| THE GUITAR PLAYER'S THREAD Posted: 1/3/2005 7:23:30 PM | OK folks so like I take it this is the place for people who play guitar.... So my daughter wants a guitar, she is 14 and I am thinking not such a bad idea for her to put her energy into something like this... RECOMMENDATIONS please.... not sure what brand, what all do I have to buy....
I bought a Victory Bass back in 1994, ended up giving it to my best friend, cause I couldnt play it, and didnt have the time to learn.....So I totally threw away $378.00 on that....
Now she is serious, about wanting to learn, and if she is I want to get her the proper equipment...How much am I looking at spending here?????
|
| THE GUITAR PLAYER'S THREAD Posted: 1/3/2005 8:33:37 PM | @ 2kewt
many of the guitar center stores have great biginner packs I would start there
also figure out acoustic or electric
|
| THE GUITAR PLAYER'S THREAD Posted: 1/3/2005 9:33:21 PM | | Also check out www.musiciansfriend.com,,,,I think an Epiphone Les Paul jr. package is right around $200--includes amp & accessories,,,sure it's a cheapy but if the kid doesn't pursue it, then no huge loss. I've played around a little with an Epiphone LP jr. and it seemed ok to me-I mean, the guitar itself is only about $100, so it's pretty basic. Bought my daughter a 3/4 size Yamaha acoustic for $110--has a surprisingly sweet tone. | |

| THE GUITAR PLAYER'S THREAD Posted: 1/5/2005 11:26:40 AM | Well I've been a heavy metal guitar player for about 9 years or so. I myself LOVE music gear man, just wish there was a better music store in my town, but most of my gear has come from ebay.
Guitar: Washburn Dimebag 3ST American made. Pickups: Emg 81, Duncan 59 Bridge: Schaller floyd rose Tuners: Grover 18:1 I love this guitar, ebony fretboard and all. And I highly suggest the Buzz Feiten tuning system you will not be disappointed!

Poweramp: Marshall EL34 100/100 Dual Mono Bloc My favorite amp to date, 12 tubes of glowing goodness.
Speaker Cabs: Peavey 4x12 with sorta good peavey speakers Hiwatt 4x12 with fane speakers

| THE GUITAR PLAYER'S THREAD Posted: 1/6/2005 5:35:20 PM | | Thanks jimi77, I have tried so many different combinations of gear and read way too many articles on gear and who uses what and so on trying to find a tone and distortion that i liked...but I must say i am really happy with my setup as costly as it was to achieve. | |
|
| THE GUITAR PLAYER'S THREAD Posted: 1/6/2005 5:40:46 PM | I play bass, theres a picture of me from haloween in my profile.
I have a Yamaha BB405 5 string with humbucker pickuos and a wine red finish. My amp is a Peavey TNT 115 160 watt monster with an equalizer and fx loop.
Wahooo! | |
|
| THE GUITAR PLAYER'S THREAD Posted: 1/6/2005 6:32:54 PM | Cerberust cool stuff..welcome.
warvamp3 sometimes you have got to pay the price for a good sound. guitarman has been giving me some tips on good gear to get.. he has not been wronge yet. costing me a few coins.. but l love the sound. still some of the simple things i still love to use. i got an old digitec rp 2000.. and i love to use that thing.. and when i go to peoples houses i take that because it has so much on it. everyone loves it that hears it.. but the real deal is a dont feel like lugging 3 or 4 pedels and all the stuff that goes with them..for a few hours of play.
|
| THE GUITAR PLAYER'S THREAD Posted: 1/7/2005 9:37:11 PM | I don't want to go off topic here, but I was just curious as to what songs everyone is currently working on?
I went on a christmas kick a while back personally, and I learned a whole bunch of fingerstyle x-mas songs, which my family really enjoyed....Knucklebenders though..lol
Since I'm off work for a little while with time my hands and still on an accoustic kick, I learned a real cool fingerstyle version of "In the Mood" by Glen Miller, brushed up on Fleetwood Mac's "Never Going Back Again", and currently working on a solo accoustic version of Led Zeppelin's "Going to California"..
Anyways, have to keep busy with time off...Thank god for hobbies like this!
Just curious about other guitar players current noodling projects.
|
| THE GUITAR PLAYER'S THREAD Posted: 1/7/2005 10:58:02 PM | been working on one song by trans siberian O.. i dont know the name of it becasue my lil bro burned me the CD but did not put names on it.. but is goes like this.. de de de de da da da de de de de de. LOL.

@ 2kewt 2bgood. buy something decent. you can get a decent guitar pretty chep now days.. but if you buy a junk one she might become frustrated & lose intrest

'69 Ampeg V4 (chopped VT-22) '72 Ampeg V4 (chopped VT-22) '78 Ampeg V4 70's Ampeg V4 4 X 12 cab, eminence (alpha) loaded 70's Ampeg "style" 2 X 12 cab, sealed w/ Altec 417H X 2 70's Ampeg SVT cab (chopped 4 X 10") 70's Ampeg V4b "style" cab (single EVM15 SRO, bass reflex) '67 Fender Vibrolux Reverb (w/Weber Cali's) '68 Fender Delux Reverb (w/Jensen C12K) 60's Gibson GA-15 RVT (my main recording amp) w/Weber C10Q 60's Kalamazoo Reverb 12 Several "Flint Amplification" prototypes (all low power Class "A" combos) Various 1 X 10" and 1 X 12" cabs.......
All tube, all the time.... I've had at least one ampeg V4/VT-22 around since the mid 70's. I fix all my own stuff guitars and amps and help in designing prototype amps. I leave the digital stuff for those with the patience for it.
I do NOT like "bee-buzz" high gain amps or anything with ribbon cable or molex connectors in it.
Pedalboard (when needed)
TU-12, Boss Blues Driver, Boss Overdrive, Ibanez Bi-mode Chorus, Boss Analog Delay, Ernie Ball Stereo/Pan V. pedal.
Other:
VOX wah Roland GR-30 (with Roland expression and stereo V. pedals) Roland JV-35 Hammond M-111 (my baby B3) Dean type "A" mandolin (w piezo bridge)

| THE GUITAR PLAYER'S THREAD Posted: 1/9/2005 7:40:32 PM | | I’ve got a Gibson Les Paul Custom electric, and a Martin D35 acoustic. But the one I play most, the one that’s on my lap as I type, is a $100 Samick classical. A fraction of the cost of the others, but d*mn it’s fun to play. | |

Is that your studio in the pics?
Nope, it's part of Renegade Music, where I work as a studio musician/arranger/asst.producer. My own home studio is far more modest -
http://homepage.mac.com/ewald/.Pictures/office.jpg
Most of what makes mine usable is the snake to the basement, that's where the cabs and mics are, the heads are in the control room with me. Unfortunately I have to borrow mics and pre's to make anything sound half decent.
The Studio-On-The-Lake has 100% discreet analog front end, about $175K worth, 90% hand made (lot's of custum built mics too), the mixing desk alone was built for $45K, the guy did it for us @ cost ..not the kind of stuff you can buy in stores. You can push so much bandwidth through the front end you don't have(want) to EQ a thing, no reverb, no comp ........ so much signal you barely have to tweak anything at mastering. Once you hear it, you swear off digital (front end) gear for life!
Heh heh, ......you EQ a track at this place by moving the mics........
|
| THE GUITAR PLAYER'S THREAD Posted: 1/10/2005 6:59:16 AM | Another tip:
Microphone diaphrams are verrrrry sensitive, ...... if you're going for a "huge" "crunch" tone, you'll get a bigger sound if you use a dimed 10 watt amp like Gibson and the Tweed Deluxe in that picture, than you would with a full or half stack 50 or 100 watter. It's simple, too much SPL bends and warps the mic diaphram, since a 10 watt amp can achieve output saturation at far lower SPL, you can get more signal IN without overpowering the mic.
Most people don't realize that 50 watts is only 3db lower than 100, to bring things down to "percieved" half power from a 100 watt amp, you gotta' go down to 10 watts.
The prototype amps I'm working on now are between 1 and 3 watts, still loud enough to disturb apartment neighbours when dimed, 100db @ 1m "A" weighted.
You can't reproduce this sound with gain stages or master volumes, it just not the same as what happens between the tube finals and the output transformer under clipping, ahhhhhh the sweet spot!
For example, we recorded the guitars on this amp demo track using only a 1.3 watt amp (Flint "L'il Punch" prototype I), 2 X 12" Altec 417H loaded cab, two SM82 mics straight into a PC sound card, no EQ, no Comp, no Verb, NO FX, period, ........same set-up for my fretless except I drove the cab with a V4, I played the drums on my amp tech's Roland V-Drums.
http://homepage.mac.com/ewald/.Music/Escape_from_Planet_Jarl.mp3
.........yeah, it's kinda' supposed to be a lame tune, it was done as a usenet prank, but it illustrates what you can do with a 1.3 watt tube amp. 4 years later, The "L'il Punch" is now at prototype VI stage, if we ever get enough $ together, we'll be doing a run of 25 hand wired amps.
Look ma! no pedals!!!!!!
Here's the other cheesy demo we did that afternoon, I added a little "Hammond organ" part with a GR-30.

that is awesome a studio dude...........did rush record there in the early 80's?
|
| THE GUITAR PLAYER'S THREAD Posted: 1/10/2005 12:43:10 PM | Nawwww that wasn't recorded in a studio, it was recorded in a kitchen in Montreal at the house of the guy that builds the amps, ......gotta' picture somewhere,
http://homepage.mac.com/ewald/.Pictures/July-2001.jpg
I was kinda' drunk, not my best work......... especially trying to write tunes that would come in under 35 seconds, LOL!
