| The guitar player's thread Posted: 4/14/2006 10:45:00 AM | | i have a 53 ga-90 gibson amp i have acquired...needs some work anyone got any insight | |
|
| The guitar player's thread Posted: 4/14/2006 2:00:16 PM | Rare amp, great for blues harp, worth a few $ in good condition, so radical modifications aren't a good idea.
Save all the parts you replace, if it hasn't been serviced in the last 20 years or so, it WILL need new filter caps (electrolytic), a grounded AC cord, and probably new tubes, (...all of which you should be able to find replacements or subs for).
|
| The guitar player's thread Posted: 4/14/2006 3:00:13 PM | | ya i updated that post but dont know if it went through anyway its in good shape only 150 made that year probably needs new tubes and speakers | |
|
| The guitar player's thread Posted: 4/14/2006 3:53:54 PM | For sure it will need new caps, some tubes may be okay, but it's best to get some new ones and "shot-gun" test the old ones by swapping them in, ....make sure you do the 5881's in pairs. Speakers are probably okay, unless they're rotted out, 25 watts spread over 6 Jensens isn't a big strain. Stay away from the Russian 5881's, they would suck for this amp.
What happens if you power up?
|
| The guitar player's thread Posted: 4/14/2006 7:57:13 PM | | im not sure its been a while since i checked it out gotta dig it out i suppose that would be the first step | |
|
| The guitar player's thread Posted: 4/16/2006 12:05:12 PM | What a strange place to start a guitar player's thread!
Apart from BettB... have there been many women posting to this thread?
I thought this site was all about finding women, not guitar buddies?
I happen to be a guitar player but I visit other sites that are strictly dedicated to guitar-playing. That way I get to chat with 100x more players than I could here. The discussions are much richer and varied.
I'm just trying to understand the rationale behind this thread, on this site? This is not meant to spoil the party or anything.
The POF forums have discussion topics other than dating, this particular forum is to discuss Art/Music, this thread is for discussing "guitar gear", (richer and varied not applicable to the topic), this thread has had many women participants, and many professional guitarist participants, and a few posters who are in the "guitar gear" business, the OP is a luthier and another participant builds/designs/repairs tube amps.
That would be:
"the rationale behind this thread, on this site"
BTW, I strongly suggest you read the link to the forum rules at the top of this forum: Forum Rules - Specific In particular, "Registrations", as having multiple profiles is not allowed, pick one and delete the other(s), failing to do this will result in all being deleted from the site.

What would you like it to do?
I'm in E. Ontario, and I don't "take in" any mod work, but I know a guy in Pickering who does.

| The guitar player's thread Posted: 4/17/2006 7:21:25 PM | | Hello 100 .....I am 1425...... nice to see others with similar interests....... I have a '79 Strat I bought new that year and is my #1...... Brown smoke sunburst....bought a Tele in '89 for a back -up ....same - same .....nice pair..... love the tube amps, have a lil Fender Super Champ and a new Pignose 12" w/60watts - tube for a back-up as well.... I love the small amps because I can turn them up to like 6 or 7 (volume) ...still get a clean rhythm sound and bite your head off when I turn up the guitar(full) to solo..... that's old school ... I use a Digitech GSP-21 rack unit w/foot controller (digital FX) and I also have a pedal board full of analog goodies....FUN.... Guitarman1425 | |

| The guitar player's thread Posted: 4/17/2006 7:32:29 PM | | You really seem to have a technical handle on all the equipment..... did you get started in it as a musician first and then a technician or the other way around ??? | |
|
| The guitar player's thread Posted: 4/17/2006 9:26:08 PM | If you mean me?
I started playing when I was about 5, got my first shock from the inside of a tube amp at 8, I burned a hole through the tip of a screwdriver, thus teaching me what a capacitor was for.
Curious cat, not dead yet. I was lucky to live in Winnipeg in the late '60s to mid '70s, .....Gar Gillies (Garnet Amps), had a shop near the airport, ...When I had questions, he had answers. I've never been in the repair biz, but I can tell in a second, whether a tech knows his shit or not.
The great thing about (older P to P) tube amps is, the failure modes are consistant.
Super Champ, ........killer amp, Rivera design. If I had one of those, I would hang on to it.
|
| The guitar player's thread Posted: 4/17/2006 9:58:46 PM | I started as a guitar player I was always modding and experimenting with guitars
at a certain point I had way too many to afford to have someone else do the work for me so I learnt how to fix guitars
I took a lot of pride in the work I did, I decided to try and be the best guitar tech/builder I could be.........I read everything and bought every dvd and book I could put my hands on.....
then I went full-time bought tons of luthier tools and built a small shop
I still play guitar......but, the challenges of building are new and exciting,It is the natural extension of my playing
ps and................. I make more money as a tech ,than I did as a player

| The guitar player's thread Posted: 4/18/2006 9:18:47 AM | Ok...thats it. Tommorow night I am off to trade in my Line 6 212 spider II, that I bought a couple of months ago...and because I find the info on this thread absolutely invaluable, I must share my veiws on this amp.
Buy one if you want to spend all your gig time trying to dial in your sound. Buy one if you want to beg borrow and buy pedals just to get a tone that is passable. Buy one if you like the tinny sound of an AM radio...although the metal and insane settings are very cool...I play blues and old rock...lol Buy one if you like the sound of a digital reverb and delay decay.... Buy one if you like it when your soundman says..."your amp sounds like kife" Buy one if you like it when your soundman says..."this band has a certain sound, and this ain't it"
Don't buy one if you have ever said something like..."I will never use anything but a tube amp" Don't buy one if you have ever said something like..."I love my Fender Twin" Don't buy one if anyone has ever said to you something like..."Jeez...that twin makes you sound genius"
Yes, with great humiliation I admit, I gave up a twin for this thing...duh...thinking well, its lighter, less maintainence,(my twin kept kakking at gigs) and seems more versatile....live and learn, sometimes the hard way...
...soooo, now what? I play in bars and lounges, and will be recording soon. Also on a budget...We have a moderatley loud stage sound...except sometimes we are required to play very quietly...I need an amp that is versatile, and easy to operate...I am not much of a gear head...I play an Ibanez series S with stock pickups, which I have raised the pickups for more sustain, I use it because its very light, and came with a Floyd rose whammy... and my shoulder doesn't fair well after a night or two with heavier guitars... cant afford to replace it but definatley will asap, and can't afford another twin.

| The guitar player's thread Posted: 4/18/2006 9:51:22 AM | Budget?
Tone preference - - "bee buzz" high gain ? - output tube "warmth"?
Welcome back to the order of the thermionic valve.

dude I am here to help..............
get a loan, many music shops will do financing at like 2-3 % buy used......... life is too short for bad tone
If you have a car you can afford a rig
suggestions on the cheap.................. -peavey tube amps are cool
-used rocktron piranha
-I had an s series ibanez like yours sounded kinda hard and thin to my ears............... rg sounds better strat with a humbucker is nice too schecter makes some nice guitars too
|
| The guitar player's thread Posted: 4/18/2006 2:36:53 PM | Well...no car...lol...
I plan to finance something for sure; I will be able to trade in the line 6 on something. Just need to keep the payments low.... thankyou.
...re tone preference....warm heavy bluesy. I like a fast neck so that playing doesn't seem like a chore. Good delay and sustain on solos kind of thing. We are a 3 peice (sometimes 4 with keys) so big guitar is important...and I like vintage bluesy sounds....I will look at a peavey tube amp as suggested, and see what they have for axes...maybe change out the pickups.
It was suggested to me that a lower watt tube amp might sound better than a high watt one...I know a guy plays a strat thru randall, sounds alright...but he also has lottsa bells and whistles which I hope to avoid.
I hope this is the last time I switch up gear for a long time...the headache of this constant pursuit for the right tone is going to drive me over the edge!

| The guitar player's thread Posted: 4/18/2006 3:02:49 PM |
vintage bluesy sounds
Peavey Delta Blues 115 (tweed is nice)
Around $500 new/$300 used
(*When you want to upgrade it, swap in a 50w "P15N type" "Weber VST alnico 15" speaker)
I've talked a few people into this one, ....absolutely no complaints.
It's like a '50s Fender Tweed Vibrolux, .....on steroids
(Trust me on this one, this is what I'm comparing it to) http://homepage.mac.com/ewald/.Pictures/vibrolux.jpg

| The guitar player's thread Posted: 4/18/2006 5:17:51 PM | blue mystery
late suggestions are really good
on the s series...............
I think the tone is inherit to the design I had u.s. dimarzios in mine and it was ok but I have set some up for clients too and they just don't have as good of tone because of the body design
when you are out there try an upper end strat with a humbucker in the bridge
you are in Calgary I am in edmonton maybe I can help.....

| The guitar player's thread Posted: 4/19/2006 11:29:55 PM | a slight shift in the tone discussion....
I was browsin' the acoustics the other day...picked out 3 in the $900 to $1200 range...Yepiphone masterbuilt, Taylor, and Martin...
...all played very nice...BUT the tone on the Taylor blew the other two away...and that was the mid-priced one...
...all great solid construction...strings didn't look or feel too worn...then I took a closer look...was 90% sure that the Taylor had a Tusq saddle...sure enough...Tusq is standard on Taylors...
....I put Tusq parts on my bottom of the barrel Epiphone acoustic...VERY IMPRESSED...but still I'm looking to upgrage...the old gal (approaching her third year! heheee) needs work...and I think I'd rather invest in a really good quality acoustic....
...I'm thinking I could purchase a $600 - $800 Epi Masterbuilt, fit it with tusq...and walk away with a few hundred bucks left in my pocket....oh but the Taylor is super nice too....
...Any opinions? | |
|
| The guitar player's thread Posted: 4/20/2006 12:02:10 AM | Taylor or Martin
The D bodied Taylor with mahogany sides and back is nice.
Martin D 18 is still my favorite flat-top, .....but it's a '59, I haven't played a new Martin that comes close to the old Martins, ...or the new Taylors.
Which ever I ended up with, I'd probably use a bone saddle, or fossilized ivory, ...picky that way.
|
| The guitar player's thread Posted: 4/20/2006 12:30:40 AM | The D bodied Taylor with mahogany sides and back is nice.....
yes I quite like the full mahogany acoustics by taylor and martin less $$$ and warm tone
paulchino I am not familiar with the masterbuit epis yet so hard for me to say I think the resale on the martin would be better though
ps 2 piece saddles tend to intonate better........they have the proper throw for the string
|
| The guitar player's thread Posted: 4/20/2006 4:47:08 PM | crate...ST...I play classical, and that stuff punches out sound eternal. Malaguena never sounded fatter!!!! | |
