I have a power house strat which sounds wicked cool, I love it. My fav is fender...or ones I build...Hammer...actually are good, cheap, but good, great for someone on a 300-400 budget. Hmm Dan Electros are cool, Im not much for les pauls though because they don't have enough high range for me, great lows and mids though...plus I hit my arm on the knobs...

I have a Crate full stack...120 rms...gv1200 or something...I would like a blue voodoo or a crate tube stack, but we all bust a nut for Mesa "Boogie.....Fender Custom amps are killer too. I use 10's to13's for strings...always tune down, tune down and tune again...lol

I have been playing for 12 years...since 14.......no lessons
Music is great!

got a good question about feedback in an f hole style guitar I would like to share:

Answering your feedback problem with your 1956 gibson es 225:

nice old gibson you have
if it is stock leave it my friend ............1956 wow

it sounds like one of two problems

if the feedback is squeally and hi sounding
your pickups are microphonic-which can be fixed by:
wax potting the originals-if they are the original 1956 p>u> do not do it leave them!

buy a new set that are wax potted
like seymour duncan jazz in the neck
depending on style you play a medium output in the bridge

if the feedback is lo and wolfy sounding
then it is the body resonance from the the f holes
like an acoustic will do when plugged in

solution:
plug the holes -does not really effect the electric sound

so try these and email me

Look I know nothing about Guitars. However if GAS is coming out, then dude you have a serious problem and no I don't want to be around to smell it. Which end? Wait let me guess.

Now looky here. I have been playin air guitar for 10 years and never had that problem, well ok maybe a few times when I sat down but dude I went to the doctor and I must say I don't have to worry about Air guitar acuisition syndrome. 2 years? Wow that's too much Gas if you ask me and you wonder why you here. When the gas stops the chicks will come, trust me.
Just trying to help is all.

well, I've been playing for about 10 years with nothing but overdrive and reverb, and that seems to be enough for me. I tend to agree with Muddy Waters: "If you need all kinds of big amplifiers and fancy electronics to make your guitar talk, then hell, you don't play no d*mn blues"
just my two cents

I agree lately I have been running a similiar set-up
as a studio musician I need to have different sounds
many of the tone I go for my be just
an overdrive---->bit of delay------>reverb----->amp

I just change the flavors

Warren Dimartini rules and so does Frankie Wilsex of Arcade. Have you ever heard of The Eye CD by King Diamond? There is some real kick A guitar playin going on there. I was blown away, or even Dio Lock Up The wolves CD. Better yet the guitar player for Scropions really blows me away. Dokken..Mr. Scary guitar solo ever hear of it? Now that is cool. I play just like these people when I take out my air guitar and it blows me away that I can crank out such tunes. LOL.

Yes we can be friends but you must let me hear you play. I love guitar. Guitar is better than any man because I can play with the stings and make music all day and I don't have to worry
about any guitar cheating on me. Well ok my last guitar may have cheated. It left me and I don't know where it went. LOL

The guitar I play most is a Les Paul Standard...man I love that sound. I find that most effects tend to strip away that sweetness, and mask the true tone color. In music, as in all things, I prefer true un-adulterated beauty...that can only come from a direct connection with the instrument. ie; popularity of acoustic/unplugged formats. Fav. acoustic guitar: Alvarez Yairi DY45

@noodler

Yes once you had a strat you can't go back
normal flat top style guitars
I had a godin acs multitac......with the guitar synth they lack the contour because it is a hole body

they sound nice
but lack the body(soundwise) of a true acoustic
which always bummed me out

much prefer the sound of a small acoustic miced up internally
but will feedback at low sound levels

the pros and cons.....

well.. here is the story..my lil bro and his wife got me a gift card for guitar center.. 50 bones.. so were comeing back from my dad house from christmas and decide to stop in saginaw becasue his wife is in to scrap booking and there is a store she likes there.. then i heard angels sing.HAAAA ... there is was right next door to the scrap booking place.. GUITAR CENTER!! I looked like a little kid peeking out the back seat fogging up the windows with big eyes.
it was like a dream.. i walked around in there looking for the EVH phase 90.. nothing.. played with a couple of things.. still nothing stuck out as mine...then.. i peeked behind the counter and OH!!! there is was.. like a jewel waiting to be picked.. i told the guy that is mine! so with the 50 doller gift card it cost me like 60 dollers.. so far i love it.

one question.. were should i hook it up for best sound.. before any effects? after any effect or use it alone?

yes your right the DX is a lot better then the standard one.. i tried that one and did not like it... once again a guitarmans pick... thanks dude.

@jimi77

usally I put it first
It depends on the head room of the effects after........if they have none than the will sqish your dynamics

suggestions
-stevie ray single coil(neck)semi clean/jazz
-drive at 8 or 9 0'clock
-mode--turbo
-level at or near full out
-tone 12'oclock or less

roll your git vol. to about 5 or 6...........in this setting 10 should be really loud and robust

this type of setting makes you pickups ultra sensitive to your playing
ride the volume stevie did this all the time changing settings like 25 time in a song live

this pedal is a good clean boost pedal
the ts9dx has alot more headroom then most boost/distortion pedals

2)
put a distortion pedal before the ts9 dx
kick it in for solos for massive sustain
the trick do not max the gain settings on ethier pedal
this keeps noise floor lower
both pedals on are what is called gain "stage cascading" the basis of boogies
a good noise gate could come in handy here

3) got a good shred tone on your amp alone
kick in the ts9dx for massive sustain

really pay attention to the mode switch and what it does.........
ts9-slight bass loss ........treble boost
+- ts9 plus bass
hot- bass boost mid boost
turbo- vol. bass boost

turbo is great cause it kinda simulates the thick sound you get from a les paul when you are actually playing a strat style with humbucker

mine is actually manufactuered by MAXON
I looked at the circuit board
which is awesome look into MAXON the are well respected
any more questions?

i will try the settings you mentiond. there is a lot to tweek so anything to get a understanding of it is much appeciated. so what is a good noise gate and what exatly dose it do ? i noticed if you give it to much gain or turn some of the knobs to high.. it is hard not to get feed back if you not playing..it dose sound great when your playing . on the book i have on guitar effects i was looking at some set up and they always have the over drive right after the guitar.. but they only have a few set ups..

thank again for your wisdom.

This is taking the thread in a totally different direction, but I'm interested in getting into flamenco music and I'm wondering if anybody knows of a good value nylon string to get into. I've got a LaPatrie etude with a solid cedar top, but I'm looking to step up. Any advice would be appreciated.

Ask guitarman!--lol--no really, ask him. I played around with a really sweet Martin nylon string guitar a couple weeks ago. Really smooth tone and effortless fretboard action, although the neck was a bit fatter than I'm used to. still, a real sweet guitar.

A noise gate -it keeps your guitar quiet when you use lots of gain

it listens to the signal if it is below a certain level it shuts the vol to 0
if it is above(when you are playing) it stays open
needed device for high gain shredding
good ones
_rockman smartgate
_rocktron hush
-digitech 2101-just buy this dude and you will be done cause it is a multi effect processor
a really good one-cheap on ebay like $250
mine was $1800 canadian new in 1996
you put this in the effect loop on your Marshall and you will freak

the feedback you are hearing
a)is it good feedback-- the strings are vibrating .causing the sound
b)is it bad feedback---you hold the strings down it still squeals(microphonic pickup)
c) is it 60 cycle hum---you hold down the strings and you hear humming static because of tons of gain-------noise gate needed

@gbear

I play all guitars
I have owned various nylon string guitars
_godin acs multi tac- ok
-1965 Gibson nylon--check ebay like $275-$325 all solid wood great tone
-yamahas-lower end ones
your le patrie is great for the dough......
my suggestion:
-find your price range
-try ones above your price range
i.e. the best
1)figure out what makes them better
2)find one in your price range that sounds as close to the awesome one

--->
be very mindful of intonation on a classical
if it has just a straight saddle you will have tuning problem in the upper register
really check the tuning fret by fret(w/ a tuner) on one you are considering to buy...

I like cutaway models myself

Thanks for the info guitarman.

That's a great tip on the intonation, I didn't realize it was such a problem on classicals. I just finished reading the whole thread, and you are one serious gearhead! Thanks for sharing the knowledge.

@gbear

Thanks dude
I do it for a living so yes I am a gear freak
intonation on a classical is super important
and often overlooked cause traditionally the saddle is not compensated
do not let a sales person smooth this point over
I also record bands for a living being in tune is everything
when trying classicals out .......maybe they have a peterson strobe(see early in forum) in house you can borrow to check the intonation

@jimi77

the digitech 2101
does every thing

sounds alot better than the new digital stuff
like the line 6
