| | HOT Halloween Party @ Havana Nights, Ajax, October 29thPage 2 of 2 (1, 2) | honestly, there's nothing wrong. I think a lot of people are going to go to the Halloween parties on the 28th planned in London and Oshawa, which is fine...but some people can't go to two events the same weekend. I can't go to those ones but if I could, I probably wouldn't do this one...or I may choose this one over that one. I think it's all a matter of money really.
Don't take it personally! | |

| HOT Halloween Party @ Havana Nights, Ajax, October 29th Posted: 10/19/2005 10:19:22 PM | Here's my rationale behind my fundraiser:
Please...Support My Journey
The Weekend to End Breast Cancer is a two-day, 60-kilometre walk through the neighbourhoods of Toronto, taking place September 8-10, 2006.
Proceeds benefit the Princess Margaret Hospital, funding important breast cancer research, education, services and care.
In the inaugural year I volunteered at the Weekend to End Breast Cancer. I had wanted to participate, walking the 60 kilometres, but I was too intimidated by the daunting task of raising $2000.00. So, instead, I thought, well, I can't support this event financially, but I can give my time. I volunteered each day, working to complete lists, handout goodies, encourage walkers, and work behind the scenes.
Saturday morning I woke up at 4:00 to begin my shift at 4:30. I stood in front of the National Trade Centre with my teammate, Sal, from 5 to 7:15 a.m. At 7:15 we headed in as the Opening Ceremonies were underway, we could hear their cheers of anticipation.
Sal and I headed out to the Band Shell just in time to see the participants getting under way. I watched from the grassy boulevard, as the walkers started on their two-day journey. A young family caught my attention. The woman gave her husband a kiss good-bye and reached down to caress the head of her infant, sleeping in the stroller. She repeated this once again. I pointed out this touching moment to Sal.
Then, I watched as a woman rested her head on the supportive shoulder of her husband, while he walked their yellow Labrador retriever. Tears silently fell from her eyes as she proudly carried the picture of a loved one on her back. I stood, trying to hold back tears of my own.
As the final walkers departed Sal and I turned to each other to say goodbye. We parted ways saying that we’d see each other tomorrow. As I walked back through the building, I was thanked, yet again, by one of the staff, Mark, I headed out to my car to drive home. I passed a woman, obviously touched by cancer holding a young child. I watched as she hugged and kissed the little one goodbye.
I remembered how grateful I was that my own grandmother, Helen Knott, had survived breast cancer 25 years ago. My “nana” has played an amazing role in my life and I couldn’t have imagined it without her.
Driving away from the CNE grounds I watched as this crowd of 4000 began their two-day journey. I was proud of these men and women. I vowed that next year I would join them, and I began to brainstorm how I too could raise the $2000.00 to participate in the Weekend to End Breast Cancer.
