| THE GUITAR PLAYER'S THREAD Posted: 11/11/2005 5:42:28 PM | I love digitech's stuff.. i have a few of there pedals.. some are great some are ok.. the best thing to do is go to your local guitar store and try things out.. see if they fit the sound your looking for..
I personaly have the RP2000, death metal, and synth wah pedals.. there all pretty good.. if i had to lose one it would be the death metal pedal..It's not as great as it could be.
one other thing to do is read the reviews on zzounds web sight and see what others say about the pedal..
Muhahaha!... tomarrow i open the shop i work at and i am bringing my crate GX-30m amp and charvel model 4 ax. there will only be a few of us their and it should be fun to crank it at work.. plus one guy wants me to show him some things..
Gman.. i deleated your email list... OH NO!!!! i was cleaning out my mail and nabbed it by mistake... if you still have it resend it... PLEASE!
also.. i got to pay the bills.. and all this talk is giving me the G.A.S.. bad..

Late would be the best to explain tube rectifier
see the mesa boogie site they have a page on it maybe cut and paste it here on the forum for all to see and learn
Digitech stuff is pretty good
some of the pedal series are not the best ie the early 90's pedals
early 80's stuff the performer series (18 volts----->2 9 volt batteries) are very cool (ebay) the larger floor processors are really good rp2000
my personal fav the rackmount dual tube preamp/processor---------> gsp 2101 is totally a pro piece (excellent value ---new $1200----used $280 ish on ebay ---everyone should have one) I have 2 they sound awesome in front of an amp or in the fx loop
the new digitech pedals look cool but the little budget digital all in one boxes maybe not so much
they reviewed the clapton and hendrix pedals in guitar player about 2 months ago the review might be on that site
harmony central is the best for reviews
(example search on google)(copy /paste)
digitech 2101 harmony central review
(guys check this one out I never steer you wrong)

that will take you there

| THE GUITAR PLAYER'S THREAD Posted: 11/13/2005 11:08:53 AM | | Since we're talking amps here, whats a good starter amp? I have the Dean "starter" package but the amp is lame. Volume, gain, bass, etc...just the basics. It sounds nothing like the amp where I take lessons. I checked out some Marshalls, and Crate's at the store but I'm looking at $250-300. Anything decent thats down around $200 or less or am I going to have to spend the money to get better sound? | |

| The guitar player's thread Posted: 11/13/2005 1:01:01 PM | I busted up my left wrist really bad a long time ago, and I cant play myguitars as well as I used to.:( I've got a mexican Fender Strat with a seymore Duncan Hotrails double coil pickup on it I play that through a lil 75w Fender JAM amp I also have an Epiphone Acuubass I have my moms 6 string and 12 string accoustics under my bed | |

If you know you are going to play guitar for some time to come
spend the $$$$$ you can always sell the amp if you take up another hobby
in the used market you could probably find something for $250-300
my advice is buy better than you need right now then you have something you can grow into
buy used and you will be able to resell it for what you bought it for win win

| THE GUITAR PLAYER'S THREAD Posted: 11/13/2005 6:15:37 PM | Guitarman, alas, I am an aspiring guitarist. My goal is to join a band or start one. So, I am trying to get a headstart by learning all I can. I am working so that I can afford the gear. I had to sell my strat a while ago so I am now open to any gear recommendations. I play an acoustic right now but I'll eventually buy an electric, an amp and some pedals.
My tastes are mostly various genres of rock (I hate the use of genres) but for simplification purposes of descriptions, I will provide them. I like various metal (the basic bare bones kind, not much of the "nu-metal"), indie rock, post-rock (especially!!!) and some prog rock. My favourite is post-rock and instrumental. I think the other instrumental is also worth a look, so I will listen to more of Vai, Satriani (probably, my first choice), Clapton (already familiar with) and others. I really don't have a favourite of those (yet?). I have most recently listened to a lot of Vai but I am not as impressed as I thought I would be. Perhaps, that's because I know he's done work with Whitesnake? I DO NOT like any hair metal bands or very many mainstream bands from the 80s. Right now, I especially like indie rock and modified strats, telecasters, jaguars/jazzmasters and Gibson copies are mostly used by such musicians if I'm not mistaken.
So far, I like Jazzmasters, Jaguars, Telecasters and for the Gibson style, I like SGs, Les Pauls and the hollow-body varieties (Ibanez, Epiphone etc. also have their versions).
I also like classical, jazz, blues, surf and a lot of other types of music or influences so I think I'm very open to a lot of various guitars and makes.
As for amps and pedals, I'm not as familiar with these but I know the tube amps are the way to go for when you really get into it. I believe the delay and distortion pedals are the ones to look at for my taste(s) in music. Boss is one of the top ones.

| THE GUITAR PLAYER'S THREAD Posted: 11/13/2005 6:23:57 PM | | Idoc, I think Peavy and Crate have very good used amps. Check the local pawn shop and the classifieds. If you just want a practice amp, those are good brands but also check out Vox. It's not a real tube but that company has some decent practice amps although not everyone likes them. I think you have to buy used if you want a Fender tube because they're very expensive and not known for the best tube sounds. So, I suggest Marshalls, Peavys, Traynors and Crates and try to buy used because you can get the best value for the buck. You just have to make sure it's in decent condition. You want to know why they're selling if it's a private sale. | |

that was a great post !!!!!!
we are getting some good questions here.
I will explain an important gear philosophy that in the long run will save you some $$$$ but in the short term you will have to consider as a bit of an investment
ALWAYS BUY GOOD GEAR THAT YOU CAN GROW INTO meaning if you are just learning to play.........don't just buy the 20 watt solid state practice amp because it is easy on the pocket book because as soon as you are jamming with a band it will not cut the mustard and you will have to buy something bigger...........meaning you end up spending more money because you now have to buy a second amp or sell the first one and lose money example: $300 new crate amp or a used Marshall 100 watt tube head for $600 the Marshall was more expensive .............. but, if you bought it instead of the smaller amp you would be done....... i.e. the Marshall will be an amazing practice amp AND you could play shows with it no more amps to buy
my advice is to buy tube heads not combos why? you ask............................maximum flexibility 1) a head weighs less than a combo 2) you can plug your head into a 1X12 speaker cabinet Or a 2x12 cabinet or a 4x12 cabinet depending on the size of the room you play in
example: you buy a head......... at home you have a 1x12 to play through you just bring the head with you to the practice space (leave the 1x12 at home) plug the head into a 4x12 cabinet at the rehearsal space it is almost like having 2 amps
read my earlier posts about good tube head recommendations when trying heads.................bring your main guitar to the store to test it TRY EVERYTHING...............including stuff 'that you can't afford' it will give you an idea of what a great amp sounds like............ then just work down in price to an amp you can afford and one that still has the features of the higher priced amps example: plug into a : Soldano,Bogner, vht, mesa boogie,matchless,badcat,koch,z,($2000+amp) may you can't afford that amp but, you now have a frame a reference of what a truly great head sounds like. You can use that new found info when figuring out which one to buy in your price range. but beware 'your price range' might go up a bit because you see features you must now have.
this is ok though, because I guarantee.......you will be happier with you amp purchase in the long run.

| THE GUITAR PLAYER'S THREAD Posted: 11/14/2005 4:49:31 PM | | My question is this.almost all amp manufacturers today add tons of features to make an amp as vesatile as possible so u can dial up any sound u want from the amp alone.then they add 2 channels.then eq etc...i like to set a amp for one good clear sound then use my pedals etc.. to add color to my sounds and click them off when i feel the need.example tube screamer for beef .boss distortion for dis chorus c2 for chorus etc... my marshall has tons of gain[distortion] and eq to me is useless cause i use my tone controls on my guitar for that.what's the answer? i want one amp one channel and use my pedals for adding color ie moods. example i made need to use a lil chorus in the start of a song the turn it off and use the tube screamer and distortion plus compression sustain for the lead brake.then end with just the chorus.i do not wanna play with my amp settings once i am into a song live onstage and i will not rely on my sound guy to dial up my tones.as anything can happen while u are jammin live and the mood sets the feel for the song as well as audience response.any suggestions? | |

| THE GUITAR PLAYER'S THREAD Posted: 11/14/2005 6:32:09 PM | anyone know why the Charvel San Dimas guitar is so valued or high priced?
I have a model 4 from the 90s worth around 300 to 600.. and i think my guitar kicks ass over the San Dimas in looks anyway..
maybe the San Dimas is all american made? i think mine is a jap made one.. but i wouldent trade it.

| The guitar player's thread Posted: 11/15/2005 1:36:20 AM | Guitarist here, right now I own a nice Fender 1965 Mustang that I baby! I'm playing through a Peavey Bandit 112 at the moment, it's not the greatest amp but it's better than nothing.
But favorite brands would have to be Gibson and Marshall.

| The guitar player's thread Posted: 11/15/2005 11:42:20 AM | Hi Guitartman & ALL I've been reading some of the forum stuff here and i find it awesome to be able to share info... so heres my story.. Im a country player lead guit. & bass my gear: I have a custom made "tele thine line copy" from this guy in Sudbury Ont. Canada. his name is RENE ROY his work is unbaleivable it is not a real hollow boddy thinline it just looks like it it is a full body... it has 3 single pickups and a 5 way switch to give me a "strat" sound when i need to... bird eyes maple neck wint 2 graphite rod on both side of the trust rod... the neck dont move (hardly)... instead of dots i have my name initial M and on the 12've fret its ML (Marcel Larochelle) ..lol it plays real nice and sound awesome with the right amp... I can send pics to those thats curious ..lol :O) i had all kinds of amps from fender / garnet/ peavey/ yamaha/ kustom / roland / hehehe and on & on... as it stand right now I'm still looking for that one sound... I am a Fender Twin nut but the old type w/ the blk face.. i had the perfect one untill the hotel burnt down and i lost it.. :O( that put alot of sadness in my life ...haha lmaoo :O) so i need help on that...needles to say i still dont have a guit. amp yet.For eff i just used a digitech "RP80". it does the trick and its clean sounding... for now... :O) for bass... I have a 69 totaly ORIGINAL mint fender jazz bass red & blk sunburst finish w/ a redish turtleshell pic guard, and it has square perle inlays instead of dots on the neck i still have the manual for it ..lol and im using s SWR 112 bass amp .. not a lound amp but soooooo in your face..lol and full sounding...for its size, i love it and it is not to to bad for my ROY baby lol... I live in Vancouver BC Canada just moved here in july /05 and I'd love to joined a band here... again i have pics...of most my gear.
I'm so gladd that I found this site/forum..... here some links to look up:

thank you for the kind words............. I would love to see the RENE ROY tele please email me a pic if you can
I am a custom builder for pro dudes too and I like to see what guys like me are doing your jazz bass is worth a lot of $$$$$.......... lucky guy
that is a sad story about the twin amp
there are lots of boutique amp companies out now that make some great amps that would fit the bill........that type of sound is very elusive and personal my suggestion is to try as many as you can til you find it

| The guitar player's thread Posted: 11/16/2005 6:08:34 AM | stevens
I am the same I mostly would use channel 2 of my gt trio pre-amp plugged into a mesa boogie 2:90 power amp
my tone would be dry/clean at full volume and clean up nicely by rolling back the volume on the guitar -I would have 3 different overdrive /distortion/boost pedals on the floor
a ts-9dx turbo tube screamer carl martin hot drive and boost one other distortion pedal depending on my mood
I would usally use only one but, sometimes I would use 2 together
JIMI77
the american Charvels SAN DIMAS are a bit of a mystery to me too they are probably worth a lot because the woods used are very high quality and many of the 80's guitar heros used them and Wayne Charvel is know as a great luthier and in many ways was the originator of the 'super strat' so the American ones are coming right from the source of that
the same thing can be found with the original Gibson factory in Kalamazoo or the original PRS factory some of it is legitimate, some of it is hype created by collectors and sellers/stores
you decide | |
