| Is it me, or does radio suck these days? Posted: 5/14/2006 11:11:43 AM | | I haven't listened to the radio for over 7 years. I'm not impressed with radio these days. With payola turning even the music into ads, radio is 100% advertising and 0% music these days... | |

I have very diversified music tastes so I can deal more than some people. I was listening to Jack.fm with my kid in the car this morning and Gary Numan "Cars" came on. My boy LOVED it, so I showed him the video tonite on the internet. He totally dug it. I'm breeding the next generation music geek just like his mama.

They use computer based programming like Audiovault, with all the songs stored for the week they have a playlist that's just shuffled about a bit, and the jocks record their voices and they get played the same way. Clear Channel is one like that, there are more. NPR stations score because they don't have that high powered revenue driven ethos, and they generally rely on unpaid volunteers who choose what they play from what they like, and usually have a clue about it. It's so much better that the lack of slick is almost a bonus, too.

I wish CBC-2 would programme more jazz. "After Hours" is great, but it's only two hours, Monday to Friday.
I think they devote too much time to classical music. It certainly belongs there, but not to the extent that it is now.
Radio Canada plays some great music. My French is almost non-existent, but I often go to RC if CBC-1/CBC-2 get a little dreary.

Here in Victoria there are two stations that aren't TOO bad if you switch back and forth between them. Sometimes you even hear some cool music! I only have the urge to puke about six times a day, which, considering the load of crap floating around out there, isn't bad!

Posted: 5/20/2006 9:46:24 AM | | I listen to like 4 different channels, it is very rare that I can't find something that I like to be on at least one if not all of those channels. I guess here we have some awesome radio stations, like 102.1 The Edge, Y108, Q107, and 97.7, I have it good up here! I LOVE IT!

JACK fm is one of the worst offenders.
I've been listening to this for a few days and they play ALL the old stuff from when I was a teen. Even obscure new wave songs. Yesterday I heard REO Speedwagon followed by the Ramones. I LOVED that. I think sometimes it's good to zone out on old familiars. iIt's like the oldies station for people like me. I listen to pretty obscure music other than that.

| Is it me, or does radio suck these days? Posted: 5/21/2006 12:17:17 PM | The main problem is that not many people use the radio to find out about new stuff or new artists, they only go there to find out the latest Gwen Stefani song or--in the reverse case--older, more established hits from the Stones or Pink Floyd. "Dark Side of the Moon" has been on the charts for like, 1500 weeks, and still sells between 8 and 9 thousand copies a week!! So that's the problem with radio, it caters to what people want, know and expect, and is taking less chances than ever, because why would a record label even bother with new talent, when "Dark Side of the Moon" is proven to sell, with a minimum of risk, promotion and advertisement?
I had a radio show on a college station around here, playing a bunch of obscure rock n' roll like Turbonegro and the Hellacopters and stuff like that, and let me tell you: there's not many people listening. Gone are the days of edgy radio, where they'd break artists like Hendrix. Radio, moreso nowadays, is about playing what's already been established; this safe, controlled musical environment, and bad radio has driven alot of people away, permanently. Plus, with all the podcasting lately, I wonder if it hasn't ruined itself to a point where there's alot of people saturating the market with renegade DJ-ing, when the truth of it is, it makes people feel alot like I do in the shampoo section at the local drugstore--I don't know where the hell to start!! Sometimes too many options is a bad thing, too, so I don't know where the happy medium is with it. The podcasting is cool......but i'm still wondering if that too, is another reason for radio to not actually push vital, original talent, when they figure that everyone's illegally pirating (or pirate broadcasting) that talent, to begin with.

I go there everyday and get a coffee, read the paper, and listen to the music. I actually want to get a sattelite radio so I can get the Starbucks channel and play the music at home!

| Is it me, or does radio suck these days? Posted: 5/26/2006 10:22:42 AM | | I missed the days when radio had freedom and DJ's could play what they wanted. Its the same at all radio(except for college and free form radio), they pretty much have a play list and play the same stuff over and over again | |
