Just want to say hey to fellow players. Ive got a 73' Ibanez 12 string in mint condition,Seagull folk 6string,and a fender strat (mexico). Don't play the strat as much as I should, just love the sound of the acoustic. Found this thread today and glad its here. JJ

| The guitar player's thread Posted: 8/30/2006 12:35:59 AM | Late, G-man...
...any opinions on Traynor amps? Custom Valve class?
...I like the fact they're made in Canada.... ...Don't like to support cheap labor...shoulda realized my Strat was mexican before I brought it home dammit...
|
| The guitar player's thread Posted: 8/30/2006 7:02:53 AM | I've played a couple Traynor amps. I'm more into the heavy ultra distorted tones so they didnt float my boat for that. But the one I tried was a 25/50 watt switchable amp. The cleans were DREAMY. Not to mention the slightly distorted tone, GREAT for blues. I was going to crank the amp and throw a tube screamer infront of it but I was late for work. I tried the amp out with my Ibanez RG270DX with an EMG 81/85 set. If I had more time I would have tried it with a nice strat. If you're into the lighter side of guitar, I say get one, you wont be disappointed! | |
|
| The guitar player's thread Posted: 8/30/2006 8:04:53 PM | | I find that Traynor amps, like fender are great to use with a distortion pedal. Throw a Muff or a boss in front of that baby and stand back. You can blend the tone of the amp distorting and the pedal too to get some wicked fuzz tones. | |
|
| The guitar player's thread Posted: 8/30/2006 9:36:28 PM | ^^^^ right on...I'm definately gonna look for one to try out...I don't really use extreme gain too much...but those were exactly my thoughts...from what I've read...the gain is the most complained about feature of the Traynors...
...well geeez...if it ain't crap...don't throw it away... just add to it...everyone's gotta have at least a couple pedals for an amp like that...
...I wanna compare one to the Fender blues reissue...I've got a feeling you might just be paying too much money for the Fender name...I've even heard Traynors being compared to Mesa's and Hughes & Kettner....so I'm very intrigued.....

also try a peavey classic 30 delta 30 classic 50
all in the same $$$ ballpark
a good gain pedal ......... fulltone ocd tube screamer ts9 dx dod performer 555
|
| The guitar player's thread Posted: 8/30/2006 10:01:14 PM | I concur with Gman on the Peaveys, best bang for buck right now.
Try the joys of output saturation before you get married to the square wave clipping of mismatched stage gain. The former yields warm harmonic distortion, the other cuts the top and bottom off of the waveform [square wave] of the signal. Which to me, is "lite".
You can hit the front end of a "unity gain" style front end cleanly and magnify the output saturation, ...the opposite method of "cascading" gain at the front end, ...drops signal and makes your tone >mooshy< instead of sweet.
However:
The benefit of the squarewave method is that it does hide crappy technique and mistakes.

| The guitar player's thread Posted: 8/30/2006 10:19:59 PM | Late is right !!!!
my suggestion would be a tube head and a seperate 2x12" cabinet if you can swing it.........................if not FINANCE IT dude
buy good shiit once..............not 'affordable' stuff 10 times
if the rig you want is $2000 finance it !!!!! trust me !!! no point ,wanting/needing to buy another amp in 1.5 yrs

G-Man you beat me to the post...20 minutes of browsing the Peavy classic line...and I'm liking what I see....you know I don't wanna skimp on my gear...but I don't ever plan on making shit loads of cash either....I want the best...but don't wanna over-pay....
...I'm pretty sure I already did that for my Mexican strat...$1,100 but she is a beauty with surprisingly good setup staight outa the box...
...I went into amp browsing with 2 choices... either I'll drop around a grand on a good combo... or I'll just go over the top and spring for a Hughes & Kettner head and a VOX 212 cab with the Celestion alnico blue speakers...I'm guessing that rig might be $3-3.5 grand...
H & K makes a surpisingly simple head that caught my eye...
But then I remembered how good my old Peavey practice amp was...
Try the joys of output saturation before you get married to the square wave clipping of mismatched stage gain.
I'll bet Peavey accomplishes this with their pre and post gain knobs...right? Only amps I've seen like that...and I remember getting comments on how good that lil Peavey sounded....
Sooo...all the other amps with the ONE gain knob...are they more prone to putting out mismatched gain?
Now I'm thinking Classic 30 head with the celestion blue speakers? The Peavey is almost as simple as the H & K...less is definately more for me...one of the reasons I went with my strat (besides obvious killer asthetics) only has the ONE tone knob...I got no time to be fiddling with ooodles of knobs when I'm rippin' it up on the axe....
...oh btw, anyone know of other cabs besides the VOX with the celestion blues?
Great advice guys... | |

| The guitar player's thread Posted: 8/31/2006 11:30:51 AM | I just did an internet search for Canada they look pretty cool too
get a 2x12 cabinet that you can remove the back panel or put it back on
2 different sounds
and get a seperate head--more versitile, and you can swap out the head for a different sound
recording is better with a seperate head cause you don't pick up the tube rattles you get with a combo

you spent too much on the mexi strat it has lots of bling on it BUT a mexi strat should never be $1100 ever
Yup...when I bought it I didn't even realize some Fenders were made in Mexico...ooops... From my viewpoint...(lacking the knowledge albiet) the general quality is still there... ...as far as the neck and body goes...it is a heavy strat...so I'm assuming it's a solid piece of alder...the nut looks like bone....
...apart from cheaper labor...do they just skimp on the electronics? pickups? hardware? ...what's you're opinion of the mex? please don't tell me the frets are shit...they seem alright to me...but what the hell do I know?
...with a set of Bill Lawrence pups and a good trem "solution" (YA YA haven't got to that yet) I'm assuming I can turn it into a primo Strat no?
...geeez with all this talk about amps, mods, bass amps...you'd think I'm just gonna put it all on my credit card tomorrow....YA RIGHT

| The guitar player's thread Posted: 8/31/2006 7:22:10 PM | I believe Fender has gone to Mexico for some of their reissues now. Don't be too disappointed, the Mexican guitars are built very well with the same quality woods and the two reviews I've seen where they pitted the Mexi's vs the USA models were very interesting. One was a British magazine where they compared the Mex Telecaster to a USA built 50's reissue butterscotch Tele. The Mex received a 4.5/5 rating and the USA had 5/5 rating....we're talking about a $1500 difference in price and 'half a star' difference in sound-they liked the USA model's sound that little much better. The other magazine all but told you it was foolish to buy the USA Standard Strat when you can get a Mexi for half the price that's just as nicely made and good sounding. My personal experience mirrors that too; I had a late 90's American Strat Ultra with the Lace Sensors. It was a nice playing and sounding guitar, had the LSR nut and a mid range boost..fun guitar and everything, but honest to Gawd,my Mexican made '69 Thinline Tele reissue is a better built instrument than the Strat was.The neck to pocket fit was rough on the Strat, perfect on the Tele.Fret dressing was edgy and there was glue residue on the Strat's neck, not so on the Tele and the fit of the pickguard wasn't flush either on the strat-you could stuff a pick under some spots where the body finish was either uneven or the guard was warped, not the same case on the Tele with the large pearlesque pick guard used on the Thinline. Unless there's something you don't like about the sound you're getting,be happy,it's a good guitar.
BTW,I just picked up a Epiphone G-400 Custom SG...so far,I'm really happy with it too and I wouldn't hesitate to put it up against the two Gibsons SG's I had preceding it..or even my early nineties LP Studio.I believe this Epiphone is Korean built.

Could you help me out? I am debating on getting a 6 string or 7 string electric. The 7 strings are about double the price of a 6 string and I wonder if that one extra string will be worth all that extra cash. Also I notice the prices dropping slightly over the last few years and get a feeling it will keep dropping till they are only a couple hundred more then a six string. Please let me know what you think of the 7 strings and if they are worth it. Thanks for any info you can provide.

| The guitar player's thread Posted: 8/31/2006 10:22:08 PM | I bought a Fender tube amp. It's one of the blackface ones. The sound is excellent. I've read good reviews on it for the most part. It was used but in really good condition. I found a few American-made telecasters and I'll soon buy one of those.
As for the Mexican-made Fenders, if anyone cares for my opinion, I think most are decent but yeah, 1 grand is a bit much for them. Although some of the re-issues are said to be really good guitars. The re-sale value for most of the ones which are MIM will be lower than the American made ones. It depends what you like and you really need to try each guitar to make sure (it's quality and the one you want). That's what I was led to believe anyway.

7 string is cool I have 2 of them it take awhile to learn how to play it I would suggest get a 6 string and learn to play it well then buy a 7 string as a second flavor
on Fenders
my favs buy a used USA fender ..............used is the key!!! this is how you bridge the price difference
look up fender usa on ebay there are a million out there a even better value is a warmoth guitar that is used on ebay if it was put together well
|
| The guitar player's thread Posted: 9/1/2006 6:54:30 AM | Thanks guitarman
That's what I will do. Get a nice 6 string and become comfortable with it before attempting to get the 7 string.

I managed to stumble across one of your posts that mentions the Peavey 6505.... ...any other recommendations? (other than big name / big bucks)
...I'll most likely go with one of them Avatar cabs.... ...I wanna make up for my ill-informed Strat purchase...with a killer amp for cheap...
|
| The guitar player's thread Posted: 9/2/2006 1:01:57 AM | peavey 6505II head is a killer value
about $1200 (120 watts) I took back my delta 30 when I compared the two amps the 6505 did the delta30 thing well plus it did the modded marshall thing too
-ebay used gt trio peramp check that out $400 us
-mesa 2:90 power amp$600 us
traynor yba-1 (recapped or modded-cause they are old(1969 but killer)$300 us
I own those above plus many more, but these above are the goods!!
buy used unseen can be scary ....I have lucked out and would reccomend it
my advice: buy a nice amp once..........no kaa kaa gear
|
| The guitar player's thread Posted: 9/2/2006 10:32:17 AM | Well...I just got some new gear that I absolutely love! Doing recording at home in a cozy apartment I needed something that was compact, so I picked up a really nice mixer, a Behringer UB1002FX that is just the greatest sounding thing! I just got an Ibanez GRS200 bass that I REALLY like too. Although a lot of people don't like AKG c1000s condensers for vocals, I'm getting good results with them through the Behringer into Cubase, and the acoustic guitar sounds (oh yeah...Fender DG31) I'm getting through it are top-notch.
peace,
