This thread has me to thinking that I should get my dehydrator out!
I make Christmas baskets each year and it would be great to put in some homemade treats!
Thanks

Hi mommy........I make all kinds of fruit leather, nothing hard about it at all, you can use just any kind of fruit and mix it to make interesting leathers. I add a cup or so of honey and cinnamon too! I have made it with plums off the tree, apples mixed with bananas, strawberrys...........like I said just anything you want. The grandkids eat it like it is candy! So it don' t last long. I have a gardenmaster dehydrator with fruit leather trays and just spray them with a little Pam and rub it around so the leather
won't stick. I put all the fruit in a processor and just puree it and pour it on the trays. Easy as can be.

I have a bunch of dried tomatoes that I did on my dehydrator last fall. Keep em in the fridge or seal them in a bag and freeze them, they last forever! They are just like when I first made them, you can put them in recipies like soup and even on pizza, they rehydrate and taste great. Crumbled on salad also! And a tasty snack when you want something different than salty things or sweets.
Made a bunch of apple slices too this fall. Just peel, core , slice and dip in fruit fresh, sprinkle some cinnamon sugar on them and lay them out on the racks and dry away! I like mine dried crispy, then vacuum seal them and throw them on a shelf..........nummy!!

I owned dehydrators and would slow cooked Jerky. The only problem is the prep time. I prefer home made jerky since you can control the amout of salt.

Dry strawberries are the best...if you put them on cereal.

Mommie? Doing without the trays? Not sure how you are going to do that. Could take you a long time?
I make the beef jerky with Liquid Smoke, brown sugar and mustard. No measures, just to taste. Be careful you don't use too much of the liquid smoke though!
Otherwise, I just use google as my friend for other recipes! Good luck

I dont have special trays........

As long as you have the standard trays you can use a sheet of parchment cut to fit about 1/4 to 1/3 of the tray and pour the fruit puree on that. Turn up the edges about 1/4" to avoid spillage, and leave plenty of room between sheets and layers for air movement. If you really wanted to get fancy about it, you can cut a donut-shaped ring that would fit the tray, as long as it left a lot of room for air flow, it should work and you're get dried fruit rings.

I went looking for a thread on dehydrators because I have been craving one of my favorite snacks lately and they are getting too expensive to buy, but I prefer homemade anyway.

Crispy Crunchy Green Beans
Get really fresh crisp green beans, wash and dry.
Sprinkle with your favorite spice/herb mix. I do several kinds, sometimes just a little salt is all I want...cajun spice, tarragon, dill, Herbs de Provence (you can make this, the secret is the lavender and the combination of herbs, adjust to your taste) Ingredients:
1 tbls thyme, scant
1 tbls chervil
1 tbls rosemary, scant
1 tbls summer savory
1 1/2 tbls lavender
1 tbls tarragon
1 tsp marjoram
1/2 tsp oregano
1/2 tsp mint
1 powdered or fine crushed bay leaf

Place them on every tray in the dehydrator. I usually do 3 full sessions, 5 trays each. You can bag them and keep them in the pantry for snacks. They are the best alternative to crunchy potato chips I have ever found and no oil, very few carbs and oohhhh so crunchy and crispy.

I have been thinking about trying carrots. Has anyone done these? Do they come out crisp or leathery?

My daughter says she has been drying salted chard leaves in the oven and using them as chips or crushing onto stews and salads. I accidentally did it once and they were smoky and sweet. She said that is what she likes about them. Does anyone dry anything interesting for snacks besides fuit leathers and such?

Dehydrate the mixture about 4-6 hours until the center is no longer soft
Take it out and break into pieces.
