I never figured that NASCAR would let Jr take #8 or Budweiser with him to HMS. Just think of the $$$$$$$$$$$$ that all you Jr fans have to lay out for the newly licensed NASCAR products that the France family can sell to you. I do think that Jr did the right thing in joining HMS. Go 48

Jr. has already stated that the number will have an 8 and another number in it. A source from Hendricks told me that 81 will be the number. Nothing in stone yet but that is the latest.
#2 cannot be the number since the Miller Lite Blue Deuce already has that number.

RYR asked NASCAR to transfer the #38 to Hendrick for Dale Jr.: SPEED's Bob Dilner reported on Sunday's SPEED report that Robert Yates Racing has asked NASCAR if they could transfer the #38 to Hendrick Motorsports in 2008 for Dale Eanrhardt Jr. to use, the #3 in honor of his father, the late Dale Earnhardt, who ran the #3 [a few races in 1981 and then from 1984 until the 2001 Daytona 500 and won 6 of his 7 championships using #3] and the #8 of course is Dale Jr.'s car #8 since he came into the sport. No word what number David Gilliland would switch to, but RYR still has the license on the #28, last used in 2002 with Ricky Rudd and has used the #90 in the past.
AND: Sources close to the situation told ESPN.com on Monday that Robert Yates Racing and Hendrick Motorsports are discussing a transfer of that number for 2008. The #38 currently is being used by David Gilliland. No formal request has been made to the NASCAR, which has to ultimately approve the transfer. Officials at Hendrick Motor Sports, Robert Yates Racing and JR Motorsports could not be reached for comment. Should RYR give up #38, it still has the rights to the #28 that was last used in 2002 with Ricky Rudd.(ESPN.com)(8-27-2007)

I think next year with HMS will tell all. If he can be any kind of driver, this is his chance. There won't be any more excuses. Best of luck to him !

Could not have said that better myself
Jr is way to commercialized , He makes all his money from sponsers , you really think he cares if he wins a race? He's sitting pretty on all his royalties
When goes to HMS I will guarantee you he will race the same , if not worse. There are too many Jr fans that dislike jeffy and jimmy to actually go for their team spirit
And since this is an older thread, the OP only asked if Jr was overrated...The answer would be a definate YES

Jr. still has to start winning races again to keep his fans. I too think that he will do better with HMS. He actually did good this year but had engines let go. The one was just the balancer on the front of the engine that came off and hit some oil lines. That was just a couple loose bolts that worked loose and then broke off. If he would have finished that one and the other blow-up...he would be in the chase.

Certainly overrated-but for good reason. He is very personable-a good ol' boy-a chip off the old block.

Certainly deserving-on the social side of racing. The move to HMS will get things down to the nitty-gritty. He has the ability(or does he?) Lets see him put it into action

I think Dale Jr will do good next year at HMS saw how he has been running the past few races if not for engine problems he would be safe in the chase but that`s racing some good luck and some bad and if what I read is right Tony Jr going with him should be good they work good together, for his number what ever it is I`m ok some say it will be #81 now things been said he could be the #38 just have to wait and see , I think even if he does`nt make the chase the rest of the season he will run good most recent races he has been top 5-10 ...go Jr Bud #8

Ya Ave's,I heard the other day (according to TSN) that they are in discussion with Yates for the #38.But even if Jr gets that #,I'm sure fans will still be upset cause would RCR/DEI let them use the stylelised numbers that we have grown so used too.

I am a fan of his,but if he likes tradition so much.HE SHOULD drive the #5 and forget anything with a #8 in it.If ppl are gonna get 8 tat's that's there problem not his.The #5 has history at HMS with Bodine and Labonte,it had a little blip with Vickers and Bush but thats life. And the five was to be Ricky Hendrick's team to run.So i would be honored to run the #5,and I really dont care for that team.

Regan Smith was finalizing a deal Thursday to drive the No. 01 for Dale Earnhardt Inc. next season.
Smith has verbally agreed to a one-year contract that includes a team option for two more seasons. The deal is expected to be announced next weekend at Richmond International Raceway, where DEI is planning to announce its entire 2008 lineup.
"Since the merger, Regan's first choice has always been to stay with DEI," said agent Jeff****rson of Motorsports Management Inc. "We are working hard to make that happen."
Siegel has previously said he's trying to put together a split schedule for Mark Martin and Aric Almirola to share the No. 8 next season. That deal is being held up by sponsorship negotiations.
Siegel has said he did not want to sign a driver to a long-term deal for the No. 01 because he wanted to leave DEI's options open for next year's free-agent class. Greg Biffle, Ryan Newman and Bobby Labonte are all in negotiating years with their respective teams, and could become available to DEI if Smith does not work out.

I have also heard about Jr. trying for the #38 now. He would be more comfortable with that number which would represent both his daddy and his history in racing. This would be a very good fit!!!

Yea I`ve seen the #38 for Dale Jr on a few other forums come up as well,Biffle has had a few talks with DEI in the past ,Roush has to cut one car at the end of 08 which could free Biffle
I think that`s a good way to do things at DEI by sharing the #8 with Mark Martin and Aric , Mark is a very popular driver and Mark could teach alot to Aric.
I thought I read somewhere that the #8 could possibly be the US Army car but the US Army has been with the #01 for awhile now with Joe before they released him kind of bummer for Joe he kept the US Army #01 in 35 in points for a few years.

I think Dale Jr has to win or be in top 5 but I think the beginning of the end to the chase was set when his engine went in Pocono although Jr ran well in races since then so has Kurt in the blue #2 , I think Jr will give it his all in the next two races for the cut off but I think things are set unless a few guys ahead of him have trouble but that`s racing.
I believe Jr will drive his best until the end of the season hopefully see a win for him.

Mountain Dew and Amp Energy Drink at Earnhardt, Jr's Sponsors?: Dale Earnhardt Jr. and Hendrick Motorsports are expected to announce later this month Pepisco Inc. products Mountain Dew and Amp energy drink are his primary sponsors for next season, sources confirmed Sunday.(ESPN.com)(9-3-2007)

Jr is going to be #81 Mountain Dew? So I guess that will be a help for all those with a jr tattoo. Can't imagine it would be hard to make a #1 somewhere-lol

So, will his Bud #8 merchandise become collector's items, or are there going to be a lot of red scrub rags underneath many kitchen sinks?

I'd say his true fans will keep everything as collectors items since the #8 is a family number.

Hush yo Mouth Mag! Just kidding I am keepin my stuff Th flag , and the sign and everything else I have. Will give clothes resaectable dismisssal when time. have a great day!!!

Oh and this is how Junior Can still get in the Race. Gotta wash all my shirts and Fly the flags and get out my car flags as well this weekend. See Ya lots to do!!!

How Dale Jr. can make the Chase: #8-Dale Earnhardt Jr. still has a shot to qualify for the Chase for the Nextel Cup. A longshot, granted. “I want [our fans and sponsors] to know that no matter what, me and the team are giving everything we got,” Earnhardt said. “We're not going to lose focus or give up or pack it in.” Earnhardt is 13th in series points coming into Saturday night’s Chevy Rock & Roll 400, 128 behind 12th-place #29-Kevin Harvick. The top eight drivers in the current points have clinched Chase spots. Drivers in ninth and 10th place must only start on Saturday night to clinch. The lowest Earnhardt can finish at Richmond is fifth to still have a chance at making the Chase. The two caveats to that scenario: He must also lead the most laps and Harvick has to finish 43rd. He can also finish fourth and lead one lap, or finish third and lead no laps and still qualify – as long as Harvick finishes last. On the other end of the spectrum, if Earnhardt wins Saturday night and leads the most laps, he’ll clinch a spot if Harvick finishes 33rd or worse OR if Kurt Busch finishes 37th or worse. If Earnhardt wins but doesn’t lead the most laps, he’ll need a Harvick finish of 34th or lower OR a Busch finish of 39th or lower.(NASCAR PR)(9-5-2007)

And this news of next years sponsorship for today is!!!!!I was told yesterday that some rumors have been swirling around about Dale Earnhardt Jr.'s car for next season. Rumors have been popping up everywhere, but this is the most consistant one. According the rumor, Junior's sponsor will be Mountain Dew next season.

And, according to the rumor, the number Junior switches to for next season will be the "78."

All done, of course, with the colors of Mountain Dew.

Lot of things have to happen for Dale Jr to make the chase I think he will finish in top 5 maybe even win but Harvick pretty well has to crash for Dale Jr to make it in,I think
Dale Jr will win the million for the 13th place driver.
his points don`t really show how he has been running he has in most races ran up from in top 15 but with the five DNF`s that`s like loss of 500 points.
Like they say in racing you have to be good and lucky but luck has not always been with Jr with the 4 engines going on him.
Man but the past few races he has driven that Bud #8 for all he is worth.
Next year will be whole new ball game HMS engines don`t blow up very often.
I though Kenny Wallace drove the #78 furniture Row Chevy.

Dale Jr. to open a nightclub: #8-Dale Earnhardt Jr. plans to open Whisky River, a bar and live-music venue, in uptown's new EpiCentre development this December. "It's going to be a cool hangout," said Chris Epstein, a nightclub veteran in Charlotte who is partnering with Earnhardt, the majority owner. But don't expect Whisky River -- named for the bar at Earnhardt's house -- to look like a racing watering hole with NASCAR memorabilia strewn about. Rather, it will resemble a basement bar that anyone would enjoy hanging out in -- including Junior when he's in town, Epstein said. Think lots of wood and metal decorations, multiple TVs and a mechanical bull "with rides a bit rougher than those in a race car," according to a news release. As for food, think bar staples, such as chicken wings. "He really wants it to be a cool place he can take his friends and not be a shrine to anyone," said Epstein, who owned the former Liquid Lounge in Charlotte. He and Earnhardt worked with Charlotte's Bar Management Group, which operates Dixie's Tavern uptown and bars in 21 other cities, to land the EpiCentre location. Earnhardt, who has been sponsored by Budweiser, looked at other markets across the country and closer to home, including Mooresville, before choosing Charlotte. Unavailable Thursday for comment, Earnhardt said in a news release: "Charlotte is where I'm at the most and it's home." Whisky River will open in a 10,000-square-foot space facing East Trade Street across from the Bobcat Arena's main entrance. When asked how much Earnhardt was investing in the entertainment venture, spokesman John Rhodes left it at "a lot." Earnhardt and Epstein expect Whisky River to be popular with Charlotte residents looking for uptown entertainment as well as visitors, especially those checking out the NASCAR Hall of Fame, slated to open in 2010 at Stonewall and Caldwell streets.(Charlotte Observer)(9-7-2007)

The Hendrick team has filed a trademark application for the No. 28 with the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office on Aug. 31. The team had previously filed trademark applications for the 38, 51, 58, 81 and 82, but the No. 28 was added a week ago.

Asked Friday if the Yates organization still had any claim on the No. 28, team co-owner Doug Yates said it did not.

“It’s his if NASCAR lets them have it,” Yates said

speaking of Yates Racing Robert Yates announced his intention to retire as President of Robert Yates Racing following the last race of the 2007 Nextel Cup season. Certain facets of Robert Yates Racing are being transferred to a new company presided over by Doug Yates. The new entity will be called Yates Racing. Robert Yates Racing will continue with its joint ownership of Roush Yates Racing Engines as well as other ventures.

While we are talking changes in ownership How about this note!!
GEM/Petty to merge? Petty Enterprises, NASCAR's most storied organization, is open to a change of ownership. The two-car operation owned by seven-time champion Richard Petty is having discussions with Montreal Canadiens owner George Gillett Jr. that would allow it to merge with Gillett Evernham Motorsports and form a four-car Nextel Cup organization. "They have quoted some numbers,'' Kyle Petty, the CEO of Petty Enterprises and driver of the #45 Dodge, said on Friday at Richmond International Raceway. Gillett recently purchased majority ownership of Evernham Motorsports, now known as Gillett Evernham Motorsports. Petty said Gillett has floated an offer in which the companies would merge but allow Petty Enterprises to continue working under its flagship name. For that to happen, Gillett Evernham Motorsports would have to drop one of its three teams to comply with NASCAR's cap of four cars. The #10 car of Scott Riggs would be the most likely victim.
