I'd try a semi-transparent stain followed by a few coats of a nitro-cellulose lacquer applied by an hvlp gravity feed gun (if you have a compressor). I'm an industrial painter and I used to work in a wood shop as a painter,so I've got a pretty good grasp on things.

Hope this is of some help!

I'll second the "HVLP"/nitro suggestion, you can also use HVLP guns without a compressor as conventional rig involves an air turbine (like a reverse vacuum cleaner), and using a compressor most often requires an adaptor. Depending on where you live, you can rent an HVLP rig, be sure to get a "fine" needle/nozzle combo.
(And wear a NIOSH respirator rated for organic solvents!)

The suggestion of Stew-Mac for info is another good one, Stew-Mac has probably launched most of the luthier careers in North America.

All Tube Goodness, Line 6 PODXT

Ha! ...seeing these in the same sentence makes me cringe, ...just a little.

I think after college I am going to invest in a Mesa Boogie Dual Rectifier head and a 4x12 cabinet loaded with Celestion G12H 30 watt speakers. I am trying to scrounge up the coin to do a pickup conversion on a guitar of mine. I have an Ibanez RT650 and I am going to be changing out the pickguard, the current combination is HSH but I wish for HSS ala the AT100CL Andy Timmons model, which is heavily based around the RT series, mainly the 450 but the neck is the same size. I am also going to have a graphite nut installed, when I bought the guitar it came with an Earvana composite nut but I have noticed that it's not that good, nor is it spaced properly for my guitar. My pickup choice will be two DiMarzio Cruiser single coils in the neck and middle while a DiMarzio Super Distortion humbucker will fill the bridge slot, 500k volume and tone pots with a coil split on the humbucker.

Isn't the general rule of thumb 250k pots for single coils?

You want tube goodness? Try a '71 Traynor bassmaster into a 15" Eden cab...
Sometimes I'll plug in an Ibanez tube screamer for just a 'lil "dirt"...closest you'll come to real tube distortion in a pedal...I can almost make it sound like a dirty ole fender rhodes with that box....

I'm addicted to that tone!

It depends on the pickup config and desired tone, generally Fender's are 250k, higher output pups can usually handle the larger loading associated with 500k pots without too much "tone suck". One of the reasons I don't like mixing single and dual coil pups. We have a Tele here that is SSH, ...the Humbucker "needs to go".

YBA1, ...basically a Marshall "Plexi", which is basically a "Tweed Bassman", a real sleeper, too bad the secret's out, one used to be able to pick these up for a mere pittance.

Killer amp.

The 15" Eden sounds interesting, I'm assuming that you null the horn (if there is one)?

You know it.
I paid $500 for mine 'bout a year and a half ago...who knows...they may become as coveted as the old Garnets...one thing's for sure...it blows away them new all tube Ampegs....and I don't think I'd touch that new all tube Eden with a ten foot pole!

Dude, please, to a true Ampeg connoisseur, these are called "Cratepegs".

I like some of the Eden stuff, bit my favorite bass rig was my '72 Ampeg V4 through an infinite baffle 2x12 with Altec 417H's, ...stolen from me 2 years ago... I have an SWR portable that I use for practicing, but as I don't really do much live bass playing anymore I tend to go DI when doing sessions, Radial Engineering JD1 DI into a Neve 1081 pre/eq into an LA2A compressor to deck, mic-ing the SWR doesn't add anything useful. I have two more V4s, a '69 in Montreal and a '74 in Toronto, ...I should go to Montreal one of these days or just get my brother to ship me the one from TO, ...some day maybe.

I do miss those Altecs though, and I doubt I'll ever have the coin to replace 'em.

For guitars I'm still happy with the Tweed Fenders I have access too, especially the '57 Tremolux, ...it melts me. I still use my '65 Gibson GA 15 RVT for live stuff.

Hey dudes ,awesome to see this thread happening again......it really is the good stuff

RE: nitro finishing,I paint guitars for a living,it is a pain in the asssss
to get all the gear and setup to do it right ---to paint one or two guitars is not worth it when you actually figure out materials and 'actually hours spent' ---trust me on this one
in most cases it is cheaper to hire a pro

RE: Traynors -love them,I have 2 yba-1 with the bigger trannies(late 60's before the silver bumper cases)
and a 1976 mark 3 ----try using a variac on them---NICE

RE: humbucker and 2 single coils
-my favorite setup-very versitile with the right pickup combination
with a push/pull pot on the bridge humbucker to go from series to parallel

RE: 500 k pots
I usually just use my ears - if I want it a bit brighter I go 500k or 1meg
250k 'warms it up a bit'

Do you use HVLP?

I actually don't mind spraying stuff using a good rig ( ha ha, tools, the other G.A.S.).

Ahhh, my old office, the "Toxic Tunnel".
http://homepage.mac.com/ewald/.Pictures/HVLPrig.jpg

I did a few guitars with this HVLP set up, but mostly I lacquered antiqued architectural copper, lots of it.

A small HVLP rig can probably rented pretty cheap, so it's not such a big deal for guys who enjoy getting their hands dirty working on guitars. I wouldn't do any production level spraying with anything short of the best NIOSH rated safety/hazmat stuff though (when it comes to this stuff, I go "head to toe"), and THAT'S expensive, in which case I agree whole heartedly with: "in most cases it is cheaper to hire a pro".

----try using a variac on them---

Ha ha... no tranny toasters though

I have a hvlp with a compressor, but not turbine driven, that would be cool but it costs moocho money

I have a makeshift sealed rubber suit with a 5"x8" vision visor hood made of plexiglass
I wear a 3m full face mask with supplied air from a tube....I am trying to be as safe as I can on a very limited budget,I am working on it,I cringe when I see painting videos of guys spraying with only a basic mask and no protective garments.....the overspray is free to get all over them...and it does.unless you have a fan system that is pulling serious air,,,..I quit that about 3yrs ago...now I use the 'nitro nuclear suit' and supplied air,In the wood shop I wear a full dual cartridge face mask rated for V.O.C.(95)(paint pestiside rated ) --all the time
air borne wood dust is bad for humans
also I am experimenting with waterbased finishes , I am hoping to spray very little nitro .....only mostly for old gibson restorations etc

RE: tranny toaster,,ya I kinda moved away from 'power soaks and hot plate' they tend to reduce your amps dynamics -IF I use one it is only on one click---4db cut-thats it
I popped my marshall with a hot plate years ago.......but I had the amp dimed and the hotplate on -20db ---after 20mins ------pop no amp---it was fixed no tranny needed---won't do that again

Less toxic, but still toxic, so don't abandon any of your safety habits and read your MSDS's.
Here's me in my old hazmat rated gear:
http://homepage.mac.com/ewald/.Pictures/toxictunnel.jpg
The gloves cost the company $375, you could stick your hands into pretty much anything barring radioactivity, the suit had "booty feet", the running shoes never left the booth. I could last about 20 minutes until the internal temp got to about 120º F)

I used CrystaLaq water based lacquer on the bubinga neck on my bass - perfect. Still fine after almost 10 years.

ya I kinda moved away from 'power soaks and hot plate' they tend to reduce your amps dynamics

A variac is good for dropping the line voltage 5 to 25 volts depending on the amp, this is called "starving the plates" because since the plate voltage is lower in the output tubes, they give up their "sweet spot" at a lower SPL. It's also the basis of the "brown sound", the "brown" comes from the term "brown out" which unlike "blackout", is just a voltage drop.

Never run a hotter than spec voltage though (some variacs can do this), or you'll cook shit.
