA format, although I kinda like the different rules...gives us more to watch, and for fighters like ME, its gotta test ..your control. One day you can elbow, the next you can soccer kick. Also...unified rules might help gettin MMA events sanctioned in Ontario.
btw GT99, and all you JJ fans... like Ive been sayin bro...Im ITCHIN to get into a MMA event, to help its evolution. Like... recently Ive been workin on a new idea for when your opponent is on his back in defence, and youre standing(I mention this, cuz this is an area, where the standing persons allowble use of strikes and kicks varies greatly from one MMA organization to the next)...I was initially workin on jumpin axe kicks (as Im sure weve seen in Pride) and rolling heel kicks to the solar plexus.. and then i came up with something better, and have been practicing it, and since you spend some time grappling...might appreciate... that I now, when standin and lookin down at a prone opponent, I take one step back... and do a full front flip over their legs into the mounted position. One time..I managed to wind my sparrin partner with my... ass when I landed.
i only mention this...to illuminate the simple fact, that, as ive been saiyan..i mean saying all along, that theres alot more shit out there to be seen, esp. since MMA is still so...young. And theres a breed out there yet to grace any type of formal fighting arena.

GSP has done alot of flips to get mount, I have done that as well, landing hard enough to wind them? cant say I can do that, tompkins trains the body alot, trust me, new guys noramlly puke fast.

it is an area alot of guys dont train enough or train correctly to take damage, I love body shots...well watch marks fight against yves...it was the liver shot that set up that traingle.

I think I know what you are talking about but I guess we will have to see how it works.

where are you training now? like I said bro, I know alot of good places in TO to train. I love BJJ and wrestling....its fun as hell, but really...you know what our club is known for...thats standing.

you might be the only one on here that can appreciate it, but dont you just love the first punch that hits you? I almost need that first shot to get me going.

anytime you wanna train let me know, sam lost his fight but GSP was down training for the fight, we have jeff curan from chicago coming down as well and mark was with eddie bravo for 3 weeks leading up to his fight with gurgel.

alot of people said it was boring, and mark is NEVER boring, but he played his gamplan right, in the UFC a win is important, seeing sam lose wasnt good and he played it safe, threw very few kicks (and he kicks like a mule) so jorge wouldnt catch the leg and take it down. Mark has a great ground game but why go down with a brazillian born black belt? play to your strength not his....besides, its not like jorge cold take mark down, he tried and failed

also see robs fight? that was a nice armbar...at 205 rob will be a beast

Sean Pierson (from Shah Franco, and also wrestles for Brock University) used to do that move when he was fighting in the early UCCs. at that time, he'd drop by my gym all the time and was showing everyone that move... and yes, he winded the fcuk outta me! I wonder what he's up to these days.... i've been out of the game for too long!

yeah... its one of a few moves ive really yet seen in MMA, and something trhat just kinda happened trainin, ya know?
As for present training... im a true journeyman. Hell...who cares if you guys now what I do....
Ive been sneakin off to karate again, in a different ryu to what I trained in...mostly f*ckin around with sword stuff (Im currently lookin for a good katana and my instructor has a strong background in Nihon Daito Ryu Aikibudo as well). During the weekends, I either train with an ex pro wrestler who was called mad mountain rock or maxx payne...hes trained me on and off since I was 8, and loves my mommas carrot juice lol), i also mess around with my BJJ blackbelt homie Chris Cholette, a fellow 205 fighter (hes currently at 235 lol..the cow, and his short legs made the flip-mount easy lol-hes also my manager and MMA conduit). I was messin around Glenroy Brownes gym...but we have a long TKD history, and ...well thats another matter. Hes a really rounded guy, and gets big hard strikers to pound the crap outta me (I dont spar with them though... way too slow). last nite i wa out to 5 am cuz an ole friend was down from BC...he has a serious amateur wrestlin background, and has done some MMA and underground fightin at 155 lb. We might link up soon. Also, sundays are judo day for me, if Im not out on a long cycle ride. I try to stay..outta the conventional dojo. Last month I got ahold of another old friend, and touched up on some Capoeira down on the beach.
Last nite... 2 guys were dudes I used to bounce with (one..I ALMOST literally KILLED by accident- was scary watchin him get operated on- and the other was a co-student when I was all about judo) and i were talkin about justin bruckmanns school, but Shyan told me...he knows us both, and that Justin would be nothing more than a light snack for me. Stupid thinkin cuz im interested in learnin, practicing, and gettin comnnected to the MMA world...not flexin egoes. Also...rob the wressler was tellin me...out in BC at least... ALOT of MMA guys... have never even been in a street fight. Sorry, but AGAIN, in my circles, MMA and most martial arts guys.... dont get kudos ( we were laughing last night... about suffering from "tysonitis", and wondered who amongst us..has bitten off the most body parts.)
funny too GT99..we were all talkin about the rush..of gettin your bells wrung. Maxx ...he'll spin me around for like 3 minutes, then bash my head in with a pillow, and then take me down and force me to grapple with my head all twisted. its a weird... slightly paro...high I guess, and, like griffin seems to thrive by...it wakes you up and lets you KNOW its ON!! I was almost addicted to it, and for awhile was lettin guys get in their best shot before snapping. I was tellin my close friend on how to beat Tito (who he likes alot). Id just stand there and let him pound the shit outta me, and hopefully survive his hardest shots. then...itd be my turn. I already have seen and..smelled tito (Ive seen ALOT of his fights) and know breakin his confidence, his spirit, and his pace is how to demolish him permanently. Hey..maybe hed break my jaw, ribs or skull (my skulls been fractured twice, jaw once, ribs 9 times), but who cares? I heal!! And as you know...the body gets used to stuff. So the more I get beat up, the more accustomed to it I get...to the point of relishing it. last nite I was wonderin how many times id have to get tasered before I became immune to that!

So... Brock U still produces wrestlers??? Very cool!!

And ..it sounds like i need to make my way down to london! i was sooo pissed that I didnt fight a few weeks ago.... GT...do you know of any upcoming BJJ open events in the near future? last one...had only gi competition (my gi is still gettin embroidered with my sponsors tags) so Im lookin for non-gi events. Any info would be much appreciated!!

Well... judo is at 1 pm so I gotta run!!!
