| THE GUITAR PLAYER'S THREAD Posted: 5/20/2005 7:56:16 PM | Wolf marshall site looked pretty cool, but I'm really looking for a place I can jam in a chat window live with other people. On marl Seal site all you did was plug your guitar into your computer and jam with other people it was fun as hell.I would think there is a place you could do that.If not lets make one and get rich! | |
|
| THE GUITAR PLAYER'S THREAD Posted: 5/21/2005 9:43:03 AM | Ibk
You could also place an ad in your local paper and find a band.............jam with them go play some gigs ............ meet the hot waiteress at the bar...............go out with her
well maybe that is just what I would do
|
| THE GUITAR PLAYER'S THREAD Posted: 5/21/2005 3:57:57 PM | I could do that, if my amp didn't blow a few weeks ago.I'm playing through my computer now, its all I have. | |

| THE GUITAR PLAYER'S THREAD Posted: 5/21/2005 9:33:14 PM | | It an old crate amp.Its actually weird, I forgot to turn it off.I was sitting at my computer when it started making a loud noise, i got up to look and it was smoking, then i saw a little flame and pulled the plug.I was just happy that i was there and didn't leave. | |

| THE GUITAR PLAYER'S THREAD Posted: 5/21/2005 9:58:41 PM | Solid State?
...... disposable.
Tube?
Sounds like it could be bias failure...... it might be worth looking at if it isn't a layered wave-soldered circuit board.
Either way, it sounds like repair would cost more than it's worth.

| THE GUITAR PLAYER'S THREAD Posted: 5/23/2005 9:36:34 AM | Late I have a marshall jcm 800(jmp1980) head Used a power soak ..............popped something
the pre-amp section is good........... I bypassed the power amp to check the fuses are good so I popped something in the output section the power tubes are all working so it is a component in the power amp section
any ideas?

| THE GUITAR PLAYER'S THREAD Posted: 5/23/2005 10:29:21 AM | Hmmmmm.... remember when I called "attenuators", = "Tranny-toasters"?
I hope it's not something that $, but the OT is something I would get checked.

| THE GUITAR PLAYER'S THREAD Posted: 5/23/2005 8:02:56 PM | Sup guitman, there's an amp tech just west of town who does good work. I can give you his contact info if you like.
As for my rig
Ibanez RG2120X Prestige Ibanez IC-400 Iceman POD 2.0 Digitech StudioQuad 4 Digital Music Corp Ground Controller Pro Peavey Classic 50 410
I'm still rather partial to my strats though
I'm also a luthier and ran my own music store for 5 years.

| THE GUITAR PLAYER'S THREAD Posted: 5/23/2005 8:29:32 PM | small world dude

| THE GUITAR PLAYER'S THREAD Posted: 5/23/2005 10:29:09 PM | Late
any simple test I can do on the tranformer
I have been in many amps before but ,all I got is a radio shack volt/ohms meter
2 trannys inside is the output the bigger or smaller one?
any links to jcm 800 for dumbies?
|
| THE GUITAR PLAYER'S THREAD Posted: 5/23/2005 11:08:38 PM | Hmmmmmm..... it's really hard to check a tranny unless it's live, .....inside that Marshall is enough juice to kill.
A few things to check (keep in mind, even unplugged there's enough juice in there to kill
The OT is likely the smaller one, it will be hooked up to the power tube sockets and the speaker outs.
Take a look inside the chassis, I think there are some fuses underneath, check for bad solder joints at the impedence selector, eyeball it for burnt resistors or any other signs of arcing (tube sockets)
If you know how to discharge caps, do so, ....if not? Don't touch ANYTHING on the circuit board with any part of YOU.
Power it up (under load) with a line in from a cd player or some other line level source, and use a plastic "chopstick" (we call this a spudger) and move some of the wires around, and listen.
Do NOT put your hands in there.
Lastly, hit the output tranny with a deadblow (rubber hammer) fairly hard a few times, and listen.
If you get sound when you smack the OT, it's probably a toasted tranny.........
Really, you should take it to a qualified tech, if it's the OT, it shouldn't cost more than $150 parts and labour.
Beware the "tranny toasters" ........
good luck bro' ...... do not zap yourself.

| THE GUITAR PLAYER'S THREAD Posted: 5/24/2005 10:37:51 AM | Late thanks for the info
I have watched my tech in my amp he discharged the caps
I think he have a alligator clip to ground and touched one of the cap leads
Is this correct? | |

| THE GUITAR PLAYER'S THREAD Posted: 5/24/2005 5:38:09 PM | Ok..... this is a guitar players thread, but... maybe someone can help me, as it applies to midi. I have a junk Roland keyboard that finally went. It was the EP 5, and I was using it for my Alesis Quadrasynth Rackmount Sound Module. The keyboard just gave out, nothing happens with any of the keys I hit. Now, I know for a fact my midi cables are good, as well as the sound module, as I hooked that up through my Yamaha Keyboard. Im looking for a new keyboard for the module, and most of the ones ive found only have midi outs. That is, unless I want to spend 400 or more for a keyboard, which i dont. Can anyone help me as to a possible midi patchbay, or some other way to hook this up. And i might add, the usb midi interface connection is not needed. I know one option is just to go buy a cheap Casio, as they have midi I/O, which is really all i need.... but.... I hate Casio! I know that M-Audio makes a pretty decent keyboard controller for about 149, but, it only has midi out. Thanx Late, or Guitarman, as I figure it will be one of you two who answer! lol..... You guys seem to know pretty much anything that is asked..... regardless. | |

| THE GUITAR PLAYER'S THREAD Posted: 5/24/2005 5:48:24 PM | I use what is called a "BFSD" (big f'ing screwdriver).
1) Take the clip lead, cut it, solder a 1k - .5 watt resistor (to keep the sparks down), in-line and wrap with heat-shrink or electrical tape.
2) Before you unplug the amp, turn standby to on, unplug amp, leave standby "on", let the amp sit for as long as possible
3) Clip one end to ground, and one to the BFSD.
4) Short the "+" leg of each cap with the BFSD, short the "-" leg too, just for safety's sake
.....repeat (those suckers will re-charge from each other).
5) Use your meter to check for juice, repeat "4)" , let it sit a while, check again.
6) repeat "5)" 'til you're confident the caps are discharged.
Now that you've done this, handle the circuit board as if it's still LIVE!
Do NOT put both hands in the chassis, EVER!
ALWAYS keep one hand in your pocket, work with the other (this helps decrease the chance of any stray juice going through your heart).
Never assume this is "safe", always be aware that these puppies can fry you.

If it's only a controller, why do you need more than MIDI-out?
|
| THE GUITAR PLAYER'S THREAD Posted: 5/24/2005 6:17:09 PM | | Ok.... just unplugged the "midi in" from my yamaha keyboard. No sounds. So, im assuming I need to have both plugged in...... I/O from the module as well As I/O from the keyboard or controller to complete the signal path. Oh no...... unless something else is wrong! | |
