| Are pets as important as people? Posted: 10/15/2005 7:48:33 PM | | My dog is definitely a huge part of my life. The thing about animals is that their love is unconditional and their lives are entirely dependent on you, not unlike a small child in many ways. Thus, the relationship that developes is a very special one. Can you carry this too far? Of course. But, I will admit that there isn't much I wouldn't do to keep my dog healthy and happy. As someone else said, it is about balance, ultimately. | |

With men it's: Oh you've been gone to work? I didn't notice.
LOL!
Dogs also sense when you're running on "low power"...at least, mine does. He can tell if I'm blue, and gets more attentive...god forbid that I cry. I've got a head the size of a basketball AND most of his upper body in my lap. Wish he could hug...I can tell he wants to...LOL.

| Are pets as important as people? Posted: 10/15/2005 8:28:24 PM | Thor fits his "little head" pretty much any damned place he wants it, unless you supress him with a wrestling take-down move of some sort...LOL!
That's WHY he's as important as the people in my life...he's still there when THEY get to be too much for me, and he reminds me to never be too serious. He reminds me to play, occasionally. He reminds me that I can't give up, because there are others who rely on me. And always, he reminds me that I'm loved.
Sorry, HB...pensive evening. Great topic, though, huh?

| Are pets as important as people? Posted: 10/15/2005 8:29:11 PM | | I'm becomming depressed that you ladies prefer your pets to men. I think I need my Dawg now. "come 'ere boy". I've decided, I'm coming back next time as a Golden Retriever - beautiful animals, smart, trainable, not too big/not too small, good personality. Woof! | |

It's been a pensive day for me.....

| Are pets as important as people? Posted: 10/15/2005 8:32:08 PM | | Although our animals our very important to us and we would be hard pressed to give any up, they pale in comparison to the few good people we associate ourselves with. Whether it's my daughters chihuahua, the horses we've had since birth, or the various other critters that call the back 40 home. They are always there to pick us up on a cloudy day, and the time spent with them is valued beyond measure. But I rarely have to shovel my kids rooms out, they never make a booboo on the floor, and have yet to bite, kick, or charge at me. (Although, granted they may have entertained it breifly on occasion) It sounds as though the grade of people you have around you might need to be elevated above that of an animal. I don't think you could ever show a good animal to much (platonic) love. Yet as wonderful as they can be, to hear my kids say I love you daddy can't be topped by any trick they know, and I sure as hell don't want to hear that from one of them. | |

| Are pets as important as people? Posted: 10/15/2005 8:36:54 PM | No I don't prefer Fred to a man in my life...but he's the one there for me 24/7.
And yes my kids mean the world to me but as teens they have their own lives too.
My oldest is emancipated and doing the school/work thing same as I am.
Yes I do look forward to having Fred's paws on my knees and a man's arms around me when I come home, but it simply isn't that way right now.

| Are pets as important as people? Posted: 10/15/2005 8:45:19 PM | | Agreed Lyny. There's nothing more beautiful and meaningful than hearing your child say "I love you daddy". In fact, your post took me back a few years and I can still feel her little arms around my neck and she's the one who gave me a pup for Father's Day even though she was a cat girl. When she was 7 she wanted a kitten for Christmas so I made arrangements to pick one up from a friend. When I went to pick the Calico up on Christmas Eve I learned the kittens were actually in Philadelphia and we lived in NJ. Had to drive all night through a snow storm to get "Happy" and got home just in time for Santa to arrive. We had Happy for 14 years until she disappeared one day. I love animals but love people more. | |

Right there with ya, HB...my two kids still at home are teens, as well - jobs, significant others, school and associated activities. Now, they LOVE their mama, and we DO spend time together, but I refuse to be one of those moms who says "You can't go out tonight because I want you to spend time with ME," when I'm raising them to be independent, self-sufficient human beings with lives of their own.
And to whomever said that I prefer my dog to a man? Depends on the man, Baby... if we're talking about a good, decent man who wants to be honest, loving, and devoted, and who's secure enough to let me be the person that I am, then THAT man could be a part of my life on an ongoing basis. Haven't found him yet, however...and in the meantime, my dog's love is consistent and unconditional.
Oh yeah, and the man wouldn't have to love the dog, either (that's MY job, since he's MY dog)...but he'd have to accept him.

My dog doesn't have a "say," but I do trust his judgment with people...if he doesn't like someone (which is rare - he has one of those effusive, "I wanna be your new best friend" personalities), it sends off warning bells with me.
My dog, ultimately, will sleep wherever I tell him to sleep. If I put HIS blanket on the floor, he'll sleep on the floor. GRUDGINGLY, but he'll do it.
