| THE GUITAR PLAYER'S THREAD Posted: 4/24/2005 5:53:49 AM | wild164 very impressive! me being new york east coast dude.i was not familier with****Grove so i checked out his website.Very nice. back in the day on the east coast my main teacher's where Laurendo Almeda,Sal Salvador who i've studied on one to one basis. there use to be the drummers collective wher i belonged and meet and studied with many a legend. It is alway's good to hear someone's appreciation of some of the massive talent's that have graced our planet. i am looking foward in the near future to study one on one with Larry Coryell as soon as he relocates from fla to new york.Which he has said should be soon.i can't wait it inspires me to stay on top of my techniqe.and just being in the room with a great rubs off on ya. if even just a lil.don't you think? | |

| THE GUITAR PLAYER'S THREAD Posted: 4/24/2005 10:21:48 AM | Yeah, it does (hopefully), rub off, .....the week I spent with Herb Ellis, one on one in the '83, was the most amazing musical journey of my life. It's such a privilege when you can sit across from musicians who have played such a large part in the evolution of music itself, .......impossible to come away from such an experience unchanged.
Larry Coryell, eh?
Hmmmm.... I wonder if Jim Hall is still teaching?
(I can dream, ....can't I?)

| THE GUITAR PLAYER'S THREAD Posted: 4/24/2005 11:04:38 AM | yeap like a dream come true for me. i've met larry on a few occasion's. the last time he was playing at a club near my home it was snowing and not many people showed up maybe 20 to 25 people so i reintroduced myself, reminded him when i suggested to play the acoustic version of spain when he was playing at the village vangaurd. He played it again for me that night. I also know his son Muriel. He was very humble that evening gave me his personal info and agreed to give me some lessons.John Abercrombie also gives lessons in the area and i am involved in playing some gig's with one of his students.Herb Ellis?awesome. i saw tal farlow, barny kessel, herb ellis on the same bill at a place called Fat tuesday's on 17th and 3rd in manhatten.Jaco was there one night hang out with bernelli lagrene [i think i spelled that right?]jazz great's are willing to give private lessons these day's cause well ya know jazz does not pay all that well.i saw Joe Beck play at the local library not long ago and there where maybe 10 people there and the show was free. | |

| THE GUITAR PLAYER'S THREAD Posted: 4/24/2005 4:39:29 PM | Yeah, every time Herb was in town for a gig or the Jazz festival, ....he'd wave and say, "Hey Richard, ..come over here..."
Through him I got to meet and shake hands with guys like, Charlie Byrd, Barney Kessel, Joe Pass, Oscar Peterson, Clark Terry, Red Callender, Ed Thigpen, ....man!
I met Tal Farlow several times and got invited to sit at his table when he played the local jazz clubs, as classy a gent as you could ever hope to meet, .....he had the biggest hands and longest fingers I've ever seen, ....this allowed him to play all that close interval stuff and voice chords like pianists Bill Evans, McCoy Tyner, etc. ......
For some the '80's were about hair and spandex, ....for me it was about meeting giants.
I think one of the greatest highlights of that time was meeting Charlie Parker's trumpet player, Red Rodney, and having dinner with him and his wife. One thing was consistant with all of these gentleman, ...they were ALL beautiful and sincere folk, .....no ego, ....no B.S.
There are only a few "greats" still with us, .......I see any opportunity to meet them or see them perform as a precious gift, .....a piece of history.
|
| THE GUITAR PLAYER'S THREAD Posted: 4/24/2005 5:02:06 PM | | Small world.... just came on here for a sec..... and lates talking about Charlie Parkers trumpet player..... and guess who im listening to.... | CHEAP !!!!!!!!! Posted: 4/25/2005 6:44:41 AM | | Not following the thread conversations here, but back to the main question, here's an interesting little story: Back in the early '90s I went to a guitar trade-show, fell in love with a beautiful hand-made fretless bass and bought it for I think around $1600. It was made by a guy named Greg Curbow. Anyway, I never mastered the fretless and it mostly sat around looking pretty and so finally, a few years later and in need of cash, I sold it for $900. About a year later, I was at a music store to hear a bassist named Adam Nitti (fantastic, has been written about in Bass Player Mag). He was promoting his CDs AND Curbow basses, which by that time, were being advertised in Bass Player magazine. Well, Greg Curbow was there and I found out that the bass I bought was THE FIRST HE EVER MADE. THE FIRST CURBOW BASS!!! And because it was his baby, he had managed to follow it, trying to recover it for himself. He said it got sold to and from this person and that person, but had by now been on tour with some major group, which I can't remember right now. I wanna say the Rolling Stones, but I know it wasn't them, but it was some major group like them. Anyway, I had the first Curbow and sold it for $900! No telling what it was worth. What a fool. Oh, well ... | |

| THE GUITAR PLAYER'S THREAD Posted: 4/29/2005 1:27:03 AM | Ok dudes here is something to try
I was looking at the rig schmatics of alot of big touring guitarists
the ultimate tone 3 amps i.e
left wet-------------------centre dry--------------------------------right wet
if you have a great sounding tube amp use as your dry the left and right can be anything pretty much................solidstate even eric johnson uses a p.a. left/right-------need to be 100% wet----->as in your delay repeats/reverb etc
try it it is like surround sound for guitar and you keep the initial attack of the the dry signal too instead of taking a tube amp and neuturing it with an effects loop
mic the dry to send to the wet or use a thd hot plate (it has a line out seperate from it's speaker out and you do not have too attenuate if you do not want)
|
| THE GUITAR PLAYER'S THREAD Posted: 4/29/2005 8:09:15 AM | | sounds like quite the rig you have there guitarman100. where ya going to fit the rest of the band? | |

| THE GUITAR PLAYER'S THREAD Posted: 4/29/2005 1:07:55 PM | this set-up can be done with 3- 1X12's

1x12--------------------2x12-------------------------------1x12

| THE GUITAR PLAYER'S THREAD Posted: 4/29/2005 1:38:42 PM | | Hey guitar man.... we'd have fun on stage..... no room though...... my bass rig on stage for medium to large shows is 2 Peavey Combo 115's..... 300 watts each.... with a 1X18 extension cab from one of the amps and a 4X10 extension cab from the other combo. What a sound....need to just scrap the Peavy's one of these days and go with Q.S.C. power amps, with a wall of 8X10 ampegs! | |
|
| THE GUITAR PLAYER'S THREAD Posted: 4/29/2005 2:13:41 PM | yes that would be good
I just bought a Peavey 6505 + which was the eddie van halen signature model it is awesome
people give peavey a bad rap but, if you buy their top end stuff it is pretty good for the dough
|
| THE GUITAR PLAYER'S THREAD Posted: 4/29/2005 2:53:28 PM | | My "ex" wound up selling my guitars, long story there. Anyway, had to Rickenbackers, 4 and 5 string basses. Great instruments. But, when i started to replace this stuff, kinda fell in love with the Peavy stuff. Play a 4 and 5 now, have been looking at one of their 6 string basses, and love the Combo 115 amps. Great sound, and very versatile. Comapny sure has made some good products over the years, and are very affordable..... hey.... is this a plug for Peavy or what? lol | |
