| THE GUITAR PLAYER'S THREAD Posted: 10/4/2005 10:17:14 PM | welcome back jimi77 you should come see us here more often...
yes ,the vai video rules so much energy in the performances you should see him on the
eric clapton dvd ????????? the blues festival one????? wow !!!!!
I guess I am bias though because, I am finally getting sick of watching straight blues
you guys can hate me all you want .......but ya I have watched the traditional blues guys for 25 yrs and it is becoming a bit of a snooze fest
atleast: jeff beck vai satch john mclaughlin scott henderson etc are still breaking new ground
I am sticking to my rule: of not learning blues licks whenever possible 1)-they have been done a million times by real blues guys 2)-I am trying to find my own voice

| THE GUITAR PLAYER'S THREAD Posted: 10/5/2005 6:40:32 AM | Fender mexican strat, yes it was cheap but it still sounds great, way better than My peavy III nitro. I also have a Ibanez acoustic with a pick-up.
Peavy renown 2 12" combo, and a v-amp.
seems like every VH1 video I watch there is a fender strat or telecaster in there, they have a great tone and great neck. I love em.

| THE GUITAR PLAYER'S THREAD Posted: 10/5/2005 3:25:11 PM | thanks guitarman.. good to be back.. I love playing the blues but your right in you need to find your own voice and own vibe.. I have so many influances and like to mix them..
now guitarman.. remember i have seen mr via live in concert on the G 3 tour.. with joe satreini and eric johnson.. cliffs of dover was awesome.. but he is a bit dry on stage no stage presents at all.. steve had tons of it.. | |

| Question for you re gear Posted: 10/5/2005 7:36:53 PM | What would you guys recommend for a cheap(ish) axe? I've got my own computer-based rig which I use to make music in the ebm/industrial vein and would like to start adding into some guitar, mostly heavy rhythmic stuff. I've toyed with the guitar on and off in the past and have owned a few. I guess I'm looking for recommendations on how cheaply I can get something to DI into my machine (all fx processing apart from intentionally overdriving a preamp would be virtual) that'll give me good crunch for rhythmic stuff and also be playable for fooling around. Obviously I'm not interested in (I don't think?) multitudes of switchable pickup configurations, etc -- no frills. I realize this is a *really* lame question, but I'd appreciate suggestions. I've been looking at the Epiphone SGs.
Thanx, BRiaN | |

| Question for you re gear Posted: 10/5/2005 8:58:16 PM | sycophant
great question here is some suggestions: the sg is cool if you don't get the cheapest one cause the pickups suck for distortion
get anything with a humbucker even used on ebay ibanez rg strat with a humbucker anything with a floyd too and block it so it does not moveuse the fine tuners to get really in tune any 'super strat' jackson schecter etc tons used on ebay $200-$250
virtual amps on computers are..............ok at best amplitube is cool but you cannot hear the distortion while you lay the part down...lame
go on ebay and buy a
digitech genisis one .......used $50 it is a line 6 pod knock off they sound great for what you are doing ---direct
if you follow my suggestions you will have sonic bliss I do this for a living dude I will not steer you wrong

| Question for you re gear Posted: 10/6/2005 1:32:38 AM | Vai is better then Satch.
Why is that even a delicate subject?
My gear:
-Les Paul studio. -wood finish Carvin neck-through-body with gold hardware and locking tuning pegs. Beautifull guitar. -Yamaha cg-170-ca. classical guitar. -Yamaha bass guitar. -Martin dreadnought acoustic.
Got some pedals and a crybaby. Nothing to write home about. Sold my marshall half stack a few years back, stopped playing in a band and haven't replaced it with a good quality stage amp yet.

| Question for you re gear Posted: 10/6/2005 7:28:35 AM | thanks for the 411, g-man.. much appreciated!
So, to reiterate, I want something with a humbucker and a Floyd Rose locking tremolo. Guess I'm really wondering how to avoid pickups that "suck for distortion", especially if I buy something sight-unseen off of eBay.
BTW, I'm running ASIO drivers with very low-latency with a semi-pro audio interface, so I've got a plethora of fx that I can use in almost (a few ms) realtime, but if I can get good nasty distortion for $50 in outboard, I'm all for that. Not familiar with Amplitube, though -- mebbe it doesn't even offer you the distortion in real time.
Guess I'm off to the music and pawn shops. Besides messing around with a guitar and trying out the action, any gotchas I should look out for?
Hey, if any of you guys do stuff in the same vein as me and would like to collaborate remotely (or live if you're near me) or have me remix, etc, let me know. I use primarily Cubase SX3 and Tracktion for sequencing. I've got a few bits and pieces of things at http://www.zebox.com/terminusest and a few things another place the URL for which POF filters so I can't post it here.

| Question for you re gear Posted: 10/6/2005 12:54:11 PM | sycophant
just the basic model of epiphone has pickups that aren't so great I am a guitar tech too I replace the pickups on them all the time they are not wax potted--(more noise)
EBAY IS YOUR FRIEND -(JUST MAKE SURE YOU ARE BUY A GUITAR YOU GOT A GOOD FEELING ABOUT) make sure the neck is straight the frets are not too worn -a decent guitar set-up should not be more than $50
I say get a Ibanez rg you get anything rg 450 or higher eg rg520 rg 770 etc
then you are good to go for some real industrial wack get a 7 string Ibanez rg they are also really well priced
washburn n4 or n2 is really nice too
schecter c1(and similiar models) prs(korean models)
----->I run like zero latency too it is not really suitable for guitar in my opinion and outboard is the only way that digitech genisis one is the one for the low $$$$ make sure it comes with adapter

| Question for you re gear Posted: 10/7/2005 9:56:40 PM | ^^ Great head, uses the same. I was curious what key you find it best to play blues in? I'm usally in the E or A and use the E pentatonic Blues scale: or the A pentatonic Blues scale:
For those that play blues, what scale do you use? | |
|
| Question for you re gear Posted: 10/7/2005 10:24:03 PM | probably
e for me
or maybe d i am trying to get away from the pentatonic and go for 3 note per string stuff like dorian mode kinda trying to be more legato
tuning the guitar to eflat or d is cool too | |
|
| Question for you re gear Posted: 10/7/2005 10:27:12 PM | | I also like d, but I like d on my accoustics, for some reason I just can't get the sound I'm looking for on my Bich and Warlock in a d. Any Suggestions with these type of axes? | |

|
| Question for you re gear Posted: 10/7/2005 11:16:52 PM | if u where to try to sinplify thing's gary would say the solo is in Aminor pentatonic | |
|
| Question for you re gear Posted: 10/7/2005 11:20:34 PM | atoneman
it depend on the sound you are looking for
on those guitars you need heavier strings to tune down to e flat or d try 10's or 11's d'darrio even makes 10.5's
if you want traditional blues i would suggest a strat or atleast a single coil pickup low gain on your amp but crank the master roll off your vol to about 6-7 play with that

|
| Question for you re gear Posted: 10/7/2005 11:53:42 PM | for blues. Booomers 11's.i never detune.except for open tunings. Be Carefull With a Fool - Johnny Winter . now ur talking traditional blues. done right. his first album titled - Johnny Winter . learn this tune and u got a life full of blues licks. the tab for this tune on the net is correct . i would use 12's or even 13'; if i was to tune down to efalt. try a capo for blues way up the neck.think Albert Collins.play threw a comp/limiter and tube screamer. did i mention?
