late™ Posted: 5/6/2005 3:32:21 PM There's only three I'll reccomend: "The Radial JX2 Switchbone" and the, "Lehle Dual A/B" .... both use 100% discreet circuitry and are of highest quality.
guitarman100 If you look at the spring cavity of your guitar.......... you install a block of wood to make it so the trem does not pull up
Late and Guitarman..... Dudes....thanks a million man !!! i have more to ask and have more to ask of....to keep the thread interesting. anyway.... just got off work....need sleep men...

| THE GUITAR PLAYER'S THREAD Posted: 5/9/2005 9:20:34 AM | | HELP! I need some input from you guys. Over this past weekend I played a P.R.S. Santana S.E. (these are imports), A Brian Moore i81, and a Parker PM-10. Im looking to add a new guitar to my "arsenal". Bear in mind, im primarilly a bass player, and dont want to spend oodles of cash since im saving for a Ken Smith Bass (The BSR 6MS to be exact). I currently own a Martin Stinger and a Fernandez electric. Just looking for something a little different, and the guitars I mentioned can be had for under 500 U.S. Thats about my budget on a new electric so am looking for any feedback on these guitars, as well as any others in that price range. Dont know if this matters or not, but the guitar I purchase will also have 12-56 strings put on them. Thanx for any input! | |

| THE GUITAR PLAYER'S THREAD Posted: 5/9/2005 10:17:48 AM | P.R.S. Santana S.E. i played oneof these thought it was a peice of crap. for your budget why not look at some american made strats.they are not bad and well made. | |
|
| THE GUITAR PLAYER'S THREAD Posted: 5/9/2005 10:27:02 AM | | An American made Strat for under 500? Where? The American Strat retails for 1256.99.... around here is selling for about 850. American Deluxe is 1427 retail, street at about 950. Most of the stuff im seeing in the 500 range is purely Mexican made. Have also considered a Carvin Bolt at 569. | |

| THE GUITAR PLAYER'S THREAD Posted: 5/9/2005 10:49:32 AM | | Found the site... thanx..... am looking to buy new though. Looks like theres a lot of good deals there! | |
|
| THE GUITAR PLAYER'S THREAD Posted: 5/9/2005 3:04:06 PM | Well I would suggest used In the guitar market you can get amazing deals..........and at the end of the day a guitar is a piece of wood...........meaning if it is in good shape then.......... It is in good shape A neck on a guitar will tend to warp within the first year or 2 so if you find a guitar that is 5 yrs or more then you are probably good used guitars may have some nice mods on them used guitar might even be set-up/broke in better I have bought used strats for 1/4 of new price.........
if you must go new then really play all of those guitars and find the one that feels the best............ This seems straight forword but I have found many buy with their eyes which is a mistake
And look at the specs on each ie the brian moore is a cool guitar but, it has a neck radius of 15(very flat across the front)............. you may find this uncomfortable (I had a usa Brian Moore I changed the neck radius to a 10.... rounder more comfortable get one with bigger frets if you like to bend notes
the PRS has a shorter scale length of 25 a litte squishy past the 12th fret
close your eyes and play them which one feels like home? a comfortable pair of jeans? they are all made in Korea so the name now really means not so much cause they are all manufactuered by a third party company
ok here is a tip................ EBAY ---->look at "WARMOTH" (really well made /usa/washington state/)Licenced strats/teles/les pauls a completed one goes for $400-$500 everyday and with better wood, better components.........allow a budget of $100 for your local(good) tech to tweak it when your get it this my friend is your best best value
If you see one you like ,send me the link ....I can walk you through it

| THE GUITAR PLAYER'S THREAD Posted: 5/9/2005 10:30:08 PM | stevens ebay was down I will check again if it is the teal one that came out 3 yrs ago with noiseless p.u. silver decal fender style floyd
then it is a nice guitar i will check again
did you look at warmoth? you can get the same guitar or better usally at 2/3 the cost of a "real" fender some of them even have fake fender stickers on them.......... lol at the end of the day they are just trees I don't think there are special fender trees?..............just wood and a $200-$300 sticker on the headstock if you buy a "real" fender
I tell my customers this because it is the truth

|
| THE GUITAR PLAYER'S THREAD Posted: 5/10/2005 4:20:46 AM | yes i did look at the wormoth's and i am still looking.you have personally had experience with their stuff? i sold a strat not long ago to help some kid out,now i am looking for a replacment. i love maple necks and fingerboards fat frets and single coil. does Mark Knopfler play fender's?no.lol if roy bucchanan was alive? i love guitar,s that are tested workhorses.checkout stevensguitars dot com.lol. here u will find some nice stuff. | |

| THE GUITAR PLAYER'S THREAD Posted: 5/10/2005 7:42:56 AM | | @ Guitarman..... Thanx very much for your input. Over the years I have found one thing you said to be very true..... never buy the guitar on looks. If theres one that really catches my eye, thats the one i will play last! On bass guitars, i do like the larger radius. Im not so picky on 6 strings. We have a dealer here in town that is discontinuig the Brian Moore line of guitars and I also thought it was a cool guitar, although, like you said, thought the frets could be bigger. Thats also one of the reasons i really dont want to buy online, as I want to be able to play the guitar before I buy it. Unfortunately, the Ken Smith bass im going to purchase this fall is coming direct from them, but playing them over the years ive found there quality to be superior, and have never had one in my hands that did not feel right. Since I made the post yesterday asking for input, Guitar Center has called and am interviewing there tomorrow in Pro Sound and Recording, so for the time being, im going to hold off, as if I do hire in, its my understanding there employee discounts are tremendous. And if I do hire in, will have to get a part time job just to support my "gear" habit! Thanx Again! | |

| THE GUITAR PLAYER'S THREAD Posted: 5/10/2005 10:34:10 AM | I gotta' tell you bro', G-man is right on this one, .....used and bruised. I have only a few guitars bought "new", .....they aren't the gems of the bunch. It's a lot safer to pick up something at least 3 or 4 years old, ....if the wood's gonna' "shift" it's gonna' do it in the first few years.
Stevens, Warmoth stuff is as good or better than Fender, ....it's all CNC machined and done to your specific "needs" re: fret size, radius, wood, neck profile. I have a fretless Jazz bass neck, rosewood neck/ebony FB that I ordered to replace a custom neck that twisted, ....5 years later, ...perfect.
|
| THE GUITAR PLAYER'S THREAD Posted: 5/10/2005 7:12:10 PM | ebay item #7321030644 these warmoth guitars look awesome, possibilty's are endless.i've been threw so many axes.i can make any guitar sound good from 25 years of experience of playing 10 years hard core with my band. i need a workhorse.i love semihollow body teles maple necks and fb's semi scalloped with the fattest frets i can find.Guitarman what you got?is it time i build my own? i was told awhile ago good wood is getting harder to find as the japanese are buying all the finest woods.i have some vintage axes that i don,t play. | |

| THE GUITAR PLAYER'S THREAD Posted: 5/10/2005 8:52:38 PM | STEVENS
--YES the time tested thing I see that all the time Mark knofler also plays a pensa shur.............a very refined instrument back in the day there were not that many great electrics so people played Fender ,so did I they cut their teeth on the feel of those and it is hard to change but ,from an engineering stand point the original trem sucks("the out of tune bar") do you think if hendrix was alive today he would still play that creme strat live as his main guitar? and on endorsement deals The guitar that you buy and The actual one the STAR plays are 2 very different things trust me on this one
ok saw the teal fender................... that is the one I am talking about................tried one here in Edmonton 2 yrs ago.It was like $1700 canadian they rule very much like a jeff beck signature model the combination of the LSRnut AND the fender style floyd (locking but no fine tuners_is amazing ie it stays in tune when you use the bar fat strat means the humbucker(the only way to go for a bridge pickup
The warmoth looks very nice too ....maybe more then you have to pay not a fan of wilkenson trems.....they are aluminum and prone to break ie keep watching that section you may be able to find something for $400
STEVENS .........it is time here is my recomendation: I custom build for people and I have similiar tastes to you so there is that.........
1)Go to the Warmoth site read about the neck specs to get a feel for it
2)dunlop 6000 is the largest fret I know of I show my customers a neck done with it and they say "holy sh*t" every time may negate the need for scalloping I do a scalloping thing ........slight and gradual from 9th fret up very important that whatever you choose starts with the right fret size because refrets are $$$$$$$$
3) no finish on the neck is my preferrence.........may not be a good idea in a humid climate
4) stay away from the "compound radius" thing it is a great idea but not executed as slick as I would like If you like vintage fender get a rounder radius fretboard ie rounder7.25(old tele) - 9.5 flater(modern strat)
any questions on components let me know
I do assembly/ custom mods for customers that have warmoth parts.........here is where "the magic" lives
many people buy a bunch of parts an bolt them together and think they will have a great guitar. Then they bring it to me and I make it great(shameless plug) I carry tons of hardware new and used too

|
| THE GUITAR PLAYER'S THREAD Posted: 5/10/2005 8:58:58 PM | it stays in tune when you use the bar
I have '50's Klusons on my main strat (strung "right"), a '50's style bridge ("dremelled" so there are no "hang-ups"), and a bone nut (cut "perfectly") .......... it NEVER goes out of tune, even if I dive bomb, .....physics does the trick.
I've never liked the gizmos for keeping strats in tune, Leo had it right, ......if you have a "GOOD" set-up, sounds more like a strat too.......
YMMV | |
|
| THE GUITAR PLAYER'S THREAD Posted: 5/10/2005 9:14:14 PM | LATE-
I have just been working on several old strats
having a bridge with 6 screws where the bridge rests inbetween the threads is just bad engineering and not the most dependable
I still open to new ideas a better trem That still sounds like a strat is the fender style floyd(no fine tuners, locks the ball ends,2 knife fulcrum points, still looks "vintage straty" too
I myself am not into vintage just because that is how they used to do it and it worked for...............fill in the blank
If I reconize a better design that would better serve me in the field I will go towards that idea and there has been alot of inovation in the last 20 years

| THE GUITAR PLAYER'S THREAD Posted: 5/10/2005 9:27:29 PM | | Thanks for all the input guys. Of all things, a friend of mine stops by tonight with his 78 Hagstrom, which hes had since new, and gave the same advice as you guys did. Turns out he knows where i can get one of these Hags for a pretty fair price. The model I played is the Swede, and what a great guitar. Hes had this since new, and said it took about 4 years for it to really break in. He plays it through 2 Fender Twins, circa 1972. The model thats up for sale is a 1980 Swede, and the guy is asking 600 for it. Not being to familiar with Hagstroms, is this a pretty good price. Ive only seen pics of this guitar, and from the pics, it looks to be in outstanding shape. Any input appreciated. | |

Me neither bro', I just learned how to set 'em up to work "right" as they were designed, years ago, .....I like the way they work that way, in fact, .....some of the gizmos take away some of the "tricks" you can do on a bone stock strat (set up "right").
I have no problems with new tricks, as long as they don't offer diminished returns.

I love old "Hags", ....I wish I could find an old "Jimmy".
My only advice is to steer clear of the "bolt-on" Swedes, .....they aren't the same guitar.
BTW, .....Hagstrom's back in business......
Hmmmmm..... my first guitar was a brand new '67 Hagstrom III, .....wish I still had it.....

| THE GUITAR PLAYER'S THREAD Posted: 5/10/2005 9:47:47 PM | | Thanks Late. I know this is a neck thru, and im looking forward to playing it . I remember my first guitar as well. About a 1964 or 65 Sears Silvertone with the amp built into the case. If my memory serves me, seems i read once where Danelctro made Sears guitars for a while. My second electric was about a 55 or 56 Supro, creme colored, with a leather pickguard. I believe the amp was about a 35 watt Supro as well, 2 tone blue and white. That Supro at the time seemed like it weighed a couple of tons! | |
|
| THE GUITAR PLAYER'S THREAD Posted: 5/10/2005 10:40:53 PM | | IMO, the Swedes I've tried anyway? ......Gibson WISHES they could make a Les Paul this good. | |
|
| THE GUITAR PLAYER'S THREAD Posted: 5/11/2005 1:58:18 AM | G man and late.... dude/s , what do you think of whammy pedals ???
g man....if i blocked/lock my bridge....then i would have to use a whammy pedal.....
|
| THE GUITAR PLAYER'S THREAD Posted: 5/11/2005 3:20:23 AM | G-man's "blocking" isn't the same thing as what is usually ment by blocking(wedging a piece of wood on the bridges "inertia block" to render it "hard tail"), ....what he's talking about is what is also referred to as "Zero-ing" a trem, ....it means you can't raise pitch, but you can still lower it, and there is also sufficient tension to hold "tune" better during bends.
As for whammy pedals? ...... I don't like taking my signal out of "analog", once out, you can't get back what you lose.
|
| THE GUITAR PLAYER'S THREAD Posted: 5/11/2005 8:45:34 AM | | @ Late.... Just got in from checking the Hagstrom out. Beautiful guitar. This is going to put me 100 over budget on a guitar, but..am going to purchase anyway! In response to Gibson wishing they could build them like Hagstrom.... I think from what ive seen, theres another company out there doing much better than Gibson as well. We have a small store here in town that carries the Heritage guitars. They also look like a fine piece of work, and the couple of people I know who have them say the same thing. And its my understanding also that Heritage was formed when Gibson left Kalamazoo Michigan, and went to Nashville. Guess a few of the Gibson employees stuck around and formed there own company. | |
