| Are pets as important as people? Posted: 1/5/2006 10:46:52 AM | @ConfuciusSays: That is so great to know another persons perspective here. So you animal lovers who say pets are just as important are placing the same value on something that will serve its purpose for what? A regular house hold pet might live to be 10 maybe 20 years tops? Unless you get a parrot which might outlast your ability to take care of the bird and have to pass it on. If you place the same value on a pet as your child or siblings or parents, that would be dishonoring your family roots. Also even more important, you must first give praise to the one that gave you life. So that is why it would be unbalanced if you are giving all the praise to an object that came into existence from a cat family. Cat worship is not anything new, it was that way in Egyptian times as well. Now I am not saying anyone here would worship a cat, but saying they are just as important is drawing a thin line...
So saying you value both equally, which would be the same as saying they are equal to each other, just as important... is just unthankfulness on your part. At least in my mind it is and some of the posters who have a good grasp on what is more important which is your direct family. Not your friends, not your pets, but your own flesh and blood.

| Are pets as important as people? Posted: 1/5/2006 11:10:18 AM | The only pet I ever owned in my life was a goldfish...
Perhaps it was the way I was raised or a cultural thing, but I'm just not a big animal lover... I grew up in a Jamaican household and my parents believed pets to be unclean and as such, things that weren't allowed inside the home. Plus I'm moderately allergic to cats so that doesn't help While certain animals such as dogs and cats can exhibit their own personality traits and possess cute little mannerisms, I do not believe them to be as important as people (though I don't hold most humans in high regard either ).
I can certainly understand why someone may like animals, something to pick up and play with, something waiting for you when you get home... But when you start buying it specialty outfits, booking special hotel accomodations for it and kissing it on the lips I start to think you have issues
It's an animal - incapable of higher reasoning, and I'm still on the fence as to the depth of feelings they possess. Though I am against unwarranted cruelty towards them, I do not believe their survival ranks above our own: there is a food chain for a reason and mankind has developed the tools to secure the top spot (whoever said we had to fight fair ). So while I would do my best to avoid running down a stray dog in the street, I would not wrap my car around a Redwood just to avoid hitting it...

| Are pets as important as people? Posted: 1/5/2006 12:17:29 PM | I've really enjoyed reading this thread for the past hour. Yes it has gotten a little rough but pet's, politics and the Pope will do that.
Pet's have a important role in society. They provide security, warmth, love, service, loyalty etc. All are I believe to be fundamental's of society. They are wonderful but like most people, I realize that human's come first.
Unexpected circumstances resulted in me owning a 5 month border collie. Now I already have a BC mix who is ten. I sure learned alot from the Liam and so far Mick has been a real treat.
I love my dog's like crazy.

| Are pets as important as people? Posted: 1/5/2006 8:00:17 PM | I love my pets, my dog rocks and my horses are AWESOME - they make me sane . . . HOWEVER, I would never, ever go so far as to say I love them more than my children. Spouse, yes - children, NO WAY.
The reason that you love your dog more than people in general is because of their inability to "hurt" you. You have no trust in people at all -- otherwise you would never replace the touch of a human you love with the touch of a dog.
I truly understand loving pets, don't misunderstand - I sacrifice SOOOO much to keep my horses, you have no idea. But I would never ever compare the love I have for my horses to the love I have for my children. On the priority list, they come behind my kids, but they do come before any man I've met in the last several years at this stage in the game!!
If you don't have children, then you can't understand -- but take the love you have for your dog and multiply it times 100. Then you might have an idea.
Good luck with your pooch!! :-)

| Are pets as important as people? Posted: 1/5/2006 8:31:50 PM | SAN FRANCISCO (Reuters) - A California couple left their 5- and 9-year-old children home alone for the weekend while they went to gamble in Las Vegas. Police said the parents could be charged with child neglect but have not been able to interview the couple in person because bad weather was delaying their return from Las Vegas until Wednesday.
The couple went to Las Vegas on Friday, leaving the children cereal to eat and the father's cell phone number to call in an emergency.
Their apparent hope that, in the words of the city's tourism advertisements, what happens in Las Vegas should stay in Las Vegas went awry when one of their mothers called their home on New Year's Eve and became concerned that no adult was present, said Brian Kilinowski, investigation supervisor for the San Ramon police south of San Francisco.
The children, who ate cereal for breakfast and frozen foods heated in a microwave for other meals, were unharmed.
But these people arranged for a dog sitter for their new puppies they had given each other for Christmas. PRICELESS!

| Are pets as important as people? Posted: 1/5/2006 8:58:18 PM | | I heard all about this story this morning.... did they not even worry about the house catching on fire??? Also, the 8 year old boy was responsible for his 5 year old "autistic" brother!!! Those parents should ahve rented a friggin car and got their butts HOME!! Also, you have to wonder WHY the maternal grandmother wasn't asked to keep the kids in the first place. I'm curious to find out how this turns out. The woman was a "step" mother, the boys real mother had passed away a couple of years ago, therefore in my humble opinion that stupid SOB of a father was just trying to apease his new wife!!! It was HER mother who took in the puppies, if she married that man... then why wouldn't her mother have offered to keep the boys for them? IT sounds completely screwed up to me. | |

I have never said all pets/animals are more important than all people. I just wanted you to understand WHY some people consider them that way.
I get very angry at how people treat children, old people and handicapped people. Some people do not deserve children... and some people do not deserve pets... I'm so precious however.. I deserve everything... lol.. just ask me...

| Are pets as important as people? Posted: 1/14/2006 9:35:25 AM | They do not sweat and whine about their condition
wait a minuite.. most dogs whine ... especially when you leave them behind. [dogs get serious seperation anxiety due to being pack animals] true they don't sweat but that panting can drive you crazy at times , especially hounds that have that drool thing happening.
Don't get me wrong... I love dogs... man's only friend at times. a true loyal no questions asked friend and more than happy to be a constant companion. I went everywhere with my dog when he was able. One for 8 years and one for 15.
Now the love thing... well its so easy to love a dog ... and yes I cried for my dog but still he was a dog .. and dogs will be dogs and are dogs and it is best not to anthropomorphize them. Yes I gave my dogs human names and they were family but still not more important than humans. Though they were more dear to me than most human. Keep your perspective is all I can advise and remember like boys will be boys.... dogs will be dogs.
Enjoy and guide and protect your new best friend.

| Are pets as important as people? Posted: 1/14/2006 9:57:36 AM | I love all of our pets. (yes, even the cats!)
We have a wonderful golden retriever (mix), and 3 cats. They all have their own personality, and are a joy to have in the house.
They are great companionship and we take good care of them. But are they as important as people? I don't think so... (But they are good listeners!)

Pet owners who love animals more than people are a disgrace to our species. And with a statement such as this, is it any wonder some people do love pets more? Wondering what "species" you are refering to, since you don't seem to fall under the human or animal one.
