| The guitar player's thread Posted: 12/6/2005 11:53:10 PM | A few things:
It's a Solid State amp, will never sound like a tube amp. It isn't a bad amp for what it is though, as long as you never have to have it repaired. There is a "gain" channel - avoid it, ...buzzy and weak sounding, use the "clean" channel. I had to use one on a gig once where the gear was supplied, I hated it, but I'm probably the fussiest amp guy on here.
$200?

| The guitar player's thread Posted: 12/7/2005 3:23:17 AM | Hey bro' ...sorry, my Yahoo's busted...
Here's another clip. Some Background:
About six years ago, I found a guy who was scratch-building amps in Montreal. I used to hangout in an amp group on usenet. Anyway, I got him to do some mods on my Ampegs, and I ended up trying one of his "homebrews" .... it was very cool. So started a long friendship and I had a killer amp tech in the bargain.
About five years ago while I was at his place in Montreal picking up one of my 'pegs, he showed me the latest in a series of R & D amps that we had co-designed. The Flint L'il Punch (Combo). Here's the specs on this one (MK IV I think).
1.3 watts Single-ended true Class "A" 1 X 12 AX7, 1 X EL 84 Vol. Treble, Bass I X 10" Jensen C10Q Speaker
I tried it out, killer tone, plenty of level, perfect for recording. After I had put away a bottle of wine, he suggest that I record a demo for his web site, so.... I wrote a tune and we recorded it with 2 X Shure SM-84 condensor mics straight into his PC. I used my fretless bass and his Roland V Drums and recorded a 36 second tune that I also used as a bit of a joke on someone (not a serious tune) I used my '58 strat, ....about 4 guitar tracks.
It took about an hour to write/arrange/record/mix, most of the drums are buried as he wanted to highlight the amp. He wanted a "heavy" type tune, and this also played into the little joke I was playing. 1.3 watts ....and yes, I've actually gigged with it in small clubs.

| The guitar player's thread Posted: 12/8/2005 2:33:30 AM | okay, i got about $700 to spend, and i want a third guitar... I'd kind of like one thats mid-weight, with some balls to it, lots of crunch and doesnt look like something picaso made (aka: Bc Rich).... Im 100% against Les Paul and Fender Strats (altho - im yet to see a Les Paul for that cheap that didnt look like it was used as a pogo stick)
any suggestions?......

1 acoustic model 126 amp 100 watt
Probably a bass amp, this is a model from +/- '79, Solid State, probably between 100w and 200w.
|
| The guitar player's thread Posted: 12/8/2005 1:37:07 PM | | the amp is from a friend of my sisterss,,he was a bass player for about 25 years.its 100watts.to damn big to get into my car..i need a small practice amp and was looking at roland micro cubes..any advice...any thing under $200.00. | |
|
| The guitar player's thread Posted: 12/8/2005 1:55:08 PM | | for guitar amps, if you want sometin that sounds decent, but dont plan on playing halls or anything with it.. i'd suggest a Fender Bullet miniamp.. ... for bass amps, i have a Yorkville that kicks ass.. but its mid-sized and probably about $300 or so | |

any advice...any thing under $200.00.
For under $200, you won't get much .... unless you really know what you're doing and can snag a deal on eBay.
ie: My 1965 Gibson GA15-RVT, I picked up for $175 CDN, ...it's worth about $600.
Sell the 126 for $200, add it to your budget and you could probably pick up a decent "small" tube amp that will NEVER depreciate in value. Both Fender and Peavey make entry-level tube combo's that you could probably find in this price range.
As far as Solid State bargains are concerned, the Peavey Bandit can usually be found dirt cheap, maybe even less than $200 used, great bang for buck.

my advice for a good rock guitar
any type of 'super strat' with a humbucker in the bridge IE
Ibanez rg(I own many......6 string , 7 string,steve vai gem....etc)
schecter c1, c1+, c1 classic
check out on the internet all the various versions of these models seriously these are the best in that price range

|
| The guitar player's thread Posted: 12/8/2005 3:32:21 PM | i got a buddy here who owns a guitar shop, so I'll go pay him a visit or something, I'm was thinking about getting another 7 string but probably wont.. schecter, maybe.... I had a Gibson MelodyMaker at one point and that was a neat guitar... but i 100% regret getting rid of my 76 Gibson Explorer =(
Maybe i'll venture into the land of Schecters...
another question for you..... in my other guitar, when i hit the pickup switch to the neck position, i get a faint/weak sound, only the bridge produces a full sound.. now, is it the pods, the pickup switch itself, or *cries* the pickup itself?... or is it one of those, you'd need to pull it apart to look at it kind of deals?
I'd love to get some more signature series guitars as i find they play the best, but, dropping $1000-$4000 on a guitar just isnt happening =)

| The guitar player's thread Posted: 12/8/2005 4:04:35 PM | | @late me thinks you are a tube man...crate has two tube models..a 5 watt for about$180 and a 10 watt for about $325...any thoughts... | |
|
| The guitar player's thread Posted: 12/8/2005 4:13:52 PM | | hey g-man...i too build custom...golf clubs.easier to build, one head, one shaft, one grip..most golfers are wantabe rockstars...if you could build a guitar that looked liked like a golf club you would be golden!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! | |
|
| The guitar player's thread Posted: 12/8/2005 4:20:45 PM | crate
Bad builds, layered PC boards plagued with cold solder joint probs - must be re-wave soldered. Use of low-voltage ribbon cable and Molex connectors in high voltage circuits = bad
Maintenence nightmare, SLM also makes (non-vintage)"Ampeg", ....I call 'em Cratepegs, they aren't as bad.
Most entry level tube amps use these bad build practices, Crate has the worst rep with amp techs though, followed by the Marshall DSL/TSL. I call these amps "disposable" cause after a few years the bad design shows and is very expensive to repair.
