Posted: 8/11/2006 12:11:10 PM | I think I answered this before .. but ... it really depends on the pet ... and the people. a goldfish isn't very important but a family dog is. now criminals aren't too important to me but the guy fixing my car is. so now the delema... which pet and what person?
oh well ... I'll let you choose because i ain't gonna do it unless I absolutely have to.

| Are pets as important as people? Posted: 8/11/2006 1:12:45 PM | I love animals & I love my pets but I don't love them more than the people I love in my life. They're important but not as important as the people in my life. | |

| Are pets as important as people? Posted: 8/12/2006 3:33:21 AM | Well, before going into nursing I worked for veterinarians. Yes, people do love their animals more than their family members in some cases. They are always there, not judgemental and ask for nothing. However, there are people who put their animals before anything else and that is not healthy. A good healty human relationship is extremely important.
I have had a number of animals over the years - 3 dogs, 4 cats, countless fish, 4 turtles, 2 snakes, 2 rabbits, a hedgehog, a degu, 2 birds, 2 rats and a 2 hamsters my kids loved being in that environment. The boys had the snakes - one a boa and one python. They where amazing - I was intrigued by their lifestyle. However, the boys would not allow me to see when they where feeding them. LOL They would run upstairs with the rodents for dinner because they knew if I saw them I'd want to keep them. LOL
A this time I have 2 cats, a Beta (Siamese Fighting Fish), and a****teil (he's about 12 years old, left over from when the kids where at home). My daugher has 2 dogs, my oldest son has a dog and my youngest son has a dog. Talk about keeping it in the family one of my daughter's dogs and my oldest son's dog are pups of the youngest one's dog.
Okay so I have grandpuppies instead of grandchildren. LOL

I don't think you can love a pet too much. The unconditional love that one recieves from a pet is like no other, and hey they don't talk back (LOL).

I once broke up with a girl because she kissed her dog in the mouth.
Wow, you really wouldn't like me then..... cause I kissed a bear... and it wasn't even mine!! The picture to prove it is with my profile. It's dark 'cause I didn't have a flash but it was taken just this last friday. I'm still getting a kick out of meeting an actual bear that up close and personal.
but to answer the original questions....
Are pets as important as people? Why is it we love animals so much? Do some people care more about their pets than their spouse or children? Can you love a pet too much?
I think all life is important, pets vs people, I agree with what some others have said, depends on who the person is... and to me, my pets are a part of my family, so it would be like comparing who's more important.... your brother or your sister?? It would be a choice I'd hope to never have to make.
I think we love animals so much because we do. They love us too.
And probably some people do care more about their animals than their spouse or children. And maybe not really more, they just can show it more and don't worry about pet's hurting their feelings or pets saying things in anger, etc. That 'unconditional love' that many have already mentioned. So it often just so much easier to love their pet, and not still be ticked off about the thoughtless comment from last week. Ya know?
And I for one, don't think you can love a pet too much...... although I think you can, not love people enough, which might seem like loving a pet too much by comparison. Native Americans have a saying about "all my relations" and that doesn't just mean family or even people, but all things, people, four footed, winged, everything. I think it makes a good point.
Glad I got to put in my two cents on this thread.

| Are pets as important as people? Posted: 10/1/2006 2:52:38 PM | A Woman kissing their dog on their mouth is disgusting?
Are you aware that many women clean their dogs more throughly than most men clean themselves? And I'm just talking about men under the age of 40! *happy chuckles*
Just kidding... I wish!
Love for all,

p.s. And the moral of today's stoy is: "Kissing dogs is thought to be bad by some people. But drinking soda is thought to be Good by most people (even though if you put a nail in your average soda it will eat through the nail within a couple days)!"
Remember: If Dogs had the money to afford corporate brainwash advertisements like Coca-Cola, you'd be kissing them all the time!
double p.s. Sometimes, the more I hear the logic of human beings, the more i realize how intelligent a cat's meow or a dark's bark can truly be!

| Are pets as important as people? Posted: 10/1/2006 2:59:13 PM | Pets become members of your family and are just as important. I will admit I love my dog like she is my child, I have no real children. Dogs make you happy, they are joyful, smart, they love you unconditionally, that is something rare for humans. If I have had a bad day all I do is grab the leash and Gracie and we go for a walk and then everything is alright. I couldn't be with someone who didn't like animals, dogs in particular and that is why my motto is, I may not always have a man but I will always have a dog. | |

| Cat Lover Posted: 12/18/2006 8:11:21 PM | | Many people have longer relationships with their animals then they do with members of the opposite sex. (They can't take you to court either)..Meowwwwwwww "Judge not lest ye be judged". | |

| Are pets as important as people? Posted: 12/18/2006 9:32:57 PM | Most people prefer pets because pets are "safe" -- at least they believe they are -- compared to humans. With a pet you don't have to feel vunerable. With humans you do if you want to connect in any meaningful way, and that's quite scary for a lot of people, especially those who have experienced great amounts of pain at the hand of another person.
Living comes with great risks, and pets are a buffer for those needs we as humans have that sometimes are neglected by those we care about most or at least by those we would like to have care about us. Until we're willing to let people in, we'll supplement and protect ourselves in anyway we can. Pets are a top choice for doing just that.

| Are pets as important as people? Posted: 12/18/2006 10:58:12 PM | | Yes, but for different reasons - MB, the post above, summed up those reasons. Pets are also another form of entertainment to distract us from stresses, which don't pertain only to relationships [i.e., work stress]. It's been proven that petting animals lower blood pressure, and reduce stress better than a spouse would. | |

| Are pets as important as people? Posted: 12/19/2006 6:52:54 AM | Pets are important, for one simple reason,... they love you unconditionally. In a world where too many things have conditions on them- they love you for you, no judgements. Q | |

With respect, Blue, I disagree. My previous dog and I frequently made trips into northern Canada. She was specifically trained (by me) to handle herself during serious life and death situations. We had an excellant relationship--far beyond that of any human I've ever known. One of the reasons for that was respect. There were many things she was capable of that I was not--and I ensured she knew it. I was not her 'owner', I was her companion. An equal.
There is the potential for a great power-difference paradigm between animals and humans. Those that perpetuate this myth are locked into a realm of perception far below what is possible and I feel only tragedy for the humans so encumbered, and great pity for the animals they keep locked within the confines of their tiny minds.
To view animals in a diminutive way says nothing more than that such a person has not understood the scope, depth and value of life.
I for one feel quite a bit of vulnerability around animals. Not perhaps on a physical level (though the time with the mountain lion was proof positive just how inferior we are on a basic survival level), but certainly on a metaphysical/spiritual level. Humans may be wonderful at building things like space-shuttles, but we are singularly inept at appreciating the subtleties of the spirit--a realm the animal-kingdom far surpasses us in. Our great brain has induced a sense of hubris far surpassing our ability to comprehend; it is very much our achilles heal.
Lastly, I have experienced great pain from animals: As much as humans. From vicious attacks to the deepest of griefs, the realm of my experience has been profoundly affected by each.

| Are pets as important as people? Posted: 12/19/2006 7:59:59 AM | Yes, I think pets are as important as people. We have a beige chihuahua named Ivan. He rules the house. He is funny and loving and I love dressing him up in little outfits. I think of him as my little grandson...he is my daughter's dog actually. He loves his toys, and he has a remote control car that he loves to get on and we make it go for him. We plan to get him a truck for Christmas!

| Are pets as important as people? Posted: 1/2/2007 6:07:14 AM | Absolutely!
My cat nudges me when the alarm goes off in the morning...
she greats me when I get home...
she knows when I am ill or sad....
she HATES when I lock her out of the bathroom.....
When everyone else is too busy, too tired, has the kids, already made plans, or just 'sorry' my cat is here....checking in on me and making sure I have put food in her bowl.....
I used to have dogs all the time, still do on occassion, and animals are wonderful creatures.
I think I would rather pet sit (which I do) than baby sit !!
LIke so many already said....
their love is unconditional, non judgemental.....and that is something EVERY creature great and small deserves. Their love holds no limitations. They love you if you are fat, skinny, smoke, or don't smoke, graceful or a klutz, employed or unemployed.....they don't come with a list of 'must haves' before you can take them home with you....
Who WOULDN'T want that in their lives? So in that respect, YES!!!! Pets are important as people - more so in some respects.

| Are pets as important as people? Posted: 1/2/2007 8:20:51 AM | | Hell I think of my dog as a human. I talk to her, I treat her the way I treat everyone else, I have had actual conversations with her. I know she doesn't understand the stuff I say to her, but I swear to you right now that she is trying very hard everytime I talk to her to understand. I know it I can tell in the way she acts. | |

| Are pets as important as people? Posted: 1/2/2007 9:38:18 AM | last month my favorite fishin companion became alot more than just a "pet"...fishbait passed his test and became my seizure response dog...during tha last year and a half this dog has redefined tha word "hero" for me....i have never had a person who would without fail warn me when something bad was about to happen, willingly place himself to catch my fall no matter how painful it was to him, and stay close and reassure me during every bad moment of my day....lets face it, ppl just cant give other ppl tha kind of 24/7 devotion a service animal can....if i am having petit mals an wanna take a shower...no problem, bait stands right there in tha shower with me while i wash my hair instead of tellin me my hair dont matter an i need to lay down i never have ta face any situation alone, hes always willing to listen to my fears, and i dont even worry about havin seizures in my sleep .....cause hes right there, watchin over me....yeah, this dog has already proven his importance in my life in a 1000 ways....its actually gonna be hard fer a person to reach such a level of importance in my life...but dont stop tryin fellas | |
