| CHEAP !!!!!!!!! Posted: 4/19/2005 1:21:13 AM | The early ones are best, they used to use turret-boards, .....and they made a few "Dumble" clones back then.
The last few years, IIRC, they've gone to PCB boards (more failure/harder to fix), at least they don't "wave-solder" them, .....and they still use top-quality caps, resistors and iron(transformers)
Still, great sounding amps.
Did you find this at L & McQ ??

| CHEAP !!!!!!!!! Posted: 4/19/2005 7:32:54 PM | I was at a show last night and the guitarists for both bands had awesome amps. Neither bothered with the huge cabs. Both were small units using only 10's or 12's..
The first band~ Blue Merle, was great.. Kind of a mix between Newcomer's Home and Coldplay. Intelligent folk music with a modern rock spin. The lead singer played through a Vox amp that sounded better than most I've come across. He didn't use an overwhelming amount of crunch~just enough, ya know.. it got the point across and mixed in well with the rest of the guys.
The headliner~ Glen Phillips, was awesome too. I've seen him play 4 times now. This was the 2nd show I've seen with a band and they did really well. Glen played through a little 10" Matchless amp that destroyed small countries. Matchless amps are rediculous. They're friggin overpriced mutants, but the sound is absurd. Had I 3 grand or so just sitting around, I'd spend it on a guitar and some other goodies... However, had I a million bucks~ I'd save a little room for a nice matchless. They rock!

This amp does get used by a good frined of mine when we do the open mic nights, as he hates to take his Fender Twins anywhere. This amp is deadly!

| THE GUITAR PLAYER'S THREAD Posted: 4/23/2005 10:41:30 AM | Thank you Guitarman100!
I would rather be playing than modeling. However, modeling does pay the bills... at least for now. I have only been modeling for the past 11 years, but I have been playing music almost my entire life. In my 20s I studied under Jazz Master Pianist****Grove. Studies included Modern Harmony, Sight-singing, Dictation, Notation, and Keyboard Harmony, as well as 'CAP' (Composing and Arranging Program).

| THE GUITAR PLAYER'S THREAD Posted: 4/23/2005 1:07:45 PM | | Jimi.... The open mic nights are Jam nights. At the Fenton Road Tavern, Gary and the Time Travelers, part of the old Buick City Blues Band host that. They use a very small P.A. up there, and if you are a guitar play, most of them bring there own amps. For bass, they have an old Peavy 200 watter that does the job just fine for the size of the bar. Lot of good musicians show up for that, and Larry McCray pops in on occasion. Dont know if you've heard of him, he's local, and has toured with B.B. King, Dr. John, just to name a couple. He does tour nationally, and whenever he's in town he usually stops in in support of the local musicians. At Rubes, Bill Toll And Biker Don Harley host that. Thutsdays at the Corruna Road bar, its the band Free Will that host the open mic night there. Your pic looked familiar.... ever stop at the speedway at Bristal Rd. and I-475? | |

| THE GUITAR PLAYER'S THREAD Posted: 4/23/2005 3:09:53 PM | "Rock" may be an understatement, ... anyone who studied with the late, D!ck Grove? she's got some serious cred. Graduating from his "School of Music" is a feather in the cap of any musician.
But, studying under a master of this caliber means, ...serious cred, ....seriously.
Gee, ... The only masters I studied with were, Herb Ellis (one week) and Lenny Breau (4 workshops), .... I'm green with envy.

| THE GUITAR PLAYER'S THREAD Posted: 4/23/2005 11:02:56 PM | Late™:
Actually...
I also attended 2 years of the Grove School of Music (Van Nuys, CA) before the school closed. Those were probably the most incredible years of my life! It was absolutely awesome! Musicians came from every part of the world (Europe, Japan, etc.) to attend. I would have to say that it was probably the highlight of my life... well at least, so far.
It was really sad when Grove had to close the school. I am not sure if you know the story behind what happened, but it had to do with the LA riots. Basically the musicians from Japan pulled out at the last minute because they were scared of coming to the area. The school was already having financial problems when this hit. That was all it took... 10 students canceling. I guess that tells you just how expensive it was to attend. I feel very fortunate that I was able to go. After the school closed, Grove continued to teach through the "School Without Walls" (online courses/programs) which I believe Dana is now running.
It was a really sad day for so many, when D!ck passed away. He was a genuine person with an extremely big heart. I do not think I have ever met anyone more passionate about music in my life!

| THE GUITAR PLAYER'S THREAD Posted: 4/24/2005 1:30:46 AM | | Jimi: Think the guy your referring to that i look like is the owner of Used Compaact Disc and Tapes at Dort Hwy and Atherton. A lot of people have done double takes when they've seen me, then asked me if i was related to him. Im not to well known in the Flint circle of musicians, as im from Detroit originally. Have only lived in this area for about 5 years now. In the late 70's and early 80's was in a band in Detroit (Rapid Fire) that did get a lot of local airplay, and we actually won 2 battle of the bands in Detroit in 80 and 81. That got us down to the Toledo speedway jam, which i dont know if they have any more. In 81.. Sammy Hagar was the Headliner that night. He was the first big name that came to the jam, and while we was a very early act in the afternoon, still was a thrill to be on the same bill as Sammy. Right after the Toledo show, we were booked quite extensively throughout the midwest... Ohio, Indiana, Illinois, Pennsylvania, and even did a couple of shows in New York. We cut one album in Detroit, thought we were going somewhere, then wound up splitting up for reasons i cant even remember! I'll let you know next time Karl and I hit the Fenton Road Tavern. While it is a lot of blues up there, depending on which drummer sits in with us, we usually do about 4-5 songs of off Robin Trowers Bridge of Sighs album. | |
