sounds like a coil is shorted on you neck pickup
eliminate stuff front the signal chain
IE just clean guitar if it still does it .........that is probably it
|
| The guitar player's thread Posted: 12/8/2005 8:42:02 PM | sadly, im 99% sure its the coil..... maybe i'll go score another pickup and a new guitar.. hah..
i just cleaned it all up the other day.. oh well.. stupid EMGs... I think i may just throw duncans in it as i thought of earlier

Yuck, ...epoxy potted, can't even rewind 'em.
Try it soldered straight to the jack (or a cable with a 1/4 inch plug) first to be sure, could be a bad solder joint, could be a pot, could be a dirty switch, if that's the case, use some "good" contact cleaner. "CAIG" makes the best stuff on the planet.
Also, buy a cheap multimeter, learn how to use it ..... great for taking care of gear.
|
| The guitar player's thread Posted: 12/8/2005 10:07:13 PM | | i know its not the solder...thats all on tight unless someone was jacking around with it... i thought maybe it was the pot because its somewhat stiffer to move around but if i hit the body under the pickup - it kicks back on somewhat... so im thinking its something with the EMG itself... | |

.thats all on tight unless someone was jacking around with it...
A solder joint can look perfect and still be a "cold-joint", this means it won't pass current well, and yes, a good solder joint can go "cold"..
You can't know this just by eyeballin' it.
Pots fail, switches fail, ........solder, pots and switches are a lot cheaper than PUPs.

| The guitar player's thread Posted: 12/8/2005 10:23:43 PM | i got a friend who owns a guitar shop locally and he owes me about $800.
If that guitar wasnt so expensive I'd throw it out my front door =)....
I've never had a solder joint go "cold" EVER... figures it happens now.... oh well.. much gracias on the help... I guess I'll have to call my buddy up and tell him to take a look at it
i've tried playing with the switch while the casing was open (on the back of the guitar) and it did nothing diferent, *shruG*

figures it happens now....
Maybe
All I'm saying is that there is a logical way to trouble-shoot.
Eliminate the possible, especially if it's a cheap fix (you can do it yourself).
Just replacing the pick-up is a trouble-shooting method called "shot-gunning".
It is usually the most expensive method.

-buy a cheap multimeter (digital) $40
-unsolder the 2 leads from the neck pickup -set multimeter for ohms (which setting Late.......1000k?)
-touch multmeter leads to the 2 pickup leads
-record the number(this is the ohms resistance of the pickup)
-compare it to the website specs for ohms
-if they are really different than you it is pooched
OR
for $20 most techs would do the test /estimate for you
|
| The guitar player's thread Posted: 12/9/2005 2:55:14 AM | On the cheap?
Unsolder the leads (write down which goes where)
Unscrew the jacket on a 1/3 cable.
Solder the leads to the wires on the cable
Plug n' play.....
(which setting Late.......1000k?)
20k for passive | |

| The guitar player's thread Posted: 12/9/2005 3:52:37 PM | I'm gettin it looked at on monday... for free... and fixed.. for free =)
cheaper than buying things i'll use once.. lol oh well.. worst case I'll get a Duncan dropped in it
stupid active pickups.. now i know why I never had EMGs before ,=)
|

stupid active pickups..
I'm not a fan of these either, though I did have a set of Bartolini "Hi A" mini-humbuckers back in the late '70s that were well balanced, ....more for jazz though.
You may want to consider a set of Bill Lawrence* pups, best bang for buck and all hand built.
*not the ones in the Stew-Mac catalog, those are frauds.....
billlawrence.com
You can even call him on the phone and tell him the sound you're after....not bad for $50 a pup for 'buckers.
|
| The guitar player's thread Posted: 12/10/2005 8:48:03 PM | | I'll give it a thought, I'm going to get the thing looked at monday or tuesday and then decide from there how I'm going to deal with it | |
|
| The guitar player's thread Posted: 12/10/2005 11:44:42 PM | yes the bill lawerence xl-500 would be excellent for you Manowar
that is what dimebag darrell was using same with Nuno Bettencourt
they are very articulate sounding I have installed them for clients and would recommend them highly

| The guitar player's thread Posted: 12/11/2005 11:19:45 AM | thks guy's the bill lawrence site is excellent pickupology page/gr8 information. although when i was a fulltime musician i left it up to someone else to care for my equipment. this thread has been very insightfull for me. times have changed. so many gr8 players have relied on fender strat's and tele's cause of durability.I purchased my strat with the lace pickups single coil.i hate noise and grounding problems etc.... dirty pots and on and on. u tech guy's are awesome and much gracias my brother's. i was very fourtunate when i had my band as my bass player was our everything guy. i just needed to showup and make sure my axe's where tuned. i also used tech,s no longer around or have moved or one's who will only work on special day's of the week.like making a doctor's appointment. | |

He will "wind to order" too, ...the guy is a font of knowlege, and almost everybody in the pickup biz has learned stuff from him.
although when i was a fulltime musician i left it up to someone else to care for my equipment.
I took apart my first guitar and re-built it by the time I was 8, by the time I was 10, diggin' around in a tube amp, I learned that an electrolytic capacitor when shorted, could burn a hole in a screwdriver..... "HOW?WHY? .......WHAT? ....makes it work????"
I've done my own mods/repairs since I was a kid. Curiosity didn't kill this cat ......made him fix his own stuff.
I purchased my strat with the lace pickups single coil.i hate noise and grounding problems etc.... dirty pots and on and on.
Funny, ...I know of so many guys that hate Lace pups, ....mostly 'cause someone told them to. I use a set of "golds" in one of my strats, ... quiet, n' plenty o' quack.

| The guitar player's thread Posted: 12/12/2005 3:24:57 PM | I've been collecting guitars for 25 years. I've been in bands that have made a firtune & some that have lost considerably more.
The best gear I have is fender customs that I've had done. I have a tele signed by Keith Richards. Those are for my personal time though. For gigging now I use Jacksons, primarily because they are workhorses. You can get an unbelievable range of sounds from them from a single coil clen sound to the 2 handed distorted gymnastics.
Amps - I have been fortunate to live near where they build the boogies. But I use Hughes & Kettler. I defy anyone to come up with a better amp.
Pedals I still use my old MXR distortion pedal as I like to add the distortio 1st then augment the sound afterwards. I use a Ratt, plus an equaliser too on the same board. That goes through a boss set up that adds the frequency modulations and then to an additional octaver/harmoniser set up. In effect with these I can emulate 4 guitars with a single string.
The final step is the reverb & distortion. To be honest they all do the same.
|
| The guitar player's thread Posted: 12/14/2005 4:41:50 PM | I just posted a picture of a custom reverse tele I built for a client
check it out on my profile while it is there
