@laverboy

Children are innocent...and they love unconditionally, just as animals do, until they learn more about the real world and it starts to affect their innocence.

@All

I believe we love animals because they give unconditional love (even my cat does; he's more like a dog, lol) and they're also innocent, trusting, and don't ask for more than shelter, food, and love back. It's an uncomplicated relationship, probably the only uncomplicated one people have ;)

I have loved all of my animals, but I wouldn't place them above a spouse or child, though they wouldn't be far below them ;) I do think some people can love them too much as I've seen some people almost destroyed when their pet dies; and I don't mean just normal sadness and grief, but more than some people show for a relative dying.

Very good post, Prolibertate...

I agree about the unconditional love thing with pets, and the fact that it's very uncomplicated.

And I don't think that either myself OR HB places our respective pets above our children, or potential spouses...I had Thor when I was married, and my husband always came first. BUT, in the absence of a "special someone" in my life, he brings me comfort, and reminds me that he loves me, every chance he gets. For THAT, he remains at the top of my list.

Thanks AngienStPete...and yours was excellent...pets do bring such comfort; they almost seem to know when one isn't feeling well or is sad...and their unconditional love is a blessing ;)

Exactly...that's what HB and I were talking about, in this thread, earlier. My dog is UBER-sensitive to my moods...he knows when I'm down. He can just tell. And he tries to fix it... bless his big ol' heart, it makes HIM upset when Mama's sad.

That's why I love him so much. My ex could have taken notes from the DOG.

Mogrl, glad you got Baby. Does anyone "win" in a custody fight?

I was in a car acccident, I would have tremors, my dogs would lay on me all day as if they were trying to help stop me from shaking, they made the pain and day more bareable until my gf would come home.
Well The gf left, I lost one of the dogs last year. My old girl is 17 and still around. She's deaf and half blind and if she's slow to get up or accidently pee's on the floor it's ok. Because I remember her laying on me for 8 hours a day for a month and she never complained. So to me she's important, I don't care what others thing.
And that's all I wanna say about that.

One life is just as important as another, no matter what container it came in. I would go into details, but I don't think anyone would care.

I used to have a dog, a pit bull/german shorthair mix (R.I.P.) who would wake me up if I had a nightmare. From time to time I get really bad nightmares (stress induced), but Underfoot would jump up onto my bed and nose me until I woke up. I was always really thankful for that.

Noro, my horse, sometimes seems to know my mood almost before I do. And he's protected me, literally, on more than one occasion. Even Brego, my colt, has managed to act like a guard dog.

I think that animals are more sensitive than humans are because they don't rely so heavily on verbal communication. A person can lie with words, but it's much more difficult to lie with body language. And because of that intuition, and the fact that animals rarely lie (sometimes they DO lie.. I'm a trainer and I see it), it's easier to trust them, thus easier to bond with them.

I completely prefer animals to people. Most of my reasons are covered in other posts here, so I won't go into everything again. You can can never love an animal too much. They deserve more love than humans are capable of giving, I think.

Mine is important to me. He is a male Chinese Sharpei and is very devoted to me. He is at my side whenever I'm home and is very intuitive about me.
I'm in a boot cast (actually, I'm SUPPOSED to be in it) and when I was still using crutches, he knew right off the bat that I couldn't walk him as I normally do. He would keep looking back at me as if to say "is this too far??" He sleeps ON my bed, sits at my feet when I'm using the computer, and levels me every time I walk in the door.
He allows me to do things with him that he will not allow anyone else to do. Sharpei's have many rules. When he was sick, I was the only one that could get away with giving him his meds, feeding him, etc.
When I cry, he is there. When I sleep, he is there. When I'm not home, he is impatiently waiting at the door. When I need exercise, he runs me all over this big ole house and up and down all the stairs. He also swipes my food and empties my trash cans...by default, so to speak...
This dog is very, very special to me. He was beaten and abused by a previous owner and I'm determined to get him through that and make it all forgotten, somehow.

If it weren't for him keeping me "running" right now, I would have taken this damn computer and heaved it out the window.

I see no difference in the value of a human life vs. an animal's. I appreciate that others don't see it that way, but I value my dog's lives as much as any human's.

Hi Sharon, That was a very touching message you posted about the death of your dog. I felt your pain as well as that of your 9yr old dog - grieving for her friend.
I have tried to email you but it was rejected twice. Are you having problems with your email account?
Hope you're keeping well.

People can come and go from one's life, but pets are loyal, loving, and ask for little. Guaranteed: I would choose my cat over a guy, any day. I am not a neurotic "cat lady", but my girl is truly my heart. "Good friends are hard to come by." as the saying goes. True, that. Be the friend human or furry, never knock loyalty, love, and companship.
