| Question for you re gear Posted: 10/9/2005 7:20:25 AM | Thanks guys for you responces, I was playing around last night with the tuning and amp settings. I have heavy picks for blues, and light picks for metal and speed (great for pic harmonics).
It's hard to say what the sound I'm looking for is, untill I find it, and I'm like "Yeah that's it" Does that make sence?

rewire your cab?........
nope you just match the OHMS switch on the back of the amp to your cabinet ie your cabinet is either 4,8,16 ohms(which refers to resistance the speakers create) the amp has these same ohms settings just adjust the switch on the back to match and you are good to go I use a Marshall cabinet with my peavey 6505+(this is the 2 channel head with seperate tone controls for each channel ........this is the one to get the other one ( 6505) shares the bass, mid, treble controls between channels) the 6505+ is the one to get because it is more versatile

"It's hard to say what the sound I'm looking for is, untill I find it, and I'm like "Yeah that's it" Does that make sence?"
yes l....... you can refer to tones of popular recordings when explaining what you are going for then I can recommend ways to get that tone.
2)go to the local guitar stores and try everything ie when trying an overdrive pedal
use a guitar and amp you are familiar with .......
try 5 or more overdrive pedals
in a ' guitar magazine shootout' style (back to back)
do this with guitars,amps.....etc

| Question for you re gear Posted: 10/9/2005 7:11:27 PM | so let me see if i understand what your saying.. if i got a tube head.. all i have to so is set the swicth on the head to macth the ohms of the speakers?
and there is no swicth on the cab right?
I know in a post a long time ago someone told me if i got a tube head i would have to rewire the cab.. and i was like.. AHHHHH!!! farg that.
my amp is sounding better and better.. i think, i am tweeking it more and more.. also i lined up the petals a lil differant. better sound.
still... one day.... TUBE.. i will have a TUBE head.

| Question for you re gear Posted: 10/9/2005 8:49:04 PM | I love the peavey heads, they put off such a great sound to the stack. I don't think you should have to rewire your tube. It took me close to 3yrs to realize that the order you set up your pedals plays a big part on the type of sound and the quality of sound you produce when using pedals.
Guitarman, thanks for your advice, I will give it a shot, and see where that leads.

| Question for you re gear Posted: 10/9/2005 10:14:49 PM | ok.. I'm most definitely not a guitar player (though I'll soon have an Ibanez RG in hand), but I know fx.. The order of your pedals will definitely have a significant impact on your sound. It may be helpful to anyone who's not in the know already to do some reading on mastering, etc, that talks about fx routing.
BTW, do you guitarist folks have a way of doing send fx? Like pedals that create aux busses? that would rawk.. with a capital AWK

| Question for you re gear Posted: 10/9/2005 11:06:27 PM | jimi you just adjust the switch on the head and you are done
sycophant
yes some amps have a parallel effects loop which is just like a send on a board (you can dial in just the amount of effected signal you want to hear with the dry)
suggested effect order:
compression-overdrive-chorus/flanger
place delay/reverb
AFTER THE PRE-AMP or in the effect loop of the amp this will give you the cleanest signal path

| Question for you re gear Posted: 10/10/2005 1:14:18 AM | using amps with 2 channels one clean one dirty rythym/lead. is it not the manufactors aim that u not use effects on the lead channel? i am currently looking at amps.i like the mesa boogie 30 watt amp with just the one channel.in my experience for live playing i just want the clean channel cause from there i use effects to shape my sound. i am using chorus / tube screamer/comp/crybaby/samson wireless into the clean channel on my marshall 100watt switched to 50 watt. is this the correct order?compresssion at the end of the signal? i love the 6505 212 combo.if i could find that amp for like 900$ i would get rite on it. any reveiws on the combo?the 6505 120 watt is way more power then i would ever use. the correct chain for effects is a good topic.can be confusing. | |

| Question for you re gear Posted: 10/10/2005 11:24:32 AM | stevens
I would suggest having your compression pedal first...........
if your comp. is in last place: - you kick in your overdrive it will clamp down on your dynamics almost all the time -if your chorus is on it may amplify the shooshy sound even if the gitar is not playing
I would suggest having your compression pedal first most touring pedalboard schematics I have read the compression appears first they are designed to compress THE GUITAR SIGNAL LEVEL at a certain vol. level or "grab the peak level" -having it first:
-yields a cleaner signal -keeps a good volume feed to the overdrive
this is all subjective though .... because having the compression after the overdrive can yeild some cool results with even volume but it will squish your dynamics most

| Question for you re gear Posted: 10/10/2005 11:35:30 AM | stevens
the 6505 combo is a very heavy amp to lift because it has really big transformers etc
I would still lean toward the head -because of the seperate tone controls per channel -a head and a seperate cabinet is easier to carry -this rig sounds better with a closed back 2x12 ps it might be just my head .... but, I thought the head sounded better than the combo
but ya nothing touches it in it's price range -I think it sounds ballsier than the new marshall tube stuff(In fact I am looking at selling my 1980 marshall jmp 5o watt head because I did an a/b with the 6505+ an I liked the 6505+ better) -It is like half the price of boogie stuff and alot more user friendly (I own 3 boogie amps I know)

I was looking at Kustom's acoustic 65 watt acoustic amp but I dunno if anyone else uses it. It doesnt cost a ton but I have played their other amps and they are halfway decent.
