| The guitar player's thread Posted: 9/19/2006 1:55:50 PM | tremolo's tremolo's tremolo's....
been lookin into Wilkinson's lately...I've been having second thoughts about hacking my guitar...but when I went searching to see if my string spacing would match a vintage Wilkinson....I stumbled across Callaham bridges....
...small company (I REALLY like that) ....their info on the website seems very honest and knowledgable...and the attention to detail seems second to none (their trem blocks look very inticing) ...I'm gonna look up some reviews....but in the meantime....
...any other thoughts?
...I've also read about some more tweaks to the vintage setup that Late didn't mention earlier...
-lubrication of the saddles, pivot screws, and string tree -raising the 4 inside screws to reduce hangups -raising the string tree so the angle is reduced
...also...measuring from the edge of the trem cavity to the claw (along the center of each claw screw) I noticed my claw isn't set parallel with the edge of the cavity....I'm guessing I should make an adjustment????
|
| The guitar player's thread Posted: 9/19/2006 2:23:22 PM | paulchinoII Callaham bridges I think that would be the extra 20% solution
Floyd rose my friend..............seriously go try some guitars with a properly set up floyd see how it sounds, and it will stay in tune better than a non locking system being in tune is a good thing
This may be hard advice but ...............
people should be less precious about their guitars it is a piece of wood......folks experiment ......if you don't like what you come up with then buy a replacement warmoth body and start again
| |
|
| The guitar player's thread Posted: 9/19/2006 11:56:22 PM | ^^^^^ good point G-man...it is just a piece of wood.... all just ideas floatin' around in my head...I got thinking about the possibility of throwing together a custom strat....a REAL GOOD vintage type strat...and if I shopped in the right places...it could be relatively inexpensive....
...I jammed with this dude a few weeks ago...he brought over his Jackson with a Floyd knock off....but I didn't really do a good comparison between my strat and the Floyd....
...the arm didn't have a set screw and was prone to coming loose.... ...maybe I'll do some browsin' tomorrow.... ...I do like the ability to pull the pitch up on the trem...
....stumbled across the "Tremol-No" too...that looks cool...but for a different application...
|
| The guitar player's thread Posted: 9/20/2006 1:10:10 AM | your buddy did not have his floyd set right
It do a mod with the nut .etc that makes the bar not flop around
even fender trems the bar is kinda loose
ibanez/wilkinson have a good system with a fitted insert makes the bar feel great..not floppy
you want to check out a sure claw
that is the shiiiiit for floating bridges

| The guitar player's thread Posted: 9/21/2006 4:02:50 PM | I've got a nice OLP Musicman copy, and a Tanglewood electroacoustic (currently on loan to a lad in work)
But my real tools are the basses - got a 4-string Rockbass Streamer, a 5-string Encore with active gubbins, and a 6-string Shine also with active gubbins. I just have too much fun playing bass to go back to guitar long enough to be any good at it!

SICK! I'd love to see a close up of that man...when are ya due for your next newsletter?
...I leveled my bridge the other day...did a few more tweaks that were supposed to improve the trem....definately gonna drop a Floyd in now...
...I played a top end Jackson with a floyd the other day too...I think I could live with the "deadness" it's not TOO bad....add the BL bucker and some "hot" single coils...that would be a bad ass metal axe....
...and I'm already lookin' at ash strat bodies on ebay...do that vintage strat up proper...
G.A.S. is a ****.... | |

FOOLS! the specs confirm "high tech" ...f*ck the weight... "one piece body" and the first thing that came to mind when I read "stainless steel" ... probably more durable....
...heheheeeee good enough for Adrian Belew...good enough for me...BTW Belew is the CRAZIEST heavy trem user I've ever heard.....
G-MAN! I scored a SWR workingman's 160 for under $250 CDN (total) on ebay.... Mother's Music was selling one for $350....SOUNDED good through eminence speakers....

| The guitar player's thread Posted: 9/24/2006 2:01:24 PM | okay, SO..
I wanna rip all the paint off a guitar. I also dont want to spend 10 hours sanding the paint off of it. I put lighter fluid on it and tried scraping it off, but its only taking off the clearcoat and nothing under it, no matter how many times I go over it. So, short of taking it somewhere and have it run through a planer or something, anyone have any better ideas?

Hey, I was just at the music store, and I noticed that the Mexican made "Fender Strat", is virually half if not more than the American made one..Does anyone know if there is a big quality difference between the two?...I fully realize that the price of labour is cheaper in Mexico. I was just wondering if the craftmanship is negligible.
Hey Ray:
I know you wrote this almost 2 years ago but..........
I have a mexican strat, I love the sound of it. My guitar God friend says it's got amazing tone. I have to agree with him. Who knows...... maybe I got lucky. I have yet to play an american strat, so I am kind of partial, but I honestly believe the craftsmanship is great for the Mexican strat. I am just girl though.
