Well I just have to ad.... it really depends on the people and the pets.
Some pets like Lassie are more important than some people like Paul Bernado.
so like most thing on these forums... its relative
and I don't mean uncle Bob

No but that is to say that a pet can be a grat litmus for how they will trat you! After all if a woman or man will mistrat an animal for no reason you are probably NEXT!

Animals are so much less than human beings

What a ridiculous statement. So much less in that they guide the blind/deaf,rescue and serve on police forces putting their lives at risk daily for humans, bring new life to the elderly in homes, therapy for incapacitated people, and the list goes on and on. So much less??? Not even close.

It is a known fact that if you mistreat a dog you are just as likely to mistreat a human. Animals have the same basic needs as humans. In that way we are alike. Most animals love unconditionally(not inluding bugs, or anything that leads a solitary life), even if they are vicious(humans can be too), they have one or two people/animals they are inseperable from. In that way we are alike. But pets dont ask for anything past their basic needs and maybe a little petting now and then. Most of the time they give more then they get. Animals are above people in ways, they can't make machines or guns but have their ways of living. And so far animals have not started a war. I would choose a dog over a human anyday, because as long as you love and care for that dog they will never leave. And I could never be with a guy that didnt love animals. Oh and dogs can learn to smile. A poodle did. The owner returned her to the breeder cuz she thought the dog was vicious. Turns out the dog wasn't bearing her teeth, but just trying to smile, like a human.

biologically, humans and animals are in the same... family....Damn, I hate when I can't remember my science stuff.

Anyway - we's all mammals. And some are higher on the food chain than we are. Others are lower. Should I ever meet a Grizz on the hiking trail, I'll try to keep in mind that I'm so much more than he is...

but somehow I don't think he'll really care.

I think I"m well on the way of having a sanctuary for animals... I have pets other people couldn't take care of, didn't want anymore or I found on the highway. I have plenty of room and have to really make myself stop at some point, I can't take care of all the strays so I just do what I can. I usually try and find homes for dogs, but right now I'm stuck with 4 of my own.. no regrets...

mesnafugal:

nice to read about other people opening their hearts to the animals that are abandoned
by the humans in this world. Have been in the same situation but mine is with cats. have
taken in numerous ones (at different times in my life). Some have arrived ill, needing emergency care, some have been so terrified of touch, and so very frightened. Not once did i ever give up on any of them. Some people would say to me, why do you bother, look at the cat, its sick, its deformed, etc. My reply to them is that just because its an animal, we are suposed to give up. I dont think so!!

Sometimes the cats that i have taken in that were in need of emergency care turned out to be wholesome cats and lived a long time. The ones that were afraid of the human hand, eventually become not afraid, it takes time but it has all been worth it for me.

If i can make a difference in the world, and it is with animals, then that is my calling.
If i had the finances and the land then where you would find me is outside or inside
with the animals that others dont seem to want anymore, or whatever the reason may be.

I am in the same predicament as you are, where i just cant take anymore in to help. Therefore i do what i can with the ones i have right now.

Encouraging to read that there are alot of us out there in the world that open our hearts and our souls to such beautiful creatures of this world, no matter if its a dog, a cat, a raccoon, whatever the animal may be.

All animals whether domesticated or wild are just as important in this world as humans are!!

Ask any person that has animals for company,
to them their animals are one of the most important things in their world, just like people with children, they are their children to.
so everyone has their own opinion.

Its not fair to say an animal is not as important! as we are all on this earth,
so we all have our significance.
I must say thou, id choose my animals over certain people anyday, but hey! thats
just my opinion...

Subject: Are pets as important as people?
Message: Last year went to the humane society to get a dog, a large dog, in an attempt to replace my long-departed Briard my daughter had given to me as a pup years ago. Instead of large, I was adopted by a little Jack Russel mixed terrier and we've become inseparable. He's no substitute for humans but I now understand Walt Whitman's line "I think I could turn and live with animals. They do not sweat and whine about their condition ..."

Why is it we love animals so much?
Do some people care more about their pets than their spouse or children?
Can you love a pet too much?

I don't think the Enquirer or Star has yet covered this topic (this is where I get all my information)

I did not read all the post in here cuz when it comes down to the subject on pets I know to well about you see I had a dog his name is Lucky my heart my soul my baby boy anything he wanted I got for him lol what I think he needs. it was very tough on me when I had to give him up you see when he was a newborn pup I took him out the birth bag clip the cord and he was with me since every I went he went for his birthday 3 years ago I bought him a t bone. 2 years ago I had to give him up over something silly cuz of a landlord did not want to do his job. But my baby is very happy in his new home but it kills me cuz I want him here with me. pets are some times better to have around then humans they look up at you with such loveing eyes and it get you right in the heart in away that humans can't do. Thats why we love them so when you cry they run up into your arms and it is like they say don't cry I am here for you or when you are not feeling up to your best it is like they say everything is going to be ok they will sit with you until you feel better they will never leave yourside. when your sad they will do anything it takes to make you smile or they are there when they think you need that hug. thats why pets well dogs mostly tho are so important in our lives then humans. well I gotta go yall have a nice day.

YES! SO much less. If there is a baby and a dog in a burning house you should not have to decide which to rescue first!

That being said I like my dogs better than most people.

I am an Animal lover, having grown up with all Animals. Our Family for generations has bred Horses and Dogs.I have rescued, reabilitated and rehomed many Horses and Dogs.
Yes Animals are very inportant and serve in many roles for us such as Guide Dogs,Theraphy Dogs,Watch Dogs,Stock Dogs,Personal Protection,Saddle Horses,Pack Horses,Riding for the Disabled and many other Ways.
The truth is though we as Humans have a higher intellect and reasoning than Animals for a reason. If Animals and Humans were meant to be on the same level then we would all have the same level of Intellect and reasoning.
I can called in to advise People on problems they are having with their Animals. So Many times the Problem/s go back to the Owner Humanising an Animal with is a Distortion of the Animals natural Psychology. How would a Human cope if they were Animalised{Treated like an Animal}the Human would not cope well at all as their natural Psychology of being Human is not being taken into account.
I love my Animals as much as anybody but yes ask yourself this Question. In a Life threatening situation, there needing to be rescued is a Dog or Cat and your Mother,Son,Daughter,Father or Aunt.Who are are you going to rescue?

I don't think you can love a pet too much...animals are sweet, and deserve lots of love. I've never been much of a people-person. I like some people--I love my family... but...alot of people just get on my nerves and I don't want to be around most people. I have alot more patience with animals than I do with people.

Exactly. Don't call me when your 'baby' bites a kid. I breed, train and show chow chows and Siberian huskies and I know exactly what you mean. When I get an inquiry from a person who tells me they are owned by their dog, or, their dogs are their children I cringe. I also tell them I will not sell them a chow. They are ANIMALS!

I would rescue both. I could not live with myself if I let my dog or any other dog for that matter burn to death. Of course, a baby can't go without being carried out and the dog can walk unless they passed out already.

I have tried to love humans unconditionally but they just took advantage of me, but I guess that's conditional because I didn't love them after that. I can say I love my dog unconditionally.

Amen! Even if I had to carry both, one under each arm & out I'd go.
