I gave up on Canadian radio for 107.7 The End Seattle (just across the border). Too many Canadian stations want to appeal to EVERY audience out there rather than focus on good programming for a particular audience.

I used to have to tape my radio antenna to the ceiling until live audio streaming was invented. Hurray for technology!!

here is the bad part

Top 40 radio: whatever is a hit you will hear over and over again

Classic Rock Radio: Same old tired stuff from Led Zeppelin, Fleetwood Mac, Pink Floyd and the Eagles

Oldies Radio: Seldom do they play anything that came out in the 50's or early 60's and why is 70's music like the Eagles, Doobie Brothers and Bachman Turner Overdrive on oldies radio?

As far as I am concerned no radio station never ever needs to play an Eagles record again

doesnt help when some of the radio station is practically own by record companies ...

maybe not directly, but through sponsors, ads, etc etc ...

you ever wonder why they're jamming ashlee simpsons down our throat?

imagine if radio stations are free from all that corporate crap ... I'm sure we'll be hearing a whole lot of different playlist altogether ...

They just play too much of the same songs over and over on too many stations. There are a few stations rebelling against this and actually playing some new and some old ,but no repeats hour after hour .Music variety is an art,not a science.

Yep, sucks. They don't take chances anymore, lost their spirit. I can turn on the Edge once every 6 months and be totally sick of it after an hour. No wonder bands don't make it these days, they get their single played if there is one and that's it.

Thank goodness for my 10 disc changer, iPod and FM Receiver attachment!

I love finding new bands, especially when they are not popular. They play in small venues and the tickets are very reasonable. They make up some of my favourite discs.

There's a great song by The Ataris called Radio #2, here's some of the lyrics:

This is the starting of a brand new revolution
Bite the hand that feeds
Stand up and fight against messages that they're sending
Stop their frequency

You're always talkin' (its never ending)
It's about time that we turned off the radio
Call the request lines and tell them that it's over
You're always playin' all of the same songs
Over and over again
It's about time that we all turned off the radio

We'll listen to b-sides and sing along
To anthems of the years gone by
Integrity and honesty will prevail tonight
When it's all over (when it's all over)
One question still remains
Why do so many bands never make it to the radio?

Look outside your FM dial
They're preaching lies in 4/4 time
A generation without a voice
It's stripped of pride

Cheers ;o)

Radio does suck but i don't think it's entirely their fault. Onair can probably speak to this better than I but I think the record companies are as much to blame. For example, let's say a band has a new album out that a record company has invested heavily in. In order for a radio station to get things like concert tickets, promotions, or even CD's to give away, I believe they have to guarantee heavier rotations for that particular band. Not exactly like the old payola days but not all that different. Am i way off base on this one, onair? I think also that lighter FCC restrictions on how many stations an entity can own in a given market also contributes to a more...vanilla selection of music, whatever the genre.
Besides, the music being made today is so watered down and packaged(for the most part...there are still a few original acts) that even if the playlists diversified, we still wouldn't have much variety. Is there any real discernable difference between all these made for TV pop acts, psuedo-gangsters, Nirvana wanna-be's, or nearly identical country pop acts?
Kind of sad really.....at a time when technology could help us into a golden age for popular music, all we are treated to is act after act that looks and sounds just like the act 15 minutes ago.
Somebody above busted on the Eagles. I'm tired of them too but they had some relevance at least....and some measure of staying power. Think anybody will be playing or listening to Ashley Simpson or Kenny Chesney or Usher 30 years from now. Not likely.

ive worked in the radio business and all songs are given a single letter category which determines how much rotation a song gets...alot is pushed by the record company, some of it has to due with how new and popular the song is ,also the demand through call ins for certain songs, and what style of music the station plays....the program director picks alot of the "filler" songs that you hear besides the new stuff

with top 40 every 2 hours you are pretty much going to hear the same set of songs because that geographic of people are younger for the most part

Most radio sucks. I do love however, Ongoing History of New Music on the edge. You can also listen to it online at:

http://edge102.com/station/ongoing_history_of_new_music.cfm?ell=6743&pge=1

They have lots of different eposides, I wish I could get it for my iPod, that would be awesome!

When I was younger, I used to love listening to the radio. Each time one of my favorite songs would come on, I'd get very excited and I used to find some of the radio commercials very entertaining too. I guess since I graduated high school, I"ve had very little use for radio stations. Its the same crap over and over. Its not really the fault of the radio station. Record Companies just shouldn't have total control over em, not to mention clear channel. These days, if I wanna hear music, I have my i-pod, theres local independent radio stations, and the internet is always a good place too. Commercial radio has been going straight downhill since the early 90's and I don't think its gonna go back up again anytime again in the future, if at all. In other words, commercial radio just isn't worth it anymore. Enuff said.

Sirius is the best! Wouldn't know what to do without it! Well worth the $13 a month. Got my sister and her roommate each one for X-mas...they can't give it up now. We got my dad one last Father's Day just for the Nascar channel and now he's hooked on the music and NPR as well. My sister's brother in law had her car for the last 2 days...when he brought it back last night he said he wanted a Sirius radio because he couldn't stop listening to the blue collar comedy channel. Haven't found anyone that has had it and
canceled their subscription. I love classic rock, but how many times must I hear "Freebird" or "More Than A Feeling" or "Back In Black"? These bands had more than two or three songs but you wouldn't know it by listening to the local stations run by the corporate whores! Does anybody else remember when EVERY city had stations that didn't sound like any other city's stations? You know, like FM was in the 70's and early 80's when it was called AOR (Album Oriented Rock)? DJ's actually played what they wanted to play off an album, not what some program manager says the focus groups have revealed that people want to hear. This is why the bands from that era are "classic". They didn't all sound alike and you weren't going to hear the same single ad-nauseum for three months straight. Can anyone point out to me what is the difference between a song from Nickelback and one from Hinder? It's all bland pablum made for mass consumption. Welcome to your future...America run by big business.

A friend once said "show me someone who gets upset over radio and I will show you a person that has a small music collection". Satellite radio I dont think is any better than mainstream radio, still play the same tired songs over and over again.

MAINSTREAM radio will always suck. independant stations play lots of good stuff, same goes for a lot of college/univ. radio.

i've always thought that there are 2 types of music fans: those who are content with what music is presented to them through the media, and those who go out and find the music that suits them.

i generally avoid the radio like the plague, and try to download a new album every day.

depends on your style, I love pop music so I don't think the radio sucks. I just wish people would stop singing about sex and partying, I can't relate at all.

Let me prefix this by saying I rarely listen to real radio because I can't stand all the commercials. If I'm at home or work, I usually have Pandora running on my computer.

Here in LA, INDIE 103.1 is the only radio station I listen to (other than NPR). They're not perfect; they have a habit of playing a cool new song to death, but they also play a lot of good stuff from a variety of bands that you'd never hear on other big stations.

Commercial radio does suck.
Other posters have said it well already - same songs over and over and over.

In Alberta we have a gem of a station CKUA (and can be found on the web) public radio, play what they want. They do play some stuff that you would hear on a commercial station, but for the most part they are playing a wide variety of artists and genres.
Weekdays are when I listen most.
Saturday afternoons from about 3 in the afternoon until late - best programming around.
I am a huge listener and supporter of CKUA.

We have one locally owned station here that has some great personalities and fun games during rushhour and whatnot that I like to listen to. Trivia games and such, a smattering of everything really.

I am just glad we are past the grunge rock sound. Nothing makes me change the radio quicker than that, unless it is the original himself.

Most of it does suck but there are a few gems. There is a station here that plays "Acoustic Sunrise" on sundays which got so popular it also does acoustic sunset now and they play clean music. Real raw talent that can stand on its own. That is really about the only thing that actually draws me to the radio anymore.

Except some talk radio. Still like our local car guy who is going on 15 years. People call in with their problems, he solves or advises them. Superb diagnostician, he is, plus an ex-racer.

Once an awhile I will turn on the afternoon guy on the same station because he's entertaining. He does these weird off the top of his head sort of "raps"... not rap music raps, but like the old hippy bongo white man raps that are clever, spontaneous, and humorous. Mildly addicting.

So there is still a tiny bit of decent radio out there.

I just don't like all those stupid commercials they have after every 3 songs. And they last, almost, 10 minutes before you can hear a song again....SHEEEESH!!!

i love all types of music, so I have lots of channels to listen to.. Some is trash, some has good beats that remind of the 80's music, some has great harmony that makes me sing along.. I also have 650 songs on my PC.. just in case.

why is 70's music like the Eagles, Doobie Brothers and Bachman Turner Overdrive on oldies radio?

Umm, a better question would be "Why isnt Duran Duran or Nirvana on these oldie stations? " The 70's was the stone age, sure they had some good bands, but the fact of the matter is it's ancient. Today's stuff like Taking Back Sunday, Jimmy Eat World, Fall Out Boy, and My Chemical Romance basically dethrones the former bad-ass's of yesteryear.
