The saddest song ever to me would have to be "THESE EYES" by the Guess Who..everytime I hear it I cry..it was my late Husband and I's song...

When I hear it it makes me realize just how much I miss him..I Love You George..xo

2nd saddest: "All By Myself" by Eric Carmen (like we all haven't felt that way before)

But THE saddest song: "Seasons In The Sun" by Terry Jacks...I can't get through that song without balling! (was the song shared between my sister and her best friend when he was dying).

"The Riddle" by Five For Fighting gets me everytime. It's not really really a sad song but something about it just makes me cry (I think because it makes me think of my grandpa).

There was a "Greatest Tearjerker" countdown on tv a while ago and a lot of the ones already mentioned were on there. Two songs that didn't make it but always choke me up are Sarah McLachlan's "I will remember you" and "Angel." Sighh

Brick - Bens Fold Five

The song is about a guy and a girl, no longer together, that go somewhere for the girl to have an abortion. The girl's health fails and they must tell their families what happened.

And yes, it is a very sad song.

Butterfly Kisses by Bob Carlisle..... first time I heard it at work blew me away. Kids weren't that old then, but one can only wish to come up with the words to something just as profound in their life.

I was going to write "Hurt" - Johnny Cash version. I listened to it again tonight, and what I heard more was the feeling of someone coming to terms with his pain. Which strangely is more of a happier ending. I'm thinking of when he recorded it as part of his farewell album. It makes sense in a strange way to me. Even Reznor says Cash owns that song now...

But for sadness, what came to mind was "Wish You were Here" - Pink Floyd. I listened to that song many times after i moved across country as a teenager. I hear the sadness of lost friendships, separated by distance...

Actually, for me, songs with a certain poignancy bring out different emotions all at the same time. One song, Wild Flower, by Skylark (from way back in the 70s) makes me sad sometimes (for the girl the singer sings about) and hopeful because of the singer's obvious love for the girl and his real concern for her--he really "sees" her, "knows" her and recognizes her as a person. In his depiction of her, he illustrates as much about the kind of man he is, as he does her.

Another song is Louis Armstrong's version of "It's a Wonderful World". It gives me a combination of love, pride as a human being (in spite of all the flaws of the world, it's still a wonderful place -- remember the movie, "Life Is Beautiful"?) and sadness.

...From the soundtrack to Baz Luhrmann's "Romeo and Juliet". It's a song about a teenage girl who kills herself because the guy she likes doesn't even know she exists...

Little Star - Stina Nordenstam

Little star, so you had to go.
You must have wanted him to know.
You must have wanted the world to know
Poor little thing.
Now they know.

Little star,
I had to close my eyes.
There was a fire at the warehouse.
They're always waiting for a thing like this.
Came driving from all over town,
For you, little star.

Little star
So you had to go
You must have wanted him to know
You must have wanted the world to know
Poor little thing
And now they know

Laudamus, adorramus te, Dominec. a
Laudamusbenedicimus
Domine Deus.
Laudamusbenedicimus
Domine Deus.
Cum Sancto Spiritu, in gloria Dei Patris.
( We laud, we adore you, Oh Almighty,
We laud, we praise, Almighty God x2
With/accompanied by the holly spirit
in the glory of God the Father )

For you, little star.

"Who knew" by Pink. Reminds me of the pain of a break up, yet it is a beautiful song.

"Jesus take the wheel" by Carrie Underwood... About a woman driving on a snow white christmas eve with her baby in the backseat on her way to see her parents. She had a lot on her mind and the car started to skid after struggling for a few minutes she realized it was beyond her. She threw her hands up in the air and said" Jesus take the wheel... I' m letting go so give me one more chance, save me from this road I'm on, Oh Jesus take the wheel. I'm letting go....

This song gets me to tears everytime.
Oldies=
Issac Hayes " I stand accused" and also his version of "By the time I get to Phoenix".
Anyone know that old song "One is the lonliest number"? who sings it?

First, I'd like to second (or third/fourth in some cases) most of the songs already mentioned. I'd also like to add several of my own[in case you're unaware now, I'm a music junkie, it will become clear]:

*Two Tear Drops - Brad Paisley
*Little Did She Know(She Kissed a Hero) - Kristy Jackson [911 Tribute song]
Space Oddity - David Bowie
Hate Me - Blue October
*Into the West - Annie Lennox[from Lord of the Rings]
*If I'm Gone When You Wake Up - Hanson [I know I'm probably getting mad rolling eyes, but I was like 12 when this song came out, and it's sad!]
Imagine - John Lennon
I Will Take Care of You - Amy Sky
Theme from Love Story - Andy Williams
Glycerine - Bush[might not actually be sad to all...but assoc. w/ a break-up for me]
*Medication(acoustic) - Garbage[see above]
Dream a Little Dream of Me - any artist
*If We Hold on Together - Diana Ross[plays at the end of The Land Before Time...used to make me bawl!]
100 Years - Five for Fighting[I don't know why, this song seems so sad to me though]
If You Don't Wanna Love Me - Cowboy Troy
There is No Arizona - Jamie O'Neal
Take My Heart Back - Jennifer Love Hewitt[yeah, I said it, and what?!]
She's Out of My Life - Josh Groban's version
Open Arms - Journey
You Don't Bring Me Flowers - Neil Diamond w/ Barbara Streisand
She Thinks His Name was John - Reba McEntire
Behind Blue Eyes - Limp Bizkit's version

*signifies songs that have actually made me cry - the rest are just sad.

I have one that not too many would remember. My mom played it all the time whan I was a kids and it still gets to me 30 some years later.

Dolly Parton - Me and Little Andy

Late one cold and stormy night I heard a dog a barkin
Then I thought I heard somebody at my door a knockin
I wondered who could be outside in such an awful storm
Then I saw a little girl with a puppy in her arms
Before I could say a word she said, my name is sandy
And this here is my puppy dog, its name is little andy
Standing in the bitter cold in just a ragged dress
Then I asked her to come in and this is what she said
Chorus:

Aint ya got no gingerbread
Aint ya got no candy
Aint ya got an extra bed for me and little andy
Patty cake and bakersman
My mommy ran away again
And we was all alone and didnt know what else to do
I wonder if youll let us stay with you

Giddy up trotty horse, going to the mill
Can we stay all night
If you dont love us no one will
I promise we wont cry
London bridge is fallin down
My daddys drunk again in town
And we was all alone and didnt what we could do
I wonder if youll let us stay with you

She was just a little girl, not more than six or seven
But that night as they slept the angels took them both to heaven
God knew little andy would be lonesome with her gone
Now sandy and her puppy dog wont ever be alone

Aint ya got no gingerbread
Aint ya got no candy
Aint ya got an extra bed for me and little (whispers) andy
