Perhaps I should elaborate a little. I put my hands up to stop a screen door that was coming back faster and harder than I expected ( I was following someone else outside).Long story short, the glass shattered and one piece lodged in my wrist. So deep it completely severed 3 tendons and went 90% of the way thru the median nerve.Result, a permanently numb left hand and a significant reduction in dexterity of the fingers. So much so, that after 22years of playing, I can't even hit the open chords with any consistency.Been trying for the last 4 years to get it back...but it's gone.
And about the "gift",I probably should have clarified a little more. I know as well as anyone here, playing an instrument requires a huge mental, physical, and emotional investment. It's not a hobby, it's an obsession.But...just knowing the chords is not enough. Anyone can be taught to play the chords, But not everyone can make the chords into music...and that,my friend is THE gift.
And always thought I'd die if I couldn't play,but...I got an eight year old boy who needs me, so I'm here for the long haul.
After playing for all that time..I kind of took it for granted that I would always be able to.All it took was 2 seconds to wash away 20+ years of work.

Sorry to hear it, bro', I've had some close calls with hands and fingers, some breaks, big gashes and some fingertips sewed back together, but nothing that I couldn't recover from. One of the players I work with plays left-handed as he lost the two middle fingers of his left hand with limited use of the re-attached index finger from an escalator accident.

Have you tried playing slide or lapsteel?

Making the chords into music is the hardest work of all, once the work is done, it SEEMS like it comes naturally..... but for me it came from experience and listening.

Thanks for the encouragement.I actually have been messing around with slide...I love the sound of well played slide guitar. Not to interested in lap steel though, nothing can replace the rush of a guitar slung around the neck, ya know? I'm hoping to have enough saved to have another surgery done on my hand this summer. At this point it's elective surgery so insurance won't cover it.If not the next step will be learning to play left handed. Kind of a daunting task that one...but...everything happens for a reason. I'm not bitter anymore, was for a long time. Life is still worth living, I have the recorded memories,of what I once could do.My love of music still remains, always will.

Very Sweet Guitar! Thanx for the pics bro. I really like the "depth" of the finish,,excellent workmanship Maestro. So,,,,waiting for pics of other guitars you've customized/built..come to think of it, I still need to send you a close-up of my Gibson. The feedback advice helped a lot and I've worked out a few presets on my amp that "almost" eliminate the high pitch whine. Thanks again and let us know when your website is going.

um im gonna have to read all your posts tommorrow as theres so many but for i think this guitar hobby can be expensive, i mean i would to have a gibson les paul guitar, but the cost soo much, i can afford one but dont wanna burn a big hole in my pocket to get one, anyways as it stands i only got,

cheap fender amp,
cry baby wah wah
mexican fender strat
yamaha fx310 acoustic
honer classic guitar
.............................
as for playing stuff i never had guitar lessons i just play from total guitar mags and i also use the guitar pro 4 program and the guitar pro tabs, i have over 37000 guitar pro tabs so im never short on materail to learn, however i find myself being tab reliant on playing stuff, i can only play some stuff from memory, simple chord strumming songs are easy to remember but playing solos and and what not i need to have the sheet of tab in front of me.

hey dudes
it is me again
so here is a cool trick
one of my young customers was at my shop
with his little solidstate marshall amp like 20 watts

I showed him a trick I will share
the combo only had like an 8 " speaker in it and was not able to produce the bass he was after

we plugged the speaker out into a a closed back cabinet
sounded huge cause the speaker could handle the watts
simple trick ................give it a try

Try it with a dimed 8 watt Champ into an infinite baffle 4 X 12 cab, I have a hand wired (true P to P), 3 watt, true Class "A", single ended amp that just rips when it's dimed through a big cab.

BUT.............

FYI, one of the leading causes of "blown" speakers is underpowered SS amps, when a SS amp clips, it can "go D.C.", this can fry the voice coils in speakers designed for higher wattage loads due to voice coil "hang time". Some higher power speakers, especially non-ALniCO ones, won't even wake-up unless you hit 'em hard.

The sweetest sounding speakers around, usually max out at 15 to 25 watts see: Tone Tubby's, Weber Blue Dogs and Celestion Bulldogs.

If you really want to play in the "sweet spot"?

1 to 10 watt tube amp(dimed) - 15 watt premium ALniCO speaker - use guitar's controls and fingers to go from clean to dirty. ONLY the finals (output tubes and tranny) will "do" this when clipped, no pedal or pre-amp can even come close as this "sweet" sound is as a result of saturation and loading between the output tubes and output transformer. "Overdriving" the finals will produce a distorted sound, ......yes, but it will not be as articulate or interactive(touch control). One advantage to preamp distortion is it tends to hide bad technique, ......one reason why it's popular.

The biggest advantage to the low power (tube) approach is that, you generate lower SPL's, this means you get MORE signal (and headroom) from the mic (especially large diaphram types) due to lower mic diaphram warping(high levels "bend" the diaphram).

This is one of the hardest things to explain to "young guys" recording in studios for the first time........... The look on their faces after trying their "stacks" and then trying a '50's 10 watt Fender Tweed Deluxe then listening to the difference on playback???

Priceless.

"Holy Fxck! dood! ....it sounds HUUUUUUGE!!!!!!!"

My main axe at present is a Johnson acoustic/electric bass guitar (plays so good that my Epiphone Rivoli hasn't been out of the case for several months). I play through a Trace Elliot combo amp.

The guitar in my pic is an Ibanez doubleneck that a friend got off of ebay and sold to me.

I have an amp tech friend that calls those things Tranny-Toasters. You gotta' be real careful when you use an attenuator 'cause you are running the amp full throttle, even though the level's down. IMO the attenuator's are a bit of a tone-suck as they are not a "reactive load"...... the more you "cut" the more tone is sucked.

I think they are okay if you only use them once in a while, if I went that route I'd go with a Weber MASS driver, as it's a reactive load.

BTW those old Silvertones kick xss!

Yeah, a few years ago, I have it on tape somewhere, I can't watch it without bawlin' my eyes out. I grew up in Winnipeg in the 60's and 70's, Lenny was a fixture back then, I was lucky to have seen him many times and attend a few of his workshops.

Has anyone heard of Novax Guitars? Charlie Hunter, a jazz guitarist, plays an 8-string Novax, and after I listened to some of his music on Rhapsody (an excellent $10/mo music service that I can't say enough good things about), I did some reading on him and went to the Novax website only to be floored by a totally radical "fanned fretboard" concept.
The 8-string has 3 bass guitar strings and 5 standard guitar strings, and the bass end of the nut is about 1.5" longer than the treble end, and the bridge is actually 8 individual bridges angled opposite from the nut. The site is http://www.novaxguitars.com

Congrats on your upcoming session work, Late.

lateforsupper ....you are showing off............lol

with a compressor if you put a gain pedal in front
like distortion or overdrive

it can really squash your dynamics too much
because it senses the boost created by the overdrive or distortion
as peak level..................always
unless you adjust the threshhold to compensate
also it will amplify alot of noise from the overdrive pedal
first in the chain

PRS, '72 Fender, Guild acoustic, and an old classical. Idon't know who makes 'cause the inside info is gone, but it is one of the sweetest thangs ever. Older guitars were better due to their wood: it was old growth. Nothing 'but new trees now...

Guitarman100, what do you think about the disortion on the "ZOOM Tri Metal TM-01"?
what do think about old and new, heavy and light guitars?

Slightly off topic here...I'm currently working on Zep's "Bron y-Aur Stomp" on accoustic...Just not sure if it's a fingerstyle song, switched to picking, or all fingerstyle throughout?..Or does it matter?...My thumb is hurtin"..lol

How would anybody approach this sucker?
