I just found this thread, and in an effort to appear no more ignorant than necessary when posting (we shall see how well I succeeded), I have read this all the way through -- a feat of concentration and willpower which I believe should earn me 1,000 mystic mountaintop monastic master points.

I would have liked to have commented on many of the posts when they were current, but for now I will just confine myself to one question and one observation:

First, why did the name of the thread change from 'UFC and Mix Martial Arts' to 'The art of Energy Manipulation', seemingly on July 12th ?

Second, on 6/10/2005, saiyen 1 writes

....Judo matches are won by a three-second pinning of both shoulders after taking you opponent to the ground.....

and on 7/2/2006 he writes

....sundays are judo day for me.....

I must point out that the shortest period of time for which a contestant in a judo match can score any points with Osaekomi-waza is 10 seconds....

http://www.ijf.org/rule/rule_referee.php#Koka

....and there is no requirement to pin both shoulders.

Looks like this forums died... ill be back to check around the next time a PPV event comes on... and maybe I can get some opinions on the IFC and their unique team-vs-team gformat... i recently saw a team coached by Maurice barely beat a team coached by Renzo....
But... for now... back to watchin Baki the Grappler!!

Wooo hoooooo. The pride open weight grand prix is on tonight. Pride kicks ass and is the #1 MMA org on the planet.

Anyone want to place any bets on the fights?? Friendly bets of course. For the two main bouts.

- Cro Cop vs. Wanderlei Silva -

The battle of the strikers. Cro-Cop an ex K1 fighter with the left high kick of death, and Wandy with his strong Muay Thai knees. Two ways I see this going I'll take Cro Cop by second round tko and if it goes past the second round Wandy will win because he's got a deeper gas tank and Cro-Cops nose is so badly broken he has to mouth breath which tires you out.

- Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira vs. Josh Barnett -

The battle of the ground fighters. Nog has adapted BJJ to mixed martial arts better than any fighter around and he's got a cast iron head. Top that off with the fact that he's never been submisioned and once held the Pride heavy weight belt and it's pretty hard to not go with him for the win. Josh Barnett and his catch wrestling style has been very dominant and once earned him the UFC heavyweight belt. Though not quite so prestigious as the Pride belt it's a big accomplishment. Also Barnett is in the best shape of his life and is the better wrestler. This fight comes up pretty equal on the ground but Barnett is the heavier and the stronger of the two and I see him taking the top position on the ground which is going to sap alot of energy out of Nog simply trying to stay active and move Barnett around from the bottom. Two ways I see this fight happening as well. If it goes to a decision it will go to Barnett and this is the most likely scenario for the reasons I stated. He's bigger stronger and he'll be on top most of the fight. This fight won't be won in the standup as Nogs head is too hard and these guys are ground specialists anyways. The other option is Nog catching Barnett in a mistake and slipping one of his slick BJJ submissions on him.

The winner of these two matches will then fight each other for the grand prix belt and the honor of challenging the premier MMA fighter on the planet Fedor Emelianenko for the Pride Heavyweight Belt. Fedor is a monster of a fighter. Undoubtedly the best there is in the sport. He's fought the very best heavyweights the world has to offer and remains undefeated in combat. The only blemish on his fight record is a fight that was stopped 46 seconds into the first round due to a cut opened over Fedors eye. Due to the fact that it was a tournement style match it couldn't be ruled a "no contest" as one fighter from the match would have to advance. Therefore it was scored as a loss, thoug it wasn't a loss in combat.

Anyone else looking as forward to this grand prix as me?? Any thoughts on my predictions??

By the way. To correct or update a few things I read in the recent pages of this forum. Liddell vs. Silva is off. It was never actually signed so I don't know why Dana White did the big announcement thing and state they had Silva for 3 fights in the UFC. The UFC was unable to come to an agreement with Pride to either buy out the remainder of Silva's contract or come to an agreement on a price to rent him, so to speak, for one or more fights. Silva currently remains a Pride fighter only.
This is a sad thing. A Chuck Liddell / Wanderlei Silva fight would be a huge draw and a spectacle. The two most dominant LHW's and beltholders from the two biggest orgs. It's something everyone wants to see.

Secondly Matt Hughes vs. George St.Pierre is off due to a pulled groin

Lastly Rickson gracie coming out of retirement to fight Sakurabe is pure rumour. Rickson is 48 now I believe and it's almost totally impossible that he'd come out of retirement most likely to be embarrassed against the new breed of fighters. Also the type of money he asks for makes the fight prohibitively expensive. He wants cash in the "millions" of dollars range to come back to the ring. The kind of money they make in pro boxing which has the viewership and network money behind those fees. Nobody is going to arrange a fight for a loss of money just to see Rickson back in his togs again. You can pretty much count on it too that Rickson knows this. It's likely one of the reasons he asks for so much. At his age, you can count on him not being in too big a hurry to put his unblemished record on the line with the new breed of fighters. Particularly one who has beating all his siblings and is called the gracie hunter. I'm a fan of Ricksons for sure, and he's an absolute legend of the sport but MMA has come along so far since he dominated in the mid 90's the sport is nearly unreconisable to it's predecessors. Look at another legend of the early sport, Ken Shamrock and how poorly he matches up with todays fighters. He rarely ever makes it out of the first round anymore and is completely outclassed because he hasn't been able to grow with the sport.

Anyways. Lets try to get this forum up and running again.

Great post Kate. I realize that I am coming in kind of late, but better later than never I always say. I train in various form of martial (combat) arts about North America. Key is training with egos left outside the dojo. Even if I could kick someone's butt, I would never say it. It does not count until it happens. And, even if it were to happen, the rematch may not go the same way.

Three of my homies from my former IMAA Academy fight in the UFC. Now tell me (everyone), who thought my boy Matt Serra was going to upset GSP, let alone make it a tough match? I obviously pulled for him, but I would never have bet on a Serra KO. Hence, as I always say.....you never know until you go.

Weight classes are essential. For self defense, you have to learn to handle all shapes and sizes (to be prepared to handle those who are usually untrained). In competition, the closer the physical match up and training level, the fairer the match. Congrats with your BJJ progress.

The UFC is gaining tons of competition. Some are showing MMA on free television. It will be interesting to witness the future of MMA, to see it unfold before our very eyes. When it becomes mainstream, you have to believe that our common networks will take it over. Meanwhile, sit back and enjoy the ride.

KIA!
John

Ps- I am still waiting for the Matt Serra Matt Hughes match, any latest on that? I thought there s/b another Matt Hughes v GSP fight, then Matt Serra takes on the winner. If Matt Hughes still had the belt and lost to Matt Serra then there s/b a rematch, but GSP hardly had the belt and who is to say that Matt Hughes deserves the first shot at it over GSP? That's my 2cents.

Speaking of arm bar tactics, Anyone else see Yushin Okami submitting Rich Franklin later this month? I can see it happening.

Almost happened in round three. Okami took far to long to get going, imo.

So what do people think about the upcomming TUF finals tomorrow night?

Personally I think if BJ has trained properly and not slacked off like he does for seemingly every fight he can take Pulver. I think if BJ could get his head back into it he could make a serious run for the LW title. Hell I'm not even that big of a BJ fan, but I think he still has the tools and talent to be one of the top LW's in the UFC. I like Pulver I just don't see him winning this one tomorrow night.

My thoughts on the Manny/Nate fight? Tough call but I'm calling Manny in an upset. I'm thinking submission victory in the 2nd by Manny. But really you could toss up a coin for this one, I think it'll be a good fight.

So does the winner of this season get an immediate title shot like the last TUF season? Will the winner of Penn/Pulver get one? Or is this season just for hype for the LW division?

I was quite impressed with Penn last night. I honestly expected him to gas out early like he did with Huges but he was in good shape last night. Now if he can only keep this up in the welterweight class, he'll be contention material again.

Though i was disappointed with the lightweight finals. To win on the grounds the opponents shoulder popping out was kinda a let down. From the sounds of it, it pops out often, a bad thing if you want to be in MMA.

My whole life I have been more interested in individual sports from martail arts to skateboarding/snowboarding. I have no idea why but I was never a fan of watching or playing any of the traditional sports in our society

I'm waiting to see if UFC president will make good on his promise to give 147lbs. boxing champ Kermit Cintron a fair (by boxing standards) offer and challenge to fight UFC champ Sean Sherk. Cintron should be able to gain the extra 8-10 lbs (sherk often wieghs more than the listed 155lbs)comfortably if given enough time. During that time he can brush up and improve his grappling skills and perhaps learn some new Muay Thai and PKA style strikes forbidden in boxing.

I'd pick Cintron by KO.

Another fight I'd like to see is boxer/puncher Vitali Klitschko against Fedor....could be interesting if done in Pride after he retires AGAIN from the MUCH more lucrative field of boxing. It would be a HUGE draw dispite Vitali not being a champion and being retired from boxing. Perhaps both fighters could get a couple of million apeice....certainly that would far exceed any purse Fedor has gotten so far.

I'd pick Fedor...but Klitschko would have a huge puncher's chance.

cintron can't fight sherk anymore....sherk's suspended for a year and lost the belt because he tested positive for a banned substance

plus boxers never do well in mma or kickboxing...lol this one k1 fight i was watching this really respected pro boxer got pwned by a mediocre kickboxer...the muay thai guy just kicked his leg hardcore till he couldn't walk anymore....never even got punched once....plus cintron has an all-state wrestling background so it;s not really a straight boxer versus mixed martial artist

Name the fighter. ANY well respected fighter would NOT fight in K1 for 1 simple reason...MONEY. There is simply not enough money(or rather hasn't been) in K1 to make a "well respected" boxer wish to fight K1. Can you imagine risking $500k to fight k1 and make 50?
Shrk being dirty certainly cast a bad shadow over UFC.
not really a straight boxer versus mixed martial artist
You won't find a man who will state to another just as big; "you may use your feet, hands, holds, elbows, ect and I'll just use my hands. The straight boxer ONLY being allowed to use marquis of queensbury rules vs someone who had NO or few rules analogy is like asking a soccer team to play american Football with only the Americans being able to tackle, hold and run with and pass the ball by hand.

I disagree,I hold several blackbelts and enjoy cage fighting..obviously its not like fighting on the streets and you do not intend to seriously hurt or kill your opponent...but many of the submissions would be fatal if tapping was not an option. It is an interesting prospect to try to ascertain which style is the most effective...obviously given rules there is no definitive way to prove which style is best.Getting on here and stating that you could kill Tito or chuck is ludicrous....anyone who is a real martial artist wouldn't even have those thoughts. You sound like a wanna be ninja..by chance did you study ninjitsu?....lol you must not watch much mixed martial arts..there are world champion martial artist, in many different disciplines that engage in cage fighting...

my last post was in response to this:
have watched EVERY UFC very closely and evaluated every top fighter. Im not overly impressed.
Comparing it to the WWE is senseless... I have a good friend in the WWE and...its acting and entertainment. UFC is real scrapping. This, at least, I like. However, our experiences invariably dictate our opinions, and those that dont know better simply because of lack of exposure and nescience to real martial arts think the UFC is the bomb, which it...is not. UFC is entertaining... but certainly a far cry from a kumite, for example. UFC guys are certainly in awesome shape...but in the greater scheme of things, they are mediocre at best. You will never see the top echelon of whats out there by watching a UFC match. Thats a place where a master, a dan, a true sensi might send a STUDENT to fight as a part of his development... but in NO WAY is the UFC (or the pride series, or shoot wrestling tourneys) the top of the pile... well maybe the top of the mediocre pile.
There are different levels (even levels within each level)... let me share with y'all what they are:
-scrappers. Guys who can fight, like to fight, have the natural knack for it, but are untrained...
-martial artists. Someone whose training in a specific dicipline teaching them how to attack and defend using a system developed through the restraints and dynamics of the human physique, and geography
-warrior. Basically a combination of the first two, someone who has the heart, skill, and EXPERIENCE to fight.
- a martialist. Me. And a few others out there. We hide in dark places. We do not like to be seen. We battle with sanity on a daily basis. We are not trained to fight. We are trained to kill. Ask, and I can be more specific. Much more.

So yeah when I watch a UFC event...Im smiling, cuz..Im wondering to myself... how many seconds would it take to eliminate Tito... and then Liddel, and then Couture. Guess it would depend.. on whose rules were playing by!
Hope y'all continue to enjoy UFC..Im glad its bringing mixed martial arts to light fo the peons, but remember, youre only watchin the tip of the iceberg...
and you dont see lions fighting hyenas for sport, fun, money or fame.

The Klitscho brothers have alway made me wonder... how can a man be so big, and so strong, and yet crumble so easily from a punch. It's sad.

The heavy-weight division in boxing is so... ummm... "open" right now that it's difficult to take any interest in.

AFAIK Sherk has yet to be suspended since he just got an extension on his hearing as did Baroni. If you have other info though please do share =]

If Sherk truly is innocent then I can understand him wanting to fight it but if there is even the most remote chance of him coming back dirty then this will only exacerbate the roid situation in MMA.
